Absurd subscription costs
The subscription cost for academia is getting more and more insane. These are greedy people who only care about gatekeeping knowledge. You can find most of these papers for free online elsewhere. Use google scholar, JSTOR, or Research gate to access these papers.

Broad-based, exciting and thought-provoking. A real mental pleasure. It would be better if the articles were more recent .
cannot exit articles once opened
when i open an article, that’s it. it’s over. i am locked into this article because your back arrow does not work, swiping does nothing, and so i end up having to completely close out the app, which means i have lost my place in my search and i have to start all over.
Price shot up recently
Now way too expensive, and the automatic renewal feature makes you pay $318 annual dues before you even know it’s imminent. Really not an okay practice, to increase the price by over 20% and not alert the subscriber. Academia.edu is only moderately useful and no longer worth the cost.

Dark mode is free feature provided by Apple in the SDK (software developer kit) this has been industry standard in apps now for years. How are we in 2026 and you don’t have this free (copy & paste code)that Apple offers you, embedded within your app?

We get daily notifications that are related to us, but we can never gain access to them - feels like constant bait click
I just see the same thing every time
The same papers stay in the front page for weeks. Because nobody really uses the site.

Log in doesn’t work. Constant “unavailable” errors. Waste of time using the app just sign in through the web browser.
Academia.E use pretty good
I think it is doing pretty well. Just a lot of amazing things. I enjoy the downloaded products as you get a chance to get that. that’s working pretty well. actually I love the documentation and reports in the scholastic. It’s just great. I love it. You learn a lot of things from it. that’s why I gave his 55 star review cause I enjoy every part of it. They’re great awesome. It’s a very good thing cause there’s so much to learn from that.
Hoped for More Current Articles
In the narrow field of Full Opiate Based-Pain Medication Pharmacotherapy (CNCP), that is NOT Addiction Oriented, what I’ve seen over some years now is Very Dated and OUTdated Articles. It is the Single reason I am Not a paying devotee. The one article inspiring This adverse review is 12 Years Old. I fully realize I may be being unfair as these articles will come to represent inaccurate historical data someday. Conversely I appreciate the Sheer Volume of Articles. Peer Reviewed Studies at my Fingertips
I own an organic refillery and year round farmers market. My customers come to me with recommendations for health advice often, and I prefer to get all of my information from peer reviewed studies. Luckily I find it interesting to read the findings across multiple sources. This app makes it so simple to hop on during lulls in my day, and prevents unnecessary social media consumption. Thank you for creating this app!
Extremely Limited App
For me, this app has some severe limitations that make in unusable: - The in-app search engine is terrible to the point of being unusable, you must use the exact name of a paper for it to appear - There is no “find” or “search” feature within the papers making it very frustrating to read them - You can’t select text in a paper, which means no copying, highlighting, etc - You can’t download the papers as pdfs to your device - The buttons at the top menu while reading a paper are so small it’s near impossible to click them - The app is constantly trying to sell you the premium version making it slow to navigate Overall, everything you would want about an app-version of this website is not here. You’re better off using the mobile website in a browser and searching for articles using your browser’s search engine. There is essentially no point in this app. Very disappointed.

The app needs work
I think that it’s probably a useful resource when it works. I’ve found it a bit unintuitive though, as even after you classify yourself as a student, or say that you haven’t published, it still constantly sends spam (notifications, emails, and I think in app it asks repeatedly) asking “are you the —————— in this paper?” “is this your paper?” That’s not the full reason for my low rating though. The app has sign in issues that a few others have already mentioned. For me it keeps signing me out every single time. Not sure why. I think I’m just going to delete it for now and maybe try again later when after some bug fixes are performed.

Glitchy App
The app deserves five stars when functioning properly. As of the last update, a bug continues to force me to refresh every 5 seconds because the app continually kicks me off it. Hopefully, administrators correct this bug before the next update; otherwise, the app remains virtually useless.
“Feed is empty”
I just downloaded this app and chose subjects of interest and still my feed is empty. That is a very stupid design because it turns me giving out my desired topics to a nothing. And I don’t know researches by name. That’s why I need the recommendations. Who ever designed this please fix this.

Misleading subscription cancellation
After I cancelled my subscription, I was still charged an annual payment of £146. Apparently, the cancellation process requires multiple confirmation steps, which is a misleading UX tactic used to manipulate users. The app has refused to issue a refund. A very discouraging experience with a service that has become unreasonably overpriced.
Diploma student perspective
Although some is above my current academic grasp, this resource stretches, challenges, surprises and intrigues me. It points to new territory, consolidates familiar ground and often gives me a feeling of enthusiasm. Some is below my current level of enquiry, I would welcome some sort of filter to speed up my enquiry.
Slow & Unsteady
As monthly membership fees have now quadrupled, one would expect the service to at least keep apace...the app feed is consistently slow and often fails to scroll beyond the first few results. This app has been a welcome addition to a top research portal--please invest some of your new monthly cash flow into its performance.
Beware of sudden price increase for Premium
I have found this app and website extremely helpful for many years for sharing my writings and reading those of others. The price for Premium subscription has been reasonable and worth it for me. Then suddenly this year the price more than doubled with no warning. I do see a box on my account page that was not checked for notifying auto renewal. I would not have known to check that box until I saw it. Was it recently added? Make sure you check it! I was so shocked at the charge on my credit card that I thought it was fraud as did my bank, and I needed to get a cancel my new credit card and get a new one. There is absolutely no refund for not catching this. After this now expensive paid for year I will not be renewing Premium subscription!
Great for research
I found this app very useful for my research.
500% Price Increase!!! Ridiculous!!!
Ridiculously greedy and extortionate!!! The initial $60 subscription has jumped to $300!!! Are you kidding? No, you’re not. But this is blatant and inexcusable, and is just unintelligent bad business, and I’m guessing you’ll be losing most of your subscribers.

Relevance
While it is important to understand journeys (history) I feel there is not enough recent information (papers) to understand what is happening today or relevance to today’s workplace. Very historical information.

Keeping in Touch
Academia helps me to keep in touch with my Academic interests now that I am retired. I'm constantly surprised by the the updates that come in from around the world where my research is reviewed by others seeking to create new knowledge.
Terrible Functionality
App does not work at all! I cannot even log into the app itself. It constantly gives me a notification saying “Network Unavailable. Contact Customer Support” regardless if I am connected to WiFi or 5G connection. Fix this bug in your mobile app!
Very good resource
Gives very useful access to a wide range of academic papers and easy to search. I am not an academic, but regularly receive emails telling me that I have cited cited numerous times. Also lots of pressure to pay a subscription.
Lesser than the WEB version
This app feels like an unprofessional and cheap version of the web format of Academia.edu
Review Concerns
At times the interface is clumsy and not intuitive. It seems almost impossible to read the articles online without purchasing a bundle. I am a retired lecturer who wants to pursue a narrow range of interests, without the intention to write further research theses: as I have already written three on three different areas of study: one per decade.
A saving Grace
Whereas searching all over for information is time consuming and hard to access sites this makes it easy to find the information you need!! Thank you
Unethical and exploitative
This used to be free and loads of academics and university students uploaded their work for free to make it accessible to a global user base. Then they privatised it, and charge an annual fee, no monthly subscription available. Totally abusing and misusing their site according to the values they proclaimed when they began. Utterly disgraceful, morally reprehensible.
What I like most here
The subjects I get, I guess are customised according to my interest lines, that’s delightful. Then the papers are really good, logical and well researched organised- What I think there’s some thing still to be done— Some old pdf files should be unlocked for all— so that where there’s source crunch the studies reach
Some interesting choices
I love finding articles on this app but some features could be improved - it would be great to be able to comment or read reviews on an article before you set off on a journey as some are terribly translated for example so are a hard read. Also the search functionality could work better - you want to see everything on one topic but the app breaks it down into too many component parts
Frustrating
There is no option to pay monthly for a subscription. Students generally don’t have £70 to gamble in one go on a subscription which promises thousands of results but does not give the opportunity to view first!

Academia is part scam/part virus
Stupid to even consider paying for a service that onto hosts your papers and tries to sell them to others. Even when you do pay, the stats aren’t really worth anything. I wish I’d never used it. It’s way too expensive and really it isn’t used that much. I prefer ResearchGate for now but nothings perfect.
Useful but Annoying
Useful but extremely irritating. I use the app for articles but unless you are a Premium member most of what you see are popups and reminders to upgrade.
