Amazing
This is the best language app I’ve used for Finnish! It actually helped me learn. And I love that there is a one time payment option. I hope they add Swedish eventually, but I have recommended this app to multiple people
Out of tries - again …
Certain bugs (or features) are extremely irritating and still in new version. I would list them, but the app doesn’t help much with correcting errors - so why should I? Trying Falou to see if their learning model and implementation is better
Great Tool!
I really like this app, the mix of writing, speaking, and grammar keeps me from getting bored with just one method. I’ve been using it for a little over three months and will continue to use it until I feel comfortable with the language. That being said there are 2 bugs that continue to annoy me. Both are on the Writing section where you listen to the phrase and write it out as you heard it. Half the time when you click the light blueish sound icon to start It will act like it’s playing audio but will be silent, so you have to click it two more times to actually get it to start. then when you heard the phrase and write it out it will show you where you spelt a word wrong or otherwise were incorrect. When you go to correct yourself and spell out the word again it will just remove your typing icon from the box, sometimes for multiple attempts. I know those are minor bugs on an otherwise great app but they’ve been annoying me since the beginning. Love the app, i’m learning a lot! keep up the great work!
Constant freezing or won’t open
This app freezes constantly or won’t open at all, sometimes for several hours or days. The content is decent but is no where near as robust or interactive as Duo Lingo. The only reason I am using it is because the language I need is not yet available on Duo Lingo.
Decent but not great
The app has a lot of great exercises but it can be extremely buggy at times.
Best around
This is probably the best overall language app; certainly the best I’ve used. The content quality is really good and it’s structured very well. The only complaint I can think of is the corporate memphis visuals—an otherwise visually appealing app shouldn’t use the most repulsive art style in human history.
Skip ahead
I don’t use the app anymore because I can’t skip ahead to say beginner two or beginner three I can only start at the beginning of either beginner, intermediate or advanced Beginner has way too little words because it starts at zero intermediate has too many because I am not Anywhere near 900 words yet I know roughly 400 to 500 words speaklu does not give me an option to start where I am
Amazing App but with a few typos
I love this app! It’s excellent at giving you what you need to improve, I love being able to practice grammar and even conversations on this app, which Duolingo doesn’t really have. I feel very confident that I will actually be able to master Spanish through this app (maybe French or Italian, and maybe even Russian or Finnish later). I REALLY wish they could add more languages (I also want to learn Farsi) Though the reason I have it 4 stars is that on the grammar practice section, it sometimes tells you that your correct answer is incorrect (it gives you the answer you put as correct, that’s how I know) and that your accent (I have more of a Latin American accent due to living in California) is incorrect since it seems as if it just has the Castilian Dialect. Though I say that if you’re looking for a language learning app that really helps, this is for you!
Not Paying Without a Proper Preview
Speakly might be a great app. I am interested in leaning Estonian and naturally thought an app by an Estonian company would be the way to go. Unfortunately they have not learned the critical lesson, failed by so many companies: Full-Free Preview. Nobody wants the hassle of setting up a subscription for a product they have yet to see. Yes developers push for the fantasy that people will subscribe anyway, with the notion that canceling is hard and will generate revenue regardless of customer satisfaction. WRONG. I am also one of those not interested in paying high monthly (or annual) fees forever. I am a casual user and don't want to pay when I am not using an app...so it's either LIFETIME or nuts to you. Unfortunately, the financials Speakly Oü do not give me confidence that their lifetime will warrant the investment...generating no profit in 2025 and not even renewing the domain for their blog. I very much want to learn the language of my forefathers. Alas.
Really?!
I like the premise of the app, it’s better than any other apps I’ve tried, but it’s hard to learn the language when all I can do in a day is 5 points before having to get off, like really, it’s impossible to do stuff with that little amount of points.
One of the best
Let me open with a request: please switch to literal translations. It’s the difference between memorizing a phrase and understanding every word within one. I don’t want to memorize phrases, I want to know exactly what I’m saying and why. I don’t want to know a few cute phrases for a once of vacation, I’m trying to learn the language. So please please switch to or at least offer literal translations, you’d be the first app to do so and I believe it would put you at quite an advantage over the rest. Because Speakly is magnificent. I don’t find it “gamified” bc I simply ignore points and tallies and focus on the days tasks which are very well thought out and extremely helpful in how diversified they are. I feel the app is more ‘4 stars bc the translations aren’t literal and they send you down the wrong path when forming a sentence’ but I’m giving it 5 bc 1, the price is the best on the market and 2, I’m a dev myself and making apps and games is really hard and this app seems bullet proof. There’s no 1 stop shop for language learning apps but for me, this plus LingQ and Babbel, Nemo for flash cards, is part of a balanced breakfast. Shout out to YouTuber Daysandwords for making me aware of Speakly, it really a wonderful addition to my language learning toolkit :)
Very limited in language options
Hi so I inquired about you adding new language and if you are learning a language they don't have I hope they add asain languages such as Japanese and others
Great app, needs dark theme
This is one of my favorite language learning apps. It stands out for having a very useful combination of lesson types. Just one thing - it desperately needs a dark theme!! I often do lessons late in the evening, and the bright UI can be so blinding i have to stop using the app. Hurts my eyes and disrupts my sleep. Please, please add a dark mode!
Demoralising!
Great resource for language learning which really focuses on conversational proficiency - which is great because I can feel and hear my improvement in French speaking and understanding from using this app. My only issue is sometimes they will ask you to say an English sentence in French without looking at the French translation written out and I will say it perfectly, or at least if my pronunciation isn’t perfect, my French language is and they will repeatedly tell me I am wrong? They give you three tries and I am saying it perfectly but it tells me I am wrong and out of tries even though I know I am not. It is really frustrating and makes me want to delete the app.
Please add support for non-European languages
I have really enjoyed using Speakly to brush up on my German, but I wish there were support for non-European languages. I would have given Speakly five stars if it supported any of the languages I would consider starting to learn, but that is unfortunately not the case. I am a bit disappointed that Speakly has lately prioritized adding Norwegian, with apparent plans to add Swedish. No offense to speakers of Norwegian or Swedish, but considering that there is already fairly broad coverage of European languages, and that highly popular non-European languages such as Mandarin Chinese and Japanese are still not supported, I would have hoped Speakly would choose to diversify a bit more. Mandarin and Japanese are spoken by hundreds of millions of people worldwide and are in high demand among language learners. Introducing non-European languages would make Speakly more diverse and culturally inclusive. It should not be so hard to find competent teachers, linguists, and voice actors to create quality materials for these languages, especially given the large number of Mandarin and Japanese speakers worldwide. Speakly already supports a non-Latin script with Cyrillic, so it seems it should not be such a huge challenge to add support for non-European scripts as well. I hope Speakly will consider adding non-European languages in the future to make the platform more inclusive and appealing to a wider audience.

Worst language app I’ve tried
Instead of teaching anything the app presents flashcards that ask you to translate a sentence and give four possible answers. Assuming you don’t know the language, which is why you’re using this app, you don’t know the correct answer so you just have to guess. After that it explains the correct answer. This is absolutely not an effective way to learn. Many functions are for paid users only and I wasn’t impressed enough to become a paid user so I’ll never know if or how they work.
Almost perfect
This app is truly amazing, but please get rid of the robotic voices in intermediate and advanced French, it makes it very difficult to understand and correctly pronounce words. I love everything else about this app. I did check out Spanish and German to see if they had the voices (I set my level to advanced) and it didn’t have it, so I hope a French update is coming soon. I’ll definitely come back and give it 5 stars once it changes ❤️
Good App but doesn't quite work correctly
I like the app but find it very frustrating. I say common phrases, and it marks them as incorrect sometimes and not others. I can say the exact same thing, and it will eventually accept it with no changes. They have people describing their life in Spanish at full speed which is helpful, and I like that they have you listen to songs in Spanish. I wish they were linked to Apple instead of just Spotify. Apple allows you to watch the lyrics as you listen, which I find helpful. I'm going to continue to use it along with Duo Lingo. If the speech recognition doesn't get better Im going to stop. I don't need the frustration.
Heavily gamified, Italian not idiomatic
I only used this for a few weeks but quickly tired of the gamification, a stream of points to earn and perks to unlock that struck me as childish. But what really put me off was that the Italian isn’t idiomatic. Though it’s technically correct to say “io” (I) before the verb this is rarely done in practice but Speakly does this in all of the sample sentences. It wasn’t worth wading through the point system to learn what is basically incorrect Italian.

I almost love it, but…
I’ve been using Speakly for several months now, and I like it. It’s ONE of my favorite language learning apps. I typically just stick to building my vocabulary each day since I do mix in other apps, but it offers a lot of different options and I add all the music suggestions to my library. However- there is one thing I cannot stand. The speaking questions where you have to form a sentence. Sometimes it’s fine, and other times it’s SO picky it’s impossible to get past the question. I’ll be stuck on it for days sometimes because it takes the most minuscule detail into account that no one but the app would notice. Sometimes I eventually have to just skip the question which is frustrating. I am learning Spanish, and my boyfriend is a native Spanish speaker and even he agrees it’s ridiculous sometimes. He’s always on me on my pronunciation, so I know it’s not just me or he would 100% tell me. Even he answers the questions for me and it says he’s incorrect. I really wish the app wasn’t so robotic and took different dialectics into account(for example, the app uses the Spanish lisp, whereas my boyfriend is Mexican so he doesn’t use it and neither do I). Again, I really like this app but this one problem is really frustrating to me.
No real iPad support
Would have loved to use this app full time but am glad I found out during the trial that iPad support is poor. Typically, I like to split screen with Safari open on the left side and Notes open on the right. I take notes best this way. The speakly.me site works better for me than the app (it has “enter/return” support to progress instead of having to hit the arrow). Unfortunately, the moment I attempt to resize the window it forces me to a blank page with the Speakly logo and download buttons for the app. Can’t force the website in a smaller window, so I had to cancel.
No full sentence translation in Russian flash cards
For some reason the full sentence translation for learning Russian is blank, so when you turn the flash card you get an empty page. But this doesn’t happen in other language, like German.

Love this App
I’ve been using Speakly for a few months now and it’s great. I like it enough to stick with it, it’s great at challenging my listening and understanding skills. The speech interpretation is excellent- it catches my little grammar mistakes (e instead of a, etc) without being annoying and counting me as wrong incorrectly. Only reason not 5 stars is the AI recording of some of the Italian when it’s read out to you on the learning flash cards. I absolutely hate it and one of the draws for this app was listening to native speakers speak slowly and clearly. Unfortunately this has gotten more and more frequent as I’ve advanced in the app and is awful. Would love to see these replaced by voice recordings of actual people and would easily make this app 5 stars (or even 6)!
Doesn’t teach you the alphabet???
Love the immersion approach but I fail to see any lessons in learning the actual alphabet other than learning whole words. Didn’t work for me.
So so voice recognition
I like the content, but the voice recognition leaves alot to be desired. I've had simple phrases like A sept heures fail because their voice recognistion thinks that I am mispronouncing the word A. And there are only so many ways you can pronounce a one letter word!! It gets annoying and wrecks an otherwise good learning tool.
My favorite app for building vocabulary
I’ve been learning German for a while now. I’m pretty good with grammar stuff, but I always struggled with vocabulary. I’ve tried the old standby of flashcards, both physical and with apps like Anki, but that never worked too well too well me. This app on the other hand has been very helpful in actually retaining words. It introduces words in context, and brings them back up just as they’re about to slip from my mind. If I had one gripe, it’s at the app is iPhone only. No iPad support.
Subscription issues
I signed up for the lifetime plan two years ago but they suddenly forced me off of it a few days ago out of nowhere and demanded that I showed the original payment receipt as proof of payment to reinstate my subscription. First of all, this kind of record keeping burden should be on them, not the consumer. Secondly, the app itself wasn’t bad a few years ago, but the lack of improvement over the years is really beginning to bite and others are rapidly beginning to catch up. From a comprehensive standpoint including the risk of getting kicked off the app out of the blue, I would seriously recommend exploring other options. The app’s statistical approach of teaching words in the order of usage frequency has already been replicated elsewhere and this is no longer a unique selling point.
Maybe a glitch?
This app is really nice to help learning the words and meanings, I recommend getting flash cards to help yourself with out paying for it. MY COMPLAINT: I’ve started 4 days ago and have been on a streak, I’m at 21 words and I’m starting to learn full sentences. I just started it and on my very first sentence I cannot continue once I’ve learned the sentence, there’s a microphone but can’t use it unless I buy premium, can I only use the sentences/ continue to use the app if I buy premium?
Love the app but…
This app is great for learning the only problem I have with it is it keeps freezing, it doesn't load when it should and gives me a blank white page. It happens very often and is very annoying. I would otherwise have given it a 5 star rating. Hopefully this issue can get fixed asap.
Portuguese?
I really want to use this app because the layout looks super nice and it looks very effective, however Portuguese is not an option. I understand development takes time so I will wait patiently! Thank you 😊

Unusable. Embarrassingly slow and horribly engineered.
Do not download this app. I have never written a review before, for anything, but I feel so compelled to do so as a software engineer of 11 years. I know lazy and haphazard engineering when I see it. Every screen transition, question, or even a SETTING MENU TRANSITION (???) has to load for 10-30 seconds or more. It doesn’t even look like you have assets to preload, so I have no idea what shoddy practices are happening on the backend to cause delays between views. Aren’t you supposed to capture and maintain the attention of your users??? Why should anyone wait that long between questions? It lost my interest almost instantly. My guess is they’re making bloated API calls to whatever LLM they’re using and outsourced to vibe coders with no idea how to optimize for performance. The app is unusable, per the title. The sheer lack of optimization is so embarrassing, and it’s very curious that this was ever deemed ready for production. I can’t believe they expect people to pay a premium for something this broken. Shame on you and shame on the people who call themselves developers.
Good but annoying performance
App is good, I like the affordable lifetime plan and I really like LIVE-situations and listening exercises. However, the main page takes about 5 seconds to reload every. single. time. you tap it. If you quickly tap settings then tap back, forced long reload, which gets incredibly irritating. However, if these issues can get ironed out I see the potential for a great app.
Can’t tell if it’s worth it
Saw this app in a PBS Space Time video, so I thought I would give it a quick go. First impression, this app feels scummy and doesn’t give enough to see if it’s worth it. The app is too focused on getting you to pay for “premium” features, even if it’s a 7 day free trial. As a result I can’t actually tell if the app is good or not, as it’s basically behind a paywall. So far the app has required meto make a login and the app has thrown a bunch of words at me. Then as soon as I have show I picked 5 words correctly, the app locks down and requires me to sign up for Premium. Would have been better to skip the account creation, and brought up as thing to share and save progress. There isn’t enough free stuff to warrant me trying the 7 fay free trial. I already pay for Duolingo.

3 weeks review/ 3 month review / Update: 600 day review (1.64 years!) I’ve been using Speakly for 3 months to give a proper review, but honestly I fell in love with it from the first day. I took French in highschool for 3 years, yet couldn’t comprehend it when spoken to nor speak it beyond saying my name, which is incredibly frustrating. I could write some of it and knew some vocabulary, but that wasn’t my goal! My dream was able to have conversations and be able to actually understand it by native speakers. After high school, I didn’t continue to learn French as I was so discouraged since I didn’t understand the grammar rules, couldn’t comprehend it, nor speak it and the little nuances that were holding me back. Then came Speakly. Speakly gives you a placement test and then places you in the appropriate level, unlike other learning apps that force you to start from the very beginning (despite if you’ve already know beginner level) which is unmotivating. I love how this app is built, from the soothing colors, simplicity, icons that are motivating when you finish a level, sounds, and most importantly, the content! They have a short grammar section that helped me tremendously understand how French words join together (and why) and wasn’t overwhelming and complicated, they have an awesome vocab section that you learn by hearing natural sentences in and see the spelling, a customized playlist so you can hear songs in the language, a speak back section, a roleplay section, and my favorite the listening exercises. Although I was beyond beginner level one, I had to go back to it for the listening exercises. I love how they talk about topics that are common, ask questions in the listening exercises (not just a one sided dialogue), have a native speaker, and the ability to slow it down and have the option to see it translated. I love learning new words that way or figuring out what words they can be saying by the context (and they have the translations and tell you how to say the opposite as well). The point is, there’s always something fun to do on Speakly given the array of options. I like how it tracks your streaks and points, you get to set a daily goal, reviews words/sentences you’d definitely use, and motivates and excites me each day. After just three days? I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO UNDERSTAND SOME SPOKEN FRENCH!! Which is my dream! And was able to put together sentences that are more complex than “I am eating an apple” like on Duolingo. I used Duo-lingo for learning new vocab or words I had forgotten, and Speakly as my main language learning app. But honestly, I’m so happy I found this app randomly as its the best language app I’ve ever used. I’m blown away at how with such little time, suddenly I’m able to do what I’ve wanted in 3 years.. in 3 days?! It’s like I can finally put the years of French I’ve had into use, or somehow it activated the part of my brain that now can hear and understand what a French person is saying? I’ve tried videos with subtitles in the past, games, etc and yet couldn’t comprehend it till now! That speaks volumes to me. This app really works and it incorporates spaced repetition so you can really cement the knowledge which I really appreciate. It’s also made by polyglots itself, so they really get the content! While writing is great, nothing is like comprehending that actual spoken language, and talking back! After 5 days of Speakly (keep in mind I’m beginner Level 2) I was able to find a native French speaker to talk to, understand her too! Which, had always felt out of reach before and like a fantasy that was impossible. I’m greatful for my subscription, and I hope to see continued updates ❤️ . UPDATE: It’s been a year and eight months since I started using Speakly, and I can confidently say that I still love this app and use it everyday! (For 10-20 minutes). There are times just like any language learning or any topic you learn where there is a “dip” in interest, but rest assured the interest comes back! Sometimes I wish there was a vacation mode. As soemtimes that’s all that’s needed to regain interest. Streaks are fun but can get exhausting, I know they’re suppose to help consistency but I honestly don’t like them very much when they’re back to back. Sometimes I wish there was a streak system that counts 4-5 days in the week on any given day, instead of every day. I’m now in intermediate level on the last tier and just a couple more words in, and I’ll be in advanced level.. Which blows my mind! I have dropped Duolingo as Speakly is more efficient and better to me and additionally I now use AI to test and refine my French conversation skills too. Lastly, shoutout to the team and developers, as they are quick to reply, help, and even put into motion suggestions! I had suggested along with others, that there was a feature to add “favorite” phrases and they created that! My only suggestion at this time is it would be nice like on Duolingo in the sentence practices, you can select each word so you can hear them one by one. Sometimes that’s really helpful as one word may be hard to get/hear as it’s quick in a sentence. Having an option to slow each sentence down would be great too! (In the learning vocab section). All in all? 11/10 for Speakly! Thank you guys for such an amazing app! If you haven’t downloaded this gem of a language app, you’re missing out BIG time! Both on material, time, and price. I’ve tried too many apps on the App Store for language but this is THE one!!
Serious Longterm Bug
I used to love this app until about half a year ago. Then suddenly after an update it stopped allowing me to use multiple choice despite it still being enabled in settings, and write cards are set as disabled. Now it always forces me to write and I have made no progress since. I have deleted and reinstalled the app and reported to customer support several months ago. This is another attempt to have this fixed because I would like to be able to use the app again if bugs could be fixed.

Awesome language learning app but
I’ve been using this app recently and whenever I’m in a lesson, it crashes unexpectedly most of the time. But overall it’s a great app tbh
Poor Functionality
This is a better app in theory for learning a language than most, but it is also is extremely buggy. Correct answers are frequently not counted, meaning you end up spending considerably more time than is necessary completing your daily goal, and the delay between exercises is just that bit too slow. It is also annoying that there is no way to skip speaking or listening exercises when you are in situations where you can’t complete these exercises. Most annoying of all, though, the app stopped opening completely after four days of use, and despite repeated reinstalls and looking online for support, there is seemingly no way to open it. If you do give this app a google you will find that it is notoriously buggy, so I would recommend (despite its good points) avoiding the Speakly app.
Long long times makes this a pain to use
Seems like this could be a really good app, but long 10-20 second load times for content and pages to load in make this pretty much impossible to use effectively. I will give it another chance if those issues are ironed out.
