I can dig it.
I like how there are so many instruments that I can choose from. And you don’t have to pay for a lot of them. I do however think there should be some acoustic drums for free. I’m a drummer and I like the acoustic sound that a traditional kit produces. I also there should be a variety of pianos to choose from as a starter pack. I like piano as it was the first instrument I learned. But over all I like Groovebox as it is. Five stars.

Please, I’m begging the developers of this app to give this app a custom time signature feature. I love that it has swing opportunities but come on, even GarageBand has time signature features with 3/4 and 6/8. But I think this app can be even better than GarageBand if it had a custom time signature feature so I can do something like 11/8 if I wanted to. Or even the opportunity to alternate beteeen 11/16 and 13/16 bar after bar. (Or 13/4, 7/4) I love the idea of complete custom odd time signatures and I think this app would be 5 star A+ if it had this option especially considering it already works with ableton. I’d definitely invest more money on this app that’s for sure!
Sad. So much potential. Years later, no improvement.
It’s like they almost finished each thing but just didn’t quite make it to the end. No way to get your midi tracks out of here. Bundle out is not to anything on the iPad. Row transitions are not synced so you can’t prestage any changes. No way to export a song. Not sure why such critical things are missing after all this time.
Falling into a state of disrepair but still good
I have been a user of Groovebox for a long time now. The apps has inspired so many amazing projects that I have created. However, there are some serious bugs affecting the general enjoyment of the app. First off, The synthesizer windows bug out, showing black if you scroll to much in any direction. 2 things fix this and it is restarting the app or tilt your phone so your phone or IPad screen will project it right. Another issue is audio cut out. When multiple voices or melodies are played within a single channel, it will mute melodies based on start. This also happens to the drums. When you played the tracks, if the kick is at the very beginning of the grid or track, the first kick never sounds but it sounds normally after that. Another issue is bugs with volume automation. Within the editing grid, there tends to be a bug where when you try to change the volume automation, the notes don’t change color value, like going dark or lighter and the notes don’t lower and raise in volume. A fix is to restart the app or even delete and recreate a track. All of these issues are serious issues to me as a serious music developer and it ruins the quality of your music and makes it annoying to listen to or deal with. I will be filling a bug report status to Focusright in regard to this. If you don’t experience this, disregard my statement, however, if you do, report the bugs to the developers or look for another app. Thanks
So underrated
So been using this for quite a while and can confirm that it is pretty amazing to have this level of sound quality on my phone . The Novation synths are great. I use the random preset feature for inspiration and then erase and write my own parts but occasionally they be just right. I wish there was a song mode or longer patterns. And a way change the track sequence length on the same screen. Needs more synths and a sampler but I’ve come up with stuff on this little app that blows my mind !
Was one of my favorite apps
This was a good app , one of my favorites. Started last year maybe even longer than that. When playing .. one section of the synth or drum control would disappear and wouldn’t reappear. You just have a black empty slot. So you couldn’t make any adjustments if needed. Emailed the company and they said they were aware of it and were working on fixing it. Year goes by and it still isn’t fixed. So I emailed them a few days ago and they said they don’t know how to fix it and was sorry for the inconvenience…..Wasted money on all the sound packs I bought. I’ve bought a lot of equipment, midi keyboards,apps and sound packs from this company. They didn’t offer any kind of refund for an app that I can no longer use. I won’t use or by anything else from them or any affiliates tied to them.
Needs AUV3 to be relevant in modern day.

Potentially a good app
This could be a great app if there were more bass options. I’d like to see a collection of acoustic bass presets or packs. The current selection of synth basses are not very good.
Is this app still being worked on?
This app hasn’t seen a meaningful update since 2020, when automation and the Horizon synth were introduced. Not even a new sound pack since around 2022. What happened to this app, Focusrite? You had a good thing going on, and you could’ve made it integrate nicely with your hardware.

buy ableton note.its much better
lost patience with this and have now deleted as the devs just use it as a cash cow to sell packs and wouldn’t add any of the suggestions ppl made to make it a better app.ableton note give you far more without constantly trying to get you to buy another pack that gets slipped in by way of bug fixes.
Surprisingly good, simple yet powerful
This app needs a bug fix update badly. Various sections of the synth controls disappear when scrolling between them with no way to get them back. Please fix this as it’s great hurting the functionality of the synths.

J’aimerais partager l’app avec mon fils, mais non il faut tout repayer honnêtement c’est une honte surtout vu le nombre de pack de son que j’ai déjà acheté sans parler du mode pro. Old review gone without fixing anything
So you want to charge me another $10 for a new instrument? Because you forgot to put it in in the first place? $20 for crappy cartoonish instruments? None of the bugs were fixed from last year, so it’s pretty much a scam, they don’t know what they are doing with the app or the business. Open your competition apps for once and get to a normal quality before asking for handouts. I’m not graciously reiterating the bugs here. Thanks for deleting the review, never paying you guys again

Slaves to Ableton
Dear Novation/Ampify marketing team, it is becoming blatantly obvious that you are selling off your customers to Ableton live. Why else would you keep your « Groovebox » so crippled? What do I mean by crippled? No panning of the instruments, no EQ by track, no way to record arrangements. These features are so essential to a Groovebox that they basically define it. Why don’t you dare to grant your alleged « Groovebox » with these simple features? Not because they are hard to implement but because you are slaves to Ableton and have the intent of making your customers slaves to this software too. I would give 5 stars if this wasn’t the case and you were really committed to make this app a professional app. But you aren’t so the the first star is for the excellent sound quality and the second is for the excellent ergonomics. The three lacking stars are for betraying your customers.
There is no chromatic scale
I like this app but it’s a shame that there isn’t a chromatic scale so can you explain why there isn’t a chromatic scale and fix it NOW IMMEDIATELY!

Refreshing Simplicity
Typically, I hate apps like this. Obviously this is the exception to the rule. The simplicity with which you work in, Groovebox makes it fun even when you’re experimenting. I’m not a fan of apps that are constantly trying to sell you new features new sounds. I much prefer a set price along with IP’s. It’s not unreasonable to expect money to transact if new features are brought on or there is a substantial change in quality based on various libraries and features . On the other hand, it does bug me a little bit. However, most of the improvements in libraries are reasonably priced and they give you some kind of idea on the libraries what it is you’ll be buying which is such a difference from almost everything else that you purchased through the iPad store . Sun quality is excellent, the ability to create complex structures is so simple it almost seems like you’re cheating. It’s fun too recommended
Still pretty basic
Automation is likely to never show up. Also the ipad UI is crippled by iphone support. On larger iPads you need to needlessly scroll across very few synth parameters on what should be easily accessible on just one screen. Its been a year since my last review and the only thing in that whole time that was added was preset saving. The most basic feature imaginable in any other app that has been begged for by the users since day one and it took this long.
Beautiful sounds but app a bit buggy
I’m really enjoying this app but with my iPad laying horizontal, while scrollling through the synth menus, the envelope page and color are always disappearing. I have to load it again for them to reappear and be careful not to scroll the menu too much otherwise they’re disappearing. Other than that, I totally love the sounds coming out from this app. Hope they fix that with the next update.
My favorite music app
I think this app is underrated. Sure, it's not a full DAW, and if it could integrate with launchpad and blocswave that would be awesome. However for being free unless you choose to purchase packs and upgrades, I think it's an amazing app. I've been using it for years and I'm not a music professional by any means but this app has greatly helped me improve creatively. I love it so much and I hope it stays around forever. I think if they ever stopped supporting this app I would genuinely cry. 100/10.
I can’t control the pad
It swipes how to fix or do
Almost perfect, but one frustrating issue.
I love practically everything about this app, but I have one issue with it. I wish there was an (on/off) option for patterns to switch when the currently playing sequence ends instead of when switching exactly when you press the next pattern button. It sounds too abrupt and the timing is difficult to make the transition sound seamless. In other words, I want it to work like the sequence snap feature in Koala Sampler. Groovebox would be my main music app if they added this feature. I’ve deleted the app because of this issue and will happily download again when they include this feature.

Needs an update in 2024
Still cannot export clips created in Groovebox directly to Launchpad… why? Sequencer needs some updated features (probability, euclidean, etc). Add a more full featured mixer? Add a sampler or granular device? I still love the workflow, just wish there was more substance than just selling me sound packs.
Long time user
I’m a musician who chose the reggae tip probably forty years ago. Today I use Groovebox to create the best reggae music I’ve ever heard. Being that I’m not the smartest person . I have about three hundred songs that I can’t figure out how to sequence or dump. Every time someone or something happens to my phone it’s all gone. So I have lost about four hundred next level music tracks over the years. Now I have two iPhones and both are quickly getting filled up with Groovebox data. So Groovebox is my therapy but I’m too stupid to know what to do or how to develop the material I have . There’s a lesson here…….
Can’t get anything open
I downloaded this app and have yet to get it to do anything but buy things in the app. I can’t make a beat or instrument appear on the screen. I can’t play them. I can’t even see them. It’s just a black screen with a ‘plus’ button to open new projects but when opened the screen remains black and nothing happens.
With a few more features this app could be gold
Using this one for a few years and really enjoy it But Desperately needs flexibility with piano roll and playing. The sound sets are often updated but it feels like they’re just pushing these out instead of crucial updates to the actual workflow, just basic things other apps have. Which takes away from the experience. - pre count before recording - having to set bars before recording is frustrating instead of more fluidity with automatic loop bracing once you’ve laid down an idea - clunky piano roll, you can’t set the scale lock in the piano roll but can in the project, it doesn’t add up. Would honestly pay for these updates

Pro Pack not included access to all instruments
If you buy Pro Pack do not expect to have access to all instruments . Horizon doesn’t have a minimal pack included where you can have access to all knobs to make your own presets. You realise after you pay that you need pay again for basic control and i think this is a disingenuous practice.
Successful beat synchronization
Gave me a huge opportunity to put beats together to create my own music. Very easy to use gives you thousands of different options to piece your music together.

Easy to use but you’re stuck in 4
Easy to use and lots of flexibility as long as you dont mind that you’ll never be able to use an odd time signature. You are forced to always have four beats per bar and the number of bars in a loop has to be a power of two for some reason (2, 4, 8 etc). Why no 12 bar parts? However I do very much appreciate that you can divide a beat into triplets though, that’s VERY nice; that has the benefit that you can then swing the beat in a triplet with the swing slider, so you can make a track in 6/8 sound natural. Not many drum machines make that so easy. Please just give us the ability to change the beats per bar!! Currently, time signatures like 9/8 or 5/4 or 7/8 etc are all impossible. There’s a whole universe of music that isn’t in 4/4!
Awesome idea need help
This really is an awesome app, but you'll see that it's missing three major things to make it truly an app that stands out from all other apps and actually allows you to produce a full song. This app in its current form will only enable you to make up parts. So what's it missing? 1 - Import your own samples - unfortunately the samples as with most of their other apps all sound very similar and tend to be a bit drab. There are no uplifting or mainstream types of samples. 2 - beat loop 1/4 1/2... etc or 32 64 bar sample length so that you can program in those drop in drum rolls 3 - Midi so that you can play live with any of novations keyboards and pads

Unacceptable battery usage
Used the app once to play around, then noticed the next day my battery was draining way faster than normal. Checked the usage and this app was the culprit. Can't see any reason it should be responsible for 73% of my battery usage while it's sitting unused in the background. Deleted it immediately.

What musical merit do you get from an app that sells you basic synths and silly riffs at a high price point? Sure the synths sound ok, but its not worth the price charged. The facilities on offer are sub par to many other apps out there and the creative drive is lost on this loopy nonesense, its like a high priced toy for children. I dont know why I let novation sucker me into these doodoo prodcuts time and time again. At this point I feel like im done with their childish app development. Its like "automap" all over again🙄 Hey novation, stick to making hardware!
