Great Session Tracking
Use it to track my sessions. Trying to progress my surfing and this helps. I think. It's cool to review your waves and your misses.
Needs a lot of work before they ask for this kind of money.
I had my fingers crossed I tried using the free version and nothing worked, so I got the subscription and I can barely get this app to work with the paid subscription on. I’ve had it work how it should once. Other times it stops before I start surfing, or it closes after one wave, or it records the first wave and then it freezes. Some of my sessions don’t upload to the app. I have to make sure I start the app on my phone, along side starting it on my watch to have any chance of it recording anything. The app needs a lot of work before they are asking this kind of money to use it. I really want this app to work, and will keep an eye on it and hopefully one day they will improve it.
Love this app
It occasionally misses a wave that I clearly caught but otherwise does a stellar job. I do wish it had an export feature. As a lifelogger I can use that data—I like to tally stats that this app does not aggregate for me, requiring me to do those manually. The subscription is set at a reasonable level making it a good value.
App Stability Still Wonky
Still regularly crashes especially when naming new spots or adding things like ratings for the session, type of board used etc. There are also typos in the app like the word Threshold is spelled “tresold” in the HR section. Hopefully the Surfline acquisition will help stability and Accuracy.
Inaccurate
The tides are off, it does not record all the waves, it loses reception making it difficult to turn off and water temperature is way off.
Great for Progress
I’ve been tracking rides for several years and it’s been easy to track progress and use the videos from Surfline to improve. Improving ride lengths and speeds alone is useful when trying different boards or tracking progress at frequented spots.
Won’t Reliably Sync With Garmin
The Dawn Patrol app seems to have significant issues syncing with Garmin. My Garmin Forerunner 970 successfully records the activity, and Garmin Connect receives it, but Dawn Patrol often takes a long time to import the session or fails to sync it at all. Unfortunately, the Forerunner 970 does not have Garmin’s native Surf activity, so I purchased a full year Dawn Patrol subscription specifically to record my surf sessions. Based on my experience, I would recommend getting a Garmin watch with the native Surf activity rather than relying on Dawn Patrol for Garmin integration. I paid for the full year subscription but have been disappointed with the reliability of the app. I’m now considering buying a Garmin Epix so I can record my surf sessions natively and no longer need to rely on Dawn Patrol.
Free is great
The free version is great. I haven’t purchased the upgrade yet.
Sync is a mess
Constantly loses the board / session settings. After each session it blows away the last weeks worth of changes. Still can’t get such a basic thing right after all these years.
Could be great
But unfortunately with Apple Watch only around 2 of 3 sessions actually register. The others just vanish. You go to look at your session later in the day and it just isn’t there. Still worth the price.
Fun app
I like it! Question for the dev, any ways to merge two sessions or more into one? Sometimes I need to check something so I remove the Water Lock, but because it’s all wet it happens many times where it either pauses or stops the session. Pause is okay but when it stops, I have to restart a new session… but I want it to be the same session, not 2 différents sessions. Thanks! 06/09/26 new request for devs: an incredible update would be to be able to switch between sessions when reading the insights. right now, once you’re inside a session, you cannot easily switch to the previous day (maybe an arrow or simply allow with finger swipe, could be great!)
Doesn’t work
Scam app isn’t accurate. Surfline charges over $100 and doesn’t include this? Wtf. I’m not paying another $15 on top of that.
Doesn’t populate sessions automatically to Surfline
Difficulties having it connect to Surfline. Have to log out and log in a few times to connect videos to sessions
Loses data
Lost a couple of my sessions. When you try and press fields to access data it glitches and goes back to like you never pressed anything.So irritating. Fix and update.
No bad but very easy to make great
They don’t let u see anything else when ur surfing , including the tide, so u basically have to memorize and guess what it is when ur out IF u checked b4 jumping in. I see the developers response to this same issue from years ago. and they say “please update app” and, it’s a lie bcuz they didn’t change it at all cuz I jus got the app. Also some sessions don’t load so u just wasted ur whole day. I’d have no problem paying for premium if the app was better

Way Off
This app says I caught 10 times more waves than I did and that I served hours longer than I did.
No support and app doesn’t work anymore!
I’ve tried and tried to get support and no answer. It was a great app a few months ago but now it doesn’t work and I still have half my subscription remaining. You guys need to sort it out or give us our money back!

I've had mile plus long rides and app chops the ride up, inaccurate
Love the idea…
…but location tracking is way off. I am not surfing the parking lot, or the highway. Likewise, even with wave size settings, certain rides aren’t captured. Apple Watch Ultra.
SUP tracking data geek
Yes, I’m a self-aware data geek and avid SUP surfer. Knowing how many waves, speed graph of each, time on waves, length paddled, calories burned. Just wish they had a separate SUP surf specific tracker. Got that Customer Service!

I have missing sessions and even though I pay $28 yearly my “premium” status isn’t unlocked for some reason.
Serious calibration problems
I surf daily at the same break and started using this app in its previous version. I was excited to have done objective data to improve my surfing and invested in a new Apple Watch solely to use this app. Since the app has been updated, though, I experience such a shocking number of anomalies that the app is verging on becoming useless. Examples: a wave that says I went 12.1 mph and rode it for 4 seconds but traveled zero feet: two waves counted and I haven’t even finished paddling out (yes, I have the sensitivity turned up, ie “fast waves”); recorded speeds approaching 40 mph which just isn’t possible for this surfer; major rides of over 100m in length going undetected. It’s all over the place. The old app was way better and gave consistent results.
Used to be better
This app used to track waves well, and only occasionally did it track nonexistent rides. Nowadays it tracks way too many nonexistent waves, regardless of which wave speed setting I have it on. It also drains the whole battery quicker than my single session (new watch with proper battery health). I have stopped using it most days. Too bad bc I used to really enjoy all the stats.
Hoping for Better
I have used Dawn Patrol for the past four years. I primarily wing foil, distance stand-up paddle and stand-up paddle surf. The iWatch hardware elements of DP are terrible. Much of the issue is Apple. But DP app control when in real world surf conditions are almost impossible to use. Approximately 25% of the time when I push Start, the session does not actually start and I lose the entire session altogether. Next, ‘wave count’ is always wrong. For wing foil, every single jibe/tack/turn is considered a wipeout and next wave begins.
Request
Love the app, if possible please add ability to see text messages received during the session and water temperature. I don’t want to check my text, but I would like to know if I receive a new one in case of emergency without having to unlock the water lock. Thank you.
App not working
Have used for 5 years today my iPhone 14 not loading app have rebooted 3 times, phone and watch , please advise !!!
Foilers friend
Dawn Patrol helped me measure and improve foiling by tracking what I was using when. The ability to share and contrast sessions with friends has made the entire process more fun. The integration with the Surfline.com cams even catches a glimpse of the process

Complications keep stopping to load
A key part of the subscription value are the complications, but they keep stopping to load. I uninstalled app and watch app and they came back. Happened again and I uninstalled just watch app and they came back. Today AGAIN. Watch app reinstall did nothing. I’m not going to reinstall everything every time the app glitches. The Tides app pretty much has the same info now. Won’t be renewing the subscription at this point. The tracking is funky anyways. It’s set to fast waves and still captures when I paddle back out as waves too often.

Never Works
I wanted to love this app and at first became addicted to the statistics. It was genuinely motivating me to improve. After a few surf sessions it just stopped tracking. I got 20 waves at the same break it recorded the day before but the app tracked 3. I’ve uninstalled updated etc
Missing Strava
Overall the app is great. It’s well designed and works without issue. The only reason I didn’t give it a 5 is the lack of Strava integration and the price. The subscription is steep (like double what I expected) for what you get!
Great when it works
I really enjoy what the app is capable of. Unfortunately, when it doesn’t work, it takes away from my session. There’s some bugs where it will miss complete sessions. Hopefully, they fix them.
Buggy
I loved this app at first, but lately it has been hit or miss. Forecast no longer works on Apple Watch. Strava sync not available anymore. Sessions not showing up on phone. What’s going on??

Wave counts way off!
Lately the watch is tracking something other than my actual wave counts. It will say 35 waves when I only caught 10. Apps are updated. Any suggestions? It hasn’t always been like this. Just since January.
Why does it show Byron Bay on the app
Question for admin. I installed it yesterday a d listed Mullaway and Stanwell Park as 2 beaches but on the watch it shows Byron Bay?
Inaccurate readings, virtually useless data
Pros: The user interface is easy to follow and really aesthetically pleasing! I like that I can enter in the spots I surf at and the boards I use that session. Cons: I’ve used this app for several weeks to track my sessions and I use an Apple Watch. It’s highly inaccurate with most of the data it can track (location, speed, time on wave, etc.) it’ll map that I rode waves onto the beach, past the parking lot, and past highways for example. Also, today on a day with 1-3 ft waves that were not very powerful, it recorded me riding a wave for over 1 minute at 20 mph.. I wish I had that ability but my skills are also nowhere near that level yet. Also, my sessions do not sync to the app on my phone immediately and I typically will have to go into the app on my watch to sync sessions individually. It’s a nice concept but this app has a lot of bugs and inaccurate readings. I’ve been wanting to use it to track my progress but have not been able to because of the inaccuracy of data.
GPS Accurency..
GPS accuracy, sync problem with Strava. The application is really well made and intuitive. But I very regularly have sessions where the GPS point is 400m off from me, which gives false average speeds at the end of the session (319km/h ...) The connection to Strava may be established, but the synchronization of sessions is impossible. Even after several updates. For those reasons, I know use an other app to surf track.
Almost perfect
This app is amazing. I switched from a Garmin just for this app and use it for foiling and traditional surfing and it works perfectly. The only thing that would make it better is if it would send the heart rate information to Strava seems like that would be pretty easy to do.
Doesn’t work
This just isn’t remotely accurate. Will say I caught 30 waves in a session when I caught ten. It’s supposed to track the course of your waves so you can view them, but it will show me coming in and then heading back out to the lineup as if it were a wave. I thought the problem might be the GPS on my Apple Watch instead of the app, but I got another watch and it had the same problems
Good, but too expensive
I like the app, I will say. Can be buggy, not all complications work, but Overall nice app. I will also say, a subscription based model for this product is a straight up grift. This is pure greed. You get no personalised content, no feedback. Needs to change to a one time payment or I will drop it
I like this app but…..
The app has become unusable for me.. the feed on the Home Screen just freezes up and I can’t scroll at all… the watch app starts frequently and I have a lot of junk sessions but there’s no option to delete session so it has to save it which then syncs to Strava and fills my Strava with junk… anyways I like the app but needs a lot of work
Nice app not totally accurate and would like to see a few more features
The app isn’t totally accurate, every time you paddle for a wave it counts it as a wave ridden, even getting pounded when you get caught inside can count as a “wave”. The time and distance of the ride recorded are a little suspect too. I’d like to see a feature that tracks wipeouts, and hold-downs as well.

Watch doesn’t show any complications
I’m able to install the app on my iPhone, pay the money for the subscription, press the button to add the watch face on my iPhone, see the corresponding watch face added on my watch app, and have zero information or additional data available for that watch face. There is nothing to select specific to this app and gives me a blank watch face only.

Wave tracking is not accurate
Like other reviewers, the app is unreliable for wave tracking. I have tried both slow and medium settings with poor results. It misses waves and it appears confused between paddling, surfing and even walking on the beach. I also have yet to see the display show that I caught a wave right after catching a wave. Another reviewer stated that there are problems when used with Apple Ultra watches. I have an Apple Ultra 2 so maybe that’s the issue. Seeing that the Ultra watches are designed to be used in the ocean I expected it to work. I sincerely hope the app is improved.
Latest update is BUGGY
Whats up with the QA? Speed especially is weird… dont think Im down the line at 44mph. Also wave count increments before I even catch first wave. Also would be amazing to be able to download all my session data to run my own stats. Thanks for listening.
