For those of you who are considering the little hippo mela get this
This review is for those of you who are actually considering it this or the little hippo mala toddler sleep trainer I’m a grown-up, but I have Mela and to be completely honest for $50. It’s not that great but as for the hatch this was my first night using it with the nighttime routine, especially because I actually have to get up early. I have the rest second generation And I also have the first generation as well, but I used a nighttime routine last night and honestly, it was the best decision I ever made one thing I would like you guys to consider though is maybe adding more sleep sounds to the available ones maybe some of the newer options and Please add some more music and stuff to the subscription content. I feel like it’s totally worth the investment to get the hatch and I advise that you get it instead of the little hippo Mela.
Great device, really bad app
The app adds a lot of unneeded friction for the most basic stuff like creating an alarm
Volume issues
My volume is set on my routines yet each time it resets to a louder volume. It didn’t used to be a problem, help!
Great Basic Noise Machine… not-so-great Subscription
The basic white noise & other sounds (brown noise, rain, dryer, etc.) are great and we love them! The subscription for Hatch+ leaves something to be desired. Our connection waivers constantly despite our high internet speed, so we’ll be halfway into an audio only for it to stop abruptly, which makes bedtime harder (but isn’t Hatch supposed to help with that?). Will likely cancel our subscription and just use the basic sounds for sleep.
A little disappointed
The app is ok, but I’m surprised at the fact that you can’t play an external audio (like from your phone via Bluetooth). Most of the cooler bedtime sound options are very new-agey (sound baths, mysticism, etc.) which makes that feature mostly useless for me. I really would like to listen to the Bible as a wind down or sleep sound, but they don’t have it and there’s no way to add it. So, the ability to play external audio, or just adding the Holy Bible would be a HUGE improvement!
Love my hatch!
Hatch has helped my sleep so much and is a great way to wake up, just wish there were more nature sounds !
Keep malfunctioning
Keeps turning on at random times

Hatch switched to a subscription plan and essentially bricked our device. Can’t play anything via the app or the touch ring. Now we just have a basic clock.
Sleep noise
I’ve had it for over a year now and I don’t think they’ve added any new sleep sounds. The options are very limited. Save yourself $ and buy a good Bluetooth speaker and download one of the many better apps.
Update broke
Recent update broke my hatch. now the volume goes to max in its own. i turn the volume to zero and it goes right back to max. tried to reset same issue.

Not good
It’s very slow, it closes out of the app once it times out. Which is very fast. And when you go to reopen it it takes too long. Like I’m trying to open it and then the light on asap. And touching the ring would switch to another sound I don’t want. So touching ring isn’t an answer. It also doesn’t always play and glitches. I wish the app would stay open so when I went to quickly change something I can.
Needs updated sounds
I love my Hatch alarm and the app, but I think the sound library could use an update. I know a few new sounds get added from time to time, but many of them feel very similar. I mainly use my Hatch as a morning alarm, and a lot of the sounds in the alarm section seem more suited for meditation or falling asleep rather than actually waking someone up. Some louder, more energizing, and varied alarm options would make a big difference. Overall, I love the product and would just love to see more wake-up-friendly sounds added in future updates.
Infuriatingly Slow
The physical product itself is fine. It’s as good as any sound/light machine. But the app is so slow to load that after initial setup it’s essentially useless. It takes literal minutes to connect, which is super fun when you’re trying to put your kids to bed, or raise the volume or adjust the light.
Alarm is great
Love the alarm! Super sounds / features etc. I want to upgrade but refuse until I can consistently change my alarm on the first try on the app. Just took 4 tries! Unacceptable.

Lagging constantly
Incredibly laggy/fails to connect often. I can never predict when the app will suddenly stop working. Sometimes I wake up and cannot even control my alarm because the app will not connect. When it works it is nice, but I suspect someone could set up something similar with a smart bulb and alarm clock without the constant connectivity and lagging issues.

Great device and app
Very simple and useful device and app. The only thing I would like to add, it will be great if the sound and light bar will have numbers.
3 years later, still outraged at the failures and failures
Picture this - your kid has a fever, and you wake up at 4 am remembering the alarm is going to turn on at 6 am. You want them to sleep in. You think “great, I have an app for exactly this reason!” and open Hatch to turn off that alarm. NOPE, NO WIFI CONNECTION. Has it been sitting in the same spot for months? Has your WiFi been the EXACT SAME for years? WHY WHY WHY would it be disconnected, and why under the big blue sky would it require PHYSICAL RESET TO RECONNECT?????????? Again, WHY???? So I have to crawl silently through their room, TURN OFF THE DEVICE, wait for a super slow reboot, during which it is silent and the kid starts to wake up. It finally turns back on but wait! It’s reverted to old, deleted presets! So the color/sound combo your kid relys on can’t be found with the physical tap, instead it’s loud, random sounds. SO FUN FOR EVERYONE! and the app STILL does not control the device, so I still can’t change the alarm, but there’s no error message so also no clear reason to fix, at 4 am, holding your breath. So now instead of my sick kid waking at 6, they’re up at 4. So fun! And a scenario that never ever should’ve been built in, approved, or supported by a device with this purpose. GARBAGE. Why have these issues not been fixed, patched, whatever? Shame shame shame continues.
Better than a phone
The device is great. Solid sounds and great lighting. The fading between routines is AWFUL. One second the sound is slowly fading out, then the next part of your routine kicks in and BAM! It’s back to the preset volume. Is it too much to ask to fade in and out of each part of the routine?!? Other than this, rather large missing feature, it’s been a good experience with the app and device.
App is buggy at the moment
The clock is good, but I cannot set up a new time because I’m constantly getting a bug in which the app thinks I already set the timer. If this were fixed I would enjoy it.
app is the worst
i honestly love the alarm, the app however i hate. if i want to turn off an alarm it will pop up again and i have to turn it off AGAIN! there are times when the app refuses to work properly and i have to leave it and refresh for it to just end up doing what i wanted it to in the first place. please fix the app
Great app, one request!
The app is feature rich, reliable and well laid out. On the iPhone I could t ask for more… but I have one request: Please make a watch app! So often I don’t have my phone near me or just need to make a quick change to the sound while holding my baby and this would be a lot easier on the watch. With this feature, Hatch Sleep would be complete :)
HORRIBLE APP
For $170 alarm clock this app feels like something free the Department of public safety would put out. It is not user-friendly. It’s difficult to edit the alarms. You have to go to multiple different places to do different things. I have a bachelors degree and I struggled setting our clocks up. Terrible app.
Love it, but…
Loving it and have been for two years now. I wish they would expand the Worlds Beyond wind down. It puts me right to sleep! Also, hate that editing my routine stops it if it’s already on.
Needs some improvement
I like the Hatch 3, the light function, sound quality and design are nice — but the app is lacking. Music tends to repeat phrases way too quickly. It feels like bars instead of songs. The Call app is way ahead of this app in terms of variety and polish of the podcasts and music. It also seriously needs a loud traditional alarm sound option.
Wish there was more flexibility
I just wish there were a bit more flexibility in the functions. For example, I can only set one master “cue to unwind”, but my schedule is genuinely different during weeknights and weekends. I don’t know why we can’t set different cue times for different days, it’s quite frustrating when I want my routine to vary by just an hour each night without wasting electricity on the weekends. Also, there seems to be no way for me to enter “cue to unwind” manually or set the color-changing lights. It’s a good app/alarm clock but the functionality is really lacking :/
Worth the money
While I have only had hatch for a few months it has been the best investment in our parenting journey so far! I am in Australia so the only place I can get it is drtechlove and it wasn’t cheap, but I hope in the future as it becomes more popular and easy to access the price might go down!
Terrible product - Not Reliable
The fact that a product that is essential your baby’s rest would require an internet connection to be optimal is absolutely abysmal. Terrible product and user experience within the app. Buyer beware.
Easy to use
My wife and I have enjoyed beginning to use this app with our newborn. It’s easy and helps not having to lift up the unit to change the light colour or sounds. The only suggestion and point of development that I would suggest in making this device even more useful, is that although we can register the device on our phones, we both can’t be connected to the unit at the same time, which makes it a little difficult in the night when we get up at different times to check on our son, we can only use one of our phones, so my wife has to disconnect her phone so I can connect to it. But overall, simple and user friendly.
Alarm Clock Subscription??
What happened to just buying something? I get that it’s a fancy white noise sunrise alarm clock, but does it really need to be a subscription service too? Half the things on the app seem to be locked unless I subscribe. Essentially the only reason to pay for it is to have the option to turn on the wind down setting via the app - any of the subscriber-only alarms or wind-downs have been middling at best, but sometimes cringe-worthy.
App sucks
I love having the light come on automatically so my kids know when it's morning and they can get up. But the app is absolutely horrible. It's a giant hassle to change anything and often it won't save changes

Such a scam
It’s such a scam that you spend $170 on an ALARM CLOCK, but then to get the full use of it, you have to pay for $70/yr subscription?? Just for it to play more noises??? Like what the actual F. I can’t even try listening to a different bird chirping without it being locked behind a pay wall. Companies like hatch really don’t care about costumer satisfaction and it’s extremely disappointing. They only care about squeezing every dollar they can out of their consumers. It’s a bummer because I do honestly like the sunrise feature of the clock, but I never recommend it to anyone because I find the business model so stupid and greedy. The clock itself is already $170. If it came with the full features, I would say that it’s worth it and I would recommend it to everyone I know. But I just can’t get behind the greediness of putting alarm sounds behind a pay wall. Everything these days requires a subscription and I’m frankly sick of it. Do better Hatch. On top of this, the app is extremely glitchy. I try to edit old alarms and when I try to scroll, it’ll change the alarm to a random time - like sending to my 5:30 alarm to 8:15pm. It’s like it has a mind of its own. It also doesn’t always save new alarms I enter or save changes I’ve made to alarms. There have been a few times where I haven’t realized that my alarm didn’t save, and then my hatch doesn’t wake me up in the morning. I’ve had the app for awhile and have had it through multiple updates, but unfortunately there have been no changes to the glitching.
Poor user experience
The concept behind the Hatch Restore is great, and I really wanted to love it, but the app makes everything much more complicated than it needs to be. The interface is not intuitive at all, and even simple things like setting an alarm or changing a sound take way too many steps. For a product designed to help you relax and simplify your sleep routine, using the app is surprisingly frustrating.
Why is this so large?
Unit works great but app is laggy. It also takes up over 1.5GB of storage on my phone. How is that possible?!?
Game changer!
This app and kit is a game changer! A life saver! It’s genius and has been amazing with my 6 month old. Gone are the days where I accidentally wake her up to turn the white noise machine down, I can now do it from the comfort of my own bed! Love it.
Easier to drive to the ocean for noise
So you bought a Hatch. Do you want to update it in any way? Change the clock, update a schedule, or anything you’d assume would be easy? Well too bad. Get ready to reset and re-register your device. Have your WiFi password copied somewhere cause you’ll enter it 10 times when the reset process inevitably fails. Get ready to repeat the process any time the device gets unplugged or the power goes out.
Laggy sleep for everyone
I love this device. When it works….. I purchased this to have a calmer, more relaxed morning as I rise and open my eyes. However, between the yelling personal trainer telling me to get up and that he’s already had a protein shake or my alarm just not going off… it’s been more of a stressful morning. Please fix the glitches and make more alarms that are actually relaxing
Like the concept, not the app
Love the concept, but hate the app. It’s so slow, lags, and disconnects randomly/at the worst time.
Great in theory - TERRIBLE app
I’ve had the Restore 3 since June. I bought it for my summer house and used it for a couple of weeks in June. Loved it. It was a soothing way to wake up and I enjoyed the white noise and soundscapes. Came back in August and haven’t been able to connect to it for over a week. It has the old alarm schedule built in so it goes off every morning anyway but the time display is off by 20 minutes. Super annoying. And there is nothing I can do to change any of it. It simply refuses to connect. I’ve used it for all of a couple weeks, total. And I have lightning fast WiFi. This thing is frustrating beyond belief.
Slow app
It needs to be quicker in loading when launching the app. And when you leave the app and come back it’s never on the page you left it and have to to back and re pick it and wait for it to load again
Custom sounds would be nice
I will change my review to five stars if they would please add the ambient warp-core engine sound from Star Trek the next generation.
