So good I’m surprised it’s free!
It’s just nice that there’s an app out there that does what you want without constantly bombarding you with ads and limiting features Need to check the noise level? Use this app
What changed???
I used this app for years, but now it says the phone’s mic runs at 16k. The app says it needs to be 48k and no longer works. Same phone and same app, but it cannot measure. 😒

Loved it until recent update
No longer works after the most recent update. It says I need a different frequency microphone. I have never needed an external mic in the past, but I guess I now do.

I emailed myself a reading earlier today and it was never sent
Helpful
I started using this at work because I needed a way to document the noise level around my desk. The people making decisions about the workspace aren’t the ones sitting there all day, so having actual decibel readings made it easier to show that the constant noise wasn’t just my perception. I was surprised that I had to prove my desk sits around 65 dB for a basic desk job, but I’m glad I had a free tool available to measure it. I’ve also used it at home to check noise levels around my dogs so I can be more aware of what they’re being exposed to. I also appreciated that the app is completely free. There were no ads interrupting me and no in-app purchases getting in the way, which is becoming less common.
You broke it
Worked great, 4 or 5 Stars. Then you decided to update the app. Now it does not work or randomly works and cannot be trusted. Nice work, folks. How do I go back?
Stopped working due to Hearing Aids
If you connect hearing aids , iOS may cause app to not work because of this additional microphone. You will need to disable Bluetooth . Developer is responsive in helping to resolve issues.

Use to be great NOW YOU SCREWED US WITH THIS NEWEST UPDATE !!!!
Microphone unavailable fixed in 1.5.0(52)
I have used NIOSH for several years but it recently fails reporting my internal microphone operates at 16000 Hz and 48 kHz is required. My Starkey hearing aids connected via Bluetooth is the culprit. If I turn off Bluetooth, NIOSH works but Starkey Thrive app can’t connect. Thank you NIOSH for this accommodation.
Cannot stop measuring session
Pause button does not work. Cannot stop a recording.
Utility limited by inability to record in background
This is a great idea and is helpful to many, but a lot of folks can’t stand around at their employer with their phone on in their hand. The app stops recording whenever your screen turns off or locks…
No Apple Health or background
Lack of updates, resulting in no AppleHealth integration or background. iPhone SE 2, iOS 26.2. Please update.

Shut off bluetooth on Iphone while using with hearing aids.
If bluetooth is on app will will grab hearing aid mics instead of phone mics.
Mr.
Doesn’t work.
Two different values
I get two totally different values when I plug the phone in to charge, in the car, sitting in a parking lot. At least 10db difference.

Ok, but needs iPad UI update and dark mode
Would love to use this as a live audio tech instead of something like Smaart SPL, but the combo of no useable iPad UI and no dark mode make that a pretty poor experience. Otherwise a big fan of this app!
Check for “external” microphones!
Updating my earlier review. It is not intuitive, but if you have an external microphone setup, usually bluetooth (such as your hearing aids!) it may not work. And kudos to the support folks who saw my first review/complaint and got back to me within about 24 hours with this critical information. I use the app when working in an operating room, as we have a lot of different equipment that makes variable amounts of noise, and routinely get into the 70dB range and occasionally into the 80s. At which point, I see what we can turn off, to protect everyone’s hearing.
Very inaccurate with ios 18 (iPad Pro M4)
The app is showing extremely inaccurate levels on my new iPad Pro M4 with (ios 18). The readings are too high by about +25 dB compared to my iPhone 14 and old iPad (ios 17)! I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling, etc., but no improvement. This magnitude of error is beyond the manual calibration range (20dB). I have heard that there may be a bug in the app since the release of ios 18. I hope this is fixed, as the app has been working perfectly up til now, on multiple devices.
for sensitive souls
this app helps ❍☯︎• but where the maps integration for finding quiet places?
Accuracy?
Since I updated to iOS 18, the app seems quite inaccurate, showing levels of 106 dB during music that isn’t as loud as a typical vacuum cleaner. I have another similar app that is behaving similarly under iOS 18.
Meh
Doesn’t pick up low decibel sounds very well
Microphone no longer works (see update below)
Updated app wants 48kHz mic, my iPhone SE only has 24kHz? Please fix the update Update, problem seems to be related to using my phone thru my hearing aids. When I turn that off, the microphone works fine. Update 2, thank you to developer who explained that it’s the hearing aid microphone that is getting used instead of the phone microphone. To use the app, don’t have your phone playing thru your hearing aids.
Ungodly inaccurate and rarely works
This app worked great for a few months. It wasn’t very accurate compared to my calibrated OSHA meter, but within 10%. Then it just started giving absurd readings. Then no readings at all.
Ok

Bien pero…
Por qué no se puede usar con el dispositivo bloqueado? Es un incordio tener todo el rato la pantalla encendida para medir las dosis.
User interface not user friendly
The app is easy to start, but saving the reading data is not easy to do and you can loose all the data. Could be fixed by making the record button change to a save button when recording data.
Later when done
Let me run test first
Nonfunctional
Just locks up doesn't work on my iPhone
Other durations
I like the app. Would appreciate it if unsafe thresholds for any duration measurement were display live.
Doesn't work on my iPhone X
Under instantaneous level, it says overload in red letters and no readout is shown. I'm using the internal microphone. I turned off blutooth, to make sure I'm not accidentally connected to any headphones accidentally. I've restarted my phone.
needs frequency measurment
trying to follow my counties guidelines (clark county ,aka las vegas NV )regarding sound ordinances . decibel measurements are great . but the maximum permitted decibel level changes depending on the frequency of noise . the higher the frequency the higher the maximum decibel level is , lower freq lower decibel limit. unless i am misunderstanding how frequencies are measured or how to use all the features of your app. i see there is 3 diffirent letters for measuring specific frequency ranges . “z” being the lowest frequency range, and “a” is the highest range. cant rememeber the middle one … “b” i think? . tried all of them with little change in readings being given and not entirely understanding what changes when I change the “frequency letter”in your app . notice a slight difference in measurement but because i cant isolate specific frequencies . i get a range of frequency measurements all at once if measuring how loud system is heard outside of where the music is played . then hard to tell what frequency is being played at how many decibels . therefore would be hard to show(unless i just dont understand how to do this with instructions provided with the app) ,or “prove” my music is not exceeding my counties sound regulations. especially any law enforcement that decided to show up and investigate a disturbance or noise complaint. dont know if this app could help with that. ——miko——————————1
NIOSH
Works great
iPhone vs iPad
After downloading app on iPad it automatically loads on iPhone which is good BUT sound readings are twice as high on iPad than they are on iPhone when both devices are right next to each other. So, unable to tell which is accurate. Update 7/10/24. I’m told that the app is not optimized for iPad. It would be helpful if that information was provided. It actually says “works on this iPad”. I will use it on my iPhone as guide to understand noise levels.
Good app, but doesn’t support external mic on iPhone 14
Update- July 2024 I loved that this was a reliable FREE dosimeter app. Easy interface, and lots of useful features. I got an external lavalier mic set and the app would not switch to external mic. After going through a lot of tests to see if it was just a glitch, to include being in a 29db environment and isolating the external mic from the phone and gently touching the mic on the phone and then the lavalier mic, the app did not read the external mic. Still unable to switch to external mic. I thought it was the mic set I got- 15 bucks on Amazon, limited time price drop) so I ordered another lavalier mic set. I found another dosimeter app and figured I’d try to see if it would recognize the external mic. And it AUTOMATICALLY switched to the external mic. TLDR - app won’t switch to external mic on iPhone 14. Deleted app. 5 stars for app performance, 3/5 for not being compatible with external mic. 4/5 stars - -:- - keeps popping up. Had to delete the app. Will try to download it again later and see how it works…. Update: Creator contacted me and informed me how to fix the issue. Easy to do. Now, if I have any issues, I know what to do. 5 Stars
External mic not working
Love the app, great design and simplicity. But want to use it with my lightning port mic. It shows external mic as a option but when I select that it always jumps back to internal. I uninstalled app, connected external mic, tested it with voice memo and other apps and it works just fine. Then reinstalled NIOSH app gave it permission to access mic but it still won’t use external mic. Have rebooted phone. Still not happening. Iphone8 running 16.7.7
Free. Great.
Let’s me see how loud China is.
TWA, Dose not reported
App will not report dose or TWA; using an iPhone 14 Pro.
Glaring Bug in this version 1.2.5
Since this update. Stopping showing the large numbers during reading. Both on iPhone 11 and iPhone 7 pro. Please fix. Seems to also stick in recording when upside down. All these are new bugs.
Ok
It measures the noise level, registers it and saves it. Is there a way to “replay” the sound or the noise itself? I can’t use two apps at the same time, noise meter and recorder. Help please
