No Follow Up, Mostly Spam

9/10 notifications are things like “fire truck spotted in neighborhood”, “man speaking loudly to Chipotle worker”, “potential gas leak reported 3 blocks away”. No one needs to know any of that. Then the actual useful notifications have no follow up so there’s 0 value in them. “Potential gunshot reported .2 miles from you” - ok so was there a shooting? Is someone dead .2 miles from me or was a car just backfiring nearby and an elder person called the police? Not really sure there’s any value provided from this app other than the flooding weather alerts to be completely honest.

Confused

Yesterday I attempted to alert the public of a missing 73 yr old Hispanic male & I showed helicopter above & it telling the mama description & I was shut down. Not once but like 3-4 times. It was a active event while I was trying to record very important information that the public could help get the senior home. Why I was cut off idk during such an event. I have a question I thought we get compensated for these videos? Not that it even matters but the fact that it was advertised & told us on screen we do & I’ve posted a lot of videos. Not once have I gotten anything. Idk if anyone else has. When a corporation tells me they are I expect it. $300. Why lie?? Pretty disappointing that it was untrue.

Hides registered sex offenders behind a paywall

Absolutely unacceptable that the registered sex offender feature is hidden behind a paywall. Their faces, full names and locations are not acceptable unless you pay. I get it with all the other features but this is a baseline moral obligation that citizen should consider upon for its free memberships as well.

You will learn about the bloat of calls to 911 thats for sure

update: Citizen replied to my review to let me know that it is possible to tune your notifications but forgot to mention that feature is not available in the free version. Notifications didn’t used to be so bloated in the free version. This is not a helpful safety tool since it teaches you to go numb to the notifications. App does what its supposed to I guess— notify you of emergency response and calls to 911. The app is really bad at filtering out what needs to be a PSA and so you will get a bloat of unnecessary notifications for every 911 under the sun made by your neighbors. Like “person bit by bug” or “man watering plants outside.” You cant get the full context of the call without the premium subscription so what youre left with is just a ridiculous amount of notifications of events you don’t care about. Another example, around 4th of July you will get an increase of notifications for “shots fired” or “gunshots reported” and its just fireworks…If anything you will learn that a population of your neighbors are really paranoid and will report others for simply existing outside.

Notice

I notice the app no longer has the Live Helicopter live view. I wonder why. Is it maybe because cops do more that they shouldn’t be doing? Lawsuits are always open here in USA!!!!!!!! USA!!!!USA!!!!

★☆☆☆☆ United States · v0.1307.2 · 1 Sept 2026

Unless notification filter settings clutter actually important things.

This app could be useful but it gives me 1000 notifications a day for things that don’t matter. I have it set to only give me the most important things, I’d expect a bomb or natural disaster, but instead I keep getting things like what inspired me to write this review. “Man Experiencing Chest Pain .9 miles away” is so important to Citizen that my phone buzzed. There is nothing that notification does but make me feel sad for whoever is maybe having a heart attack and somehow I’m getting another notification for it when there is nothing for me to do. I double checked and the only notification category I gave selected is “Citywide. Large incidents Citizen determines important for everyone in the City to know.” Dear Citizen, someone having chest pain in NYC is not a citywide problem.

So annoying

Hate hate hate the new update to send a morning update every day at 8 AM. Who wants to wake up to ‘Morning Briefing: 10 killed, 14 critically injured, 5 others shot, 3,000 people missing in earthquake’???? Dumping the app until this gets fixed. Edit: No way to turn it off. Already tried, only option is to delete the app. Good riddance.

Now forces location permission

The recent update for “bug fixes and performance updates” now makes it so that if you do not give access to your location, you cannot use the app for anything other than general reports of a few things from random places around the country. No longer useful. Invasive. Sucks because it genuinely did provide me useful safety information in the past, but I’m not willing to compromise my personal privacy choices.

Could’ve been completely free

It doesn’t make sense to me how we have to pay a fee to listen to radio scanners, access events from months ago and information on offenders when that is all public information and should not be charged. I rather this app run ads on the corner of the screen than making us pay $7 per month

Right idea wrong execution

It’s a horrible app in my opinion because it hides information that should be public like why is it that if there’s a sexual defend and just moved in and down the street from me his information is hidden, but I can access it publicly anywhere else, and then on top of that I have to pay to access it on the app not only that but you have to pay to see a lot of things on this app you have to pay to see reports you have to pay to hear the radio over the and so on and so forth don’t get me wrong. The app is good but the execution about it I just don’t like the fact that I have to pay to see why there’s a sex offender living right down the street from me

★★★☆☆ United States · v0.1303.0 · 10 Aug 2026

Good app with a lot more potential.

I really like the idea behind the app. Being able to stay informed about what's happening nearby, rather than just seeing broader county-wide news, makes it genuinely useful. I also like the option to livestream incidents and get paid for contributing.
Before posting this review, I spent months trying to share this feedback with the team directly. I contacted support via email and also reached out on X and Instagram, but I never received a response. What made it more frustrating is that those social media accounts were clearly active and posting regularly the whole time, yet my messages sat there unread and unanswered.

Since I haven't been able to reach anyone, I wanted to share it here instead: 1. Increase the free alert radius from 1 mile to 2 miles, while keeping larger radiuses as a premium benefit. One mile is just too small of a circle to be useful, especially since a lot of what you'd actually want to know about happens right outside it. Bumping it to two would make the free experience much better while still leaving plenty of incentive to subscribe for wider coverage. 2. Be more responsive to user feedback. I understand support teams get busy, but after months of trying through multiple channels, and seeing those channels stay active while my messages went ignored, it was disappointing not to get any acknowledgment at all.
Overall, Citizen is a great app with a unique purpose and a lot of potential. I genuinely want to see it keep improving, and I hope the team considers feedback like this in future updates. Worked it into both spots since it strengthens point 2 as well: the complaint isn't just "no reply," it's "no reply while visibly online," which is harder to write off as a busy support queue.

Ignores user preferences

Just deleted this app. It sends an insane number of incidents per day (rather delayed from incident start) from remote locations and, although I have spent weeks trying different settings to reduce notifications, the app continues to ignore my preferences. I can effectively get the same result by just reading the national news.
