A publication you cannot afford to be withou
A totally indispensable fortnightly arrival - the breadth of its subject matter never fails to amaze (and instruct).
Appalling subscriber support
The paper is great and the app is very good, but customer service is appalling. It proved impossible to renew a gift subscription. They charged me three times (eventually refunded). Then they locked me out of the app before my sub had ended. Finally sorted out (with an entirely new subscription); hopefully no more problems.
Love it!
I really enjoy this subscription, but it’s a little blinky. IRight now I can’t figure out how to view any issue except the current one- what happened to the archive? Update: I searched the question online and see that the archive has a separate web address. So no problems, perfectly happy. I also got a response from the developer on this- they are very helpful.
Can’t swipe to the next article anymore
It has improved very slowly over the years , but following the last update it no longer lets you swipe right to go to the next article, after reading for a while. Most random, bizarre error. You have to exit the current issue, then try and find the issue again, which isn’t easy, if you’re a little behind. Also, it does not let you load the ToC for some reason. The Back button takes you straight to the list of issues, not the ToC. Very annoying. Usability is down again.
Please enable immersive reading option
The app works great but with this caveat - When reversing the scrolling direction of Saved articles, The 'Saved' ribbon and the back button appear on top and vanish, once resuming the normal scrolling direction. This affects the reading experience. If the 'Saved' ribbon and the back button will only come up upon tapping or some such control, it would result in a seemless reading experience. Kindly consider to include this feature.
Please shorten the app name to ‘LRB’
Currently the title underneath the app icon cuts off ‘LondonReview…’ as it is too long. I realise this is a niche request, however the issue triggers my OCD.
Great writing, awful app
The LRB has some of the best writing in the UK, no doubt, but the app is dreadful - even if you can get it to recognise your subscription number, which will likely involve a battle, it’s very poorly designed. There are no options to increase font size or boldness (the text colour looks very cool, but is not good for those with poorer eyesight), nor any other options that readers might enjoy to make the best use of the technology. It’s still worth subscribing, but prepare to wait a long time for a response from technical support when the app won’t let you sign in.
Content good - app currently annoying
Major complaint is annoying inability to swipe between articles once you start reading them. Otherwise works fine.
Incomplete application
There is no digital version of the print edition. It is unfortunate, reading experience is incomplete.

Buggy and basic
I download back issues and mark favourites and they disappear. I get numerous errors when launching on 4G or if the app is backgrounded for any length of time. Not sure why there isn’t a remote server user profile that stores more about my use and bookmarks than just account info. It’s a shame, the content is magnificent.
Can’t access my subscription
I paid for a subscription but keep getting a message that I don’t have a subscription. I’m going to pursue a chargeback with my credit card company
Good but...
Can you add more colour options for the background, light and dark are too limited.
No bookmark
There should a bookmark function that allows you to jump to specific text in an article when you return to it.
Content is great. App leaves something to be desired.
The content is top notch. However, the app has some frustrating flaws: * dark mode not available for evening reading * options to adjust text size and spacing are quite limited * no cross-device syncing * no way to switch to paging instead of infinite scroll * like the News app, it’s easy to accidentally swipe to the next story when you meant to scroll down reading the current one. Unlike the News app, it won’t remember your place if that happens and you swipe back. Overall the Kindle used to offer a much better experience reading this magazine, but that is no longer an option.

I love the LRB and have subscribed to print edition for 20 years. But app seems pretty useless. Search function is hopeless.
Greta publication, ok app
I love the LRB but I really wish this app supported dark mode. It’s so jarring to see a white page when everything else on my phone is dark.
New downloads keep crashing
Content great, but newly downloaded issues keep crashing. Very painful to deal with and annoying.
Dynamic Type
I very much enjoy reading the LRB, but it would be more pleasurable if the App supported Dynamic Type, As an aging adult, I can only peer at the micro-print for short periods before fatiguing.
Everything you need
I always look forward to the next edition of the LRB. Whilst the long-form essay isn’t to everyone’s liking I enjoy the opportunity to read an in depth view, especially on history and the arts Well worth the cost of subscription, especially as you gain access to the digital edition and archive. It would be welcome if the digital edition was available on all versions of kindle rather than just the kindle fire.
Infuriating keeps failing to work offline
I mainly want to read on the tube. Unfortunately most times you try and open this offline it will either fail to open the feed at all of it will have deleted all the issues you downloaded before.
Unstable
Recent issues crash quickly on iPad after pressing the Read link. Not a welcome feature when postal distribution is also unstable.
Redundant if you have web subscription
I would not recommend this app at all. The best way to access the LRB is still via a print/web subscription. You get access to its complete archive, which is searchable, and relatively easy to access on mobile devices. This app adds little to that. There is no search function, and a subscription to the app version would not give you access to the full LRB archive online -- you only get access to the issues that fall within your subscription dates. The app also crashes quite a bit, often requiring a restart in the middle of reading an article -- very annoying as you often lose your place in these 5000 word long pieces. The LRB still has some work to do to make online access smoother on its web version, but so far, I would stick to the web subscription.
Mostly good, but I'd like to save articles outside the app occasionally
In the twenty odd years I've been a subscriber, I've saved articles maybe a dozen times. On the website its still quite possible to save to pdf, but on ipad I haven't figured out how to do so. Annoying. Otherwise a good reading experience for an electronic device.
I’m converted!
I’m not really one for reading anything longer than a tick box menu on an App, and still prefer my real paper LRB. But Royal Mail is HOPELESS at the moment (no delivery for 9 days, and counting) so I couldn’t wait any longer… and it’s proved easy to use, easy to read, and easy to enjoy. I’m converted! But I would still like to see the postman again… please
Needs more work
This app is pretty frustrating - settings are limited, font size, scrolling and other features don’t quite work as you would expect them to
Poor app design
Nothing wrong with the content - of course! It’s the LRB after all. But the app has a few annoyances, in particular: when scrolling it’s all too easy to slip slightly sideways, which takes you to the next or previous article. Then when you go the other way to get back to where you were, it drops you at the beginning of the piece you were reading. If you were near the end of a long article this is a pain!
Can't download issues
Tapping any issue just gives me the spinning icon forever. Not possible to buy or read anything. No error message, so I'm not sure what is going on.
Beautiful and easy to use but with an annoying bug
Great navigation between articles and a clean and easy to use interface, but whenever I select text (to look up etc) the app freezes and I can scroll down, change articles or do anything else - so I have to close the app and restart.
Badly designed app
Unlike other subscribed magazines the LRB has an app bad enough to make you consider cancelling your subscription. If you search for something it kicks you out and asks you to subscribe. It would be inconvenient to out in your details, but don’t worry: this isn’t even an option. Round and round you go. You have to check by edition to find something you want to read. And let’s be honest there’s always quite a lot you can’t be arsed to read in each individual edition. It’s prehistoric and typically LRB. Back catalogue and ability to search and access it. This is the key to subscriber satisfaction in the modern age, guys.
I really wanted this app, but...
I'm a new subscriber to LRB. Love the content, but the small font in the print edition is not very readable to my macular-degenerated eyes unless I have unusually good light. I was so happy to see that there is now an app I can run on my iPad Pro M2. I downloaded the issue I'm currently reading, January 5. Nice reading on my big bright screen! But just for the first few articles - then on the "Magpies" piece, the app crashes immediately. Whenever I go back in, even if I clear memory, "Magpies" comes up and the app crashes again. I am unable to navigate away from it. So it's back to the eyestrain print until this is fixed.
Generally great, but with one annoying habit
I find myself reading the LRB ever more in the app. However there’s one thing that drives me bananas. A swipe, perhaps inadvertent, to another article lands you back at the head of the page when you return. On long articles this is incredibly annoying. A similar phenomenon can happen when passing from landscape to portrait.
Handy app but lacks setting controls
Handy to have but the text size on the ipad version is far too large. Unfortunately the app has no text size controls, so that one is stuck with extremely annoying and impracticable text size. This needs to be fixed in the next version.
Please add more font sizes and remember where I stop reading

Arrrrgh, so bloody frustrating!!!
Attempting to look up word meaning in dictionary definition on iPad freezes the app with no (apparent) means to escape aside from a nasty uninstall and reinstall. For me, getting past the first paragraph of any article in LRB is therefore pretty much impossible. Emailed support, but no response for last couple’f weeks.
Good app
Nice app which is simple to use and reproduces the look of the paper edition. Would be good to have a bigger range of text sizes: this version just offers small, big, enormous, and giant. Can we get a medium?
Review of the app not the contents
This is a fairly decent app overall, so 4 stars, except that the print on the iPad version is too small & cannot be enlarged, so downgraded to 3 stars.
Not compatible with Look Up on iPad
Every time I use Apple's Look Up function to search for the definition of a word, the app freezes up, refuses to scroll and has to be restarted.

Hard to navigate, the “among the ancients” subscription area seems impossible find!
Good - even better with a couple of tweaks
I wonder if the developer could put in a search function? It would really enhance the experience of using the app for me. If I’ve forgotten to save something to the scrapbook it’s really hard to find again. The other thing that would improve it for me is if it was easier to get the menu lines to pop up - it feels like you really have to work to make them appear in order to go back to the contents page or home page when you’re inside an article. Other than that I do enjoy the minimalist look - leaves the words to speak for themselves and doesn’t distract you.
A little difficult
I find the digital editions not easy to download and not as easy to read as the printed papers,so,I always wait until I receive the posted copy!
Superb magazine, app could be a bit better
App could be more user friendly (e.g. easier to access scrapbook and add favourites), more responsive, and ideally with more features (e.g. article search).
Terrible Digital format
Content may be good, but format makes it too hard to read on a phone. Follow the @Newyorker. I subscribe to both. Read the New Yorker all the time, rarely read LRB, solely because of the digital format.
Long articles, some very interesting
The poems are usually opaque, very occasionally interesting. Book reviews can be very long and interesting, full enough to save you the trouble of reading some important nonfiction books. The LRB sometimes has lengthy and really interesting articles on major questions of the day. A memorable case was the entire issue given over to what really happened on the day of the Grenfell Tower fire and on the days afterwards. Too often we get long articles about obscure people, and letters putting right extremely minor questions about who did or didn’t say something or wasn’t or was somewhere. In thirty years’ time the LRB will have an article about a minor artist who did or did not spend time with one of Banksy’s relatives. But when it’s good, it’s very good.
Search function please
Great content but unfortunately the app has no search function so no access to the older articles which as a subscriber I pay to see. I have to go on the website for that which isn’t ideal. Please add a search function LRB. Thankyou.
