Great for getting started
I’m relatively new to calligraphy and wanted an app that would allow me to practice without spending all the money on equipment and paper until I felt more comfortable. Perfect for practice

Usability
Clunky.
I like it, does have some bugs (update 2)
* free version is basically just a sample and you’re not going to get much out of it, there is a small (under $5) one time charge to use the app as intended. No ads, no subscription, no endless series of in-app purchases. * variety of fonts, many many color options, some nice extras * I strongly recommend reading the user’s guide in “getting started”, there’s a lot that the app has to offer that won’t be obvious without it * I was basically just looking for somewhere where I could make letters calligraphy-style, without the wide side of the “pen” changing directions on me unexpectedly. So, obviously this app met that expectation but it also went way beyond it. And I thought I’d enjoy myself but I wasn’t expecting to enjoy myself this much. I downloaded this app maybe two days ago and have been using it more than I’ve been doing anything else other than sleeping. * the “words” section is prone to crashing, so don’t put a lot of effort into that section if you’re new to the app. When you use it more you get a sense of what causes it to crash and can usually avoid it crashing at bad times and losing your creations. * I don’t think I’ve had it crash when making art directly from “layers gallery” or “stencils models”. I enjoy tracing the lettrines (extra fancy letters) a lot. For some reason I can’t figure out you can get a grid or lines in that part of the app, but not the same sorts of lines you get in the practice sections of the app which is just weird imo. * This isn’t a shiny subscription based app with perfect function and new features all the time. It’s more like the early apps. Personally I think that’s a good thing. * it’s been idk a month and I still spend maybe an hour or two every day on this. Very calming.
App force quits
Anytime while doing words for example and you choose a caps letter then switch to a lowercase letter it just closes the app completely which is ridiculous seeing as how I paid for the app. I have u uninstalled and reinstalled still doesn’t work right! It happens bile doing other things as well and you really should give some instructions for the freehand writing for when it doesn’t force quit! Fix the dang issue or refund money and make this app free if it’s going to force quit for 50% of the app!
Good but some bugs and suggestions
It is pretty thorough with a lot of hand (font) options. They’re beautiful and pretty easy. But there are certain things like making a nice serif that’s tricky. It would be nice if it had a little video on each letter and hand. Also, like the L, at the end where it ticks up and thicken on the right, how can I do that with a digital pen? Or even a calligraphy pen & nibs without changing nibs? Initially, it started great but then the app keeps registering my stroke and stops halfway and the whole page shifts instead. Maybe it’s my pen’s battery? I love that it’s free with possible upgrades. One thing I can’t stand are very limited apps for a free trial. Definitely worth a try!
Not the best way to learn!
Calligraphy is NOT taught on learning how to write the alphabet from A-Z. It is taught however in groups of letters that resemble each other.... not totally impressed!

I’ve learned so much about Calligraphy. Well worth the upgrade.
Practically unusable
You can get better practice material by googling free calligraphy worksheets. The description of the app leaves out that after the initial purchase you need to make additional purchases to unlock features.

The only reason I paid is because of the reviews. I do have to say never doing calligraphy, and using this best thing to do . I have had it about an hour and can do some of the letters without tracing . Great teaching tool. The challenges are hard , you have to be perfect . I love it. I suggest this to anyone who wants to try this or just get better at handwriting.

Contrary to what this app says, it is not free. The only part that is free is the practicing of the alphabet!!
Great app if you are precise
I’ve been doing calligraphy for 40+ years. This is a great app for beginners and intermediate writers. The one drawback, IMO, is that the app grading is ridiculously exacting. I like to deviate, just a bit, to make my letters more “me.” With this app, creative flair is stifled. Also, if I want to get the letters for a certain words, the caps and lowercase letters are listed as different fonts, so I cannot practice someone’s name, for example. Very frustrating. I do love this app for practicing my calligraphy, though. It is so nice to be able to erase mistakes on the screen! :) IRL, calligraphy with ink and paper is not very forgiving with mistakes. This is a great app to learn to write beautifully!
Streckenweise okay
Ich verwend die App auf einem 2017er iPad Pro 12.9". Das UI ist unscharf und überhaupt nicht auf den Apple Pencil ausgelegt. Gerade letzteres ist bei einer Kalligraphie-App äußerst störend. Außerdem ist das UI-Design eher von vor 10 Jahren und nach heutigen Maßstäben nicht Intuitiv, nicht Übersichtlich und etwas unpraktisch. Mit Abstürzen hatte ich aber nicht zu kämpfen. Auch ist es etwas störend, dass einem die App kein Feedback gibt, wie gut oder schlecht man die aktuelle Lektion gemacht hat. Für Jeden, der einfach nur mal ein bisschen rumprobieren möchte, ist die App aber alle Male okay. Wer nur mit handwerklich gut gemachten Apps vorlieb nehmen mag, ist hier fehl am Platze. Ob man mit dieser App tatsächlich einen ernsthaften Einstieg in die Welt der Kalligraphie schafft, mag ich nicht zu urteilen. Ich hab lieber einfach ein bisschen mit rumgespielt. Das war okay.
Good app but could be better with some more tools
I found the calligraphy app worth enough for the purpose of learning and practicing calligraphy. It’s interface is clean an clear. The practice guidebook is self content. The practice exercises are presented in graded manner. Exercises cover almost all the essential aspects of calligraphic writing. I think it could be batter with some more helping tools like line and curve controller, auto shape fine tuners, shape tracer and vectoriser etc.

Great app but a small detail missing
A nice touch would be to have the letters actually join up to make words instead of just letters side by side, but it’s still a great app to practice different styles of font

What’s happened?
I spent hours using this app. Gave it a break for a while. Now, it’s full of bugs. Shuts down randomly, without saving current progress; freezes when using the undo feature while setting up words. Great app, lots of fun, but incredibly frustrating to use at the moment.
Get this app, it’s great!
I’ve been interested in calligraphy since childhood and used up reams of paper back then practicing. I recently wanted to get started again and wondered if there is an app - there are! This one is, by far, the very best. Easy to use, lots of hands, and the price is incredibly low. If you’re interested in calligraphy, don’t hesitate. Get this app and try it (it’s free to try!). Be warned, however, this is highly addictive! You’re going to have good penmanship!
Very little free
Was all going so well until everything other than ‘getting started’ stoped working without warning. I assume it’s now time to pay although there is nothing to explain this - pretty poor!
Lacking just one thing.
Oh wow, I am so glad I found this app! I first learnt the joys of calligraphy many years ago but am so out of practice. Came across this app while searching for apps to put on my new iPad, as did a few others which I tried but quickly deleted after I realised how good this one is. Only one complaint I have is that I have three favourite styles that I would rather practice on over any of the others so I would find the ability to ‘favourite’ the ones I really wanna do so I don’t have to search through to find a particular one when I’ve forgotten the name of it. If the developer reads this and can add this feature I would love it even more!
Terrible lag on iPad Pro
I was trying to use this on an iPad Pro, but input to screen lag kills all the joy
Have to Pay out of the Blue
I downloaded this app around some months ago and the whole app was free to use, and now when I went on it, you had to pay for 80% of the content. Sorta unfair, if you’re going to make your users pay for a feature I’d prefer it weren’t a pre-existing free one.
Life saver
I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t found this app. It seriously calms me down and helps me get used to how the pencil on my iPad Pro works. I love the app and I wouldn’t change anything about it. It simple, meditative, and soothing. I suggest anyone whether they know calligraphy or not try this is you have anxiety. It really works. Also a great DBT skill package if you think about it. This app helps you practice mindfulness, distraction, and probably a couple others I’ve missed. You go developers!!
Not good
Horrible app. And misleading. Used one day and the next it is charging fees to unlock. Not free and not worth buying :!!
Needs sample brush strokes
There are a few places where I can’t figure out exactly how to create the stroke they show. It would be helpful if there was an option to view how it’s done.
Functional but limited
The app does work of a sorts, allowing you to choose between several different hands (uncial, italic, etc) and trace the letters, pen width can be changed and ink colour. But I found the interface clugy and unpredictable. Try as I might I couldn't get clean paper to practice beyond a,b, c, or d.
Cool and simple
It’s pretty cool and very simple but it lags too much. Going to delete the app. Too amateur.
Love it
This app is wonderful, it walks you through perfectly for a beginner or you can dive in if you've studied before. I've been looking to study calligraphy for years, and I'm tired of plain cursive. I've had everything I need for a long time but didn't have enough knowledge to execute the letters correctly. I'm a visual learner and I've learned more on this app in 5 mins than I have reading books I had to pay for. I need to get an apple pen because my little tablet pen isn't working as good as it could be, but I am so excited to keep learning and finally be able to write in my book of shadows and have it look beautiful. Thank you so much for this app!
No tutorial
After you download for the first time, the app should run a tutorial at first. I opened the app and there is no info on how to use the app.

The only problem is I can’t change pen colors can someone tell me how or can someone on the app fix it please
Brush performance needs improvement
The app is very good in all ways, except for the very important aspect of the brush performance. I am using a 1st gen iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil and almost every letter has at least one stroke ruined by the brush lagging and then snapping back. If this were addressed, it would be an easy 5 star app.
About time I find it

Not Free
You know what I hate? I hate apps that claim to be free and a few days later, everything is locked with purchase messages! That is the case with this app. Why not tell people what the charge is up front rather than bait and switch tactics. This may very well be a good app but I wouldn't know because I never really had the opportunity to try it before it locked!
Pretty good
I am still deciding if I am going to purchase the full app, but what I have tried so far is good. Just not sure if this is the style of lettering I want to concentrate on, perhaps looking for more modern style of brush lettering, but very good for teaching how to form the letters correctly.

Free version is useless
The free app has so little functionality that it takes ages to find anything you can actually do in it. Almost every exercise needs to be purchased to unlock it, I would have been more likely to have bought it if they were just upfront and charged for it rather than pretend it’s free but disable everything.
