This latest update has streamlined the functionality. I etnusiastically recommend without reservation. I’ve always relied on the mobile version. As the title states, love it even more!
Can’t access years of citations anymore
If you don’t keep paying for the upgrades, you will lose access to your citation database. Be ready to keep upgrading to keep access.
Bookends in Context
I use Bookends in conjunct with Mellel. Other than that, it‘s pretty good, but doesn‘t beat Zotero. Certainly not „alternativlos“ but a very good app especially when used with Mellel for your workflow. Its continued development is of course essential, but we see with other apps not a given; so a big thumbs up for zhat!
needs further development
The iOS counterpart of the Mac Bookends application is helpful on the go. However, it lacks a number of important features the Mac app offers. The interface is outdated and cumbersome to use. It would be great if the developer improved the iOS app further given the annual subscription fee, which I am going to keep paying for a better and more functional app. Such features as “Replicate as Book Chapter” (very useful in the Mac app) would be welcome. Many academics work from their iPads and a good-quality iOS Bookends app would be desirable.
Additional 50%
On top of buying this, there is a sub for pro features. This has had a 50% increase without major functionality change. As an occasional user, I’ll have to subscribe when needed rather than just leave running I’m sure it was a commercial decision. Mine too

Poor user interface. ICloud sync is broken
Title says it all. To be clear, developers admit that multiple users have reported problems with iCloud sync and in-app purchases, but they dismiss the problem as a bug in iOS. Funny how no other app that I use has the same problem. In any case, there’s no resolution and the app isn’t usable. Edited to add: developer response is completely fair and accurate. My initial review was overly fueled by stress from my impending dissertation defense. Unfortunately, the app still isn’t usable for me.
Gut aber Abo-Modell fragwürdig
Die App ist intuitiv, verständlich und als Wissenschaftler brauchbar. Etwas ärgerlich finde ich, dass ich als Mac-User (der schon 79,99€ bezahlt hat) sowohl 10,49€ jährlich als auch noch 11,99€ zusätzlich für die iOS Version zahlen muss. Das war mir vorher nicht klar. Ohne Synchronisierung erschließt sich mir der Sinn einer iOS Version nicht.
Info syncs, but pdf files not
I have had this problem off and on over the different iterations of this app. Somehow the documentation combined with support communications are just opaque enough to confuse me and prevent thorough troubleshooting. It doesn’t help that the background processes aren’t explained anywhere. I’m pretty adept at figuring stuff out in the increasingly complicated (and in some aspects, fussy) Apple platform ecologies, but this repeated breakage of syncing the PDF files is nudging me to the edge of choosing a different LMS. I’m a customer, but I don’t feel like it with this app/developer. I feel like an exception and a source of irritation whenever seeking help. It’s a lousy feeling to have when I’m just trying to get work done.

Great app
Been using Bookends for Mac and iOS for a couple years now and it is rock solid. It allows me to have a huge library available everywhere and always in sync. Developers have been highly responsive and helpful.
Waste of money
One of the citation tracking apps that you try and give up after a while. Waste of money, regret that I bought it.
Effective on the go
Love it! The app is so convenient. I love the option to dictate notes. I don’t love the fact that the option for adding a new note is always at the end of notes. It is not a big deal if you have 4-5 notes attached to a document, but if you have 50+ notes... it is a lot of scrolling (given that every time a new note is created, you land on the first note created for the document). There is hope that in future it will have a desktop application compatible with Windows and MS Office. For now it is very convenient phone app that allows taking notes on the go (for example like while you are waiting in the car for your kid to finish training session...)
Using iOS sync across devices takes more than a day
I came to Bookends as a refugee from the once nearly perfect software Sente, which sadly went out of business. It’s been a difficult transition. Bookends overall is comparatively more wonky and less user friendly. But the biggest problem I have experienced with Bookends is the iOS sync feature. As I move frequently between devices (iPad, desktop at home, and laptop at work), I need instant sync as I pickup on a new device where I left off on an old device. As I use this for teaching and research, the timeliness of accessing highlights, PDFs, and notes matters. I have found that changes in highlights or attachments entered on one device sometimes requires 24 hours or longer to show up on the other devices. This may be out of Bookends’ hands, as it might be an iOS cloud sync issue. As an end-user, I don’t care whose fault it is because it ruins my workflow, and Bookends should address it.
The app has to be completely rewritten
You can’t add PDFs; editing references is bug-prone; the UX is awful. On the plus side, the PDF reader (as provided by standard Apple frameworks) is amazing.
Epic deep linking
I stumbled upon this in my pursuit of an app that allows nuanced deep linking to pdf pages across ios and desktop. I was blown away to find that bookends handles this very well. I am now embarking on the onerous task of swapping my general pdf library to bookends.
Great for searching but not organizing.
I like the search function however everything else is useless without syncing. Having to pay to transfer references from one device to the others is not functional. I would like access to my database files on the iPhone and iPad Pro. Then syncing would not matter. I am considering another application over Bookends since the syncing and citation formatting is terrible on mobile devices. The subscription model only works if there will be added features over and above the MacPC version. In this case the application is useless on mobiles. Improve the importing, exporting, and folder organization features like on the laptop version will change my review.

PSA for those considering this app
There are many good things about this app. And the support is fast. So no complaints there. However, nowhere in the product description here or on their website do they tell you that the “pro” features do not work, if you have “iCloud optimized storage“ running. So, to use this with iCloud I have to limit the functionality of my iCloud? This is a total deal breaker for me. And it should have been noted upfront as an issue, I feel. I did contact the developers and they did refund me the Mac app costs. So I applaud them for that. But this is a major issue and, as a customer, it should have been made clear to me before purchase.
Best Reference Manager on the scene, but still not that good
Bookends has been the best reference manager available for macOS/iOS for a couple of years now. Still, this doesn’t mean it’s very good. The iPadOS version is actually the better one of the two. But still, it urgently needs a Status Read/Unread function, and nested folders. It is stable and reliable, but sometimes it can make you want to scream in frustration because the workflow/UI design is so poor. The macOS version is dated with a clunky interface. It badly needs a total UI revamp. Also, it should be on the Mac App Store, so you can leave a review! I really want Bookends to work well. I would happily pay more across all platform.
A really great app for academics
This is a great app. It’s actively maintained and updated, and the iPad app has all the bells and whistles like support for multi-window (which is a must if you want to read a pdf and add notes or keywords to the meta-data), slide-over, etc. It’s support for Apple Pencil hand-written notes is top-notch, much better than anything else I’ve tried (ReadCube Papers). All in all, a wonderful app.
Essential feature updates only for subscription
The standard version of the app is pretty much neglected and all new features are exclusive to subscribers. Many of these features are essential for this app to be useful on iOS.
Dropped endnote and didn’t look back.
After seemingly endless glitches and incompatibilities of endnote, I switched to Papers, by Mek & Tosj. Later bought and merged into an almost nonfunctional beta, I had to let it go and transfer my library to a new reference manager (always painful) that would play well with office365. Of the options available, I chose bookends for three reasons. First, very responsive support; support was never high on my list of cool features with either endnote or papers, but bookends changed my view of how nice it is to be an appreciated customer. Second, I frequently shift my writing between my MacBook and iPad Pro, and bookends syncs well and supports this type of workflow. Third, Bookends is a great reference manager and doesn’t try too hard to do too many things beyond that purpose....i.e. it’s not bloatware.
Promising but lacks a lot of functionalities
Used to be there were Papers and PaperShip, now Bookends appears to be the few games left in town for professional reading/annotation tools for researchers. Among the many functions lacking: * Ability to parse out a given PDF to get at least the title, authors and abstract into the meta data when there’s no search result available. * Ability to connect to services such as Mendeley to get the existing meta data/pdfs down. * Remember the state of the app when quitting. * After adding a pdf with no meta data, there appears to be no way to get meta data into the entry (at least not reliably). * The workflow at times seem nondeterministic, e.g., when finding a paper from in-app search and adding attachment pdf later, sometimes the paper only appears in the search section, not in the main “all documents” list. * Dark mode still needs a lot of fixing.
Wish they would invest in the app version
Please add more sort functionality like colour tags.
Close to Perfection
After using Zotero for years, it took me a little while to get used to Bookends. However, it’s been well worth the effort. It does almost everything that Zotero does, plus a whole lot more. Additionally, it’s easier to organize, and is visually more appealing. The one thing I miss is how Zotero has a browser extension that makes it super simple to create a reference for a website with all the information pre-populated. If Bookends adds this feature, it will be the best reference manager I’ve ever used by a long shot. Altogether, Bookends extra features are endlessly satisfying and useful. And for those who are up for a little scripting, Bookends invites you to be creative! I love this app and am really enthusiastic about using it for years to come.
pandering
The software is beautifully designed to support a scholarly workflow and then, out of nowhere, it interrupts, groveling for a software rating. And then, if you give a low rating, you get follow-on emails complaining about it. Now back to work. Where was I?
Export text color
Bookends is pretty easy to navigate once you get the hang of it, but for some reason, when I export a formatted citation and copy it to Word for example, it outputs the citation with the text color set to white. This hasn‘t happened with any other exports like the temporary citation etc, and although it doesn‘t make the app unusable, it is definitely a hassle

Not sold
This seems like a nice reference manager, but I’m not committed to it yet. The iOS version is too closed, because the only way to get things into the app is.... from inside the app. There are two methods: One, enter a url or doi in quick add. Two, use the programmed searches for Google Scholar, PubMed, et cetera. This might have been ok ten years ago, but not today. I get info on new articles through RSS feeds, email, and more. With Bookends you can’t even browse the Arxiv lists of new entries, because it doesn’t have a full internal browser. This would be ok if there were share sheets to get info in from other apps, but there’s not. Organization is not great. There are smart folders, which are wonderful, but there is only one level of folders, and they can completely take over the sidebar. There are no tags. I think you can simulate tags by putting info in notes, but I haven’t tried that yet. What Bookends does, it does well, but overall, I think the app is not modern. A modern app would have nested folders, tags, share sheets, and drag and drop into folders.

Doesn’t Sync PDFs properly and will delete your entire library
I spend $50 bucks for the desktop version and another $20 for the mobile version just so that this software could delete my entire library. It’s terrible and I wouldn’t put much stock into some of these “reviews.” Please don’t waste your money. I went online and the developer seems to not know how to deal with channges in Catalina, but he’s happy to take your hard earned money for his nonfunctional software.

I use Bookends for Mac OS X exclusively, after having tested several other competing reference managers. Both iOS and OS X instances are awesome. Managing my research is no longer a chore. Job well done by Sonny Software. Top stuff!
Buy subscription again by mistake in “In-app purchase”
There is one risk for customer I want to highlight. I have bought standard version and pro subscription In “In-app purchase”. But these two buying options are still active there!!!!! They should be inactive to reminder users that they have bought the products. I clicked the pro subscription and found Apple store asked me to confirm the purchase!!! If you don’t remember your previous purchase you probably will buy twice! Please deactivate the purchase option which has already been purchased! Please fix this problem and make a new release ASAP!
A permanent part of workflow
I started using bookends when the app i was using stopped updating to focus on new and improved app. Got tired of waiting. Tried the free options, more than one version of Endnote. I kept coming back here. I finished grad school, and still use it to keep documents and references handy for just in time training. It pulls correct data from pdf metadata 95+% of the time and many time it’s the pdf files that’s wrong. I sync between Mac, iPad and iPhone They have been responsive every time I’ve had an issue and helpful, even when it was operator error.
Difficult to navigate
Just a pain in general.
Good enough but inconsistent
Great app if you have institutional access to circumvent paywalls -- especially good if you just want a simple PDF manager (the desktop app, however, has amazing configurability which necessitates an appropriate appreciation for metatag structuring and REGEX). Searches are fast and accurate if you know the bare minimum about research citation search terms and functions. Annotation works very well. Some issues: 1. EZproxy config doesn't persist, at least in my case; i'm required to input two pairs of school credentials when I should only need to input one. This might be school-specific, but it's a pain 2. Lacks the retrieve-autocomplete function the OS X app strongly benefits from. PDFs I send to the app don't seem to enjoy any metadata autocomplete, and dont seemingly sync with their bigger desktop brother (ill be troubleshooting this further) 3. No automate/push capacity for searches, but returns are extremely efficient and thankfully stripped of cloggy/cutesy UI design 4. needs more clarity as to PDF accessibility based on Library.db access. I have both in-app purchases but found I could only actually access the full texts when Iused Bookends Wi-Fi sync. Cloud sync simply didn't work; it populated all of my refs but wouldn't allow access to the attachments, network-unrelated (though this may not end up the case for everyone)
Perfect
Everything I need. I like a mobile version of my biblio. I use bookends on mac and this works perfectly with that. Worth 10$ per annum
Dreadful
Simply doesn’t work for iPad in harmony with Mac version. The instructions for syncing require input of a series of numbers that appear on the app together with a request to select the “Device” from the “Device List” on Bookends Mac version. There is no such device list, no mention of a device list in the user guide or the tutorial. If you want this app to sync with Bookends on your Mac, don’t bother.

Best reference manager
Simple, intuitive, can do almost anything you need it to plus some. Support is great, fast response. Really love this app to the point where I promote it to everyone in need of a reference manager especially those who use or think endnote is good (it’s not).
Not $10 worth of product!
I literally own thousands of apps (yes, I really do) and never, ever, have I had an app before not work because it needed IP verification. They say I need to context Comcast and correct that. LOL! Yeah, right! Design your app better. Deleted app. Besides, there is nothing here worth $10.
Would give 5 stars...
I would give this app 5 stars (and buy the full version) if there were more advance search features or a way to filter the results. Another bonus would be the ability link it to my academic account for Google Scholar and other databases.
