Long time user
Been using Gymaholic for a long time. I like it because it is easy to use and easy to make a custom exercise. I’m 79 I use this app 5-7 days per week. I made exercises for my arthritic hands which helps a lot. I have 10 different weight lifting programs I rotate through. I also have 7 different stretching routines I rotate through. Stretch one day lift weights tomorrow. I’m amazed how much better it is to exercise a lot helps with aches and pains, building strength while getting old. I love this app.
Used to be good
This app sucks now. It was really good until you had to pay an increasingly more expensive subscription for the “same great experience” or whatever. Now, you can’t update weight on super sets, I have to constantly restore purchases to get the premium exercises to show up, and of all things, I pay a subscription for this tripe. Excel will work just fine, and I don’t have to pay a subscription for it.
Turn off the voice?!?
Where is the ability to turn off the voice?
Impossible to evaluate
I can’t see which exercises are included when they all say ‘Premium exercise’.
Heart Rate/HRV reading?
The app used to show live heart rate with a connected monitor. I have a Polar H10 chest strap that I use with the app but it recently stopped working with the app. There’s no setting to connect to heart rate monitors in the app so I don’t know what to do to fix the issue. I’ve already deleted and reinstalled the app, repaired the chest strap, changed the settings in the polar app and nothing fixes the issue. I like my data synced up with my workouts.
Best gym app
I tried many over the years and I always come back to this app. Extremely well built and though out. Work seamlessly with my Apple Watch. Converted many workout enthusiasts friends over the years.
Free version is mimimal
Not enough in the free version
Too many workouts lost/unsaved
Needs work
Zero support
So I have used another workout app for years (Rep Count) that I love but they don’t have Apple Watch integration and I got tired of taking my phone out of my pocket after every set. I purchase a one year subscription to Gymholic and I’m honestly just wishing Rep Count would integrate with the watch. Gymholic tries to do way too much. There are no useful instructions for using it on the watch properly and their support doesn’t answer email. As such, I’m now using Gymholic and taking it out of my pocket after every set thus defeating my entire reason for subscribing. If you don’t have an Apple Watch, give Rep Count a try. The free version is all most people will ever need and it is absolutely simple to use. These guys have a lot of nerve charging $30 for the year and not bothering to respond to multiple inquiries asking for simple instructions.
Long time user, what happened to support?
I’ve been using this app since its inception, years ago. It’s come a long way, and now there’s an iPad app, which is fantastic because it allows you to synchronise workouts and data, making it convenient to program on a laptop (M series or later). Here are a few improvements I’d like to see: - The watch app is not user-friendly. I’d like a way to control it directly from my phone, as well as the ability to add sets and display a countdown timer on the watch. This would be like having a remote control instead of an app that loads workouts, which is quite cumbersome. For a great watch app, check out Heavy. - I’d like to see both *centimetres* and *lbs* as units of measurement. Currently, you can’t select both, which is an easy fix. - The support used to be excellent, but now the developer doesn’t respond to emails. Other users have reported this issue, and I’m curious to know why - maybe a spam filter? I’ll check back for updates to see if I can up the stars :)
Great app, full featured.
Been using it for years, very responsive developer.
Avoid
I can’t add my own workout routine unless I buy a subscription? Seriously? That’s literally the main purpose of the app, isn’t it? Don’t recommend
Great weight lifting app
Been using for years! Easy to add exercises and track reps weights and rest. Please bring back hr on exercise history at bottom.
Big flaw ruins potential great app.
The design and look of this app initially seemed great. However, whilst it has dozens of workouts, there are hardly any gym machines included. This is a major omission, as many people like myself prefer or have to use gym machines. So deleted app and cancelled membership.
Perfect except for…
This app is almost perfect but has one major snag, namely the voice coach which comes switched on as a default setting. Working out how to turn this odious voice off is not straightforward and, worse still, if you’re using the app on your Apple watch with no headphones, the rest of the people in the gym will have to put up with this irritating voice too. And if you’re wearing headphones and listening to music, the final nail in the coffin is that this stupid voice interrupts the music track you’re listening to, and once it’s finished imparting its useless message, the music track doesn’t turn back on automatically. Please, please, please remove this voice coach as a default setting.
Love it
Have been using this for at least 6yrs now. Hasn’t failed me yet and always coming in with great upgrades. Reasonable price too.
Last Update Trashed It
This was a great workout tracker until the most recent update. I’ll probably still use it to plan and track strength training workouts, it’s pretty good at that, but as a workout tracker with data insights, it now stinks. Not every workout I do is through this app. One used to be able to log other workouts in it, along with kcal, duration, heart rate, etc. into the history of this app to ensure tracking stayed consistent and data was complete. Not anymore. Used to be great, I told a lot of people about it. Now I’m looking for something else that does what it did before the update.
Nearly perfect
Gymoholic is an outstanding gym fitness tracker app that combines ease of use with powerful functionality, making it the best fitness tracking app I’ve tried for Apple devices, including the iPhone and Apple Watch. After experimenting with four different fitness apps, Gymoholic stands out as the most user-friendly and effective for tracking workouts and progress. I love it so much that I willingly subscribed, which is a testament to its value. The app’s user experience is excellent, with the UX designers delivering an intuitive and aesthetically pleasing interface. From creating custom workouts to tracking sets, reps, and progress, everything feels seamless and well-thought-out. Features I Love One of the standout features is the audio-guided functionality, which allows me to stay focused without constantly checking my Apple Watch. The audio cues are a game-changer, signaling when rest periods are over and when to transition to the next set or exercise. This feature significantly enhances the overall gym experience and keeps my workouts efficient. Areas for Improvement While Gymoholic is nearly perfect, I have two suggestions for improvement: 1. Audio Guidance Output The audio guidance currently plays through the Apple Watch speakers instead of my connected Bluetooth headphones or other devices. This can be inconvenient, especially in a busy gym environment where I want to keep audio cues discreet. Fixing this issue so that the audio plays through the connected device would greatly enhance this feature. 2. Customizable Auto Hypertrophy Feature The auto hypertrophy feature is fantastic for progressively increasing workout intensity, but it lacks flexibility. At the moment, the weight increment settings apply to every workout indiscriminately. I wish I could customize the frequency of weight increases for specific body parts or exercises. For instance, my current hypertrophy plan involves increasing lower body weights every two weeks and upper body weights every four weeks. Allowing users to adjust the duration for weight progression would make this feature more tailored to individual training programs. Final Thoughts Despite these minor critiques, Gymoholic is an exceptional app that has greatly improved my fitness journey. Its combination of simplicity, functionality, and an excellent user experience makes it well worth the subscription. With a few refinements, it could become even better and cater to more personalized fitness needs. Highly recommend it for anyone serious about tracking their workouts and progress!
Apple Watch Doesn’t Sync
I used to love using this with my Apple Watch. The syncing was quick and simple. Now it’s close to impossible to get workouts to sync. It’s been glitching like this for a few years now. I keep hoping that they fix it with the next update but nothing yet. Judging by other reviews, I’m far from the only one with this issue.
Great app
I’ve used this app for at least 6 years and it’s fantastic. Recently it’s had a decline though. I started having to pay for their premium service that I had been using for many years for free. And now the Apple watch app has started glitching and crashing every time I finish a set. Sad to see
Bodybuilding
Best workout app ever
Leave things alone
There is nothing more frustrating than finding an app you love and then the developers come along and change everything. This was a really nice easy to use app until the last iteration. Now it doesn’t work like it used to, it is not simple and I am forced to yet again find another workout app That will work the way I want it to and the developers will leave it alone. Update: after the new update was done it no longer sinks to the iCloud either. I wish they would’ve just left this app alone.
Almost a five
I like it. Workouts are automatically recorded. However, I wish it had more workout moves to choose from. If they did I would give it a fiver
What happened?
The new update makes it hard to do on the fly edits to your rest times and exercise order. It now shows a detail of the exercise on the first press which after having such a good app that allowed you to record your exercise first it went to a beginner like app where it keeps the exercises to the order set up beforehand. It might be a good app for people who have time to plan their trips to the gyms or have the same set up everyday because of equipment access. But this app used to be my go to and the only thing I wanted was a floating stop/go for the exercises so when you’re changing up your routine you can pause whenever instead of scrolling all the way to the top. This was a good app for my lifestyle
Strava integration stopped working after iOS 18 update
Strava integration stopped working after iOS 18 update
Simply The Best Workout App.
6+ Years
Update is awful
With the update that took out the ability to quickly change the timer between sets. AWFUL!
Good app but have to restore purchase every month
I like the app but I have to restore the purchase every month even though I have auto update on. That got annoying.
Great, but annoying bugs not fixed for years
I reported some bugs to the dev years ago and they acknowledged it. Time goes by, new releases get all the new marketable features, but minor yet super annoying issues are still here. If you travel between the US and the rest of the world, your weights will not get actually converted when you switch the units back and forth: the numbers stay the same, only the units name change. This used to work fine before, but stopped at some point years ago. I am now permanently in Europe and have to calculate all my weighs from kgs each session to input them in lbs the app. There used to be an export function which allowed to download the data, which I could use to recalculate myself and reimport the weighs, but that is gone now with iCloud sync, which is a significant regression on its own. The other bug is with Apple Watch: if you have a Quick Menu configured to show next set and edit previous, it will NOT let you edit previous set if it was the last one in workout. You have to finish the workout and edit that last set by hand. I progress with each workout (Hepburn Method), so I have to do it each time. These aren’t big deals to be fixed, but somehow after 4 years or so they’re still here. I even inquired about them again just a month or two ago and got no response whatsoever.
Great but not fully compatible with Apple Health
Weight and BF% does not automatically update in app from Apple Health data, and also does not fetch waist circumference for some reason. Also you must select between imperial or metric for all units, you can’t say choose lbs for weights and cm for measurements. I’ve also tried switching between metric and imperial to record my measurements in the unit of my choice but it does not convert. Please fix this!
Best.
Been using this app for years… Simply the best. I’ve never found anything comparable.
No Pay Once Option
Tried the subscription. Make it 1 time pay and I’ll use again. $40 PER YEAR IS A RIP OFF. Try the OTHER APPS FOR A 1 Time pay instead
Love it but…
Love this app except that the avatar on the Home Screen is about 40 lbs heavier than I am. Sent numerous emails but no response. Little disheartening every time I open it.
Not Syncing Exercise Groups
Incredible amount of work went into designing this app for providing a helpful tool to maintain an organized workout plan. Unfortunately, the synchronization process seems to not include the Exercise Groups. Customer support told me they would fix it months ago and it's still not working. Bums me out I can't use the app for what I'm paying for.
Great….except won’t back up
As it won’t backup to iCloud, it won’t sync with apple health like it should. My life insurance tracks workouts via apple health, the more workout, the more points, the less my insurance goes up each year, so this is a critical function for me and so massively reduces the point of this app if it can’t sync to apple health a workout not just exercise minutes. Wish I hadn’t paid for it now.
Best overall weight training app on the planet!
I have downloaded at least 10 lifting apps in the past 3 years, and Gymaholic is by far the easiest to use, easiest to adjust to whatever type of program you’re running (Powerlifting, Bodybuilding, functional, etc). The premium features are way worth the price (which if you compare to Fitbit, Strava, Wahoo, Gymkeeper, GreySkull, or Stronglifts 5x5 it’s cheaper!!!). This app has a boatload of exercises pre-loaded, but if you want to add one that’s not on the list, it’s a piece of cake. You can even snap a picture of the exercise from the internet and add it to exercise description!!! I haven’t seen anything like it! You can adjust rest times on the fly, be notified when rest time is over, it’s fantastic! The augmented reality feature is wicked cool, because it will tell you when each muscle group is ready to rock again after self-adjusted or recommended rest days! I will never use another app!
Sync across Apple Watch, iPad, iPhone
I used to love the app, but the syncing no longer works to the Apple Watch. Right now, the watch will not sync and there are no instructions on the developers site. Hoping they will respond. I have followed the in app instructions…but I think they are old and don’t apply to new IOS. This was a really good feature before it failed. They have not kept this app up to date. It’s too bad as the iPhone and iPad app has great workouts and really nice to record workouts. Needs to sync with WATCH!!!!!
Great tracking app - more workouts please!
I love this app. I’m on premium and I think it is a very fair price for the added functionality. Love the Apple Watch integration and it makes going to the gym super easy now as I don’t have to think about what to do, just do it. My only request - when I got premium I was hoping for more female workouts, but there isn’t a huge amount of choice. Would be great to have a larger workout plan database, or workout sharing from other users (if they are willing)? Right now I’m pulling workout plans from online and creating my own plan in the app, which works, but would love to have more choice within the app.
It doesn’t save workouts; developer doesn’t answer
It doesn’t save half of the workouts started from the Watch. I wrote to the developer about this and had no answer
Good for the gym. Not so good for at home
Some really good workouts for gym sessions but in the current lockdown situation, they need to add more workouts for floor and resistance bands.
Once again my favorite app
Loved this app before. Love it even more now with the “smart” or the ai addition.
No loyalty
Have had this app for years 7 years have spent plenty of money on upgrades today I get on and everything is locked wants me to buy premium. Have told probably 20 friends to get this app. Trash nickel and dime company. On to the next one. Shame on this company
Pretty great
It’s not entirely user friendly, you can end up temporarily skipping sets by mistake, but notwithstanding these little things, it’s a great app for recording your progress as you train
Gone wrong
Used to love this app and recommend to others. But after a recent update the app erased all my saved workouts, and the timing between sets is not working any longer.
Used to be great increasingly flaky watch app undoes this
Used to be amazing but watch app now barely works - animated mode is too buggy to use. Only way to end exercises now is to reboot watch and record workouts manually. Pity this has been amazing for 1.5 years but now unusable on watch.
Great app!
I appreciate developers who are active and always looking for ways to improve their apps. But if you need a plate calculator to tell you how much weights on the bar, you’re probably unsafe around free weights! Stick to machines, where you won’t hurt yourself or others!
Bugs and lacks basic features
I’ve been using this app for many years now. This may be a minor thing to some but the fact that I can’t re-arrange my sets in an exercise is a big miss. I am constantly at the gym, putting in numbers, copying sets, because I can’t just drag a set and move it to a different position. Basic functionality that simply MUST be added. Also, don’t get me started on the fact that every month I have to click on “restore purchase” because for some reason the app forgets that I’m a paying member. The fact that most of the negative reviews are about that bug yet it STILL hasn’t been fixed is ridiculous and tells you how much the developer actually cares. Images that I had taken of exercises before - all gone. Sometimes entire logs go missing. Just like that. Gone. Took me years to figure out the timer thing. I even had to email the developer. Even then, still couldn’t get it to properly work. The timer would randomly go off in the middle of me doing a set and I would have to stop working out to stop it. Insane!! The fact that I can’t re-arrange notes…. And that notes are limited to just under 30 characters… I mean what is that? 2004??? Are you kidding me??? I can keep going but won’t waste my time with this. Fix your app!
Excellent app
This is great, allows you to set your own exercises
No update in 6 months!?
I’d be willing to subscribe to access the additional features, but makes no sense to spend the money if the developers are not willing to improve the app in over 6 months.
Who
Really good app worth it to download
