iPhone update!!!
It’s like an audio angel came down from heaven, and said “Your wish is my command!” Now on iPhone! This developer has blown away every portable iOS app on the planet.
It’s ok but !!!!!!
To get the full benefit of this app you have to purchase the 2 other groove boxes as the demo’s tracks showcase which this would excel so disappointed that they did not come or even heavily discounted or your paying more along the lines of £60 which its not worth that
Good
Good app but has sound issues on my iPad Pro m4 Auv3 plugins cause clicking built in sounds are fine it’s when you use plugins effect or instrument.
Bien Mais
Brilliant instrument, but the modulation architecture needs work
I’m genuinely very impressed with Groove Rider 2. It is one of the few iPad music apps that really feels like an instrument rather than a DAW squeezed onto a touchscreen. The workflow, clip system, sound design, sequencing and overall philosophy make a lot of sense to me. I can understand the developer’s way of thinking, and that makes GR-2 very enjoyable to learn. I keep discovering new things, and I can already see myself using it for a long time. However, the deeper I get into the synth engine, the more one particular design choice bothers me: the modulation/envelope architecture. GR-2 has an ADSR envelope per layer, but the same envelope is used for amplitude, filter modulation and other destinations. For me, a much more fundamental synth architecture would be: * one dedicated AMP envelope * one dedicated FILTER envelope * at least one freely assignable LFO/envelope The problem with sharing one envelope becomes very obvious when designing sounds. The amp and filter often need completely different envelope shapes. For example, I might want a short amp decay but a much longer filter decay. With one shared ADSR, I can’t do that properly. The LFO doesn’t really solve the problem either. If it had a proper one-shot mode, it could at least be used as a simple envelope-like modulation source. But because it remains cyclic, that isn’t really an alternative. There is another issue with modulation polarity. Pan naturally wants bipolar modulation: left → centre → right. Filter cutoff, however, normally wants unipolar modulation: closed → open, without the modulation going into an unwanted negative range. Having to choose between bipolar and unipolar behaviour therefore creates an awkward compromise: bipolar works nicely for pan but not for cutoff, while unipolar works for cutoff but causes pan to remain on one side rather than moving naturally around the centre. Ideally, modulation polarity/range should be handled per destination, with appropriate scaling/offset. I’ve also looked for an AUv3 equivalent of Logic Pro for iPad’s Modulator — something that simply gives me an LFO and envelope that I can freely assign to parameters. There are AUv3 MIDI modulation apps, but I haven’t found a simple solution that gives the same straightforward workflow with GR-2. Routing MIDI CCs through another app is possible in theory, but it quickly becomes much more complicated than the problem should require. Of course, I can draw automation instead. But that feels like working around the instrument rather than using it. I’m manually drawing modulation that a dedicated envelope or LFO should be generating for me. This is not a request for dozens of extra features. For me, the missing pieces are actually very basic synth architecture: a separate filter envelope, a separate amp envelope, and one genuinely flexible modulation source. And that’s why it’s frustrating: almost everything else about GR-2 is so well designed. It feels coherent, immediate and musical. This is the one area where, the deeper I get into it, the more I find myself wondering why it was designed this way. I still love GR-2 and will continue using it. But if the modulation system were expanded in this direction, it would make an already excellent instrument considerably more powerful and much more satisfying for sound design.
🫶🏼🫶🏼
Please bring the 4x4 layout to iPhone — it makes perfect sense to have it there where the screen is way better in portrait mode than landscape…. 🫶🏼😭
Awesome.. but
I really love this. There are a few things I’d love to see added if possible. A 2nd LFO and with attack/release time Sample editor with fine pitch adjustment. Drag & drop samples on to pads. midi learn page like drambo. Midi learn for Part select back and forward? Can't midi learn 16 samples to the 16 key pads as C3/C4 etc is there twice bottom left & top right 🙏
Midi automation needed
Let us have the fully editable midi automation. It only lets you edit what you can record. We need the whole available CC list.
Great iphone version!
The iphone version works great, even on a small screen! Thank you for another great groovebox!
Great App
Great great app, if you could please fix the one shot an other functions on the sampler
looks amazing but don’t know…
This looks amazing just like Reason studios did back in the days of 2001, but this groovebox looks to complicated, how do you use it and I’m not a beginner as I’ve used music production software for years and decades now and this still baffles me.. Any good tutorials on this.. cheers..
NO BRAINER
This is what the sequencer part of Korg Gadget could have been. I’ve been using IOS apps for music nearly ten years now. I don’t usually feel compelled to write a review because I’m not usually that impressed. But this app is really really great. The groove box mentality is too much fun and easy to get building tracks on the fly. The features have been really well thought out and everything I would want is there - probability triggers, conditional triggers, step sequencing, automation, AU integration, resampling. Honestly it’s incredibly fun and I will be using it for years to come. I hope this app has a long life and I would be happy with it as is especially for the price - even if the dev doesn’t add any more features. Audio tracks would be nice but not a deal breaker for me. This is a groovebox afterall.
Love the app
4 stars only because I wish it would support all Auv3 apps which can be fixed over time I hope
Pre order at 29.99 Payed 35.00 good job
I thought 30 Euros was too much, 35 honestly annoys me, for the amount paid I was hoping for something I hadn't seen yet.
A thing of beauty
Updated: Changed review to five stars - you can now add auv3 effects per track. This is just a beautifully designed app - a must for anyone even curious about making music on their iPad **** Another brilliant app from this developer, one that pushes the original groovebox concept into full DAW territory. I absolutely love the ability to record a few clips, launch them in different combinations, and save that performance onto a song timeline for further tweaking. A very satisfying workflow and a pleasure to interact with/look at too.
Merci
Groovebox Idealized
If you make music on a high performance iOS device, this is a must-get.
Need to improve the sequencer
This app is great for getting a song going. The addition of AUv3 is awesome. Lots to like. BUT- the sequencer is not fun to use. Even step sequencing drums is a bummer. Should be able to press a keyboard note and enter it into the step sequencer. Parameter locks per step would be great too. Hoping this gets addressed in future updates.
So awesome!
What an amazing app! So much fun and deeeeep!
Very good
This has the best workflow out of all the DAW’s I have, it’s so fast and fluid to navigate and the piano roll is really nice to use. I just wish there was a way to have more insert AUv3 FX. I have much more fx than synths and when you put a reverb on one bus that only leaves one more free for another fx.
Wonderful app but…
I’m an aspiring composer/producer who is finding this app to be a game-changer. More immediate and accessible than a full DAW. Best groove box type of app I’ve tried. Edit: Bumping this to 5 stars, as the developer provided an alternative support channel in addition to Facebook (see below), which was my only complaint. The developer also acknowledged my minor bug report.
Review
Wrote review draft. Not sure where it went.
Great app
Great job on this one! The only thing I feel this app is missing is a note repeat for live play! If you added that this would be my #1 go to for iOS !
