Delightful to use
Ivory is a great Mastodon client. Super easy to use, smooth scrolling of your timeline, easy to follow threads.
Deceptive
It is not free and one of the quotes on the website said: ”If you use Mastodon on a Mac, you’re nuts if you don’t try Ivory.“ This is very deceptive and just a way to earn money out of your users. I would be fine if it was a one-time payment, but get off the App Store. You’re nothing but a nuisance to free users.
Very good; point off for lack of Markdown
Lovely experience, but I have to jump into a rival app to check my Markdown's displaying correctly. Still use this, though.
Good luck figuring it out—there’s no instruction manual!
Honestly, Ice Cubes is free and is nearly identical and functionality to Ivory. If I’m actually paying for an app, then I expect it to have good documentation. All their site has some bare minimum FAQs. There are certain things in the app that I just don’t understand and wonder what they do, but there’s no place to look it up. I definitely won’t be renewing my subscription. I might even switch back to Ice Cubes in the meantime. They say you can write them and ask for help but like that takes time. Why can’t they just have a website so I can look it up if I have a question. Do they really want to be bombarded with emails and go back-and-forth with customer support forever?
Feed refreshes while scrolling.
The Achilles heel of this app is how the feed will refresh while in the middle of scrolling. More often than not I’ll be scrolling, reading a post or about to click on a post and the feed will auto refresh and jump to the beginning rendering the post I was interested in lost to the ether. It’s by far the most frustrating aspect of this app and it impacts the user experience in a very negative way. If this were fixed it would be a much better app.
Best client for best platform
I love Ivory
Great example of why subscriptions aren’t always better for consumers
What do they expect, for us to just keep paying for the subscription while not getting any substantial updates. They’ve made so much money off of this app now for not putting much work into it. If I had this level of output at my job, I would be fired. My boss wouldn’t just be like oh yeah that’s fine. Take another year to rest. I would be out and looking for a new job.
Very beautiful app missing key (for me) features
Gorgeous interface, robust settings. I just cannot live without threaded conversation view; I cannot follow conversations properly without it. The other feature I missed from a different app I’ve used was a dedicated tab for private messages (a kind of inbox). I like being able to view those separately from other mentions. These two things are very important to me so I ended up going back to my old app, despite the fact it’s a bit glitchy with the timeline fetch right now.
Gave up
The app is good and polished and a great option for most folks. However, I’m a musician, and I follow other musicians. Musicians sometimes attach audio clips to posts, which is a standard Mastodon feature. Ivory, in the years it’s been available, has never prioritized this feature. I switched apps in 2025, and there are other good options out there that support all of Mastodon’s features. So, sadly, this one just isn’t for me because the devs haven’t made customers like me a priority.
It’s Alright
Decent Mastodon app, but recently updated it to remove a user setting around boosting posts and seems to be refusing to respect user preference around it, instead citing a desire to remain consistent with the Mastodon app. That’s really disappointing because it’s breaking the usability for power users, and I would rather just use the Mastodon app itself if Ivory isn’t going to provide a significant benefit over traditional experience.
Lovely
I wish it wasn’t a subscription but this is genuinely a beautiful app
Requires a subscription to do anything
Requires an ongoing subscription of which none appears to go to your server. Just rent seeking behaviour
Simply The Best
this is the best social media client ever devised on any platform ever and they don’t say that lately. Great care has been taken in every corner of this product.
No updates
This app hasn’t been updated for over six months. That really isn’t acceptable for a paid app that is far from perfect. I suggest switching to the free Mastodon app which receives regular and useful updates.
Works Fine. Missing Features. Maybe abandoned
It was way better than the default Mastodon app early on. It’s missing more useful features like muting threads, or even just not showing entire threads split out on the timeline. No updates for 7 months after regular patches.
Fantastic, but
I love the app, it is fantastic and well worth the money. However, I would like to regain the option to boost with a single press.
Crashes constantly
I tried this out about a year ago and preferred it over the other apps I was using but Everytime I went to type something in the search bar, or really use my keyboard at all, it would crash. Fast forward to now I decided to give it another try. I even subscribed for a full year and it still crashes every time I use my keyboard to type something in. I’m using an iPhone 11 but it’s up to date on firmware.
Great App with a few Caviats
Filters seem to be hit & miss. Not immediately apparent someone has replied to a post and the replies are buried under a menu with an ambiguous name (unless I am missing something).
Too little
First off, I think the app is nice. But the limitations are a bit odd. I’d be happy to subscribe to support devs but when you see the free version lacking basic things, pushing you to a paid plan it makes me a bit bitter. You can’t post or have multiple accounts unless you pay. Considering the mastodon app lets you do this, it’s weird why this restriction is even here. I’d expect to pay for more advance features but here we’re talking the basics.
Not sure what’s happened to this app
The search function no longer works. I cannot search on any of my accounts even by # while I can search on other applications that are linked to mastodon. In addition, Federated no longer works on any of my accounts. While Federated can be overwhelming, at times, I would still like the access in an app that I’m paying for to be able to view Federated. Being able to view Federated And even more importantly, being able to search (even if it were limited to the same instance are important). Thank you.
The essential Mastodon client
If you use Mastodon, just buy it. It's the best. Don't waste your time with anything else.
Not worth a subscription
I’m a big fan of this developer. I have used many of their products for in the past and currently. I was very excited to see that they make a Mastodon product. That excitement quickly turned into disappointment. I don’t want to pay a reoccurring subscription for an app like this. Either give me the option to buy it outright or just forget about it. Especially when you have multiple options available that are 100% free and just as good.
Great app!
This is the best Mastodon client I’ve used thus far! Some minor details here and there that could be fixed (tapping on your profile image in the upper left, the “setting” interior of the fly out menu can be scrolled and breaks pretty easily). My top issue right now is lack of progress bar when posting videos. You hit “post”, the message composer screen immediately closes, but there’s no visual indication that an upload is happening in the background until potentially minutes later when the confirmation toast finally appears. Thanks to the team for the hard work on this lovely app as always!!
Mastodon without filters isn’t Mastodon
Ivory is a well-thought-out and very performant app, but when you add a filter in the app, it really only applies to the app. Ivory will respect the filters from Mastodon — probably because those filters get applied before Ivory sees any data — but you can’t edit or add to your existing official filters at all. Since this filtering capability is a crucial feature on Mastodon, the omission is significant and glaring. They say they will integrate “in the future” but maybe they should have spent the time they used building a parallel feature to use the one already there.
Has Ivory been abandoned?
This app used to be the benchmark app for accessing Mastodon. Now it feels buggy and more frustrating to use. Timelines bounce around unpredictably and I’m constantly clearing the cache just to get the app usable. I’ve cancelled my subscription and switched to IceCubes which is much less frustrating to use.
Great app that keeps getting better
I use it every day.
Worse than Mona
I recently tried Ivory again after trying it last year. Unfortunately, it's still quite primitive, especially compared to Mona. I canceled my subscription trial after an hour. It appears that Tapbots doesn't care about the Mac anymore, which is truly sad, because Tweetbot for Mac was a good app. Instead we get a crappy iPad port on Mac, with all of the bugs and limitations of Catalyst. Mona is Catalyst too, but Mona is a lot more configurable, and at least it isn't a rental (subscription). And at least you can resize Mona's Setting window, so that isn't a limitation of Catalyst, just poor design by Ivory.
Great Mastodon app with a frustrating design flaw
I really liked Tweetbot so I was very happy the Tapbots team made an app for Mastodon. It’s my favorite Mastodon app, it works well and has all the features I expect. Better than the official apps even. BUT, it insists on showing a background color when viewing photos instead of black, totally ruins the photo viewing experience! So many other settings can be tweaked, but not this? Baffling design decision.
Too Buggy for the Price
There is a lot to like about Ivory, but I cannot recommend it. More than a year ago, I reported a bug to the devs: Native Mastodon filters are ignored when viewing lists. This is *still* not fixed & it’s really not acceptable for an app that charges a premium subscription price just to use it. Additionally, it’s still missing basic features found in other Mastodon apps that are free or offer a one time purchase (e.g., grouped notifications).
Lost from home
It’s extremely frustrating to try and get to the top of the timeline. I get bounced back and forth between old and new posts until I finally click the Home button a bunch of times in a row.
Great stuff!
Everything from Tapbots is lovely and Ivory is no exception. It’s one of my most used apps and I am happy to be a subscriber.
iOS 18 Dark Mode
App icon doesn’t support Dark Mode Home Screens which it should do by default if it wants to match all my other Apple and third party apps
Ivory is the best iOS Mastodon app. Period.
I have tried others. This isn't me glomming on the first app I found. The user experience is very intuitive, even for things like reading alt-text, and translating posts. (A quick aside, if someone boosted a post in another language, they have read it and want you to, too. Take the extra few seconds to translate it.) You can choose the icon you want to use for the app. There's one that goes especially well with my wallpaper. The /only/ downside is that it takes extra steps to translate foreign alt-text. I'm sure there's some way that Ivory could add that functionality, but there's probably a trick that needs to discovered.
Read only without a trial
I wouldn’t mind as much if the app was upfront about it before download. It feels like a bait and switch.
Average
It does the job. There isn’t any appearance customization that I could find. There isn’t actually much customization at all.
Design and usability
Nothing beats these two thing. Of course it’s worth the fee. Tatbots customer since Tweetbot first came out.
Much more than tweet bot early and it’s not like it’s twitter
This is much more than I paid for tweet bot a year and mastodon is even close to full scale yet. Plus I accidentally subbed this year and ask for a refund and not luck.
Pleasant app
Does most of what i want. It does seem a little reticent to update if i have not opened it for a while: hitting the home button will take me to the top of my feed, but then pulling down to refresh will show me many more posts. Then i can pull down to refresh a second or even a third time, and it will find hundreds more new posts each time. Can you make it so double tapping the home button does a complete refresh, and gets all the new posts, instead of just some of them?
Sounds are so bad.
The sounds are annoying and just too loud! Please give me a way to change them!
Almost the perfect Mastodon app
Sadly, I am not going to renew my subscription to Ivory this year. Of the apps I’ve tried it gets the closest to what my ideal Mastodon app would be: boosting posts across different accounts; smooth scrolling and a generally excellent timeline UI; improvements on the web interface for interacting across instances. BUT it is missing two important features that detract from the experience: grouped notifications and threaded responses. The former is part of the Masodon core so why they haven’t implemented it is odd; the latter can be done because other apps have figured it out—following thread responses is messy in Ivory. It hasn’t been updated in a while, and those were just small updates, so maybe Tapbots realized there isn’t that much money to be made in Mastodon development. If this changes I’d probably come back.
Best. Mastodon. Client.
If you enjoyed using Tweetbot, then you’ll enjoy using Ivory even more. I’ve tried many Mastodon clients since joining in November 2022, and this is by far my favorite. Yes, I’m biased because I was a longtime Tweebot user and Ivory feels like home. The app is good in its own right. The interface is nice looking and easy to use. There aren’t an over abundance of options to overwhelm you. It’s well worth the money if you frequently use Mastodon.
Subscription - stay away
The proliferation of subscriptions to simple apps is a scourge. I hardly use my iPad, but when I do, I’d like to browse some social media. If I could buy the app, then I totally would, but subscriptions are just a cynical trap for the lazy.
Suggestion
Having been a long-time user of Tweetbot, I was not surprised to find a highly polished app that reduces the native UI friction. Like to see a block option though.
Going downhill
Like the way the update displays alt text. Hate, absolutely HATE they have done away with the media animations upon closing. That one little fun thing is why I kept coming back to Ivory. Now that it is gone...SO AM I. Really bad move.
Good app but why are audio media files still unsupported?
Generally pretty good, not much additional functionality beyond what Tweetbot did ported to Mastodon, but that’s good in itself. Still, one really egregious absence - and the reason for the 3 stars rather than 4 or 5 - is support for embedded audio files. They just show up as grey blocks, not even any indication what type of content is missing. I just got notified it’s time for a third subscription payment, so I’m pretty sure this has been missing for at the very least 2 years since the app launched. This doesn’t really seem like an unreasonable thing to expect as petty much table stakes for a social media app. Even just a sign that “this is audio and we don’t support it yet” would be better than just a grey square. Any clues when this is going to be implemented? Thanks!
A Superb Mastodon App
Ivory is hands down the best Mastodon client for iOS. IMHO.
Doesn't support non-Mastodon instances
The timeline on Akkoma instances is empty whilst the timeline on GotoSocial instances is all the same post. Pretty poor showing given many other apps manage this correctly. Cancelled my subscription for now. Will come back and re-review if they fix the non-Mastodon problems.
Mastodon-only
Great client, I’ve always loved Tapbots designs. But Ivory obstinately refuses to recognize servers that aren’t the Mastodon codebase, even though other clients work perfectly well with them. This is fine for the vast majority of users, but I’ve sadly had to cancel my subscription.
Too pricey, free version is just a useless demo
Look, I feel sorry that Tweetbot suffered. However, you can't charge this much especially for a service which is just barely getting off the ground - it's unrealistic and a bad pricing model. From all the people I follow on Twitter, only 2 are on Mastodon (and one of those is a refowarding bot). So, rather than trying to attract more users and encouraging early adopters, Tapbots is doing the exact opposite by penalizing early adopters, charging a huge premium, all with hopes to recoup their Tweetbot losses. Great coders, but maybe not so great on the business savy.
Great, but missing one critical feature
If one feature were added, I would re-subscribe. "short right swipe" should have an option to "outdent", "de-focus", not sure what to call it. When you tap a single toot, it focuses that message, and you see replies to that message. I want to be able to swipe right to go out a level, and undo the focus that I did when I tapped the toot. Bluesky has this, the old twitter app had (probably has) this. It sounds nit-picky, but I unsubscribed because I can't stand not having this.
