Unreliable on macOS
Astrill repeatedly leaves my Mac’s DNS/network in a broken state after disconnecting, sometimes even making normal internet access stop working🙄I had to use a separate recovery script just to restore my connection. After months of dealing with this, I finally gave up and uninstalled it 🌶︎🐔

Lots of options; works in China, though you may need to restart it to make some changes.

It’s impossible to find a link that works. In the beginning it worked. But after like a week it stopped working. And I pay for five devices to work but can’t get one connected

I’ve had to contact ASTRILL on 2 occasions for help. I was not able to connect to the Internet. On one occasion it was an hour and a half. The other was 45 mins. Spent and was refereed to a Senior analyst for assistance. I ended up fixing it myself. I am not a computer person. To be very honest, if Surfshark did not fail me in China I would be using them. They were very capable in Assisting me when I had problems.

There is no ping test and speed test, as in the Mac version of the app. So it is hard to tell which server is available. It is sometimes very frustrating not be able to find one working. And the server list is different between the Mac and the iOS version

I’m in China, so I need a VPN all the time. When Astrill works, it works. When it doesn’t, it doesn’t. No recognizable pattern to when it will or won’t.

THE vpn for China
Pretty much the only VPN that works consistently in China. The UI is extremely simple but don’t be fooled by that. It can have inconsistencies but oh well, such is life in using a VPN in China. 4 stars because the price is really expensive, 30 USD per month and more if you want the VIP package.
No longer good
Astrill used to work well in China but barely functions anymore. The app also used to give you up to date server speeds for all of the locations but they removed that feature, so know you have to endlessly try different locations in hopes that one will actually work. Find a better one.

Lost a Loyal Customer
I have been using Astrill for over three years, living in China. It was time for my renewal last week, so I took the leap and ordered the 2 year package. It was expensive—around $300usd. Almost immediately after renewing, my service dropped completely. I can’t access Google, Instagram, YouTube, etc. It really seems like they just took my money and ran away. Now I’m on the hunt for a different VPN that will actually provide service, hopefully for a cheaper price. Now I’m out $300.

Astrill VPN is a very useful VPN to use in countries like China where there are a lot of restrictions. The User Interface may look old, but it is still a very effective VPN. I would recommend people to use it.

I purchased Astrill VPN Client for use in China, for a two week vacation. The first time I connected everything seemed to go fine but then it only stayed connected for a minute or so, so I tried it a couple more times, having short connections and then none. That was what started 10 days of emails back and forth with Astrill with them sending me all sorts of “try this” cheat codes and hacks, different ways to login, resets, etc. etc. that by day 10 had amounted to over 30 email exchanges, and only a couple very short logons. On Day 11 they offered online support, which, if I had known existed, I would have asked for at the beginning. However, they sent a link for the wrong platform so I had to wait another day, and by now I was in the final 2 days of my vacation and they were wanting me to get online to troubleshoot. It was too little too late. Had they let me know 10 days earlier everything probably would’ve been great. But as it is, I would warn against Astrill VPN in China, and know that their customer support is polite, but almost completely ineffective.
VPN for China
This review is China specific. I’ll say the app feels a bit clunky in terms of customization and it is slow, especially not connected to WiFi. However, of the three VPN’s I bought, this is the only one that works consistently. I’d be happier if the price wasn’t so high.
App in iPhone doesn’t work well.
Overheating phone, in Samsung it works well, but in iPhone not.
The service is good, the app is not
This VPN consistently works for me, even in more challenging countries. Whenever I have issues it’s related to the app, not the service. There is no options to choose the protocol in the app just TCP or UDP. On the desktop app and in many other VPN’s apps you can choose your protocol OpenVPN Stealth etc. It also seems to randomly error or logout, then I need to login again. They update this app to keep it functional, but it really hasn’t received any updates beyond that in years.

Did not work at all
Fortunately NordVPN worked fine, so that I could keep up with work, etc. I used a foreign data plan, and had everything set up before we went to China, but this seems to be a very slow product outside of China, and non-functional inside of it.
Still struggling in China…
Especially on iPad / iPhone. Problem is I’m yet to find a better alternative, so the frustration continues

Great … except for the iphone!
On the computer and iPad I find Astrill awesome. On the iPhone it sucks. It has few options to control, goes grey a couple of times a week and spins for a loooooong time and will not quit or start. It fails to connect and disconnects frequently. It also reports I’m exceeding the number of devices allowed … when I’m not - and this is only in the phone. This is despite working with support on these matters (which is very good in replying). The iphone app really needs an update!
Best option from china
Been using it steady for almost 4 years now. Tried all the others and private build options. If you’re in china don’t waste your time trying others. You get what you pay for.
Terrible product, terrible service
I have been using VPNs for 20 years and this by far the worse. Good luck getting any reliable connections and they refuse any refunds no matter how much trouble you have with it, so be warned.
No App for Apple TV
I have been waiting a year for an App to work in Apple TV, they still haven’t made

Astrill used to offer multiple protocols and a server speed test but now it’s down for to TCP or UDP. Connections are hit and miss and speed throughput is very limited. I won’t be renewing

Im in china currently (the time in writing this ) and it work amazingly the first 2 weeks but now its only showing me the country Germany hanulu its irratating so if you looking for a vpn this is a “ok” choice

Don’t be fooled by the old style UI, this app is simple and works perfectly. The only vpn I’ve used that works on WiFi networks in China.

Hit or miss with connections sometimes.. it maybe the country, but I do get frustrated having to find different locations to make it work. I wish there was a preferential rating system of best connections given your location.. thanks
AppleTV OS When?
I love Astrill. Been using since 2015! But when will Astrill be available for AppleTV OS? Really need it!!!
Great service, terrible app
This VPN works when others don’t and is a great VPN service. However, the app is clunky, outdated, and lacks features (eg speed test) and settings (eg site filtering) that the desktop app has. Additionally, the VPN regularly gets “stuck” on and can’t be turned off either in the app or the iOS VPN screen. The only way to get it off when this happens is to turn off data and WiFi, then it’ll give an error that turns the VPN off. Given how expensive the VPN service is, I expect a better app.
There is no trial account, but the app works very well
Although the app says there is a seven day trial, this is not the case. It will not work unless you pay for a subscription. Also, if it thinks you’re in the trial period, it doesn’t give you the option to subscribe. However, if you contact support they will send you an invoice and connect you instantly on receipt of payment and the app works seamlessly, even in China. None of the other popular VPNs is working at the moment, but this one does.
Rubbish UI/UX, Expensive App
For what it costs, this App offers poor value for money. The developer clearly has no interest in continually improving the product, but cashing in. This is quite sad and usually means the company’s days left on this earth are numbered. I genuinely hope they can start to hear user feedback and make enhancements. Otherwise, we’ll just shop elsewhere!
Service issues
It does work in China usually although I had issues getting it to work on my laptop. I sent 4 requests for help over a one week period which were not responded to, which I felt for the very high monthly fee they are charging, wasn’t acceptable at all. Astrill worked better on iOS devices in my experience. The interface is not so great as is the pricing but if you really need a vpn that works in the PRC, then it’s an option. Very few others work now although I have found a far cheaper and more versatile vpn now.

It works so poorly in China, the connection is always unstable, and the UI is like from some app 30 years ago; doesn’t have auto connect features, also couldn’t test speed on your phone, it sucks so much; and they have no refund policy at all!!! I think that says a lot!!

It works really great in China, fast and discreetly connectivity and stability. Compatible for multiple devices and system. But the speed is not ideal for downloading or watching 2K YouTube video.
Can't even upgrade in the App Store
Keep saying my application version is too old, but can't upgrade in the app store. How stupid?
Works okay but needs an update
Works in China to bypass the Great Firewall, however the app hasn’t been update in 2 years. Several other VPNs have nicer interfaces and more functionality… for example, Astrill needs to add split-tunnelling, as local apps don’t work well when the vpn is turned on. Plus, the app itself has a mind of its own… I turn it off, and it turns itself back on within a few seconds.
