Definitive car magazine, adequate app
Car is one of the oldest and the highest quality English language car magazines in the world, with storied columnists, fantastic features and insightful inside news from the industry. The 5* review is for the content. The digital experience is just good enough not to betray the overall brand. Which, to be fair, is a reasonably high standard.
Disappointing
Despite paying for a trial subscription, I cannot access or view the digital magazine or even see my account details. Very poor!
Disappointed
A I subscribed to this for a few years, after buying occasional copies on line after many years of print copy. Unfortunately the App is slow and clunky at best and at worst answer it is now, I am currently logged out ? Tried logging back on, but it doesn’t recognise my e Mail? Despite that it has taken £34.99 from me over the past few years?…. I have now and reluctantly cancelled my subscription.
Spectacularly awful app
The login process is ridiculously onerous: credentials are lost each time I login; requesting to reset my password results in the necessary email not being sent; forcing the user to share login credentials is against GDPR and is therefore illegal. Older magazines from when Car truly was great are not included in the archive, Using your review criteria from the back of the magazine - the app is ‘ugly’. Very disappointed.
Glitchy like my Polestar software
Really needs to stop forgetting my password and making me log in every time I use it. No other App I use does this.
For many years Best motoring magazine
I havei have been reading Car since the 1970’s and it has the best journalism and photography in my opinionI read the paper edition of Car for many years. The iPad editio adds I have read Car on and off since 1975 and it is still the best.extra interactivity and is so convenient. It is the best motoring magazine by a long way. The quality of the journalism is good, and the photography second to none.
Cannot read the magazines denied access

Too many typos
Would have been 5 stars but for too many typos and link errors.
Is there any life at app support?
I have been happily catching up on issues after a few months away, until last Thursday when suddenly it stopped working. I emailed to ask you to look into it and had no reply. I emailed again on Friday requesting an update. It’s now Monday and nothing. I still have no access and now cannot even get to the login screen. I have been using the app for several years now and have never had any problems before. Please help so I can enjoy CAR again!
Problem with App
Great magazine that I’ve subscribed to for over 30 years, however the latest update on the App now means I cannot use it on my IPad Mini 2 as the IOS is not compatible. Shame, as I have no other way of reading it. Contacted the magazine but no response.
No Archive
Fantastic magazine, I’ve been reading Car for well over 30-yrs. The new app looks good, but the archive only seems to go back to 2020 whereas before it was 2012 onwards. It would be nice to have all issues of Car in the archive (as Autocar have just done).

Great content let down by treating the iPad as a small phone
Certainly, the content is typically a good read with great pics. Using an iPad Pro with a screen almost as big as the printed magazine is a bad joke... Each time you load a new edition or move around the same magazine and the text makes it look like you’re using a small phone screen. You constantly have to use two fingers to zoom out so the text gets smaller and you can see more of each page. It gets worse, while you can zoom out to make the text font small like a paper magazine, as soon as as you let go it very annoyingly makes the text that bit too big again... This is obsoletely ridiculously... Yes, if I get stuck somewhere and use my iPhoneX then it’s OK for size. But as I mostly use my iPad Pro I EXPECT to be able to read it and look at the pics like turning pages of the printed magazine. Considering it’s the same price as the printed magazine I really can’t understand it and won’t be resubscribing - or go back to the printed version. I also use Zinio for a few other magazines so it can be presented like a paper magazine and look better too... ... why is it like this?
Great when it works
As someone who sporadically goes back to my electronic articles as I do my print versions of Car, I can only say it has great articles , photos and videos. I regularly have problems with my e-purchases , sometimes not showing, needing repeated restores and today, some of them, showing poorly. As I say, when it works, great. I still have my print NSX, Ferrari 348, Porsche 911 Lotus Esprit V8 comparison from when the first NSX was first reviewed. I doubt whether I will be able to easily access e-issues of Car in 20 years. Possibly the worst App ever… shame
I love Car and receive the magazine every month. I recently upgraded to the digital subscription, but on a mobile phone, I have never come across such a terrible user experience. Constantly being asked to log-in to read articles and being re-routed to a website. Really Car? This experience takes away from the good work the magazine does. Hate it.

Online mag is good but is no substitute for the paper issues !!!!!
Mixture
I always find CAR to be the best car mag, with a great mixture of content. It does seem the last digital issue also had problems with mixing up its photo titles. I finding the scrolling easy to read but also reduces the pleasure as I like to read a bit then look at the stunning photos and go back to reading a bit more, with scrolling its one thing or the other. I also subscribe to modern classics and I find their approach to digital reading better, even if it is less “guided”

New app does not work - will cancel subscription
Subscription online not working and no help from support
I have been a reader for over 30 years and subscriber for 15. Added the online part couple (?) years now it’s not working and cannot get a response from Bauer support for nearly a week. When I did get response they said I never had the online subscription.... still awaiting a reply. Again.
Awful and unreliable
I need to use this app periodically on my travels. As soon as I want to use it, it just doesn’t work. I’m always getting Bauer media to fix it but it needs a rethink.
Problems
Great magazine, poor app. App issue does not appear until days after the print edition come out. Often have to restore purchases too. Come on Car.
Great content, atrociously edited
I have been a loyal CAR reader for decades and welcomed the move to digital. The good news is that the writing and photography are still great. But whatever part-time, untrained editor is in charge of spelling, captions, and making sure the right photos in the right place needs to be replaced with a full time, paid digital error. A month doesn’t go by without a couple of egregious errors that are eventually fixed after I point them out. No other digital magazine I read has these problems, and it detracts from what should be a fabulous reading experience.
Access to previous editions
I acquired my 12 month free subscription via a benefit through a national institution. I got the Sept edition (which was good) but Oct is chargeable as are all previous editions. All the help material ,in the APP, inc logout / login / refresh purchases does not solve problem. An app problem or something else?
Great content, shame about the app
Been using this a while and though the content is largely excellent (though sharpen up on the editing please, average once an issue where something is duplicated or in the wrong place) it’s infuriating startup procedure is draining. What’s the point of having an app that can download content to view OFFLINE if it insists on spending 2 mins trying to ‘optimise settings’ which basically means download special offers for a magazine you’ve already purchased? This is particularly annoying on the Tube...
App doesn’t work & support have not responded
Every time I renew my annual subscription the app stops working. Usually the support sort this out. However this time I have received no reply to my support email. Shame as content is excellent and I have been loyal to ‘Car’ for the last 30 years.
I like it but...too many errors!
CAR has always been my favourite car mag for many years...and the app is easy to use and navigate... ...but there are just too many mistakes and errors! Does anyone actually proof read the app version or try to view all the photos? I would suggest more time is spent on this before releasing it for the public to enjoy...it spoils the quality feel of the publication.
Why optimised for iphone?
Who sits down to enjoy reading Car Magazine on an iPhone? Why does the experience on iPad where most people are reading the digital edition have to degraded. Hideously large font, terrible navigation. Such a shame the elegant print edition has been turned into this.

Great magazine for the car fanatic
This is the magazine for those who love motoring, it is full of a variety of articles highlighting what is new in the world of motoring. The featured writers are excellent and show a depth of knowledge about the variety of marques and are clear to show the de eloping trends in the automotive world. For me if you are to subscribe to one magazine this will be the one to read every month Why not five stars? For me it is the functionality of the app that can be problematic and at times it can mean you loading and uploading in order to get your subscription. It also often will not recognise when updates by Apple have taken place causing further issues
Paying for it but it does not work
Off to talk to car again, one last try before it’s a call to cancel subscription to cease all business with car. And that’s after 20 years plus receiving paper copy. Aim was after time to migrate to digital. But that now off the table.
Great App!
The previous version of this app took up far too much space on my device. This version corrects that and now that a few subtle improvements have been made it is a great app, on par with any I have tried.
Making better for iPhone has made it terrible for iPad
Used to be beautifully curated on the iPad, but the desire to have universal compatibility across iPad and iPhone has just turned it into a series of very long columns.
Wonderful to see Car Magazine on iPad
As a match for your brilliant editorial please add retina display support (critical) and the ability to use portrait orientation for more natural reading. Thank you for bringing my favourite magazine to iPad.
Great on the iPhone
This app works wonderfully on the iPhone, really great to have the issue in my pocket for when I get a spare few minutes. Much better than the old version

Not good enough
Optimising for iPhone and not having an iPad version is a shortcut/cost saving that doesn't work for me. Why do I keep getting subscribe pop up pages on opening when i am already a subscriber ? ....just annoying. Bauer Media is a big group so I would have expected something better than this. It has potential but fails in small details. To be fair they have corrected back issue content errors when I complained about not getting what I paid for but it implies that there is no proof reading of the digital version. I am not sure if I will continue to subscribe for this or just buy the magazine at the Airport from time to time if the content interests me. A shame as I have been reading this on and off for 25 years.
Fantastic magazine, just a few annoying crashes
I have thought Car has being a great magazine for many years and I really enjoy it, being waiting ages for an iPad app as well. Only issue is that it seems to consistently crash while I am reading it which usually means going back to the start page. Evo mag does this as well so it may just be the base app but its pretty annoying. Others than that its a fantastic app, thanks Car
Good on the phone
If you want CAR on your iPhone this app delivers. Smart, interactive, built for the phone by the looks of it. Great way of keeping up to date while you’re on the move.
Broken by Bauer
Complete library deleted. App written by idiots. Used to take about 3 minutes to download an issue, now about 20 minutes. Yet to be able to open an issue. Update December 2022. They’ve solved the download issue as now absolutely nothing works. White screen with loading on it, nothing happens. Complete crap, great magazine ruined by Bauer app designers who are incompetent.
Great Magazine
I love the magazine. If I could change one thing about the app it would be to eliminate the slider text. Why can't we just go to the next page instead of having to fiddle with a sliding column?
Prefer paper
Decided to be ecological and stop having the print version. Not really getting on very well with it. I find it much less appealing, and the fact it has to load every time you want to read seems to put me off casual browsing like I used to with print. Car Mag is the same degraded version of the wonderful mag I used to love until Bauer took it over. Sadly it has lost its heart, and is now written for air-headed adolescents who love only Porsches and BMWs. A subscriber for over 50years, it is trying my patience nowadays.
Not a bad start...
Fantastic to finally have my favourite motoring magazine on the iPad. Had been mainly reading Evo UK lately due to their great App. First issue is a great start but needs extra work. A lot of text and images are not optimised for the retina display and look very rough. Also some of the interactive elements try a bit too hard and are difficult to discover or use. I'm sure it will get better with a few issues worth of experience under their belt. One more step to a paper free life!
I like it
I find it’s pretty good. I prefer the paper magazine where I know my progress through it (yes, I do read cover to cover) and am pleased that GB&U is included now. The app lets me keep up to date while I’m on holidays and that’s important to me. I’m a mechanical wrist watch enthusiast and these articles, and adverts, are gladly devoured. Advertising is part of the magazine and I like them to be included in the app version. I’d like a instant gauge as I’m reading the app of how far through the magazine I’ve reached. Car magazine is an absolute bible for me, whichever version, and I can’t put it higher than that.
App locks up
I have been a subscriber to Car Magazine for several years, but the poor quality of the App means that this is unlikely to continue, it locks up, then goes to a white screen, requiring reloading..not good enough!

What an E-mag App Should Be
Super easy and intuitive to navigate, consistently excellent photo & print clarity, viewable in landscape & portrait, no ads; what more could you expect? Sets the standard as far as I'm concerned. Pricey subscription, though. That's the review I wrote last year after I downloaded the app & subscribed. I originally gave the car app five stars. I neglected to send it, and it still holds true, except-- It is now unusable with the update to iOs 8: all my mags need to be downloaded anew, but the app simply refuses to allow it, advising me that I need to restart the app prior to downloading any issues. Said restart only brings the same pop-up warning, and the cycle begins anew... Update this app, Bauer-- I paid good money for the ability to read these mags.
