What people like
- Looks just like the real paper
- Easy to read offline anywhere
- Great for sharing articles with friends
What they complain about
- Ads interrupt you constantly
- Support never actually helps
- Keeps crashing when you open it
Great presentation
ePaper looks terrific and works seamlessly. It’s like reading the physical paper — but much quicker.
Useless on a Phone
Why anyone would want a replica of a printed paper on a phone or tablet is beyond me. It is impossible to read anything without scrolling all over the screen.
Very good
Not perfect but the best newspaper e-reader I have found so far
E-Paper vs Globe App
What a cluster. Purchased the epaper (apparently) on iPad yesterday. Had the full app on iPhone. iPhone said no subscription. Why in gods name are two apps with same name in store. Why does company not recognize a purchase on one as a purchase of paper in either version? Waste of 90 minutes search for solution with Apple Support.
Ok, not great
I like being able to view the paper in its original format, and I like that one can click on an article and it will open in its own window. When forwarding an article, the app will often grab just the picture and caption and forward that instead of the whole article. I haven’t found a solution to this other than blocking and copying to paste in another application. Finally, and this is a real issue, every so often the paper is just not there, and all you can get is yesterday’s edition. This usually fixes itself sometime during the day, but it is unacceptable when you read the paper first thing in the morning. I don’t know if this is an app issue or whether someone at the Globe just forgets to push the edition.
App is so easy to use
We switched to the digital Globe a few years ago and are very happy. So convenient to be able to read the Globe anywhere. And downloading editions is a great feature. Highly recommended!
Recent update a mess
The September 2024 update has made the app nearly useless.
Satisfied
I read the Globe on my iPad Air, and I really like being able to share articles. I don’t like being unable to comment on articles.
A downgrade
I often find it difficult to access the Globe as I cannot make the previous day’s addition disappear. That was not a problem with the previous iteration of this app. Needs to be fixed.
Improved but still needs work
It’s usable. I like the full page view, to remind myself that it’s a newspaper, though I mostly enlarge to read. However, while reading on an iPad Mini is much better than reading on a phone, it’s not great. I have discovered a workaround to get the current day’s paper, but that daily task should be easier. (BTW, I am a paid subscriber.)
Easy
This is my fourth or fifth year as a subscriber and I find this format to be easy and very convenient. Like the fact that if Ive missed a day of reading the paper I can go back to any issue I like and reread. Also you have the ability to download any article and send it to yourself or others. I also like to read the paper in the evenings in bed without much light on , I find to be a nice feature or online reading . I highly recommend this app!
Problems with new update
You can’t load the current edition without closing and reopening the app. The close button doesn’t work (iPad). The app support button in the App Store goes nowhere.
It’s about time - you can finally read the magazine
The app was broken for months. What took so long?
Not a good as the old globe App
A few days after I stopped being able to open the globe app on my old iPad I contacted support and was advised that they were phasing out the globe app and I would have to use the e paper. I’m not impressed… pages often won’t slide over, sometimes they are blank. It’s glitchy, there is a little page icon blocking part of the articles. Why did you have to fix it… It wasn’t broken, actually compared to the Globe app that I gave up on in disgust 15 ? Years ago it was excellent (it would miss a few things but not crashing was a plus).
Font size stuck at largest
Updated to 6.1.4 but article text font size still stuck in largest size. I need to adjust font size in each article I read. Font size adjustment is not saved throughout the paper. The “Save” selection does not work. iPad Air Gen 3 iOS 17.6
Love reading the hometown paper
Keeps me up to date of my hometown
You are idiots
Disgraceful app. If you are older, this app is unworkable. Worse it is not handicap accessible. Shame on the Globe. You get your money every month but you shut the app off to people who pay. You steal from the elderly.
Getting Very Tired of its Problems
All too often the editions get screwed up— missing sections, no edition at all, headlines and bylines mixed in with metadata from the editing software, etc. It’s clear that there is no-one doing basic quality control.
It’s great
Personally, I like that it looks like the old paper version. It was glitchy at first, but either I’ve learned how it works or they fixed it. I like that I can see previous editions and I can download editions as I want to.
Sundays
Another Sunday morning, another Boston Globe edition that is missing or partially uploaded. Today I have the comics and the Magazine, no news. Why can’t the Globe train its Sunday personnel to upload the paper properly? So frustrating to not have a paper in the morning.
Great when it works
They can’t keep this app working correctly. Sections missing. Complete issues missing. What’s the problem??
2nd time is a winner!
I have used and enjoyed the app for many years. When it started to have issues, I downloaded the latest version. It didn't work for a week or so and I tried the other e-version. Not acceptable. Today, I deleted the old app and re-installed the new app. BANG! Right back to the great version I have used for many years on 3 iPads!! Please don’t ever drop this app! It gives you the experience of reading the paper without all junk in the margins. AND - is much easier to download editions for off-line use. Whew!!
Annoying Bug
I subscribe through Apple. The last year or so on my monthly subscription renewals I’m forced to delete and reinstall the app. Since the latest monthly renewal I’m forced to do this every day. Customer service has ignored my requests for help.
Difficult to Turn Pages on iPad
Latest update has made it much more cumbersome to turn pages. The arrows that used to be on the left and right margins have been eliminated, so if the swipe-left action doesn’t work, which happens frequently, it usually takes multiple tries to flip to the next page. I’m not the only one to have this problem. Please correct this bug and issue an update.
Download
You ne Re know when it downloads. Slow and clunky.
Poor quality
This app is so bad that I’m considering cancelling my subscription to the globe newspaper. There are several issues, including a back button that rarely works (you need this to exit from reading a story once you’ve clicked on it) and inconsistent downloads. There have been no updates for a year so this tells me the app is not a priority for the newspaper company. The issues I’ve seen are in iPad mini. On Android, things are just as bad. In that framework, most stories cannot be opened by clicking on them and you have to zoom in to read them, following the links to where the story continues manually. These are all ongoing issues.
Hate this app
I just want to read the paper. That’s all. But every morningg when I open the app there’s yesterdays paper and I can’t clear it to get todays paper. So delete the app and reinstall it in order to get todays paper. I have complained multiple times to customer service (huh) and get no response. Its maddening
great paper, but app is broken
I can’t get today’s e paper, despite my up to date account. i just get the boston globe title page. The customer service is just a non human chatbot.
Great newspaper, terrible app
The app often hangs up and fails to open. Too bad because the newspaper, itself, is great.
Impossible to read
Every time I touch the screeen the thing goes back to the original view,so moving around a page or enlarging text becomes impossible. A fairly small investment could improve this ap dramatically.
Outraged over video ads in epaper!
I can’t tell you how much I HATE the new ads peppering the epaper. I read the Globe every day and like most loyal newspaper readers today I’m a senior. The sudden inclusion of multiple moving, shaking and blinking ads in almost every article are rendering it almost unreadable. Stop it! Now!
Sloppy application
Clumsy interface and the thumbnail of the current day’s newspaper does not appear on screen. There is a just a white rectangle as you wonder if you have a connectivity issue.
