What people like
- Honest journalism avoiding political pressure
- Good mix of local news
- Clear color photos make it pleasant
What they complain about
- Hard to read on small screens
- Painful login and sign-in issues
- Navigation is clumsy and confusing
- Articles often have typos and errors
Euan McColm
Euan’s weekly article is the first thing I read in SoS. Such an honest and inciteful journalist who tackles the issues that the majority of the weak spineless Scottish media choose to avoid in case they upset the Scottish Govt and SNP acolytes. Why is the Scottish media not all over the latest Swimney Govt debacle where their stance on trans prisoner rights were ruled as ‘illegal’ having had the audacity to irresponsibly ‘blow’ £187k in their legal costs and another £200k in picking up the other victorious sides’ costs!! Yet this goes largely unnoticed by the mainstream media….astonishing!!
Digital copy delayed
Quite often it’s not available first thing. Today for example it’s 0932 and it’s still not landed
Move the supplements
It’s a good way to read the paper, but I really wish they would move the supplements to the supplement section. Tired of paging through Scottish Life, Sport and Money when reading the paper.
Sign in every time
This is the only app that I have where I have to sign in every time. It’s a pain in the neck. This needs sorting out as I’ve come close you ending my subscription. Bad tech!! Also, the daily bulletin that comes by email is even worse. Why pick ‘remember me’ when it never does! I also have the BBC news Guardian apps, which are no bother.
Disappointing to not always be able to see newspaper
I have been frequently disappointed recently at being unable to view the newspaper format even at 8am. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. No joy. Eventually appears much later in the day. I also find the splitting of the letters pages and the moving of obituaries very annoying.
App not working day 2
Day 2 off App bought and paid subscription . Surprise Surprise. Won’t download today’s edition. App developers get your act together . All we want is something that actually works . I may get my money back I sent email to them jpl so we’ll see . Love my time being wasted . NOT !
Am I a subscriber?
Downloaded the app and accepted the subscription. Checked my bank and the amount is pending. When I try to read an article it invites me to subscribe by paying the same amount again. Not really prepared to do that. As it stands I have seemingly paid £12.99 for the privilege of downloading an app that I can’t use. I have deleted the app and waiting to see if it appears in my apple subscription list - hopefully if it does I can just cancel it and not have to pay £12.99 a month for literally nothing.
The Scotsman
The newspaper is often downloaded to the App later than one would expect for a daily publication.
Difficult to read on mobile
Formatting and layout difficult to read and confusing. Not worth the effort
Scotsman online
Is truely rubbish. You need to continually resign in. The letters you subscribe too such as art and culture do not open without password and then they are littered with adverts despite paying a subscription. No links are interactive when reading articles. Perhaps they should look at the times digital. They have it so right.
Keep on reading
This app lets me read my daily paper while away from home. Really great.
Poor App
Sadly I find the actual app clumsy with poor navigation compared to main broadsheet apps.
New format.
Looks brighter now with increased use of colour. Layout seems to work - apart from letters page which, having read the first page, one has to hunt through the paper to find the remainder of the letter one was reading. Surely it could be brought forward a page and given double spread pages, as before. Wouldn’t impact on the rest of the layout.
The Scotsman
There are no obituaries in the digital edition. I feel robbed!
Great Paper, shame about the copy checking
Enjoy my morning read on the app but something needs to be done about the number of errors in the articles. Generally typos, some missing words and occasional spelling errors. Frustrating as I now find myself looking for them!
The Best
Finding the Scotsman on my iPad was the best thing since sliced bread!
Not user friendly
I subscribed but can’t sign in because it says I have an active subscription but when I sign in it tells me I haven’t total waste of money and time. Zero stars is the true rating
The Scotsman Willie Archibald
At long last this publication has regained relevance and stature. Well done to the current team you are on the right track
Poor in comparison to others
The Times of London and WaPo show how it’s done, the Scotsman app is very, very poor in comparison - it’s literally a PDF copy of the paper - zero effort
Cross Word?
Nice clean copy and interesting read. BUT how on earth do you complete the crossword etc? I cannot even manage to print em. I can email to desktop but cannot sign in to page there since itunes security stuff not recognised. It was never like this with the Groaniad!
Clear bright pictures with direct comment.
So easy to read the Scotsman. Colour photos on every page make reading a pleasure.
Could we please have a proper newspaper website!
I don’t understand The Scotsman. I pay for a subscription, but my only online choices seem to be a pdf of the actual print paper, or a stream of random articles with only possible filtering is politics or sport. Very poor.
Cancellation
What a rigmarole - newspaper subscriptions are always a pain to cancel. The app itself is ok, but would prefer a bit more functionality, eg crossword etc. No longer for me
Cancelled
Couldn’t get family sharing to work, so no use to me, sadly. Quite like the paper though.
Access!
I have subscribed for this newspaper online since it was available. Every month I have to go through the ritual of passwords etc, This month the app won’t even allow that! About time Scotsman addressed this access problem. Don’t you want people to read your publication ?
Ugly Sisters!!
Why is the Scotsman so insistent on promoting the old firm. What about the rest of Scottish football? Why is my feed always about these 2 waste of space ‘Scottish teams’!!!!!
Scotsman app
Useless app - impossible to access any copy other than today’s and equally impossible to access the magazine on a Saturday. No wonder readership is going down.
Not really any better than the website
The app is more difficult to read than the website and the comments section does not exist meaning that if you want to comment you need to go to the website. While seeing a pdf of the actual newspaper is good. It is not optimised for mobile devices. If there is one good thing it is that there is less advertising and click bait.
Working very well
Easy to navigate, no crashes. I like the clear colour photos. I would really like to print off the crosswords and sudoku Really recommended
Not happy
The update is a mess. No Sunday paper until afternoon Downloading is more complex and often doesn’t work.
Hopeless new app
I do not have time to faff around trying to access the paper. Impossible to return to the copy as there is no link. It gives you yesterdays copy and after 30 minutes I am still trying to find today’s copy. I will have to cancel my subscription that is if I can access the page! Why was the App changed? I gave it one star but it does not warrant any stars! PF Since I wrote the first review I am very pleased with how it has improved and I cannot fault the App at the time of writing this. Very pleased with the outcome. PF
Great asset while in lockdown
Never used I,pad for newspaper reading, but as in lockdown ,superb way of getting my daily fix, with no contact worries ,very well done and much appreciated Harry McKerchar
New format
This new format is so frustrating. Please go back to the last one. It was so easy to use. One could find a page easily without flicking pages one by one. Seriously, progress is not being made. Hate the new start too. Moving circles !!! Why do we need to change things which work.
A great paper: make the switch
A really good read: a balanced mix of Scottish, British and world news. Much more centrist that English newspapers. Great app, too. I love the feel of “turning” the pages.
Scotland on Sunday
Cannot download. Reason for one star.
Scotsman Daily Newspaper
Plenty of local news you don’t get on other publications and respected pundits
Not designed for phone medium
I had to buy this to experience it. It’s like a photocopy of hard copy newspaper so very difficult to read. Not user friendly as per other national digital newspapers in which you see headlines and can click on content in easy to read format easily scrollable and easy to navigate between well organized articles. I am also incensed that despite cancelling within 5 minutes of accessing it, I had to pay for a month’s use that I won’t be using. I feel angry and conned.
