it’s like doom but cooler in my opinion. my only complaint is the you can’t rotate screen orientation. i’d appreciate an update for that! i use a dedicated remote play controller and you can’t flip the physical port and it sucks that the game can flip orientation.

Movement

Great work on this! I’m quite stunned to see this game available on iOS. What would make this perfect is if we could adjust the movement acceleration. Your character moves too fast. Controls for walking also feel like you’re swimming because of this. If there was a way to slow movement down (maybe with a slider control), it would make so much easier to manage your character using touch controls. Now, all we need is Apotheosis X! I know it’s a non-official title but I considered it to be the best overhaul for AlephOne. It would make it an awesome addition to iOS gaming.

Developer has fallen behind

I regret to say that the game has not been updated for the iPhone 5 and up. The small screen area means your thumb will slip off the virtual joystick in gameplay. The developer recently said they would add controller support some time in the future (no ETA). I suggest waiting till then. I would love an optional, second virtual joystick with tap shooting so it works with the Fling control sticks (sold at the Apple Store now, I hear). I could be wrong, but movements also seem a little slow to respond. Look centering should also be optional.

Can we customize the violence?

As an avid gamer and enthusiast, I recently had the opportunity to dive into the world of "Marathon." This first-person shooter by Bungie undoubtedly boasts thrilling gameplay and immersive graphics. However, I believe it's essential to discuss a certain aspect of the game's content that left me with mixed feelings. "Marathon" undoubtedly offers an engaging, action-packed experience. Yet, I couldn't help but notice the presence of mild but noticeable blood in various scenes throughout the game. Whether it's the result of combat encounters or environmental elements, the graphical depiction of blood is a recurring theme. My concerns primarily revolve around the potential impact of such content on a wide range of players. While I understand that many gamers enjoy intense, action-packed experiences, it's equally vital to consider those who may have sensitivities or preferences for a less graphic experience. Exposure to such content, especially for younger audiences, can be a cause for concern. In light of these concerns, I would like to propose a thoughtful addition to the game. I believe it would greatly benefit "Marathon" if the developers considered including a "Disable Blood" option in the settings menu. This option would allow players to tailor their gaming experience to their comfort level, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the game to its fullest while accommodating diverse preferences. I don't want my concerns to overshadow the many positive aspects of "Marathon." The gameplay mechanics are solid, the graphics aren’t impressive (but they’re good enough), and the storytelling is engaging. By addressing the blood content concern, I believe the game could be made even more accessible and enjoyable to a broader audience. In conclusion, "Marathon" is undoubtedly a thrilling gaming experience. My aim in writing this review is not to detract from its many strengths but to encourage the developers at Bungie to consider the addition of a "Disable Blood" option. This simple change could make the game even more inclusive and accommodating to a diverse player base. I hope this feedback is taken into account for the benefit of all players. For those who share my concerns or wish to voice their opinions, I encourage you to reach out to the developers directly through their official channels or forums. Together, we can contribute to a gaming experience that respects a wide range of preferences and sensitivities.

Commendable, with some drawbacks.

Bringing forward such a classic game will naturally have challenges, and this developer has done an admirable job with a substantial legacy. To cross-platform the game into a touch-screen interface, too, requires finesse and a sense of style that the author has achieved admirably. As with any app, however, there are two modes of thought in the developer community regarding audio. This game doesn’t give players the annoying choice between the developer’s sounds or Total. Silence., but neither does it let user-driven audio be the dominant/only noise. There is no volume control in game at all. Apart from that, this remains the paragon of early fps games, faithfully made playable in the modern world. Neither DOOM, nor Quake, this was the bridge between 2-D and 3-D engines that paved the way for COD, CS, UT, and most directly Halo. I’m so glad this got made. :-)

A fun mobile port with some issues

After extensive play I can say I really like this. It’s fun. Except… that dumb option where releasing from the movement control or really just using the movement control activates terminals or interacts with the environment. EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE THAT OPTION DISABLED! On top of that I hate the auto-fire and wish for there to be an option to turn that off too. It’s weird when you start firing, but it’s not you and suddenly you have less ammo than when you started. Also, added customization for buttons would be nice because the trigger buttons are annoying to use with how small they are. When you’re just trying to fire bullets from the assault rifle sometimes it’s real easy to slip into the middle and grenade yourself. One more thing to mention, sometimes after start up when entering a mission everything is plastered in a green or turquoise tint. I know it’s a port, so despite all of that, it’s still a really good game I recommend playing.

Needs some work

Not a bad game, never played the original, but I played some original Doom, which I enjoy but don’t want to pay for, but the global positioning is not a favorite of mine, so, logically, turned it to swipe which decided to be annoying, couldn’t get through the first level, couldn’t even open a door, first time I tried, the area would mess with the looking around, you could only turn left, but it seems very well made, perhaps it was just that I was using a phone, genuinely disappointed it didn’t work

I’ve never played marathon before I downloaded it for mobile but I gotta say, it’s really fun! Obviously some of the mechanics are janky but that’s because marathon was the first game of its kind to do a lot of things. The port for mobile is pretty good, a little janky but good nonetheless. Controls need to be fixed

Marathon is a really good game but the controls let down. Turning around is used by right finger and by moving the device, making it impossible for people who are playing on moving objects. Add the way they use the primary fire and secondary fire, you start to notice when getting the assault rifle. The buttons are wide and your finger will slip to the secondary wasting precious ammo. Also it would of been nice to been told what med-kits were, I spent 5 levels not knowing what they were. Part from that it’s a good game.

Good try, needs work

As other have said the controls are way too sensitive. More critically I've found a big bug. I saved and then got killed as I left the console. Now when it loads it comes up and I get killed before the controls load. I'm stuck in a loop: load, die, load, die. There's no option to bail out to the home screen to restart. I can't even try to dodge and survive long enough to escape. I can't buy Master Chef, something I was thinking of doing. I'm stuck in a blind end. Yes it's a free game but come on....

Unplayable

This game is nothing but awesomeness, my only problem are the controllers. It is very very hard and uncomfortable to play on the ipad, and it needs an option to change the virtual joystick to any position on the screen, also because it is a FPS on the ipad and it is hard to play it MUST have the option to turn right and left with the same virtual joystick used to move back and forth. I really hope these 2 issues are fixed to make the game a bit more easy to play without struggling with the controllers. It really is unecessary to be able to look up and down in this game because of its original design. I hope that you guys fix this and i will change the rating to 5 as soon as it gets fixed, thank you.

Gyro controls?

I cant turn off gyro controls. It’s totally a missing option in control preference, says its optional in the controls description... I’m confused. Ohhh finally found it, realized you can scroll down further in preferences. Also IMO one should definitely turn off (lift movement button to activate). I was constantly activating terminals in the middle of a firefight or unintentionally. I assume this helps with certain sections involving timed doors/puzzles but ya Im keeping this toggled off. There are some more options for controls in the ios settings under the app itself, tailor to your liking... now all I wonder is what does the Master Chief toggle do? Guess I’ll find out, I can’t keep that one unchecked.

One little (big) issue

Really intuitive and fun port. But every time I turn my phone off or leave the app for any short amount of time, all progress is lost without saving. That’s quite unfortunate, but still shouldn’t be too big of an issue if you intend to dedicate any time to playing, as the levels are succinct and contain a fair number of save points. Just don’t forget to save first or you’ll have to start over at the last “pattern buffer” station

This is not Marathon

I played to original 3 Marathon games to death back then and must say that this is not Marathon... But more like Doom or Quake. What made me like Marathon and Halo was the slow pacing of the game, which also made me prefer those games over Doom and Quake. The pacing right now is waaaay off, which makes the game almost unplayable and well, unenjoyable. I was fed up after 10 minutes of warping from the two ends of the stage in less than 5 seconds. How can you play a game like that, especially on a touch screen ? Fix the pacing and I might return to play again. Otherwise, this is a nice effort on porting a classic. Just don't mess up with the gameplay variables because that is way makes it a good game or not. Thanks. ^_^

So glad it's on iOS but dislike the controls

I'm really happy Marathon is on iOS but I find it extemely difficult to play using these controls, unfortunately... Even "Easy" mode is super hard because it's so difficult to aim and even sometimes the controls are not really responsive. That said, it's great there's an iOS version and I guess I'll just have to be ultra patient when playing... Oh I have to say I was kind of surprised by the black corners of the health bars etc, instead of transparent rounded corners. Should be pretty ultra simple to layer a transparent PNG or something? Great classic

Really nicely done. My only suggestion for improvement would be that due to the view springing back to centre as soon as you move forward it is impossible to reach certain areas using the grenade hopping technique. If there was an option to have the look spring disabled then this would not be an issue. In other words your left thumb controls the movement an strafing whilst your right is continually making sure you are facing the right way. This would mean you could run forward whilst looking down. Other than that, thanks for bringing Marathon to iOS!
