Has it All
CrewNerd has every setting, flexible screen view options, slick data charting post-workout. I rely on it every rowing outing. Highly recommend.
Wanted it to work
Purchased this for competitive flatwater kayak training and racing. After several hours of training it only turned green and was able to connect to satellite for maybe two minutes total. The only stat it showed was speed. Tried all suggestions and ideas but could not get it to connect and it was basically useless. You have to buy it also to find out if it really works. Went ahead and bought a $1200 Garmin watch instead. Worked much better than this app.
Works well in a pinch
Downloaded it on the water because my stroke coach was almost dead, and it works pretty well. Strokes per minute and distance are consistent and accurate. Splits are a little weird, because it’ll tell me 5:25 on a sprint and 1:33 on a paddle sometimes so you kinda have to use your intuition on that but it still works well. Meters per stroke is very finicky though. It often times will be completely wrong. This app isn’t going to be as good as an NK speed coach, but it is still good
Disappointed
Distance, stroke rate are OK, 500m split readings are really bad, I tried all the speed methods available and only got worse. I was benchmarking against my Suunto 9. I paid for life, going back to Android apps.
5star if could be on Apple Watch
This is a great app but would be the best paddling app of you could have this on Apple Watch as I don’t take my phone paddling.

Wow! My review was read and I received immediate instructions on how to fix the problem! Thank you!!!! Now I can capture maps of my training sessions :) Previous review: I thought I bought the monthly subscription. I guess the ‘free trial’ is part of it. So it only recorded 3 minutes of my training session. Ugh!!! Just give one free day no limit as the trial vs 3 min…. I guess I have to wait 7 days till the trial is over and my subscription kicks in…
Keeps stopping tracking
Went for a row but it turns off tracking after around a minute or two. I go rowing for an hour and I kept having to stop to fiddle with this stupid app. Useless.
Export active/total calories
Great app, useful and reliable. I would love if it would export to apple fitness (not just health) so it logs workout time and active/total calories. Silly - by it’s how my friends and I compete with fitness.
History
When trying to go back looking into past rows I would like to have more distinguishing features on the subject line . I am a cyclist and use Ride with GPS, where I can put a title to each ride and I can also see how many miles it was without having to open each ride individually. It would be great to have that easy access on CrewNerd

Horrible
Update 2025.5 is terrible. Previous updates were great. Now with this update they have made the app cumbersome to use. Example, Home Screen cannot be changed. Why do I need to see courses? I’m going to look for a different app as they have completely f….ked this one up.
Could be more robust
I have used CrewNerd for 5 years and like it a lot. My only complaint is that it will switch off. I have set it to begin recording a practice then find later it quit. Practice records are nice but not critical. One regatta of 7.8 miles across Puget Sound out of Port Townsend was one I wished I had. Flat water shells are at their limits there. I wanted to see how consistant we were during a hour of hard rowing. Our 8x+ always was in the top 6.
Gebruik tijdens roeitrainingen
De speedcoach applicatie werkt erg goed tijdens het roeien. Het display is goed leesbaar. Ook door de waterdichte hoes die we met klitteband in de boot hebben bevestigd blijft het display goed zichtbaar. Bij de ingestelde workouts is de piep goed hoorbaar na een interval. Het is wel jammer dat de gps bij bewolkt weer onnauwkeurig werkt. Ook is de snelheid niet af te lezen in de boot maar pas achteraf. De facebooksoftware mag nog wel iets uitgebreider en de uploads zouden gratis moeten zijn. De batterij van de iphone gaat vrij snel leeg, 3 uur max. Het is een leuke vervanging voor de 'echte' meter, maar die is toch net effe beter.
Some components are good, some not so
In general it is simple to use. The setting and customization is good. Stroke rake, boat check time, timer is good and working. But... the pace is inaccurate, really inaccurate. Most likely due to the sample rate or GPS accuracy in the phone. But if you’re serious about training this really does not replace a stroke coach or the like. So save the money and put it towards a real stroke coach.

Not so great
So I paid the ransom. Lets face it, 65 for an app is more than we are used to paying. Im not sure who wrote those other reviews, but it would seem they work for NK. Lets start with the pros. Its accurate. If you want to measure a 2000 meter course, this will be pretty much right on, or at least as close as you will ever need to be. So for total distance and time, and thus ave/500 it is great. So to run your interval workouts it will work too. A major plus is the check and bounce meter. 20 years of rowing, and I have never seen that. Go ahead and back those blades in, too much and you actually start increasing check. It takes just the right amount... Neat. (BTW, NK why didnt you think of that in your old school coaches?) As for the cons, number one and the only point in my review that matters. IT IS NOT ACCURATE FOR YOUR CURRENT SPLIT/500. The reason for this isn't NKs fault. GPS is accurate +/- 6 feet or so. ( Intentionally scrambled per the US military to give our troops the edge) Other running and biking programs have the same current spedometer problems. Good enough to measure a 2k course. But not so for these 3 strokes compared with the last 3. Example: With a green gps lock, on a wide open reservoir, I'm rowing at a constant speed, my old school speed coach is staying right at 2:30 and my iphone might say 2:13 then 2:39. At the end of the row, the averages are the same as then the iphone is using total distance and time, but what you really need a speed coach for is what you are rowing NOW! Its like being on the erg with no splits! So basically useless in the way most of us use a speed coach. This limitation is not NKs fault, but CHARGING $65 FOR A USELESS SPEED COACH IS! My advice, get a free running or biking app and calibrate your impeller driven speed coach. This app isnt worth the $.
Inconsistent Performance
I started off with CrewNerd Lite to see if the app was worth the price. After a few rows, I opted into the full version of CrewNerd and was initially very impressed. I liked the support for my Polar H7, which coupled with the tailorable Row/Paddle page, allowed me to see my strokes per minute (SPM) and heart rate in BPM. Unfortunately, the SPM and BPM are now working sporadically, which leads to a frustrating workout, especially when your coach is telling you to keep a specific SPM.
Love that data
I’ve used this app for several years every time that I’m on the water. It is easy use and helpful to review my row and my line on the map. I had some issues with the app turning off a a few years ago. After I contacted the developer, they got right back to me and worked with me to solve the issue. Great customer service.
Not recommended
Good concept, poor implementation. The displayed data is all over the place, not at all accurate. Not recommended.
Needs Apple Watch remote
Great app, but almost impossible to use on the boat with a waterproof app. Stopped using it for now as I can get a cheaper app with watch remote.
No Graph
Enjoy the app but really needs graph like NK unit has. Too much info and no way to review it.
Great app!
Use it for sculling, coxing, and sweep. I purchased it when it was first introduced. One time purchase with no subscription fees. and have used it every row since. Very user friendly. I recommend it to all my rower friends.
Did not work with Apple Watch Ultra 2

Second to none!
I’ve used CrewNerd since 2009 or so. It just works, is always updated and simply gets better and better with age (unlike me, as ~14 years of app data shows…)

Still great
Yes, still pricey, yes still doesn't upload to Concept2 or to multiple sport apps more commonly used in the US such as Runkeeper or MapMyFitness. It does sync with MapMyTracks quite nicely. I'm also using the Wahoo Bluetooth heart rate monitor with it. Forget the recommendations to use the NK soft pouch; if you value your iPhone, get a case from Lifeproof and stick it to your scull with velcro. The soft pouches (I didn't have one from NK) get near invisible punctures (although my phone still survived the water inside the pouch!)
Best rowing app ever!
Crew Nerd’s team of developers can be counted on to keep updating and improving the app as people use it. We have been using this app as a team of rowers for many years and are constantly impressed. Best money ever spent on an app. Keep track of your workouts and your boats, never use post-its or stroke coaches in the boat again! And you can upload to Strava too. Five stars.

Speed Coach
As a competitive masters rower this app works well for my needs. After initially thinking I had bought a dud because I had the settings wrong - coaching mode; this app has been really useful. It does all the things a traditional speed coach does at a sixth of the price. I can download my rows; map them out and call for help if I need it. Get a waterproof pouch for it and you're set.
Truly the best all around rowing app
I use this mostly to track my workouts for Strava as the Strava watch app is buggy as heck. The watch only mode works great!
Rowing coach
Great for rowing though depending on the run of the river the rating can be erratic.
2 questions
Can i download data as a fit file? Can you add a third data set to the graph? Stroke coach will show 500 meter pace, stroke rate, and heart rate on the same graph. Very pleased with CrewNerd. Especially the heart rate measurements because connecting a polar heart rate monitor to a speed coach can be difficult. Thanks
Great Paddling App
This app is definitely worth a look. I use it on my surfski every time I go out. It's good insurance to get the waterproof pouch from "Overboard". From a surfski perspective you won't be able to make use of the stroke rate facility as you generally don't paddle all the time coupled with the fact you can't exert sufficient impetus to register the strokes. That's probably the only feature you won't be able to make use of. It took some experimenting to get my head around how to get the best out of it. Once you've accomplished that it's "a piece of cake". It is difficult to see the screen in direct sunlight, however, if you create appropriate workouts, the thing will set of sirens and bells to alert you to your next move. You can store all your history and make comparisons.
