It's better than before.
At first it sucked, badly. It would constantly freeze and crash at me to the point I just got rid of it completely. I still have problems were it freezes, crashes, and it doesn't let me refresh or log out. Minus the negativity it works better than before.

Broken app
Reported ads come always back, no matter what. There are still the nsfw accounts and bots which can’t be reported. The app loading lets your dashboard jump up and down constantly so that you lose where you are. For an app that exists for so long it’s a pity how bad it works.

Most posts are super funny but once you search something up it takes over almost your entire feed.

How is that the link from tumblr blogs open on safari instead of within the tumblr app if it’s a link to another tumblr page? See if I am on the app, right, stay with me, and there is a link on the page that leads to tumblr page shouldn’t I still be redirected but on tumblr app still?

i love tumblr but i really wish there was a way to switch your secondary blog to your main blog and vice versa. like just click a button and now your sideblog can do all the things a main blog can do, and your old main blog is now limited. i feel like this should be doable???

Too many ads
This site has become overrun with intrusive and annoying ads for products and services that are unnecessary. Ads are triggered when you click on someone’s page as well. That’s incredibly intrusive and annoying. No other website I’ve been to has done that. The app itself is laggy, slow, and freezes up when I try to block someone.

I really love this app, it got me into reading and art, it’s a shame there’s no way to sort the posts that you like into folders or anything, because it’s really hard to scroll down and look for a post you liked.

re-downloaded tumblr to my phone after a year or so offline. first thing i noticed was the amount of ads (i had 5 autoplay video ads take up the entire screen in 30sec of scrolling, approx 1 ad every 4 posts) and trying to scroll past these ads meant touching my screen, at which time they would open my app store to whatever 'game' was being advertised. i used to prefer the tumblr app as i would post on the go, add hashtags, reblog, scroll etc as i would instagram or snapchat, but the ads glitching out, auto playing, taking up my whole phone screen and opening other apps in my phone (ie. app store) every few seconds has made it downright unusable. love you tumblr, i've been a user since 2013, but cmon, find a way to get money through your platform that doesn't punish your slowly declining user base.

Auto opening ads
UPDATE: they seem to have fixed the problem outlined below! HOWEVER! They then made it even worse where now any time you click on someone’s blog there is a mandatory add you have to watch before you CAN SEE SOMEONES BLOG????? ON TUMBLR. THE BLOG SITE. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. I only opened the app again out of boredom but it’s almost funny how hard they seem to be working to ruin this site The toggle sensitivity for your finger even BRUSHING over an ad will immediately open it. Seriously cannot even (carefully) scroll more than 3-5 times without it deciding I’ve intentionally clicked on an ad and opening in my browser. Not only is it extremely frustrating, I also don’t feel comfortable using the app anymore because I don’t trust the ads themselves not to be scams or malware and if the app is auto opening things like that it’s completely unusable. Used to love tumblr for following artists and funny posts but it honestly feels like the owners of tumblr hate it? They seem to make every possible wrong choice when it comes to the success of the site….
PLEASE ADD BOOKMARKS OR PLACEHOLDERS FOR FANFIC READERS!!

It’s ok but not what it used to be
Tumblr used to be super visually appealing, it was the father of Pinterest in many ways. Now it’s very busy visually, lots of ads and text based posts, it’s actually quite hard to find aesthetic posts even when searching for a topic, this is quite frustrating. I hope they will go back to the way it was, this is not engaging at all.

Ads opening without clicking on them (EDITED)
EDIT: since I first left this review, i’ve noticed significant improvement in the ads i’m shown. Yes some of them are still for AI companies, and i’d say the volume has remained the same, but they no longer play obnoxious sound automatically, and most importantly they don’t open to the app store/safari after barely grazing them with my thumb as i’m scrolling, which I am very very grateful for. The user experience has improved significantly, and I feel as though my concerns were heard and listened to, which for a large well known company such as Tumblr is a pretty encouraging feat. I’ve updated the review from 2 star to 4. Original review: I’ve used Tumblr for 10+ years, and until recently it has been my preferred social media app. However, the sheer volume of self playing ads and ads that open without even clicking on them makes me hate using this app. I understand ads are necessary in the current online climate and i’m happy to continue seeing them, but having an ad open in the app store/redirect me to safari literally every 20 seconds is exhausting and punitive. And advertising AI apps on here? Gross. Pathetic. Loser behaviour. Please fix this. The user experience is suffering for it and makes me not want to use your platform anymore.

Run by people who clearly don’t use it
Listen, I have been a longtime user of tumblr, on both desktop and mobile. The staff just dropped THE WORST update I have ever seen, which is saying something because they’ve made some real stinkers over the years. They have broken a fundamental part of how tumblr works by essentially splitting off each reblog addition as its own post, with all engagement (likes, reblogs, comments) thus going only to the poster of that reblog rather than the actual OP. As a result, posters have lost a huge fraction of the engagement they should be receiving, and the ability to interact with people down a chain has essentially evaporated. Upon receiving a positively gigantic amount of negative feedback regarding this new system, the staff responded with, to wit, “We hear you! We will not change it back.” That is an open insult to the entire community of this app. They saw the entire user base rise up against their changes and their response was to simply double down and pretend that people will just magically start liking it. I will NOT be updating this app until this is fixed.
