An essential dictionary

It’s totally comprehensive and very easy to use. Particularly helpful because all the verbs are conjugated.

Don’t waste your time

I can’t believe I paid for this dictionary. I only bought it as when I changed phones my old one was available in the App Store. Don’t waste your money get Word Reference instead. Buggy as well.

★★★★☆ United Kingdom · v2.12 · 19 Aug 2026

A very good all round dictionary. 4.5 stars out of 5.

I’m really pleased with this version of the Collins dictionary. It was a one off payment, rather than a prohibitively expensive subscription service, and I must say I find the dictionary thorough and detailed. My only bugbear as my Spanish has improved is that at times I can’t find very specific words I’m looking for and this is when I generally resort to monolingual dictionaries like the Spanish RAE.

★★☆☆☆ United Kingdom · v2.11.1 · 14 Feb 2025

In my view it’s too expensive

This app is too expensive for what it has to offer. At that price, I would expect to have included the pronunciation of each word, but it is not there. I also find the UI a bit awkward to use. To get correct search results, it is necessary to reset the search bar each time I want to search for something. I just can’t type a new word and press return. The search is also a bit limited; for example, if I try to search for sin embargo, it returns nothing. Yes, it has nice conjugation of each verb, but at £17, I would expect more.

Review

Sometimes I like this but half the time it does not have the word I want and I have to look it up on the Internet. Why does it not default to do a search as soon as you type a word in ? I have no idea how to return it back to search and am so frustrated. And I paid for this be app. The last app I bought was discontinued with the new phone and was fantastic !

Seems to be missing audio pronunciation function

Purchased the latest app to replace obsolete version which I’ve happily used for years. The latest iteration doesn’t seem to be an improvement, it has no audio pronunciation function (unless I’m missing how to turn it on) and seems to have far less examples of word usage than before.

Could be better

There are many, many words you can not find. In an otherwise very useful App, which I use daily, I do not understand why they leave out words. OK , authors of novels often show off their vocabulary, using less common terms but surely an electronic dictionary is not under pressure of space ( unlike a pocket dictionary)?

Nothing special at all

Nothing special, I feel it could use this technology much better. At times it’s very irritating when typing & selecting words and the verb section at times is more of a hindrance than a help. I payed a lot of money and do not feel that I should have.

Essential and recommended for any MFL student

I am a university MFL student on my year abroad. I have just downloaded this app onto my iPad and it's amazing! For those times that I don't have an Internet connection but need to look up potentially any Spanish word or verb, I know I can! I like how you can change the font type and size (as I don't like the default typeface) and you can favourite useful words and verbs. I also like how it shows the regional language differences for both languages I.e. British English and Spain Spanish etc. I would have given this a 5/5 if it didn't lag so much (you only really notice it when you type something in the search box quickly and the suggestive search automatically begins to show results based on what you're typing). Also it would be good if there were a separate dictionary and verb conjugation interface. You can only get onto a conjugation of the verb if you first search for the verb in the dictionary. I would recommend this app to any language student that can't afford a proper bilingual dictionary or can't carry one around!

★★☆☆☆ United Kingdom · v2.10 · 8 Oct 2023

Good content, 2nd rate app

The dictionary itself is excellent. The the app it’s wrapped in is bug ridden and 2nd rate. Shockingly poor, given what a simple task this involves in programming terms. Here are some example bugs. There’s no way to get back to the main menus. Dark mode comes on randomly, and often only on parts of the page. When dark mode is working, it puts dark text on a dark background so you can’t read the text. Really. The search bar functions incredibly badly, and you regularly have to restart the app to refresh it. If you can get another Spanish dictionary, do.

Steadily deteriorating with updates

I have used the iPhone app of this dictionary for several years. Each version tends to lose functionality and ease-of-use. In addition it is odd that there are numerous verbs which are conjugated but they have no translation! It is a bit hard to understand why a dictionary would not give you the meaning of a word!

— MissionTravellor

★★★☆☆ Canada · v2.3 · 21 Sept 2013

BandaLover

There are pros and cons to the last update: Pros: 1. Choice of font and size 2. When conjugating verbs the translation is in smaller type below the conjugation 3. You can now set the default that you want verb conjugations to open in, i.e. Presente de indicativo, Futuro simple, Pretérito perfecto simple, etc. 4. You can click on " > " and scroll down to view all verb tenses 5. You can type numbers directly into the search tool and they will be translated 6. You can star entries you look up frequently Cons: 1. The "History" feature used to have the words in alphabetical order, making it easy to find a word you recently looked up. The words are no longer in order, making them more tricky to find quickly 2. Since the update the app is constantly freezing Overall it has been useful app, that I'm glad I purchased.

Thought this was good until...

This app has a serious problem if you add a lot of favorites/stars. It refuses to launch, freezes, crashes out every time. I have just lost all my favorites because I had to delete the app and reinstall just to get it working again. These days a favorites system is basic functionality that should be implemented without destroying the usability of the app. At this price it's inexcusable.

El mas usado!

I'm in Spain right now and this app has been the most used and allowed me so much depth of experience. Not only does it translate unknown words, but uses many in various phrases to give a much deeper depth of meaning (e.g. Look up "asi" to see how many different uses of the word there are). It also does a great job of showing which uses tend to be used more in Latin America or Spain. Yes, the most expensive app I've bought and no doubt worth it :)

Bring back the old version!

I agree 100% with Andrew Stoneman's review. I have been using the orginal version since I first bought my iPhone. It was far, far easier to navigate round and it's appearance was far superior. Why on earth has been been changed? Is it possible to revert to the older version?

— mike-on-the-costa

★★★☆☆ United Kingdom · v2.3 · 4 Jul 2013

Old version

I found the old version much easier to use. The separate verb tables were great. If the verbs and the rest had been a bit more integrated so that it was not necessary to reenter a word in the other half to get a meaning it would have been perfect. The new one is just a scan of an old fashioned dictionary with a bit of interaction for verbs. Clunky!

Please bring back the old version

My iPhone automatically downloaded the latest version of this app two days ago, and I hate it! I have been using the old version of this app for over two years and I found it really useful. There was only one change I would have like to see: the ability to automatically switch between the dictionary and the separate screen showing conjugations of each verb (you needed to search for the word again). The new version includes the three old screens: dictionary, conjugations and numbers in a single screen (the conjugations form a separate entry, shaded grey, above the main dictionary definition) which eliminates the double searching (positive improvement) but is somewhat messy. The font has been updated too and is less clear than the old font. Sorry, I just don't like these changes. The old version was far better!

Give me back the old version please!!

Generally, when apps are updated, they are improved. With this update, you have removed a lot of the content of the previous version which I used regularly. Newer version is less intuitive

Hey, I have downloaded this App a while ago and found the navigation perfect. The app magically guessed the word that I was after. A few months ago the interface and the logic has changed. Unfortunately this update has also impaired the usability. For example, searching for "pis" will list "piso".
