Awesome Sega CD Port!
I had a lot of fun with Vay, it’s a port of the original sega cd game from 1993. Classic RPG, but includes modern improvements to make it entertaining. I really liked the option to have the 16 bit backgrounds or the HD updated ones. For those who want less grind, there’s options to increase the xp and gold you get from the battles. This was much appreciated as there were times I didn’t want to grind just to afford better armor. One gripe, the names are all changed from the original, so when you use a walkthrough or look for help it can be confusing. Weapons, armor, and items are all called something different. It would be nice to have an option to switch the names to the original so you can match up items with what they are referred to online. Overall I’m really happy with the purchase and had a lot of fun playing through. I’d love to see more sega cd remakes from working design! Thanks devs!!
A Faithful Port, But
At the time of release, controller support was not supported in iOS. That said, if the developers of this port can keep up with the iOS changes that have run many games into the I OS graveyard than they could take the extra time to add controller support to this title which would make it a much more enjoyable experience. In terms of the game itself, there are much better iOS RPG games to play on the platform at this point and unless you are aiming at nostalgia or curious about the Sega CD, this is a title better off dismissed for more relevant gaming experiences.
This iOS remake is a 2.5 star mixed bag
1) First of all, I am HAPPY to see this old Sega CD J-RPG classic back into the mainstream. And for under $6 bucks, it is worth it. 2) It is clear that several major great upgrades have been made to this game. The ability to expedite exp and gold earning by 4x rate of original game are THE best upgrade made. This is critically important, as the GRIND for exp and gold in the Sega CD original was unbearable. If you are like me and most 1990s-early 2000 J-RPG style gamers, you enjoy story with a moderate number of random battles. Grinding out levels and gold gets old fast (and why so many cheat devices came out in that period, like Action Replay and Game Genie, to reduce the grind). In this regard will like this remake’s exp/gold boosts! 👍🏻 You can also turn off random encounters to get somewhere fast (be careful NOT to do it that too often or low level will speed doom at mandatory boss battles!). 3) Here is where I think this is remake has failed at its worst: they RUINED the original Sega CD high quality movie voices and cut many of the clips!!! 😖 WHY?!? The original game voice work on Sega CD is extremely good HQ quality to this day. This remake’s voice acting is horrible and the sound is low. The opening sequence totally sucked. Also, why change the names of places and characters (while giving ability to rename??)? Bizarre. I was also sad to see this remake did not add a “stat change” at shops, to easily see if an item sold would increase or decrease character stats. This is a small, yet awesome quality of life upgrade. 4) Finally, despite the many upgrades to graphics, the video graphic quality is subpar and that is worst letdown. One would expect the video/cutscene imagery quality to be sharpened… did not happen. Am I still happy to have purchased this game? YES! Will I enjoy this little 1990s J-RPG gem? Oh yeah. 2.5 stars out of 5. If cutscene videos are properly updated or use the Sega CD ones, then it will be a 4.5 out of 5 for me. Give this blast from the past a try, great for killing time waiting at dentist lobby or on a long flight! :)
Controller Support!
Makes it SO MUCH BETTER! One of my favorites to play now. Thank you!
Doesn’t work on iPhone 8plus
I just get a black screen and audio. Sounds like a cool story.
Like the game but…
I like the game but would love controller support. I have trouble playing with screen controls so it makes me reluctant to choose Vay when I could play Lunar which has controller.
Missed opportunity
Poor updated battle graphics and touch controls. Menu interface ruins the immersion. A basic port of the Sega CD version with better touch controls would’ve sufficed for $0.99. Lunar, Phantasy Star, and Shining Force offerings on iOS are a better way to experience classic Sega JRPGs.
Magic mislabeled
Overall, the game is decent. My only real gripe is magic is mislabeled. I thought that my casters were getting duplicate spells for some reason, but when I clicked on then they did other things with more mp cost. For example, Pottle had a second mend on his menu for 2 mp. If that is selected in combat, it makes the team escape combat. I really hate having to click spells to find out what they do and how much they cost. Second minor gripe, I had items that are for use in combat that either would not show up in the item menu or would not let me click them, such as devils spark
Unbelievable Support of a Sega CD classic!!
This was my very first purchase on my iPhone back in 2008! Not only is it updated but now works on my Apple TV and my silicon Mac and is continuously improved! Absolutely incredible! More companies should take this as an example!
Doesn’t Work on 2020 iPad Pro
So after creating a new file the game’s audio plays but the screen stays black, no visuals. I’ve tried running the game many times, updated iOS, still does the same thing. LIST THIS AS INCOMPATIBLE WITH 2020 IPAD PRO BEFORE PEOPLE WASTE THEIR MONEY
Greatness Awaits
If you like the game, this is a great way to play the game. Enjoy yourself.
Playa
The controls are horrible. Needs updating.
Classic needs a makeup
Good classic game but the developer could have updated the character’s portrait. Looks like pictures my 8 year old drew... lol. Added a story update saver so players know we’re to go. I had to leave the game for a couple of weeks and when I restarted the game, totally wasn’t sure where I was in the storyline. Little things like that would have made this classic more enjoyable.
Hooray For Vay!
I came across this game a few months ago, and just recently completed it. Great port of a classic game, with a wonderful storyline… and it looks amazing on Apple TV. Classic RPG at its finest!
Opening video gets skipped
I’m not sure if all the cut scenes will skip, but I don’t even feel like playing it to find out. The anime aspect of this game is something I loved and you rarely see anymore. For me, it’s unplayable until that is fixed.
Good game with some problems
The games super fun the only problem is I don’t get the video to play but the game works and the developers are still fixing bugs after a long time so I’m glad they are still improving
Decent game, worst controls im mobile gaming
I really want to give the game a chance, but i don see it happening with the terrible controls. Please add a joystiq or something instead of the really bad ones it has.
No cutscenes
I’ll give it 3 stars for now and a final rating once I’ve played through. The only real issue I have with the game is with the cutscenes. I can see them queue up but then the player closes and I’m back in the game. It skips it completely. I’m having to use YouTube to watch the cutscenes as I play. I’ve rebooted my phone. I’ve tried starting a new game. Same results. iPhone 11. iOS 13.3.1
Excellent control options
This is a pleasure to play on mobile—I thought I’d stick with the traditional on-screen digital analog stick, but the point-and-click navigation is really smooth and has been an easy way to play the game either one-handed or when I’m out and about and can’t use my bluetooth controller. I love playing old-school JRPG’s, and I’ve been enjoying the monster designs and the combat system in Vay. The company behind the game keeps adding quality of life updates too, so that’s always a plus. The original cut-scenes in the game are old but gold, as they say, and I recommend this game for anyone that loves adventure stories.
When equipment weapons or armor
When buy weapons or armor when there r in the first stot can’t equip it pls fix it
For a dollar
Totally worth it but the controls are bad.
Bad effort
Controls are awful. Needs dpad like Final Fantasy 3 on ios. No sound during movies. Screen does not rotate or flip to your orientation. Minor things that should of been fixed. For $.99, I will probably get my moneys worth, with some aggravation. Shame, would easily be a 5 star app with little effort.
I hate the controls
Great game but the controls are very irritating. Tap the screen for where you want the character to move to. It’s horrible... can we have a touch screen joystick please?
Stumbled upon this by accident
Thank you for the update, it’s amazing! For some reason I cannot fathom I was looking up old Working Designs games and noticed there was an iOS port of Vay. I owned, and I fact still own, the SegaCD version of this game. The control scheme is atrocious but I couldn't pass this game up for $0.99. Other than the fact that movement is highly annoying this is an amazing classic RPG.
Tile cutscene crush
Controls and overall game play are crap
Quite worth the money
The game is a classic RPG with some cut scenes to watch. The game is also long enough to play. Each character has its own magic set. The game also swaps out a few character along the story line. Those that left will leave forever, so watch out. The game has a bit of balance issue between physical and magical damage. Magic is the way to go all the way especially from mid to end game. Magical damage is much higher and no resistance to magic type whatsoever. Weapon with better effect against certain monster type are bugged and doesn't seem to be that effective. Gear that has "can prevent" isn't that good at all. Gear that reduce elemental damage is also worthless. The control is awkward and you could get stuck in certain places. One spot is on an air ship where the chest is next to the ladder. Luckily, there is another way to get to the same place. That's the reason I deduct 1 star due to this balance issue.
Needs an option for an on screen joy pad
It really really does, please please please, Edit...i checked back to see if you added a d-pad, and still nothing? Im not the only one from all I've read, i really want to play this game, lunar is one of my all time favs. And this loos great, i just cant get into tap and walk controls
Not awful, but needs some work.
This is a old school RPG, so if you like menu-based combat you may enjoy this game. There are a number of issues here, though. -The controls can be touchy. You'll often find yourself taking extra steps. Hardly game breaking, but it's a nuisance. -The combat is laughably easy. Yes, there's an option to make it more difficult (even then, it's still pretty easy), but the option is buried in the app settings and not within the game itself. -The story is... bad. There's an evil empire, and you gotta go to this town, and then this dungeon, and then this town, and then this dungeon, and so on. There's a good app in here somewhere, and it's fairly cheap which is nice, but the dull combat made me lose interest after a while. Unless you're an old school RPG diehard, pass.
Need more of these hits!
Would love to see Albert odyssey, shining the holy ark and lunar 2 eternal blue please!!!!! Such wonderful pieces of art should be able to be shared and played. Can we get some controller supports too😘
Too Slow, Poor UI
I hate to leave a bad review because I know how important good reviews are to an app’s success but I simply couldn’t play this game. Touching the location on the screen that you want your character to move to might have been a nice experiment for 1st gen touch screens but in practice it’s terrible. I might have been able to accept it if the character moved at more than a snail’s pace across the screen but alas he does.
Fun and nostalgic, but not perfect
Had a lot of fun playing this game, really took me back to the days of grinding through Final Fantasy games, which I think is a perfect platform for iOS. Got through the game pretty quickly and was able to level at a good pace without too much wandering (it's easy to power level at the end as there are a ton of encounters and all reap high exp - jumped 15 levels between the last castle and the final battle just trying to get there). Unlike most of these reviews I thought the controls were just fine for a touchscreen and wouldn't have been any better with a d-pad. It was a little frustrating the first few minutes, but once you get in to the game it because almost intuitive - not perfect but it definitely worked for me. Now the bad. Some of the cut scenes at the end didn't have audio, which is odd because the rest did. Had to look them up online to get the effect, which kinda sucked. The story didn't have the impact other RPGs have had, didn't really care when the party changed and some of these changes I think we're supposed to be poignant. No twists that really took me and no real need for exploring or secret areas to find either (to my knowledge), which is something I like in my games. However at $.99 this game was a steal - it fed all the cravings I had for a turned based RPG. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking to get an old school "fix."
Sound problems
Maybe this is a 5s problem, but there is no sound during the cut scenes. Also the controls are atrocious. Even an onscreen D-pad would be welcome. I only give it 2 stars due to my found memories of the sega cd version.
Make sure to check settings!
I knew when I was playing that the game felt very easy, and that the difficulty was probably adjusted from the Sega CD version...but it's only as I go to write the review now that I see that there were difficulty options available. They're hidden away in the "Settings" section/app of your iPhone. I could have been playing on "Hard"! Arghh! Other than that, a pure JRPG experience that was very welcome on the iPhone. The walking controls are finicky but you just have to be persistent. BTW, they also adjusted some other things: the party's battle graphics are anime style (though you can apparently choose to have the original ones), and the dialogue has been re-translated, sometimes with jokes current to 2008. It might tick off a purist, but overall, I enjoyed it.
This port is more than worth the money
I’d like games like this I love Jay RPG‘s the fact that this 90s JRPG is ported so well for such a good price on iOS a you can’t pass it down specially if you love RPG‘s and hand held RPG‘s this game brings back memories I have the originals I have a few ports of this game and this is A very good port I would highly recommend this game.
Fix controls. Need D-pad
Fix controls. Need D-pad
Decent
I bought this because I wanted to give the folks who made the awesome Lunar port more money. This game is fun and ported well. I really just want Eternal Blue.
Absolutely horrid control scheme
iPhone 3G v4.2.1 Classic RPG game made virtually unplayable by poor control layout. Movement and interactions are done by tapping. It's the omni-touch button of ambiguity. While it's easy enough to access exposed NPCs, the important vendors are utterly inaccessible. In fact double tapping on them consistently causes the player to move downwards. Repeated tappings upon the vendor, instead of causing the player to move back into proximity, only serves to drive the player farther away. A more dedicated control interface is necessary. Movement should have been done by the slightest tilt, and proximity interactions by touch. I'll see if it can't be beat without the ability to actually purchase anything, but doubtful.
In dire need of a D-pad
This game is pretty cool, but the control scheme needs to be changed
Bought it day one when the App Store launched
Bought it at App Store launch day in July 2008 when it was $4.99. No regrets! Great game. Love that I can change the names of the characters to the original ones from the Sega CD version by Working Designs. And change the sprites. Love hard mode as it’s unlocked after you beat the game once.
I'd love to review it but...
I'm not going to play until you make the audio actually play in cutscenes on iPhone 5's. C'mon guys!
Generic '90s RPG, but fun and funny
Can be a bit easy at times, but very enjoyable overall. Loved the myriad sexual and real world references throughout the game, hated the repetitious music (although tracks like Lorath Castle and Boss Battle are great). Worth playing.
Good game, Horrid controls
The controls are brutal. A virtual pad would up this game's rating immensely. In it's current form it's beyond frustrating.
Wonderful old-fashioned RPG
I've been playing this game for about 10 hrs by now, and it is very hard to put down. For those of us who remember the golden age of SNES RPGs (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy) this is a great game, with many hours of gameplay to offer. It has all the hallmarks of a classic RPG, and I recommend it heartily.
great!!!
great!!
Graphics inconsistent
The backgrounds aren't the same as the sprites-pretty big letdown
I own both sega cd and iPhone
I own both versions of the game, it's a great port for a phone.
I once liked it... almost done
The more I play it, the less I like it. Pros: Story line, classic RPG graphics, variety of spells/items, touch to move. Cons: No way to compare items from the shop, need to exit, etc... No quick way to exit menu, Ummm... modern day talk/jokes in a classic RPG? ruins the 'classic' fee.... Hard mode just means you gain less experience and spells cost 3x as much. Battle system: TONE DOWN THE RANDOM BATTLES?!? Like take out 70% of the random battles!? Sometimes I'll hit 4 random battles and only move about 10 squares. The battles soon get tiring and boring and tedious....... the more I play the game *cough have random battles* the less I like it. Battles usually consist of one spell and you kill everyone.
Not bad
Good time waster. The Hardcore mode is rather challenging but because I felt like leveling up, I switched to easy. For skilled gamers, easy provides zero challenge. For beginners, it is also very easy. Storyline is linear. There is no sidequests of any kind. Controls are frustrating when moving in tight areas, otherwise fine. Cutscenes are rather LQ. It has the JRPG feel to it, but not the appeal, although it will be a while before something of near console quality can be put out.
