Great app, worth the $$
I think this is a great app for korean learners who are advanced beginners on up. I wouldn't recommend it for true beginners. But once one has a basic vocabulary and some basic grammar structures down, it's awesome. I have worked up from level one to level five. Five more levels to go! The quality of the stories is good and I think they are written by human beings. There's high-quality voice actors also. Highly recommend!!
Huh?
Why am I “Level 1” when all my answers are correct? 😅
Great but bigger size fonts please
I am liking the content and how the story flows. But the hardest part for me is how small the print size is. I don’t see an option to make it larger. Can that be an option?
Expensive and buggy
First if all the content is great, and there is a LOT of it. To be honest I’d prefer to be able to buy a physical book. The app regularly updates, logging you out when it does so. * This is frustrating for people like me who have limited time. Text size is often way too small and doesn’t scale along with iphones accessability settings. A recent update changed the word appearing in bold to underlined. This is a terrible design choice and makes somewords really difficult to read. *A recent update has broken the ability to sign in with google. Now I can’t access the content I’ve paid for. Extremely frustrating. Even though I live in Korea, my apple store is UK so this app is extremely expensive - almost 200,000won. You need to do better if you want to keep my subscription.
Great Potential
This is really great, but people are tired of looking at their tiny screens on their phone. not sure if there’s an iPad app version, I couldn’t find one. Please make an iPad version of the app!

Vocabulary
This could be an amazing app. However, it needs a better way to study vocabulary. One should be able to make more vocab study sets than just mastered and learning as well as smaller study sets.
Issues
Very user unfriendly app. Poor and slow technical support
…
This is a really good app if your more advanced but for a beginner who only knows Hangul and sentence structures this is impossible
Really good and getting better!
I’m a big fan of this app, I use it daily. Each improvement has been really helpful. Definitely trending upwards! One feature I would love would be a background player. It’d be really helpful to be able to walk around and listen to the stories over and over again. Keep up the good work!
Buggy Playback
The app has a playback feature to listen to Korean stories, but it only plays the first sentence or two and then jumps to the next story. This would be a great feature, but has been a persistent bug.
Love this!
I love this app. I use it everyday. Trying to teach myself Korean is definitely hard and I struggle, but this app helps me through it and keeps me motivated to never quit. My only complaint is, that after an update a few months ago, if you don't remember to click "mark as read" after you finish a story, it doesn't log in the app as a day completed. That is the only critique I have as of right now.
Great app! But not helpful at all!
Ok! This app only Damages you! And your Korean learning! First off: It needs more English! Second:Is it teaching you the right Korean sentence structure in these Korean story sentences? No! At least it teaches you some new words!🌟 And does it teach you Grammer Points! At least some?: No! At least knowing some grammer points are important and no one talks about them or teaches them! so annoying!!😞🤧 I had to dig all across YouTube to learn! (ANYWAYY!!) My third Complaint: The purchase! A lot/some of us are broke! And I feel like everything alot of things are a ridiculous purchase and it forces you! To me I think it’ll confuse you more in your Korean sentences which is important Memorizing Korean Sentences is very overwhelming to memorize..so I sometimes wish their was a Korean sentence app where you can play it and slowly get used to Korean Sentences! (Yea I’m gonna also venting about my stressful Korean learning) But good things: It makes you get used to the Korean pronunciation And teaches you new words in fun ways It makes you listen to Korean stories which is helpful It has a few complications but it’s a good app but I recommend to Not fully rely on it! Ok bye Pookies 😘👹✌🏽✌🏽
Not For Beginners
Nice app but too much too fast for beginners.
Me encanta!!
Gracias por hacer una aplicación para practicar la comprensión de lectura.
Not yet thought through
In my opinion, the app is not yet thought through content, conception and UX wise. I love though that the texts are read by a human and a native Korean. Regarding the price point: the price point is very high compared to other highly developed and advanced apps. On top, the app hasn’t been working for two days now on my end. I‘m optimistic the app will improve over time and that I‘ll be updating my review. This kind of app is actually what is missing on the market. Update: it‘s been quite some time I wrote the review and decided to give the app another try. The price gas come down as I expected but realised how awful the app still is. Not thought through from a UX point and super boring. All the feedback we have provided, don’t see any of them considered.
Effective learning, but details
The system that lets you see the definition of a word is finicky, and what you are allowed to see the definition of is not consistent with the bolded words.
Much to be improved
The concept is good but the final product is still unpolished. A few things make it so such as spelling errors and also the definition of words. Many Korean words have multiple meanings and instead of defining the word in context of the story, some stories just use the most common definition. I’ve noticed quite a lot of spelling errors in the English definition as well. Also there’s no way for me to search for a word I’ve learned previously so I can refresh my memory and re-read the story. I’m not about to scroll through god knows how many stories to find it so I just give up. Another thing that irks me is if you won’t let me copy and paste the stories for me to translate (I understand due to copyright issues), at least have the translated version available so I can check if my understanding of the story is correct. And the selected learning words in each story is heavily focused on vocabulary. Some grammar would be good. Finally, the stories are mostly entertaining, original, and quite relevant to current times. Just need some extras to help the learning process. I don’t mind paying the steep price but it has to be worth it. It isn’t yet.
Good but some issues
I think this app has a lot to offer but it could be better, especially considering the price. The quiz section for vocab is confusing - I see other reviews saying once they get a word right 3 times, it is marked as memorized. My quiz doesn’t have any areas to choose anything (I’m wondering if it was multiple choice before or something?), it just asks me if I’m familiar with the word or not, no way to input anything. It would be nice to have the option to have to spell the word out from your keyboard to help with active recall. Additionally, one of the stories has a voice over that is broken at the moment (치킨은 내 사랑 2). I like to listen to the stories multiple times for repetition and just use the playlist function, but because that story is broken I have to skip it and then choose the next story which is really inconvenient for when I’m doing housework and listening at the same time. I hesitated between 3 or 4 stars but did factor in the cost vs functionality. The content is very good, the stories are engaging and they do a great job with repetition of grammar and vocab. But ultimately the broken story voice over is what moved this down to 3 for me, as the whole point of this is to be able to repeatedly engage with the content. Otherwise I would still rate this as a solid 4 because I think they could make the vocab/review section more engaging.
Perfect missing piece to my studying
I was looking for an app JUST like this where I can practice my reading skills while learning vocabulary. This app has it all. The stories are actually interesting and I really enjoy the podcast feature that allows you to listen to the stories you’ve completed! It helps a lot with listening practice. If you want to focus more on reading, understanding and comprehension, this app is 100% worth the price.
Thumbsdown for no trial
How about giving potential customers a taste before asking for signup? I don’t like to hand over my personal info or money before even knowing what the learning experience looks like.
I hate the quizzes. Otherwise good if expensive.
The stories are cute. Personally I like full length books and I would rather they published a full length novel or something similar. Every time a story ends I have to motivate myself to start a new one. It it were a novel I would already know and care about the characters and cliff hangers would make me want to read more. But many people like this short story format so maybe it’s good for you. The audio is good but they speak so slowly you have to speed it up and it makes you speed it up every time instead of remembering what speed you used for the last story. I hate the quizzes. I hate the quizzes. I hate the quizzes. I hate the quizzes. I hate the quizzes. I hate the quizzes. I hate the quizzes. I hate the quizzes.
Pretty design but flawed app
I have a subscription to this program already through their website but the app is not able to sync up any information from my other account.
Great potential
I’ve been looking for an app like this. I like how it shows you vocab, has real people reading the stories, adjustable speeds and different levels. I do have some issues. First and most important, it is waaaaay too expensive. $17 a month is crazy for an app like this. It would be nice to have an available translation of the stories too. I also wish I could look up the meaning of any word, not just selected ones. One thing that really annoyed me was the fact that my 7 day free trial turned into a 1 day free trial. I was really mad about that.
As expected- Amazing!!!
Exceeded my expectations once again ttmik♥️
Too expensive
The app is pretty good, however it's way too expensive. Could also have been a one time purchase. Will be deleting app and getting stories and articles from elsewhere.
Solid but can be better
The articles and stories are pretty solid. The audio is great. Has transcripts which new words are highlighted and can be added to a study deck. My largest issue is that the vocabulary study deck is just whether you know the word or not. I have to input the words into anki to actually memorize them. If TTMIK can include a memory recognition feature like anki— it would level up the app
Good idea - needs improvement
I concur with a prior review that there should be the option to view a translation of the series/article after the quiz. I think there needs to be some major work on the apps use of “spaced repetition.” Because it’s not really spaced repetition as is. From what I can tell, as soon as one correctly gets it three times, it’s memorized, which simply isn’t true. Additionally, the first set of words I added, which was about 7, allowed me to do the Flashcards back to back. So, I got all the words in my set correctly three times in a row that are now “memorized” but they aren’t. Also, I can’t even see a list of words that I’ve “memorized”. Memrise has a much better spaced repetition system fleshed out for an app. Lastly, there should be a function where I can add other words to my vocab set that I don’t know but isn’t flagged as one of the vocabulary words for that series or article. I was really hoping for more out of ttmik stories, but it’s not something I’m willing to subscribe to without some hefty upgrades.
Great content, sub-par vocab review
After really benefitting from similar reading apps for learning Chinese and Japanese, I’d been looking around for ages for good graded reading material for Korean. I was delighted when I learned about the TTMIK Stories app and downloaded it immediately. The quality of text and recordings is very high, and I enjoyed doing a few stories/articles per day during the free trial period. However, when it came to reviewing new vocabulary from the stories I read, I was disappointed. Rather than offering a spaced repetition algorithm (which a lot of research suggests is the gold standard for moving vocab from short-term to long-term memory), the app has users review ALL chosen vocab during a review session. While users can manually remove a word from the review list when they feel they know it, it doesn’t seem to pop up again for long-term retention. Also, rather than asking how well you know the word upon revealing the answer, each flash card instead displays two English translations of the term and asks the user to pick the correct one. This was generally too easy and did not force me to actively recall in the way an Anki deck might. I’m really hoping the vocab review system gets an update, as that would probably convince me to subscribe.
Exceptional resource for learning Korean
I am new to the wonderful journey of learning Korean, and TTMIK has been an extremely helpful resource. Their TTMIK Stories app is a truly wonderful app. It includes many different levels so it is appropriate for learners from beginner to advanced which is great. Getting to hear the native speakers read the stories and articles helps so much shadowing/practicing, and the vocab review, with vocab in the context of a sentence/line of dialogue, is very helpful. The stories and articles are also really interesting in and of themselves, which makes me really love and often return to the app, even beyond what it takes to keep my reading streak going. :) I was hesitant to pay for a subscription at first because I tend to subscribe to things but then not use them enough to warrant the cost, but this is not the case with this app at all. It is absolutely worth the very reasonable investment. My Korean has improved as a direct result of this app alone, and I would recommend it to all Korean learners.
Incorrect grammar?
I tried giving the app a second chance after it kinda disappointing me the first time but i wanted to like it. although it has bugs it's still not horrible. But I came across a story in level 5 where the sentence said "가족들이 찾기 곳에 두길 잘했다고 생각했다“ I initially didn't understand it , so I went to AI for help and it told me it was incorrect grammar AI can be wrong sometimes so I asked three of my Korean friends. Was this sentence natural or even grammatically correct, they all said no and said they'd change to "찾을 수 있는 곳에" now i'm skeptical if i should continue reading using this app if they're giving me incorrect grammar.
Praise and Idea for Developers
I’m really enjoying using this app! The stories are a nice length because even when I’m very tired after working all day I still feel motivated to complete my daily learning and it’s not overwhelming. It’s nice that the new vocabulary is repeated in multiple stories to give you different examples of its use. The stories are entertaining while still teaching vocabulary and grammar that I can actually use in daily conversation. Is it possible to add a feature where we can search a word present in the stories and then get a list of all the sentences it appears in? (For example, I’m learning the word 유명하다 and I’d like to see all the sentences it appears in one one place.) Even if the story the word is used in in later levels is “locked” until I progress further, it would be nice to see the sentences. There is also one small issue with the app that can make navigating a little bit annoying. If I go back to a previous level to review old stories (through the book icon, not the headphones icon so that I can click on vocab as needed) when I exit that story it takes me out of the level I’m trying to review and puts me automatically back into the later level. (I mean if I was reviewing a story in level 1, when I exit the story the app automatically puts me back in the Level 2 content list). So I have to backtrack to continue reviewing the various chapters of old stories. Can this be fixed or is there a way to turn this feature off that I’m missing?
too expensive for what it offers
I enjoy this app, I love the fact that the stories and articles are tailored for each level and the app is easy to navigate. I have been a ttmik subscriber for a while now and was very excited when I saw that they launched this reading app BUT was somewhat surprised to see the price for it! I mean, it’s not cheap (to put it nicely). I already pay a hefty price for the ttmik membership so this is not what I expected (I don’t have a problem to pay for the app, but the price is honestly waaay to high). Also there are other apps out there that are better in my opinion and that you can also use offline; so it was a bummer to see that ttmik stories doesn’t work offline-I travel a lot by plane and thought I could use the app during this time, but surprise surprise..Also the quiz mode needs some improvement. I understand this is still the early stages of this app, but if I am paying this amount of money for it, well I expect it to be way better. As for now, it is not worth the money.
Needs some polish
Overall, the app has an impressive number of stories that someone came up with with lots of vocabulary words to learn. That already shows a lot of work and thought that has gone into the korean material itself. My feedback is more on the application interface. Some things that can be improved: - Is there a place to submit feedback? Other than in the review? - Adding vocabulary feels tedious. I click on the word to see the definition, then I have to click another button to add it to my vocab list. I wouldn't have clicked on the word if I didn't want to add it to the list. But to add a vocab word takes 3 clicks then I can go back to sentence comprehension. But doing this up to 10 times per story feels like it could be smoother. - There's no feedback for answering questions for quizzes. I either get the question right or wrong, but I have no idea what I got right or wrong. Most of the time I don't know every word. That's to be expected when reading, but when taking the quiz, it's a lot of unexpected friction to look up vocab that I don't know and then figure out for myself why I got a question wrong. I can't make improvements if I don't know what I got wrong. If the question is a yes/no question, then change the statement so that it is true. There should be someway to know if I got the answer wrong because I didn't understand the question, or because I didn't understand the story. This is an UI/UX issue that I don't know the answer too, but users should learn something even when they get the answer wrong. - This is an extra since I know it requires even more material work but is there a way to add a translation of the story before trying to read/listen the korean story? Perhaps if a user wants to see it before they read the story but make it so that they can't go back to it or that a user can only see the korean story during the quizzes. You can take or leave this point though since it's more a pedagogy suggestion even though I am myself not a teacher, only a student.
Excellent Stories - Really Accelerated My Learning
400+ story read update: Really accelerating my learning in every day life scenarios. I already had read several YA novels in Korean before picking up TTMIK stories and still am finding the app worth every dollar. Killer hidden feature of this app is the ability to reuse the reading lessons as a listening playlist while doing chores. It is the best listening practice I’ve found anywhere online. Sadly I didn’t find out about this feature for my first 300 stories but am now using it every day and making huge progress in my listening abilities.
Really wanted to love it :(
I’m the exact right demographic for this app (intermediate learner studying for topik and I love using apps to study in free moments) but even I can’t get past the drawbacks. It’s really very expensive, especially when I’m already paying for the normal TTMIK subscription. And from the get go the app has issues - no back button on the sign in page, doesn’t recognise my login details even though they work fine on the ttmik website. I’m definitely not going to pay a huge fee for an app with bugs. It’s honestly a real shame because I would’ve loved an app like this that worked and wasn’t so expensive or was included in the main ttmik subscription. Edit: Not only was I unable to login, I was apparently signed up for the free trial without my knowledge. Just received an email to say the trial is almost over, but I wasn’t able to use the free trial and presumably won’t be able to get another one in the future when the bugs are worked out. Overall not a great experience. :/
Content is great. App needs work. $10 a month is too much.
The content is some of the best audio and text leveled immersion out there. Professional voice actors reading is better than AI or even the usual TTMIK teacher voices. I would pay a few months at $5 a month, but $10 is too much for what this app offers. I’ll move on after one month. The app has a couple of issues I’m frustrated with. 1. It asks me to turn on notifications TWO times, EVERY time I open the app. I do not want notifications. I want to say no once, and my decision be respected. 2. A bug where it keeps saying that the next chapter is 6/10, when I’m already on 7, 8, or 9/10. So I have to exit the story and manually pick the chapter I’m actually supposed to be on. Thank you!
Great application, disproportionate price plan
The app is really great and I was ready to pay for it. But when I saw the price plan I was shocked. Even if you are a subscriber of the TTMIK website, you don’t even have access to this app. I think you need to review your prices cause it’s a great app but no one wants to be robbed just to an extra application, even though it’s really great and we can see the hard work behind it.
Nice app but needs English translations
Love what TTMIK usually puts out, lessons, videos, podcasts etc. have subscribed and learned a ton. I’m level 5 or 6 depending on what day I take their test. But for this app the stories have too much vocab and regular use of at-level grammar that makes doing the quizzes more like guesswork. Totally appreciate the value of working without translations and do it all the time to advance. But ultimately after doing the exercises the translations should be available to check understanding. If translations were available —post quiz perhaps, it would be worth the money. But at this price point an app without the dialogues translated is simply not worth it. The app is stable and not buggy.
So helpful!
This has been so helpful with listening and reading Korean. You can read along to understand the vocabulary but then just listen to test your listing skills. It has really helped me build my vocabulary.
Too
Expensive
Enjoyable, Most of the Time
I love the app, and especially enjoy the stories. I think being able to build a reading habit with a good interface, high quality voice acting, and an abundance of content is wonderful. Please, though, make one small change. Any reading app worth its salt has a dark theme. I find myself opening this app at night to read for a bit and immediately need to turn it off due to the brightness. Dark mode, please!
improvements
I wish we could translate every word and add a dark theme mode for our eyes for god sake
Great material, bad narration
The story content is amazing and exactly what I’d want from a graded reader—however, the voices that read the stories sound robotic (if not AI generated). Since it is great to have a native speaker “read aloud” as you’re learning, the app would massively benefit from less robotic, more natural recordings in the style of the TTMIK Iyagi podcasts. Update: It’s only the early stories that sound like that, the later ones sound quite natural, changed to 5 stars :-)
I wish it had translation
I like this app, just wish there was an option to look up words or at least what the full sentence meaning is. It is taking me a long time to go through every single word I know. For example, LingQ does this. It would benefit the absolute beginners and retain more people if you added this feature. Thanks!
Price and no dark mode
I understand you have your reasons but this app is very overpriced, especially if your level is too high or too low to be able to read everything. Also dark mode would be extremely helpful. Thank you
