OKO
Good morning Oko team Ulises here Thank you for bringing back the Oko application available for free I am going to use this within my orientation and mobility training soon. Thank you so so much for bringing it back for free. Totally appreciate it. That’s why I’m giving this application a total of five stars. Thank you very very much for bringing it back for free Sincerely, Ulises a proud Oko user and customer
Have to pay
Having to pay for something like this is absurd. I have no other words couldn't even use it. There is no free option at all you have to pay to cross the street safely.
Great until it wasn’t
It was amazing a free app that let me cross streats safely. Oh wait an update comes and now instead of an optional donation to help the team make Oko. It’s not required to pay a subscription to use Oko. I think it’s cruel that we are now charging blind people to have the ability to cross the street safely. Oko I hope someone sues you for this
OKO review it is a great
OK hults to know when the lights have changed it is a great app
Disappointed in OKO’s new paywall.
I’m DeafBlind and rely on tools to help me navigate safely. Last time I used OKO, it was free and helped me know when it was safe to cross the street. Today, I was at a busy intersection with no accessible pedestrian signal (no APS), and I didn’t have my glasses, so I couldn’t see the walk sign across the street. I opened OKO, expecting it to work like before—but now it requires a paid subscription just to use the basic crossing-detection feature. On a busy street, that’s incredibly frustrating and even dangerous. This is supposed to be an accessibility app. Putting a critical safety feature behind a paywall feels wrong. I had to fall back on using my camera zoom just to try and see the signal. Accessibility should never come with a price tag—especially when safety is on the line.
Cognito
Scary, spooky hilarious
Reason for two star
Two star After reinstalling the Oko app, I clicked on an annual membership and accidentally closed the app. Once I reopen the app. I was notified that this app is no longer available in my region?? I was one of the beta testers my buddy said it’s been really good to him. He happens to live in the same area that I do so now I’m a little confused why I am unable to use the app that I just subscribed for? I currently live in Ontario Canada. It shows up in my App Store. I’m able to install it and like I said open once closed open again no longer available. Would like to have this issue fixed before I cancel my subscription.
Some concerns
I originally downloaded this app before it was a monthly or yearly subscription. Like others I find it disappointing that it is now subscription based for something that was free. I also find it frustrating to use as it doesn’t lock the camera on the walk sign and as you walk it loses what it sees from natural normal movements. It also seems inconsistent at lights. I’ve crossed a couple lights 2 it handled as best as it could considering the previously stated locking issues, then I crossed at a major intersection and it completely failed and didn’t notify me when I could walk at all it just went silent. Thankfully I had other support but for something I am paying to use this should not be an issue what so ever. The inconsistencies are concerning at best.
I DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!
THIS APP WILL SAVE LIVES! I use moved to a large city for the first time in my life. With this app,, I can cross streets confidently even though blind. I can pair it with my hearing aids, but I want people to hear it so they don’t try to take me by the arm to “help” me! I still have to rely on hearing for places that don’t have crossing signals, but everywhere I go pretty much has them if there is a lot of traffic. I would be afraid to cross without this app! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Subscription
Last year or two when I used this app it used to not give me subscription in order to use this app for pedestrian signal crossing and now it's requiring me to have a subscription in order to use this app and I really don't want a subscription in order to use this app as it's too expensive for me I would rather use this app without subscription.
Cannot sign into Apple on your application. One button is unlabelled in the search results/map part.
To whom it may concern, I'm having a significant issue with your application. After signing out of Apple to verify my password, I'm unable to sign back in. When I double tap the "Continue with Apple" button, nothing happens, and the only functional button is "Not Now." I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, rebooting my phone, and submitting feedback, but the issue persists. Additionally, I found an unlabelled button when searching for places, which caused confusion. Please address these issues and consider labelling buttons for better accessibility.
Delusions of grandeur with subscriptions
This app is convenient, but not essential. In Jan ‘25 it just recently changed to a subscription model. However I can’t find any information about pricing on their website or in their app description. In any event, the app was good, But certainly not worth a subscription model. You guys have to realize it’s the kiss of death to offer subscriptions in this community. If you can’t find grants or other ways to fund your app, give up and put it up on GitHub as open source and move on to something else. Hope you are ready to be roasted on all the podcasts out there. And I don’t buy your model needs to be updated frequently. Traffic signals don’t change in the United States regularly because of the expense, the AI model is good enough for now. Sorry you don’t understand that having an app like this is not essential it’s a convenience and your subscription is simply not worth it. Before you run out of funds and turn off the lights for the last time, I hope you do make it open sore so others can contribute to the work you started.
Charging for an app that is still not fixed.
I do not mind paying for an app like this. However, if you were going to charge for it, all features should work. Whenever I enter an address in the maps section, and then hit start, the app crashes 100% of the time, without exception. I hope the developer can and will fix this issue.
support from china
good ai model, but there are a new one from china and free which called pedestrian light 红绿灯
Now subscription model, even for trainers
If there could be at least a free version for trainers like BlindSquare does, then maybe I can recommend this app. Since I no longer have functionality since it's no longer free, I won't be showing my clients.
Hard to use in daylight
The app is really difficult to use outdoors in daylight conditions. Because of the daylight reflection on my iPhone screen, I am not able to read anything on the screen. This means I have to set my destination before I leave the house for the building, or before I leave any place where I am able to read the screen, select my destination, press, go and listen for the audio cues about where to turn and so on. I have not found a way to initiate vocal input to the Oko app. It would be really nice to be able to say things like “change destination “, or “where am I?“ It is difficult to navigate the Oko app itself, even in the best of conditions. I have not found a obvious way to go to the home screen, for example. The concept of Oko is really great, and I wish the development team had more resources to make significant improvements to the app. It seems one must have fairly good useful vision to successfully use the Oko app.
Oko, is ok.
The OKO app was once an innovative and essential tool for blind and visually impaired individuals. Its core focus helping users cross streets safely with reliable AI was groundbreaking. It simplified a critical aspect of independent travel, and the five-star reviews from its earlier days reflect just how effective it was at meeting this need. Unfortunately, as the app has expanded its feature set, it has lost sight of what made it great. While apps like GoodMaps Outdoors and VoiceVista excel in navigation, OKO now struggles to keep up in this space, becoming a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. The new features, while perhaps well-intentioned, dilute the app’s primary purpose and compromise its reliability. Adding to this disappointment is the introduction of a subscription model. For a once simple and effective tool, the cost is unjustifiable, especially given its diminished value in comparison to free or more robust alternatives. It feels like an unnecessary expense for many in the visually impaired community, myself included. I truly hope the developers reevaluate their approach and refocus on OKO’s original strengths. Until then, I cannot recommend this app as an essential, but more of a nice to have
Most useful app on my phone.
As a visually impaired New Yorker I use this app daily to safely navigate the city. I don’t know how I’d get around without it
$5/month too expensive
There are other strategies for crossing streets that don’t incur a monthly fee. I might have paid a one time fee, but not every month or year, no thanks.
This app will not work
There’s something wrong with this app. It will not work on iOS 16.7.8., And when I look in the compatibility section of this app on the App Store, it says it’ll work with this iPhone.
it used to be good.
It's clearly made by sided people who think they know what blind people are going to find useful. The only reason I'm not giving this a 1 out of 5 is because if you get lucky and can even find the pedestrian signal alert button on screen amidst some sprawling map of all the roads in your entire town, then it might prove useful. But beyond that the app just keeps getting worse with every new bell and whistle added. Hopefully somebody else develops a pedestrian signal alert app that can "keep it simple stupid."
$50???
The app works great. However, it is UNACCEPTABLE to charge $50 when it was free last week. Charging that much for an app who’s user base has a %70 unemployment rate is unconscionable. Please fix this now!
Worth the Cost of I had to Pay
I got the app before it got the app purchase update and it has come a long way. Even before it had maps integrated it was amazing. It’s very accurate and simple to use. Very clear and has helped me safely cross streets at the right time. But if I had to buy it now, I definitely would and I highly recommend it. I will say, because of the maps, it eats battery life like nothing else and for some reason I think the directs are always for driving and not walking which needs to be fixed. I use Apple Maps instead, so if that can get fixed, I’d say it’s perfect then.
Nope.
I teach O&M to school-aged students, and I can no longer offer this app to them since they’d need to pay. Monthly. The app honestly did not work consistently even before the subscription model. Now, seeing other reviews that the app still does not work even after paying for it, it’s sad to realize the makers are just trying to get money from a community that wants to increase accessibility for crossing the dang street. Messed. Up.
$50? Really?
I just downloaded your app for free a few months ago. It’s a shame that you’re doing this to people who for the most part cannot afford it! This is too valuable a resource! I am an instructor at a rehab facility and wanted to recommend this app but most of my clients cannot afford it at this time. Please fix this!
This app is so advanced
I find this app very amazing. I’m never going to delete it ever under any circumstances. however, I find it hard to sign in or create an account because I have never created an account before for this app. I’m unsure how and that is the only issue. I feel that all blind people should download this app because of the accessibility and it’s the most useful thing I have ever come across aside from another app that I use.
This was a potentially useful app until bloat and subscriptions came.
This app was recommended to me in August 2024 by my white cane trainer from the Virginia Department for the blind and visually impaired. It seemed to provide a decent functionality for crosswalk walk/don’t walk signals. I never got to test it in the challenging lighting conditions that gave me problems. When I went to experiment with it to see if it could handle Austrian signals, I find that it has moved from being free to a SUBSCRIPTION model. If the developer needed to make moat for development. they could have done a flat purchase price. Instead they want to continually pick the pockets of blind and visually impaired people who already face much additional cost and inconvenience in life. Perhaps if the developers had stuck to the crosswalk capability, they wouldn’t be facing development costs for the additional bloat. The awards this app garner and many positive reviews came before their switch to SUBSCRIPTION and would not have been received with this model. Doubtless, based on other negative reviews, the developer will spend time and money on making a response, further increasing their “need” for a SUBSCRIPTION model.
Great app and quite useful
i’ve been using this app for quite some time and even had a mobility instructor approach me in the field to kind of see it in action that was quite fun
No longer works as a simple accessible pedestrian signal
UPDATE: This is sadly no longer a usable app for me, now that navigation features have been added that prevent me from using it as a pedestrian crosswalk signal. Now when the app opens it is in a map view prompting you to enter a destination. It WILL NOT FUNCTION AS A PEDESTRIAN SIGNAL until you activate that feature. If you are a low vision user, it’s not prominent or obvious. If you are a VoiceOver user, good luck trying to get there while at a noisy intersection. I can’t open the app in advance because it drains battery really fast. I previously had given this app a 5 star review. The developers had solicited the review, but it was an honest one. I’ll leave it below for reference of how great the app used to be, and I’m still giving it 2 stars in the hopes that it might become usable again someday. PREVIOUS REVIEW: More reliable and easy to use than an APS. I’ve been so impressed with this app! It’s so easy to use even when the environment is too loud to hear VoiceOver speech — I can just say “Hey Siri, open OKO” and it immediately jumps into action with haptics and sounds giving me my own accessible pedestrian signal. I love the haptics because I can still get the crosswalk signal information while simultaneously focusing on the traffic sounds. It also saves me time because (1) I can get the visible pedestrian signal status as I’m approaching the intersection and (2) if I want to cross kitty corner and don’t have the walk signal in front of me I can quickly turn my phone to check if I already have the walk signal to cross in the other direction. It has given me a lot more confidence and independence navigating my city after vision loss and makes crossing the street much more analogous to how I could when I was fully-sighted.
Is there an Android version of this navigation software? How do I download it?
Is there an Android version of this navigation software? How do I download it?
Pretty Stupid Ad like the other guy said
No point of subscription, even if it was the best map app i still wouldn’t pay for a subscription. And lack of features…. You think with AI there would be more
I feel so much safer now
This app was recommended to me by my mobility trainer after a really scary intersection, crossing in the middle of a big city with a crosswalk that did not make any sound when it was time to cross. I love having this when I have to cross intersections that are not disability friendly. My only complaint is that different lighting situations are not reliable, and if there are more than a few lanes, the app sometimes just continuously says it’s not safe to Cross? instead of simply telling me that it’s not workin
Does not work at all!
This app is still under development and does not work in the states of California or Arizona and Nevada you will not be able to get directions to and from anywhere as the app literally says maps is unavailable in every city that I’ve traveled through this app needs a major overhaul to make it as great and ambitious as the fake reviewers claim they get I can honestly say from trying to use this app it’s a complete waste of your space on your personal devices instead use your preferred navigation app this app will not work for you as much as you see the pictures of the app they are completely A.I Generated pictures.
The Best Ever
You will regret not putting this amazing app on your devices. Way better than any competitor, try it for yourself
Not inclusive
So pedestrians don’t have to pay to use APS, but you are making blind people pay to use them? Way to extort the disabled!
Awesome
Love the Oko app it works really great for my needs especially at traffic lights. It’s awesome that it’s now here in Canada. Love it. Keep up the awesome work.
Would Absolutely Recommend
As a person with Albinism with 20/200 vision, I love this app. Moving into a city downtown area is intimidating in itself, but this app really helps.
Was great until decide to profit off of someone’s disability
Use to love this app a lot, it’s very unique and provided a layer of security to know the traffic signal was matching up with how traffic was moving. I was in the middle of my route about to use the app at a crosswalk when I discovered it now costed money to use. No warning of anything. I would pay a one time fee but a subscription is not worth it.
