What people like
- Great for learning value structure
- Developer is very responsive
- Better than Photoshop for this
- Helps beginners see clearly
What they complain about
- Free version was removed after update
- Confusing interface and unclear icons
- No longer free to use
Wonderful app for artists.
I use Value Study in designing my multi-block linocut prints. Shane, the developer has created an extremely useful tool, so much better than posterizing in other apps. And he is extremely responsive in adjusting to meet my needs as an artist.
No optimizada para iPhone
Los bordes se cortan, en iPad no, pero en iPhone sí, la interfaz no está bien adaptada
Good Value Study ap
Really like the app as long as it’s on no simplification. If I use the simplification part of the app, it’s very distorted. Without the simplification on it is a great app
Too complicated
This app may be good for someone who is a tech wizard, but I’m an artist—this just confused me.
A Creator who Cares
This is an excellent app for artists and photographers—it’s helped my paintings immensely, making compositional design much clearer and easier. I’ll add that I encountered a minor problem with live view crashes, I messaged the creator, and within a couple of weeks he fixed it—and emailed me personally to let me know. That kind of dedication is worth five stars in itself.
Not user friendly
I can't figure out how to make this app do notan images. Wish I hadn't bought it
Small issue was sorted out very quickly!
I had an initial glitch getting started but Shane took care of it quickly and I am more than satisfied. An absolute pleasure to work with. Over and above customer service.
Repurchase?
I already purchased this app and now I’m being asked to purchase it again. Is there a reason?
Perfect app for learning
I’ve found this app to be wonderful as a learning assistant. The value decomposition is a crucial tool for learning how to see what matters in a photo, and you can easily change how many values to decompose an image into. The second feature I find so helpful is the grid option. I also like that that secondary grid is diagonal (a feature I haven’t seen anywhere else), which helps you avoid confusion with the major grid axis.
How can you justify and Subscription?
This is a tool. Not a service. Asking for a reoccurring fee is ludicrous when you can use a free version of photoshop to get the same results. The day we start paying a yearly fee for hammers and screwdrivers is the day I go out to a dock, watch the sunset with a bottle of wine, and empty my brains into the crystal clear water.
Needs an information section
Like the app so far excited to use it more, but i had to search the internet for descriptions of what the heck all my icons were at the bottom of the screen. And also a small explanation of how to read the value scales because the green highlight threw me for a bit of a loop. as a amateur looking to expand my art skills this app is going to be super helpful but a “how to”/ tool description section would helpful.
Great for adult learners
I require this app from my students. Value study is not taught in many art classes. It is difficult to get students to see value in a colorful work of art. This app has given many of my students that “ Ah ha” moment.
Useless without paying
You can only use with supplied reference images unless you pay.
Almost perfect
This is a great app which does one thing and does it well. If you need a image split into a fixed set of values (and I do) it is much easier to use this app than messing around with a desktop application like Gimp or Photoshop. I have one suggestion: Include some ability to tweak the classification of values. In my current painting, it put too much down in the darkest three values. For example: A pixel with value 100/255 was classified as level 3/9. It would be good to be tweak that up to 4 or 5.
The BESTEST
Just starting out with painting and this app is fantastic
No funciona
Funcionaba bien pero se ha quedado parada y no consigo entrar
Love this app!
It makes reference photos so much simpler to recreate. Definitely an app in every artists tool kit
My “go to” tool
Thanks for your thoughtful sharing of this app. I is my “go to” tool when I’m in the design process of creating my paintings. I was easy to learn and now easy to use. I’ve been using this app for years and it is a valuable tool saving me time and often allowing me to understand my work better.
not free
i've been using this app for YEARS- for FREE!!!! just updated and now i have to pay!! nope. there are other apps, which are actually better, that ARE free. use those instead.
useful, quick, simple
A great aid to analysing your art work
Fun and useful
I am still mostly a beginner with visual arts. This tool has fascinated me and inspired me. I love doing value studies without color. It’s liberating. I can’t wait to use this app again and again.
Great tool for artists
Does an incredible job for learning values and includes a variety of tools to adjust values. Worth the price. Would love the addition of a copy and paste option when submitting photos. Besides that it’s perfect.
Time saver
Love this app. So easy to use and to follow when planning a particular painting!!
Value Study’s value
This application has proven to be an indispensable asset in my creative process, particularly in discerning the core value structure of my artistic projects.
