Really good, just wish for one fix
I love this app, for the clean design and good amount of vocab to practice. I do wish that when you got the vocab wrong it would also play the audio for how it sounds too. Especially since it has kanji, so I can’t really sound the word out without the furigana to know what it was. If there was a setting to play audio on the incorrect answers to this would be perfect!
Good app but don’t expect support
App serves its function as a vocabulary learning tool but for having a subscription, I expect more. When inquiring about a technical issue, was informed “Regarding technical support, we regrettably must inform you that service for Lirer is now limited to subscription-related issues at this time. The app may continue to be used as-is.” which is very concerning. If one is paying money as a subscription service, one would expect a system of continuous improvement to the experience or you might as well just pay once and be done. I don’t know the reason for why they can’t address technical issues but to the developers…please do better in this regard as the app is far from perfect. It will sometimes give you a definition to focus on and then in the example sentences, use another multiple times, the lesson quizzes may freeze up, review quizzes may slow to a crawl leading to wrong input on the following question while waiting for the screen to move on, etc… Overall, it is a good learning tool but I don’t expect it to be great in the long run if unwilling to support technical issues.

endless loop
each time it launches, the app asks for an update to the latest version, providing a link to the App store. But once there, the only option is to “open” — which just sends you back to the app for a rinse-and-repeat. Maybe not ready for prime time yet?
Great vocab but…
Definitely should include the option for furigana. At an N5 level there’s kanji not yet known that makes learning not as easy starting out for beginners.
Please add Indonesian translation like bunpo

One of my favorites
I’m enjoying the app and the way vocabulary is drilled per lesson works well for me. I find the example sentences and kanji explanations particularly helpful. The mnemonic sentences don’t do much for me, but sometimes I will reference them. I would love an option to breakdown kanji further into their radicals and parts if it lends itself to the definition. As a mnemonic device, it helps me more to understand them that way: like seeing rain 雨 in snow 雪 and electricity 電気. I would also love a better spaced repetition, as the reviews feel sparse and don’t seem to bring up the same words often enough. Overall I love the app, and I use it as my primary one for vocabulary (after having tried many apps before.) I paid to unlock everything and it’s worth the money! Thanks for the hard work!
Not as great as the Bunpo app unfortunately,
I was early adopter of the Bunpo app and had high hopes for this app, it’s okay but there’s a lot to be fixed, the app crashes during review, I wish there was an option to reset progress as well because I feel like having the kana in my reviews at this point is just a waste of time. The app has huge potential with just a few fixes. I don’t know if they’ll ever fix them , it doesn’t seem like they update this app much anymore
Great for vocab and pronunciation
Overall love the app, and I love that there is pronunciation for all the words and sentences. However, I do wish that there was better spaced repetition. As far as I can tell, there’s only one opportunity to refresh vocab and you’re never prompted again to revisit vocab. Better spaced repetition would really take this above and beyond
Here me out
So it’s basically a slightly worse version of Bunpo and Lirer isn’t bad but it teaches you words and shows you the context but doesn’t teach you how to stick with it you know? It needs a subscription which I would get so just stick with YouTube videos like JapaneseFromZero or (hate to say it Japansespod101) anything else. If you use Lierer that’s ur choice but I would recommend more then this, in general not a bad app just needs a different way of teaching it’s pretty bad, worse then Duolingo
Has potential
The looks really nice and simple. But I have a bug where I can’t type. When it gets to typing the meanings, I can usually type the first 2 then my keyboard stops working.
Good style teaching
I enjoy the style it uses for teaching. I really think how they teach in this app (Hiragana, Katakana, Basic Kanji, Etc.) and they also have it set up in the format in how it’s learned in the way I would need to take a class in college for N5-N1. So far haven’t stumbled across any bugs👌. 🫡
A great thing ruined by functionality bugs
Update: In addition to all the other bugs I mentioned, now my review is broken and I’m not being shown over half the lessons I’ve done for review. Such a shame this app is completely abandoned. Let me start with the positives. This app is one of the best resources for learning Japanese vocabulary that I’ve found in my nearly 10 years of study. It has a robust vocabulary list and flash cards that effectively teach kanji, meaning, and the reading. Lessons are appropriately sized and never feel overwhelming. BUT this is all ruined by the app’s many many bugs. Multiple lessons can’t be completed because answer options won’t show up, my phone vibrates nonstop every time I have to type in Japanese, some reviews will freeze and you have to close the app and reopen it. I really really want to love this app just like I love Bunpo but these “game breaking” bugs need to be fixed before I can.
Good, some improvements needed!
Love the way it compartmentalizes all the vocab for the JLPT, though some translations could use some fixing, some bugs here and there but overall very helpful!
Silly Amount of Potential
This app could easy be the best way to expand your Japanese vocabulary both in literacy and vocally. But I’ve complained for a while about the broken review system to no avail. Words that I’ve learned from N5 simply just don’t show up for review at all and some of the first batch of words I’m learning from N4 are gone. I really want to progress but I don’t see the point in continuing with a dysfunctional review system. I would casually splash money at this app so I can continue learning the language I’m passionate about but until then, I’m pulling out.
Good
The app is good so far, but when using the Japanese romaji keyboard to input answers it keeps vibrating. It’s quite annoying and there are no settings to change this. I will update if that is changed, and I’ve had more time to use.
Easy to use
I like how easy it is to use, I just downloaded it and I’m already learning faster than most other apps!
clunky and buggy
I made the mistake of purchasing this after just using it a few minutes, and reading the other reviews. Sadly, my experience has been very poor. I've encountered display issues (iPad Pro 12.9 on the latest version of iOS), mismatches between what's written (displayed in hiragana) and what's said, and minor bugs (how hard is it to randomize a list??). Even without the bugs, the UI is difficult. This feels like a beta product. Worst of all, I've had no response to my email to the developer.
Overall good
This app overall is pretty good but a little expensive for the subscription if you want both of the apps($20 per month) and this app is a little buggy taking a long time to load.
Could be great but some major flaws.
This app is good when it works as it is supposed to. The method of spaced repetition is good although example sentences in the review section would be nice. This apps biggest issue is the memory. I don't know how the app stores your cards which need reviewing but this consistently gets lost leaving the learning experience poor. This issue is absolutely critical and must be fixed. At the moment the only thing keeping on this app is the lack of competition.
Has bugs/ wrong answers
Multiple times it expects an answer that is wrong, and sometimes it won’t give you the characters in a question so you can’t get past it and therefore cannot complete that line of lessons. Not great for a paid app. I’ve submitted the bug reports but not sure if these are being addressed. In general I also don’t like: -the fact the phone vibrates when you type kana, this makes no sense at all and drains unnecessary phone battery for no improvement on user experience -the fact that answers auto-submit without letting you click on a submit button. -the fact that you have to unlock lessons in a row, even though they have no sequential relation to each other. The choice should be given to the user to decide their preference -no control over what goes into SRS queue I do like: -the layout of lessons -the fact it even has SRS functionality -the look of the app -the fact it has a feedback mechanism Please fix the bugs!!
Great Learning App
It makes it super easy to learn step by step. I use it in conjunction with Duolingo now. I like how it skips all of the theatrics and just gives it to you straight.

Very good but contains mistakes.
This is a great app but I’m surprised to see errors periodically. I’m wondering if users are not bringing them to the developer’s attention, or the developer is not as interested in quality control as perhaps they should be. Overall it’s a fantastic app for learning Japanese but the occasional mistakes do not inspire 100% confidence.
By far, the best japanese learning app but now it crashes
Update after ~6months: After learning everything in JLPT N3, I’m just doing the review. However, after trying to review, the app will crash. I don’t know why but I’ve tried it over and over again and it will automatically crash. Now I can’t do reviews. —— I’ve been using a lot of japanese learning apps, even when I was still using Android but this one is so far the best one for me. It is easy to learn, and even encourages you to review. The simple UI is also so attractive. Kudos to the dev!

How turn off the vibration feedback
During the review when I have to input japanese characters always vibrate. Super annoying and I can’t find ways to turn the vibration off.

Way too many typos
I’ve been looking for a good vocabulary app for ages and I was excited to find this one. It has so much potential to be great. But it is plagued by typos. For example, it listed the meaning of 奥さん as “your wise” instead of “your wife” in almost every instance. This also makes the review system difficult, because it usually only accepts the wrong, typo answer as correct instead of the actual correct answer. For example, it asked me to type the meaning of 計算する. I typed “to calculate.” Wrong. It was “to caluculate.” Another example - it asked me to translate 三人. Three people, right? Easy. But nope. It wanted me to type “three peoplem.” For being $30, I expect better quality control and I regret spending my money when I could have gotten some vocabulary books instead. Edit: After using this app more, I discovered a bug(?) where the list of review words disappears after a few days. I logged in expecting to review a couple hundred words and discovered the review space empty. Reviewing words is the most important part of studying vocabulary. Now I have to go back and redo hundreds of lessons? It’s awful. What a waste of time. In addition, this app could be improved a lot by showing the English translation and/or reading when doing reviews. Right now, it just says “Correct!” if I guess that (for example) 幼稚園 is read as ようちえん, but there is no re-enforcement of the word’s meaning. There are lots of times when I can read the kanji correctly but I don’t remember the meaning of the words. This app has potential if all these issues are fixed, and if it improves, I would be willing to increase my star rating. But as for now, I’m keeping it one star.
Great, but bugged.
The app itself is wonderful and helps to learn vocabulary, however I have found it impossible to complete any lesson. Each lesson is broken down into parts, first teaching you the words, then defining them in a multiple choice quiz, then choosing the correct readings (also multiple choice), then typing, and finally matching pairs. The app works perfectly fine for every section EXCEPT for the typing. For some reason, as soon as the typing section begins, the screen drops down halfway and only shows the top half of the screen. This still allows me to type my answers, but it makes the final section impossible, because half the answers are hidden below the screen. This is a very nice app, but it is unfortunately ruined by this one bug. I’m not sure if anyone else has this issue, or if it is just me because I am using an iPad, but I hope it can be resolved quickly so I can fully appreciate the app. Thanks.
Very Helpful - I love using it with Bunpo
I like Lirer and Bunpo a lot (same people) and I use them in conjunction with Kanji. I don't write reviews much, but I wanted to chime in to help spread the word. I hope this app continues to be used and receive updates and support. Thank you!
App won’t even open for me—just crashes
Don’t know…but I tried deleting the app from my phone, reinstalling it and nothing. I will change my review if I can finally get into the app and use it

Seems to me this app is near perfect but the audio has issues and when I’m trying to learn Japanese it takes awhile to load another sample of what I need to learn next needs more improvement

Bug in reviewing frequency
Review 3: I love the Bunpo, lirer suite but both apps are truly broken to the point of being practically useless. What’s a study app with a broken review session. Especially Lirer where reviewing words is the most important piece to remembering them? My suggestion to the developers is to revert this app(and Bunpo) to the older version that actually worked and let your users benefit from the chance to actually use the app to study. If you’re developing in a version controlled environment (GitHub or some other app) please use that environment during this time to give us an older but working version of this app. I paid for this app and would like to get my moneys worth. Review 2: during the fix of the bug I just mentioned below in my first review, something else has completely broken. I now have many words I have studied but the review area doesn’t not recognize it. It says “complete one lesson to start review” as if I haven’t done 10s or maybe even 100 reviews already. Even with it being completely broken however I did not lower the stars to 2 because the customer server here is great. I got a response quickly and was informed that the bug would be fixed. When that happens I will give full stars and change my review. Review 1: When finishing new words it starts me at 6/8stars. This makes it so that I don’t see the words very often in my review. Other than that, this is among my top study tools along with Bunpo. I did however have to give 3 stars and not 5 because right now it’s not very helpful since I can’t review my vocabulary properly. But I will change it to 5 as soon as this bug is fixed
Really good idea but some bugs
I like the app and think it’s really good for reviewing for the JLPT, but randomly my learned words will disappear from the Review section, and I can’t get a timed review on them anymore. I paid for the app so it’s really sad that’s happening, but overall I do still enjoy using it and think it’s useful
