I really like this app, it really helps you stay interested and focused with its creative game set up, almost like a real class. I super recommend this app if you want to learn, it’s well organized and treats you like a real student as you climb up the ranks. I just wish it gave us control to go over the specific assignments we still have trouble in. It does seem to give you an option to go over your mistakes but only when you pay for the premium, which I don’t mind I’ll find another way to go over the mistakes, but if that was free it would’ve been perfect. Nonetheless really well made app 👏👏👏
This app is not very helpful
There are free resources out there that are much more helpful. I have 2 main complaints about this app. First, there is absolutely no point in playing an audio prompt then asking how to write that in romaji. That’s literally just English. Second, on the questions where you need to type your answer, you type using the English keyboard and the app automatically converts it to hiragana. But then it marks it incorrect because you didn’t use kanji. But the app doesn’t give you a way to insert the kanji. You need to download the Japanese keyboard onto your phone from the Settings app in order to type kanji (granted, you should do that anyway if you’re learning Japanese). But even then, these beginner level questions are requiring you to have already learned a lot of kanji.
Great app…has bugs since last update
I love this app. It’s a cute way to learn Japanese! However, since the last update, I found a couple of bugs. 1. I cannot connect to help through the chat box. It keeps saying “Something went wrong. Please try again later.” 2. In the lesson for “Too Much”, two sentences are switched around.
Meh.
This app is great. For basic vocab and characters. Other than that I don’t think it does a very good job in teaching people Japanese. It misses important things (like adding 〜さん after a name) and the vocabulary and sentence structuring is very robotic once you get past basic x は y です。 I love the concept, truly, but as someone who has studied Japanese for a while and used this app as a fun refresher I would not recommend it to a beginner.
Unknown badge notifications
The icon shows a badge notification, but I can’t find anything in the app about what this notification is or how to remove it. Nice app, but I had to do a search to figure out how to disable badging notifications because of this app.
Best in class
By far the best language learning app we have ever played. Cute, and very thorough. Good pacing and retention is also really good. Well worth turning off the ads for. Only complaint is I’d like another chapter of the story. It’s a great motivator, but I ran out and would really like the author to post more!
WARNING -
DO NOT SPEND THE MONEY!! It does not actually explain grammar or anything. And if you ask questions it shuts off the reporting feature. It makes you figure things out. Other features like the voice recognition do not work well at all.
Glitches
Mine keeps saying “ your half way done” and just keeps loading so idk what that is about but maybe it’s just me but um it work very well it helped me learn kanji so yeah

Wonderful companion to learning
I’ve been using this app for several years and it has grown and come a long way. It’s very useful for studying! It follows a learning path similar to most textbooks which makes it a great way to get some extra practice in if you keep pace with whatever textbook you’re using. Additionally, it’s a great way to review things you’ve already learned. I love that it’s grammar heavy, teaches kanji, and provides voice audio and pictures to help you really grasp everything Please continuing to update this app! I don’t know how far it goes but I would gladly keep using it throughout my education

Sentence Structure is a Life Saver
I absolutely love this app. Trying to learn Japanese on your own can be extremely challenging, but this app makes it simple and easy. Plus they have a bunch of rewarding games that also let you practice your Japanese. The only thing that would make this better is if we could hear the sentences said by multiple different people.

So I was playing the first lesson and once it came to the speaker lessons I couldn’t hear I tried watching a video and that worked so I don’t know what’s wrong and now I was up to 5 questions left to 9 please help!!!!!
Probably alright for a beginner though I think perhaps there are better avenues in general
Positives: I like the art. I like the idea of there being an adventure of sorts. I genuinely think you can learn from this app. Negatives: The app is painfully slow and sluggish, everything just moves along at a snails pace not just the menu and UI but the lessons too, you’ll do a lesson and the cards will hang around way too long, the animation is painfully slow and the keyboard input is painfully slow and if you accidentally select the wrong answer by mistake your subjected to repeats of the item answer with seemingly no way to skip the unneeded explanation. Slowness is particularly annoying when you know probably 98% of all vocab for probably the next several handfuls of levels (if not the entire app) but can’t skip ahead due to gaps in knowledge in other areas such as grammar. I hate hate hate the keyboard, it does not use my IOS default keyboard but instead some variant which has a completely different layout… why? Don’t know… I try to switch to the Japanese keyboard but I seemingly only have one other Hiragana option which isn’t my preference (despite having more setup for use in IOS) . I also do not like the way the romaji is interpreted, partly because of the omission of the “x” due to the layout preventing me from making kana small in my usual (and standard almost everywhere else) way but also no self terminating ん when hitting space or other which can lead to frustrations as well as other interpretation “quirks” and as I mentioned earlier making unintentional errors and being subjected to to the painfully slow correction card animations and the problem being exacerbated by the English keys not being where I’m used to. I wish there was more character interactions. At the beginning there was a handful of conversations with characters at a few locations such as the arcade and temple etc. I found this to be a fun way to keep me motivated, Perhaps with the prospect being that the Japanese learned would maybe be utilised later in these interactions…. But since the start and I’m several levels in to the app now and there has been no further interactions and I’m wondering if there will ever be more, which then has me wondering what the point in these character and locations even was?? Maybe more to come in later levels but I’m not a psychic unfortunately ;) and tbh not sure I’ll stick around to find out. I thought the arcade would be great but that was the biggest disappointment if I’m being honest, Not to be harsh but I wouldn’t really call them games nor would I say they are fun, I was hoping for maybe some fun outrun style game which somehow incorporated vocab or…or ..or (just spitballing but this is more what comes to mind when thinking of a Japanese arcade) what we get is card flip etc which like with earlier in the lessons etc is painfully slow and unfortunately no fun, again not to be harsh, I don’t see anyone playing these games more than once or twice :( There seems to be a bug in mine where “free coins” will just hang out in the book store, I touch them and nothing happens, they are just stuck there. I would have thought I’d be able to open a book or something at the bookstore too but I can’t seem to do anything other than look at the premium app options (riveting stuff ;)) maybe your supposed to be able to buy books with the coins or something and I have a bug (?) Anyway I think this is a 6 / 10 app but could be much higher with the minor niggles I mentioned above fixed and probably 10/10 with the bigger asks such as the arcade wishes m, which no other app has done well to be fair. Hope the devs take all that as constructive as I do understand the hard work that goes into these sorts of things :)

This game is so cute but I am being kicked out.
Developers, please respond and fix. I saw a review that has a very similar problem. They have the same iPhone as me (iPhone 8+) and every time I open the app it asks me what language I speak and then I hear the background music start to glitch and then I’m kicked out from the app. I’m really disappointed because it looks like such a fun game and can help me continue learning and brushing up on my Japanese like I’ve been needing. But as soon as I found what I’ve been looking for, it has bugs. So unfortunate. Great concept but the app is defective. Developers please follow up with a bug fix, response or solution to this problem because I would be extremely happy to play your game.
Fairly simple but could be more
I really like this app. Aside from being super cute I feel like the memorization is fairly easy. My only tick is that I wish it had a player to player option and was more open world. It’s a little limited but the add on or sister app, KawaiiDungeon, is a fun side thing to test your memorization in a mortal combat/street fighter style game. Worth getting the subscription too. You can only “fail” 5 times before you get a time lock but you can “fail” unlimited times with the sub which honestly “failure” is how one succeeds. So I highly recommend it but just wish there was more open world interaction with real people to practice and more Riko story dialog. She’s the main character but her screen time and story is very limited. As an RPG, they really missed the mark but as a tool for learning they’re doing alright. I don’t think it’s 5* yet but there’s a lot of room for growth.
App doesn’t work
The app seems really effective and fun to use, but every time I try to open the app it doesn’t let me and closes it. I don’t know how to fix this problem. I’ve tried freeing up my storage by deleting games and pictures/videos but nothing seems to work. I was looking forward to learning Japanese with this since all the other apps I’ve tried have been boring and bland, and I was disappointed when I couldn’t even use it, especially after I deleted a lot of photos to use it.
Ok but I have the lives
I like the concept and design but can I get rid of the 5 mistakes I’m learning a language for the first time of course I’m gonna make mistakes if it wasn’t for the pictures I already would’ve went to a diffrent app pls remove the 5 lives

This is cute and a good introduction to Japanese. The only thing that I did not like was it often would swap between more casual and polite speech, which can be confusing for someone who has never learned the difference, since casual and polite conjugation is different.
Paid content lost with update
Had paid for all available content preupdate. Was able to use online or offline, often don’t have internet access. Post-update, all of the content that I had already paid to access is only available while online, and with ads, unless I pay a premium AGAIN. I’d already paid to use the content, making users pay again for the same unrestricted access is not cool...
Problem
Bonjour je suis à la leçon conjugaison des adjectifs 1 partie 2. Je rencontre un soucis pour げんき じやない です。 En effet car j’ai beau écrire や à la bonne place il m’indique que c’est une erreur le ya semble être en minuscule. Quel est le problème? Je ne peux pas avancer dans les leçons c’est dommage...
Truly a fun way to learn Japanese
I wanted to learn Japanese with fun and helpful way to learn Japanese, this app just does that, it’s not that popular but the game is truly underrated and is such a amazing game, with no bad distractions, just a few ads, I will continue on to support this game
Bugs
I am having trouble with the app. It crashes about 2-4 seconds after I open the app. Literally cannot get past the language selection page before it crashes. I have an iPhone 8 Plus ios 16.7.7 I have tried removing the app from my phone and reinstalling. I have turned off and turned back on my phone. I have tried the app support for kawaiiNihongo in the App Store- which redirects to a web page with a link to the App Store. I have tried sending a message in the messenger app but have received no response. I really loved this app and would like to get back into it but it is not working
Cute, and fun, but lacking in updates
I’ve had this game over a year. It is a really great concept, and if you like RPG game aesthetic then this might really tickle your fancy. I’ve found in large, for this game to be helpful. However, it doesn’t seem like there are a lot of lesson updates. I’ve had the same lesson content available since last year. I do wish the updates were a little more frequent since this has been one of the most enjoyable Japanese learning apps I’ve ever used.

Habe die App installiert, und fand den Anfang gut, nur beim registrieren des Accounts gibt es Probleme. Habe ein iPhone und wollte mich dann über das Game Center registrieren. Leider ist dies nicht möglich gewesen. Da ich mich nicht über Facebook anmelden kann, da ich keinen Account besitze ist es doch etwas blöd geregelt. Vielleicht kann das beim nächsten Update behoben werden, dann würde ich sie mir wieder installieren.

This is a real pocket school
One GLARING issue I noticed
To the developer: yes, it’s due to font, BUT to say the style you use is better for writing is wrong. It is for calligraphy, but THAT DOES NOT make it the form for writing. Personally, I find the connected form easier and faster to draw. Again, due to this issue (and others I did not mention) I wouldn’t suggest this app. The other issue (having problems with typing during the test) I would consider MUCH MORE pressing, but your response tells me that this app is DEFINITELY not worth it. So I did the test out feature at the beginning (that’s not where the issue is) and skipped ahead a bit because I do already know some Japanese, just not a whole lot. The issue is it counted me wrong on き(I drew it as like the font shown here, which isn’t wrong, but in the app IT WAS COUNTED WRONG) In this app they use the disconnected version, which ALSO isn’t wrong, but the thing is since I skipped ahead and BOTH ARE TECHNICALLY CORRECT it threw me off (especially since it didn’t show this on the flash card because I was tying to draw the characters) What was really weird is that was the first card that was counted wrong (due to a stroke order difference, though as I said BOTH ARE CORRECT) The thing is this one issue (along with the problems I had with typing with the keyboard in app on the test) makes me a bit hesitant to use this app, which is disheartening.
I do like this, however…
It takes far too long between each card and screen. I would like to go much faster. Also, it takes too long to turn over the cards in the matching game, etc. This game really needs to upgrade the speed overall!

honestly i have a lot of fun learning on this app, the drawings and the format help me memorize words and symbols. i recommend if you want to practice or train your japanese skills!

I thought this was a great app but...
This is a wonderful learning tool, although if you want to collect coins you need to play fox pop to get a promo code every 25 levels. I got up to level 25 and in couldn’t even redeem my promo code. I did everything the customer service told me. Please fix this. I’m really desperate to study Japanese. Thank you, Kinch

Even though it takes a while for it to load, it’s fun and engaging (especially for new Japanese learners)
The app crashes
I couldn’t even get into the app. I normally wouldn’t come straight to the comments to complain but I tried looking into app support, and I just got directed to a webpage with reviews for the app and no info on who to contact for support. I’m not sure why it is that the app just immediately closes me out and sends me to the home screen, but it’s really too bad. This seemed like a great visual way to learn.
My favorite app for learning Japanese
This app is a really good learning tool for Japanese. The only thing I wish they would add is a test option on all of the lessons where they don’t show a picture with the word or audio so you can really be challenged. Other than that, I really enjoy using this app.
