GREAT APP
Helps build the climbing community even more and makes it easier to see new sets and grades at your gym. I put notifications on and the app will notify me with those new sets and grades.
awful ui, crashes constantly
clearly designed to mimic other social-exercise apps, the bloated layout is only the second worst thing about this pile of trash, which cannot handle even a moderate amount of looking around the map without crashing entirely. the session features are sub par and also prone to lag and crashing, and anything of any use is gated behind steep monetization. I’d give this zero stars if that were an option
Bad offering for Kaya pro. Not enough locations
I got Kaya pro because I climb outdoors at many different places. Locations I have wanted that they didn’t have: - Fontainebleau - Magic woods - red river gorge I feel like for top destinations like this, there should be maps and offline maps. That’s the main reason I got Kaya pro.
App buggy and getting worse
I’ve been paying for this app for years at this point and the app keeps getting buggier and buggier. Doesn’t seem like the devs are really paying attention
Not useful for unverified climbs
Great app on the surface, but doesn’t end up being useful for me since unverified climbs don’t have geolocation data. This might not be an issue if the vast majority of the climbs weren’t unverified. The areas that end up being verified often have printed guidebooks anyways making the app not very useful. I’ll just stick with using printed guidebooks for big areas and mountain project for the newer or more obscure climbs. This app definitely has potential to replace both for me but not until there is a better way to view and discover information for unverified climbs.
Outdoor Climbing
I’ve used Kaya for indoor climbing. It’s very easy to use. I got the Pro for offline use of the guide for my upcoming outdoor trip. The download was very quick, about a minute. The ability to create and share lists and easily view beta videos have been very useful as my friends and I plan our trip.

Hey, routesetter here! Kaya is nice to have from the climbers side, it would be super awesome to have plastick accessible through the Kaya app, or its own app. I think having both accessible within the same app would help ease the process for routesetters so we don’t have to search/type the site and login each time to strip and set routes. Just a suggestion! Thanks :)
A bad guide book
If you enjoy terrible route photos, clunky topo lines, and misspellings or entirely lacking descriptions, go for it. Also, runs fairly slow, even after downloading the specific areas I want. Mtn Project app runs so so so so so much better.

Not very user friendly and hard to see value in the logging

KAYA’s map features and detailed topos are so so helpful. Has been a game changer in local Portland areas like Smith & Carver.

Needs design QA
I want to love this app. Was premium member for a year or so but the app always has random bugs that makes it unusable. At this moment, looking into a photo of a climb gets stuck because the navigation bar is off the screen. Also the only feature (the best of this app imo) is the workout, yet its buried ux is clunky and unusable.
Great content, so slow
You need to improve the speed of this app. I can be on my home WiFi (fiber) and loading vids will stall out and I’ll get a “slow network detected” notification from the app. Go to any other app on my phone and everything loads just fine. This needs to be fixed. The content is everything you want from a bouldering guidebook. Maybe some improvements could be made on navigating around the crag. Mountain project and git boulder have a swipe left and right mechanism that would be helpful. But this is pittance compared to the speed issue. Fix it and the app is 5 star
New way to beta
I tried Kaya back during Covid when a lot of comps were using it. But recently the gym I work at has started using it and it’s super fun to tick off your climbs and see other people’s beta. And I love posting my climbs so this gives me a place to post all my well earned sends. Super fun and I hope to see a real community grow within it for climbers. Go check it out!

It’s an ok app it works but I think it’s dying. Everyone’s latest video was from 2025. I think they stopped using kaya after 2025 and found a better app
Struggling app
Bummed that I have to change my rating, but recently this app has been suffering for me. In the last month or two videos don’t load at all, making most of the platform not useful. Watching videos on data is also insane - a 30 second grainy compressed video ate up almost 300mb of data. I’m glad I pay to download beta, but it’s crazy that kaya consumes 10x what youtube and tiktok do and offer such terrible quality. The new UI changes for gyms and crags is also not great. It’s now more clicks to access the same pages since they’ve opted for a full top down row nav vs the previous tabs.
Generally satisfied but room for improvement!
Specifically with watching beta videos. I try to watch them at the crag and even with 5G they take sooooo long to load. Then I open up YouTube and it plays no problem.
Great app
Kaya is a must get for any climber. The beta videos and maps are super helpful especially when going to a new area. The system for gyms and seeing new grades when a set drops is also useful. I love being able to scroll beta like reels it shows me how much good climbing is near me. The support team is super helpful with any questions and setting up Pro.
Not optimized for iPhone 17
Some screens won't size well with iPhone 17 Pro.
Glitch
Great app and very useful idea. There is a glitch where I get stuck in the comment section and have to close the app, the "X" to close does not work.
Spend your money on the books
The app is missing descriptions in popular areas of Squamish and other major zones. Does not show all of the lines well. GPS isn’t able to be accurate in dense zones. Finicky to pick a boulder to look at. Good base with lots of user interface and user experience issues to work out. Will not be purchasing another year.

I found the app bloated with features and hard to navigate
Functional and user friendly
Overall I've had a great experience with KAYA. My local gym uses it to post routes which creates a real-time platform to share beta and upload send videos or feedback to setters. I've also used KAYA Pro for outdoor bouldering navigation in Squamish and it was better than most other options. It's been great to participate in community app challenges that keep me engaged during sessions and give me climbing goals that aren't outdoor projects.

New update is buggy. Can’t view the last beta vid on any climb
Great for tracking gym climbs
I use this app to track my climbs after every gym session. The gym map is great. However the app is lacking in some major ways. The workload score does not differentiate between top and lead, when of course leading is harder than top rope. Therefore, the workload score should increase for sends on lead. Even worse - the “ascents pyramid” shows repeats as red points 😤 The ascents pyramid should track individual routes only, not repeats. There should also be a way to see total sends on lead vs top rope. And if you submit a ticket requesting these features they will never respond 🙄
Not useful outside of the US
App is very US centric. The main climbing gyms I go to are not included. Route difficulty is only available using V numbers (for boulders) or YDS numbers (for routes), which is not helpful for those using French grading. As it is, it’s not useful for me unless I can track all of my climbs with this, and since the gyms I go to use French and not YDS ratings I can’t be bothered to remember how to convert the rating when trying to enter sends here.

This helps me improve my technique when climbing, it shows what I have done, and I can look at what other people do!
No respect or integrity in the community
Authors beware. They do not respect authors or the community. Pressuring authors to give their years of hard work to them or someone else will take it. Publishing closed and protected areas despite years of effort working with land managers to protect access. They do not care about climbing they only care about their business & profits. That’s it. Read the fine print before you sign up or even better… buy printed guide books!
Like Strava for climbing

Feature rich but the UX flow needs an overhaul
Too many taps just to add a send for yesterday. This app presumes that it is open for the entire duration of the session as it is happening. Adding climbs for previous dates is not intuitive. The app doesn't remember what date you're adding for, or which gym. Could be awesome for tracking all aspects of climbing but maybe not yet
really great for finding boulders in new areas
guidebooks are great but they don’t have offline gps and this does.
Can’t even log in
I’d love to use this app to track my climbs and get help with beta, but I can’t even log in. I can’t use either my google or apple accounts to create a new user bc an account apparently already exists, but I also can’t consistently sign in or reset the password. For those few successful sign in attempts, I am taken to what looks like a landing page where absolutely nothing will load.
Great climbing app constantly improving
Lots of great features that enhance the climbing experience for beginners and seasoned climbers. Really helps build a virtual community and generally users are supportive and positive. Occasionally the app goes through updates that move things around or causes minor glitches but the team seems to be constantly testing new things out which is welcome and a great way to find what works. The free version works well and is a great experience already, really hope it stays that way and doesn’t force everyone into the Pro version!
Gym users stuck if your gym stops using
This is probably fantastic for anyone doing outdoor climbing in areas where there is a guide. That would be static so you know you will have it. I only climb indoor and had been enjoying the app when my gym joined and had all their climbs in the app. I did the promotion mid year when they moved a bunch of free functionality to the pro side and wanted people to move to pro. I understand it takes resources to develop and maintain a great app, so subscribed for the year with the promotion. Two months into the year my gym has stopped using it due to the price increases Kaya threw at them. So now I’ve paid for a year and was able to use it for under 3 months. Wounding recommend for gym users since they can change cost and function both in user and gym size and you don’t know if you’ll be able to use long term.

Highly recommend
Very convenient and user friendly. It’s great to have all your guide books and ticks in one place. The map makes finding the climbs so much easier than using a regular guidebook.
Meh, forced acct creation to “view”
Not a fan of the forced account creation to merely view data when mtn proj already has more routes. And I hope they aren’t wholesale copying info from guidebooks or topo owners just to fill in their gaps.
