A living TV show
Since 1979 I have been watching this show and have been a fan. You can say that I grew up watching TOH with bob, Steve etc. This show has taught so many of us the how-to’s of home repair and other building knowledge. May this show last forever.
“Subscribe” - “You’re already subscribed”
The app was great until I tried to watch This Old House tonight. I opened the app and rather than the play button, it had a subscriber button. Weird, since I already subscribed. Even weirder was when I clicked on the subscribe button and it said I’m already subscribed. I paid to stream the show but there’s no way to play it…please fix this issue
Can always learn something
Wether it’s carpentry, plumbing, painting, landscape, electrical, u can always find most answers to ur questions.
Video all pixelated
The regular show is fine but all Ask this Old house episodes are pixelated now.
Too long uploading new episodes
I think I’m going to cancel my subscription. You take too long to upload new episodes and seasons shot months prior. I would prefer the Netflix way drop the Season and let us binge the whole series.
The Best
Have watched for many years. Like how everything comes together. This show keeps me interested. I like how things are created out of nothing. Beautiful designs and results. Keep up the fantastic guys. Especially like Arlington. Watch it several times.
Ads for a subscription???
Used to be great until they started putting ads in it! Pay $100 a year for this and they’re making you watch ads. Will not be renewing!
The old was better
Not a fan of the apps new layout, but will get use to it I guess.. My main concern is why get rid of the iconic blue that is normally associated with This Old House?
Crashes every time you exit the video (iPad)
I love the content and I’m happy there is an app, but every time you exit the video on an ipad by pressing the left arrow, the app crashes. This is true even after updating today.

It’s All Here
I just stumbled across this show and quickly went through all I could on Amazon prime. The YouTube channel, while full of videos, also seemed limited and a little hard to find what I was looking for. I am thrilled that this app, which is very easy to navigate, has comprehensive and free access to every season and every episode. Thanks This Old House!
Frustrated and Cancelled
I gave up trying and cancelled. Paid after free trial and now not able to watch programs. Support keeps saying there’s a tech issue and they’re working on a fix. Sent several emails asking for someone who actually works for old house to contact me. Crickets. Cancelled today.
Fix this old app ?
So so happy to have access to more that 40 years worth of TOH. I’m watching episode 1 with Bob Vila ... and a very young and shy Norm Abram. This is like therapy listening to these old programs. frustrating Issu with the app ... once you finish watching an episode on iPad, you need to force quit the app in order to get back to the main menu. Surely an issue with in programming. Maybe Norm or Tom could fix this ? Great show. True in 1979. Truer in 2020.
App redesign missing great feature
I watch on the AppleTV app. This new app redesign completely did away with the ability to browse and watch segments by topic. This was a very useful feature. Now, you can barely view any segments, and they are categorized by just a few things like How to, Build it, What is it. Whereas before, you could browse by topics like Attics, Basements, Bathrooms, etc.
Episode descriptions are not accurate.
The little blurbs that tell what each episode is about are all off by a season or two. I.e. the description of SE13 EP1 actually belongs under SE12 EP1. It makes it hard to keep up with where you are and impossible to find any particular episode.
Access to great content!
Love being able to watch the current episodes each week, as well as the back library of content as an Insider. No ads - great experience.
Horrible Customer Service
Really disappointed in the customer service. One would think since the guys of the show are professional and cut no corners and very respected that would carry over - not so much. I’m literally getting charged for an app that I can’t use cause of subscription errors. I canceled and will watch whatever I can from YouTube. Take a cue from the guys on the show app team and do better.
Content is Great. App needs work
You have to fix the bug that crashes the app when you hit the back button after an episode ends. Also, how in 2024 do you not have a watched indicator so we can track which episodes we’ve watched and what the progress is.
2024 version has bugs
The new 2024 app displays incorrect episode descriptions, which is frustrating. They also removed the feature that allowed you to easily scrub forward or back 10 seconds just by pressing the right or left buttons on your remote. Navigating through videos now takes several additional clicks and is less precise. Last, TOH has an iconic logo and blue color scheme! Why on earth is the new icon dull gray with the entire phrase “This Old House” jammed on it in minuscule print?

It’s interesting to see how the show has evolved over the years Especially since Bob hosted and developed it.
Disappointing
I’m so disappointed with the way this app works. Seems fine at times but not really. I have billed twice for a yearly subscription within 3 weeks for something that I can barely get to work. I have emailed them at least 3 times and I get the same BS responses that they are working on it and they will elevate it. I can stream it from my iPhone to my Apple TV but usually after a couple of episodes it will kick me out and tell me my subscription is expired. I installed the APP on my Apple TV and it says my subscription is expired. I love this old house but there is no support from the APP it almost seems like a scam. I contacted my credit card company to try and get a refund for the double subscription charge one was through APPLE and the other was through the Apple TV app so disappointing
Well...it plays videos...
Last update 2 years ago so I'm guessing no development is happening. At any rate my issues. (on iPad) 1) It doesn't pay attention to the orientation of my iPad. (minor) 2) You can't stop a video and return to the list of episodes 3) It doesn't automatically play the next video (wich would be useful given issue #2. 4) It doesn't remember where playback left off. These issues are confounding given where the industry is in terms of video software. They could've licensed a better developed package. Ah well. It plays videos......The playback quality is good which ain't nuthin.
Great show, buggy app
App is just kind of sloppy. The show descriptions are for shows for other seasons, the shows sometimes feed into the next episodes but sometimes lock up and crash the app instead, if you need closed captions, you have to turn them on for each and every show, etc. Endlessly frustrating. However, the content is extremely valuable and presented in a lucid and entertaining way.
Excellent
The issues mentioned in previous reviews appear to be resolved; app is very easy to use and remembers where you left off, even if you want to jump between seasons. There is a “continue watching” panel on the Home Screen, with about 4 options of your most recent watched content, but if you want to find something you had on further back, just find what season you were watching and the episode is highlighted so you can easily find that too. When you’re watching, it will automatically play the following episode, but you can select the ‘back’ arrow to go back to the main menu at any time. I like to use the screen mirror option on my iPhone so I can enjoy watching on my TV. No need to review the actual program, as we’ve all subscribed to be able to enjoy our beloved This Old House, that obviously gets 5 stars as well.

Paid subscription no longer working. No response from support. Straight up theft.

Crashes a lot, very buggy rotation lock support, no “continue where you left off” - you gotta remember what season and episode you were on. Sounds like these bugs have been around for years for a paid content? Unacceptable, devs.
Impossible to navigate between episodes
We love Ask This Old House and watching it without commercials. However, it’s very frustrating to use this app! It’s not possible to go back once an episode is playing and going to the next episode doesn’t always work. I have to completely delete the app and download it again almost every time. I have sent e-mails about these issues with no reply & no improvement in the app. There must be someone who can fix those problems!
It’s fixed!
The old version of this app would crash often and had lots of bugs. But I just redownloaded it last night, and everything works better than ever! If you had given up on the TOH app, try again today.
Don’t Do It
Legitimately one of the worst app experiences. My Insider subscription, which was prepaid for an entire year, isn’t working correctly and registering that I’ve subscribed. So the seasons I want to watch I can’t, and emails to support go unanswered. Beyond frustrating.
Can’t play more than one episode. AppleTV
I was so excited to be able to watch all the episodes of This Old House and immediately signed up for the monthly subscription. But you can only watch one episode. Then you have to force quit the app and launch it again. The back button on the remote doesn’t do anything. Please fix this! Unacceptable. This is on AppleTV
Liked it before the last update.
Before the last update, I could open it in landscape orientation with. I problems. Now, it defaults to portrait orientation until you start playing a video. I often use it in a hands free setup, and can’t easily change the orientation to read the episodes. It makes it harder to pick up where I left off.
Been watching for 40 years.
Started watching in my early teens with my dad in the 1980’s. I’m 52 and still love it. Annual cost is well worth it. Love the new programming and professionals but also love to go back and watch the early years.
Scam
I tried cancelling my membership and they kept giving me the classic run around hoping I'd give up. They said I had to cancel on the device I signed up for it on with the same app, that device was destroyed in a flood... so impossible. I eventually talked to customer service and they said they'd cancel my membership, 3 months go by and I get charged an annual membership fee. I had to contest it with my credit card company because their email for support said it wasn't working, scam tactics hoping older people can't figure this stuff out! Despicable and the app is worthless too, just watch on youtube or hire a professional. Most of their info is outdated and I work in construction forensics.
Treasures locked away
I am reviewing the AppleTV app: I love TOH, but this app is terrible. It’s the only way to view most of the seasons, but it’s extremely frustrating—often it won’t let you exit from a video, you have to hard restart the app; it doesn’t remember your last viewed episode, so you have to remember that; and, it won’t let you exit from a video! If you love TOH, you will endure. But this app needs to be better.
App needs work
Content is amazing but the app needs work. On iPad it does not support landscape mode, constantly skips episodes, and does not support Chromecast.

It’s hard to give a proper rating for this app
The content is great, the app is terrible, subscribing through Apple would not work for me. Tried 3 times and apple had to refund me 3 times. Eventually had to subscribe through amazon to get it to work. Streaming apps are generally used in landscape mode so functionality needs to be in landscape too. It’s a pretty brutal platform to be charging a subscription for at this point, especially if you can’t exactly remember where you left off in a season. It doesn’t resume where you left off, every time you go into the app it’s like it’s the first time it’s been run. The craftsmanship in the show is not reflected in this app, do better, please. As I said the content is still great and I’m hopeful TOH sees the errors in this app.
Great service, good app, a few quirks
Love the service, love having easy access to the back catalogue in high quality. Seeing a few issues when using the app on an iPad in landscape mode: 1) afaict there is no close button on the video player when in landscape, the only way to get from the player back to the episode collection is to rotate to portrait and back out of the navigation stack; 2) if you let the player auto advance to the next episode in landscape, the mask behind the player is lost, so you see a stripe of video over the episode detail view. In combination, the result is that in order to cleanly move from one episode to the next you need to rotate the device from landscape to portrait, pop the navigation stack, pick the next episode, and then rotate back to landscape. It’s a lot to do! Having said all that, it’s easy to live with because the content is great.
I can’t believe how bad the app is
Reading through these reviews, this seems to have been a problem for now many years. The app crashes it’s buggy. It’s almost unusable. In fact it is unusable. I have no idea how a brand with such high integrity could have such a horrible app. Who’s ever in charge of this app should be gone.
