One of the top 5 Chinese vocab apps
As someone who lived, worked, and studied in Shanghai, here’s a list of the top five Chinese vocab apps: * Daily Chinese * Hack Chinese * Du Chinese * Drops * Busuu I have tried them all and these five make the top five cut. Specifically, Daily Chinese is very cool in the way it helps you to learn words. 10 new words per day and 70 reviews. And unlike some apps, you don’t end up with an overwhelming backlog. I recommend all of the above five apps. Use them together and your vocab will soar! 加油! 你当然会成功!
Compatibility
Literally unusable on iPhone SE, nothing fits on the screen.
Impressively Clean UI, More Features Would Be Nice
VERY clean app. That alone makes it so nice to use compared to many others. I have 4 stars simply because it’s not very customizable right now even with the (relatively not expensive, single time payment of $7) premium. Here are some thoughts. 1) Id like to be able to see all the words I know and edit their stats. Sometimes I accidentally mark a word as known. 2) The non-flashcard questions provide too much information in my opinion. Each word has pinyin, characters, and definition. Of these 3, the questions always show two of them and leave only one on the back. Id much prefer only one on the front and two on the back (or even better, one on the back as well as the front), or to make possible to enable this. Until this is added, I unfortunately can only use the flashcards as getting, personally, getting two of the aforementioned characteristics means I can almost always guess the third, even if I don’t know it. 3) Reverse flash cards would lovely 4) Id like be able to do ALL my due questions in one without having to click on each deck individually.
Good App, but pricing is way off.
It’s a fine app, but a recent update introduced unlimited — essentially, if you want to do HSK I and another set of flashcards, you need to pay $8/mo or $72/year. I don’t want a subscription, and certainly not for flashcards. I would be OK with buying the packs, but subscribing to them is not the right business model. If you need the reoccurring revenue, there needs to be reoccurring content. Some simple Chinese stories based on the pack would be fine, a podcast, or even access to a study group are all better choices.
Good app
Really works well, but draws you in with 150 free words, then £6.99 a month after. I assumed it would all be available, but limited to one lesson a day, rather than it all being behind a pay wall.
So good app
The app is so good. As a person trying to expand my vocabulary this app has so many words I’ve seen people use in daily life. It is also straight to the point, it just gives you words to remember and work at your own pace, instead of learning the same thing 5 times and then moving on to something else. Although I do wish some things were free, this app is awesome to expand vocabulary.
Paid
I remember when it was free and it was a good app, now I can’t add any deck without paying.
Need better Subscription options
it’s a great app. if it had a lifetime purchase of like $20-$50 that would be great. it is a severely overpriced app. $80/year? Hulu is cheaper than that. There haven’t been many packs added since i last used this app, just AI stuff. i think they need to change the pricing and i would totally buy it
Now I Have To Pay?
I’ve been using this app for half a year to re-learn mandarin, and up until the recent update I have loved it, it has been perfect. Simple, easy to use, and most importantly, it didn’t cost money to open all reviews at once. I was very excited when I got the email about the update that included new HSK as I would be able to continue learning. In the email itself it never mentioned that one of the best features of this app, the ability to open as many reviews as there are packs, which has been free, is now something I will have to pay for if I wish to add any new vocabulary packs, or I will have to forfeit all of my progress so far. If you wished to do a subscription service, you should have added a new feature (such as the ability to combine all review words into one review), instead of locking a feature that had formerly been free behind a paywall. Because of this, I will no longer be able to use your app the way I have been, which is incredibly unfortunate for me. Even if, perhaps, new vocabulary packs cost a small, one time fee, that would be better than this, and I would have paid for those. These changes are a bit too much, especially when the email did not make clear that this “new feature” would be paid. I give two stars because I have gotten such great use of this app in the past, but the most important part of this app, for me, is no longer available, so I cannot rate higher. Please reconsider this. Thank you.
Works but app breaks often
Beware, do not click on the hanzí while talking or transitioning slides or it breaks and ya need to start again. Would get a five but this glitch is simply to app breaking
Better than Quizlet and Duolingo
Awesome app with many different HSK to choose from, spaced repetition, and different types of questions! Also a simple design which isn’t trying to beg you for a subscription every five seconds. And no ads!!!!!!
Just buy Anki
This app costs too much for glorified flashcards. just get anki and be done with it
Great but...
I wish there was an offline mode! Sometimes I lose signal when I'm on a train and then I'm unable to use the app. Would be nice if there was offline mode!!
Pronunciation is off
Gave this app a 6 day test . On day 7 it showed me a word that was 100% mispronounced ! So I asked a native speaking person to read the Chinese character and listen to the pronunciation . They came back with the same result I had, the app is not pronouncing the word correctly. On the plus side. This app shows the Chinese character in a very large font so the person learning can actually study what it looks like. One other Chinese learning app I am using - the font is so tiny the character is too hard to see ! Fixed your pronunciation problems and I will up level to a higher star rating .
Pricing off the rails
The app itself is great for learning Chinese vocabulary because it goes far beyond the basic learning level. However the new pricing model is too expensive. So I my main source for learning will be Anki. It’s ok to make money for the effort of creating the app, and compensation is deserved. Why not introduce an ad based version? That way you still make a bit on the version that’s free for users, and then maybe cut back on exorbitant subscription price? People can choose if they want to do away with advertising.
Great vocab app
This app is great for growing and maintaining vocab. It helped me pass HSK1 recently! I also like the categories for growing specific vocab like “going online” or idioms. I’d love a pack specifically regarding Chinese teas and teaware (e.g. gaiwan). My love of Chinese tea was a major motivation for learning Chinese.
Nice app but too expensive
For the current HSK1 it is around 70 USD for a year. Flashcards should not cost the same as a year of study materials written and audio. Otherwise easy to use. Maybe the price has changed, I cannot get the purchase page to open any more. Would have been more interested to say smaller fixed for hsk1/2 and then more for the additional and cool targeted word lists.
love the app
love this app but how do i take out words from the known section?? i can’t find the option. TT
Nice interface but lacking offline support
I like the simplicity with its nice interface and the week ordered card decks, but it is really annoying that the app is purely working online, without even caching sound and words. Sometimes I get stuck when learning outside, have to repeat a lot and the app crashes often.

Actually makes me review Chinese but lacking examples
I’m an American born Chinese that took a few Chinese classes in Highschool. It’s been a while since I learned and studied new words. But it’s been easier with this app. I really like that they have high hsk packs for intermediate folks. The already know option is great and helps avoid memorizing words you already know. The only thing is it’s missing examples. Words I’ve never heard of before are difficult to understand/use without examples. I have to use another app like Pleco or search online at yellowbridge to see how it might be used especially if it has multiple meanings. All aside, fantastic free app.
Absolute best vocabulary app
This is the first app I have ever left a review for. It is one of the few apps out there that does exactly what it says. Unlike all these gamified language learning apps where you can have a hundreds of days streak and still learn nothing, this app is simple, pleasant to use, and very effective. The decks are also extremely well organized; I started as a total beginner and after studying the “Road to Mastery” sequence for almost 1 year, I have enough of a working vocabulary to get through any intermediate conversation, as well as books, shows, etc. If I had any suggestion, I would like to be able to use the app offline. Thank you!
Good solid basic flash cards
Really love using this and having the streak counter. PLEASE provide a way to reverse the cards ie have the English show first and then flip to the Chinese. A shake to undo would be nice for accidental swipes.
A very good app for studying and learning vocab!
Really good app for learning and reviewing 汉子。它帮我学习!
Great tool for being able to read.
I love this app, it’s a good app,but I hope developers see this because I wish it was great. One thing for starters in when I flip the card it would be nice to have the character also on that flipped side. I find my self having to speed run first knowing the sound of it ignoring the meaning, then going back and only doing the opposite side. Also an example sentence using this new word we learn would help contextually visualize how it will be used. EVEN better would be if there was a way to make the sample sentence using mostly words we already know. Maybe highlight part of the sentence green for words we learned and maybe red for ones coming up and if we click it it could show a brief meaning. I have so many more ideas but that all depends if the developers only want to make a flash card app or something way more all in one learning resource. I’m currently using this app, pimsleur, anki, various drawing apps for stroke orders and ally’s more so I’ve been around the block here.
Solid vocab app
This is a solid app for a learning Chinese, can focus on the characters or the pronunciation, whichever you prefer. Doesn’t have all the distractions like other apps have, very clean and keep track of your progress. It has built-in sentence usage to help you understand how to use the words. It’s definitely not a game based app, so it’s more for focused students. I’m a big fan of the app, and would highly recommend it to others loading Chinese.
app is pretty good but could have some improvements
a a a left or right on the cards to aaybif you know it or not for example you would swipe right if you know it. also it would be mice if they updated it more frequently and maybe we can add our custom sets as wekllll or import them from quizlet
Daily Chinese - most helpful app
The Daily Chinese app has been the most user friendly and helpful app. Simple way for me to improve and grow my Chinese vocabulary. Love it and would recommend to others!
Terrific app, major shortfall
I love this app and use it daily when I have internet connection. It has dramatically improved my pool of recognized characters, my reading comprehension, and even my speaking abilities. Unfortunately, I often find myself without cell service for extended periods of time. The app doesn’t seem to work without connection and my progress is largely stymied during this time. Please add offline capabilities for this app and you’ll earn my five stars. Thank you for making mandarin learning fun and simple!
Simple and perfect!
I've been looking for an app like this for a long time. It's really straightforward and easy to use. Better than Anki. Uses spaced repetition to introduce new words and there a ton of different premade word lists to choose from. It's also really well designed!
great app
heritage speaker here. - when i mark lots of words as known at once in large decks like hsk6, they all come back for review on the same day. makes for an exhausting review day - it would be nice to have an option to only review words sometimes, instead of new words being front-loaded every review. that gives more time to digest words when i feel shaky on them
