Underrated app
For learning to read and write Hanzi, this is the best app Ive found. Paired with readers from Du Chinese or other apps, Skritter has been amazing for actually retaining new characters. Some of the decks that other users have created are just amazing for learning characters in an optimal order instead of just following HSK. Spaced repetitions, writing practice, and most importantly for me, even decks that were uploaded with simplified characters automatically become available in traditional! This is an amazing feature. Most apps support both character sets, but most of them do not auto-translate from one to the other when it’s user-uploaded content. This is a huge benefit.
Has unresolved technical issues.
A a wonderful platform for learning Chinese Characters. Unfortunately, it has unresolved technical issues. I bought a years subscription and two months into my subscription the site developed faults. I attempted to delete the app and reinstall. It wouldn’t allow me access to my previous subscription. I’ve claimed my money back by Apple subscriptions. If I rejoin in the future, I will pay monthly that way you don’t lose too much money if the site develops a fault. £120 is a lot of money to lose.
Great app
Great app, but I’m just waiting for the iPad writing capabilities before buying it (at a reasonable size, not huge like at the moment)
Buggy and poorly designed although pretty
The button to start the continuous mode just spins and spins and doesn’t let me start my lesson. The lessons with videos are cumbersome because on an iPhone I can’t open to full screen. Lastly, when I am starting a new set of cards there is no way to control the number of new cards it shows me so it’s overwhelming and I don’t get the benefit of the spaced repetition.
Bugs in video playback
I like it as an app but given how established it is, the highly visible bugs make me upset and angry. The buttons on the video overlay are unresponsive and I am having to force close the app to be able to stop any video. I find this unacceptable.

This app is amazing it helped me learn and write Chinese very well
WORST payment process EVER. Took my money and I cannot review content :,)
I wanted to like this app, but it is hard to when the payment process is so frustrating!! I made a personal account to study, and tried the subscription service. (Content itself, character writing, and vocab is a 3/5). However, my school needs me to use a school email/account to be added to my Chinese teacher’s classroom. I made a new account, canceling my old subscription, but Skritter is NOT allowing me to pay for a subscription on my new account. Went back, deleted Account #1, tried to subscribe to services on Account #2, it renews the payment for my account that doesn’t exist anymore. It will NOT let me pay for a new account, and took my money for no reason. It says that I’m paying for a subscription yet I cannot access ANY content at all. So frustrating, and not worth the stress when trying to study. Contacted help services but no one has reached out yet. Save your money, don’t subscribe.
Interesting experience
I love the handwriting aspect as well as the ability to learn in traditional script. However the use of AI generated videos is a little off putting.
Unscrupulous Practices
Skritter seems to be a reasonably useful app for some people trying to learn Chinese. But the company’s practices are shady. They charged my credit card without alerting me that the trial period was nearing its end. Although I didn’t find the app as helpful as some others, I might have continued giving it a chance if the developers had notified me that they were about to charge my account. As it is, I have canceled the subscription and will not be using Skritter again.
Otherwise good app held back by video bugs…
This app is in many ways very useful. The hanzi course is generally well made and the core idea is great. The major and very infuriating bug is that the videos don’t seem to buffer properly like other comparable apps. This means you can’t watch videos in a continuous way. Also if you pause it’s often not possible to restart the video at an earlier point. If this issue were sorted in a way similar this app would be far better!
Great App
Skritter is the best app I’ve used to study Chinese.
Pay to learn app
The unpaid version is not very useful. I used to use the old version…but you’re better off buying a textbook tbh
Upgrade?
I really enjoy this application and find it is extremely helpful, however if there was an update / upgrade to include speech recognition and also to enter pinyin that would make this a better application.
Login Issues - Help!
Had some problems logging with my password and reset was not working. I emailed the company and received the automated email back. I have had the app subscription for about four or five years. I use it daily and now I’m waiting for a response and it’s been three days.
Too expensive
Great idea but really excessively expensive. Once you know stroke order, you don’t need a model for each character. And you can practice writing on your phone screen in a free app such as Notes. Chinese is still about memorization however you do it.
Best for Characters
I prefer the flexibility of Anki for most things but if you’re looking to learn to write characters Skritter is awesome.
sadly
I don’t do subscriptions including free trials. I really would like to learn some basics.
Very good app, some extra features would make it great
As a beginner in Chinese, I am really enjoying the app and the user friendly interface. I am currently on the monthly fee and about 20% of the way through their HSK 1 course which has taught me already many of the most useful and common words. One of my favourite features is the information page for each word, where the history and radicals of the characters are explained and a little about how the word is used, as well as an example in a real sentence. Two features I would suggest are added to make this app much more useful for learning - - Have a way to track which words you keep getting forgetting the most, so that these can be specifically targeted for practice. When I complete a test of 100 words and then go to re-test the incorrect ones, I’d like to be able to save these to a new deck to look at later, as I don’t think it’s always ideal to just do them again over and over again straight away but to space out the repetition. - Implement a new reversed test format in which the English word is presented to you and you have to write/remember the Chinese word. This would make the app so much more useful, as it’s one thing to recognise a word/character and another to recall it straight from English. Having been primarily using this app for my learning so far, I can already notice how much better my listening and reading is than my ability to string together sentences, as I havent practiced translating much from English to Chinese, only the other way round. I think this feature would solidify the app as not just a way to learn to write characters but to learn the language. Thanks!
Stay in one device
For a paid app something as basic as syncing between devices is really bad. My ipad, phone and browser all have different numbers of due cards. If I do some during my commute in my phone, later I’ll have to redo them if at home I want to use my computer or tablet, even if I did the cards correctly.
👍👍👍
Finally an app that teaches you how to write characters! Could have given 5 stars if there wasn’t such limited free content, and ALSO a place where you can add your own study decks and characters to learn! Overall really neat, and the free courses were awesome, future looks promising!
Pretty good, minor drawbacks
This app is pretty good for learning how to write or read Chinese. I like it cause it gives you the option to choose between traditional and simplified. One of the drawbacks is that it automatically defaults to HSK 2.0, even though it has HSK 3.0. Another thing is that’s it’s pretty pricey for what it’s worth. The worst thing for me is probably the font it’s in. In the real world in China they use a more blocky font (Heiti, Songti, Mingti) and the one skritter uses is very calligraphy like, where there are nice angles and such (Kaiti), but in the real world instead of that specific angle they just do a 90 degree turn, or maybe just smush everything down so everything is even. An example of this is the word 哪 , in the app the Kou portion is sitting comfortably up in the top left corner. In heiti font it’s thin and reaches from top to bottom. The second part, 冄 , in skritter is pretty evenly spaced. And probably the one that was most difficult for me was 阝, in Skritter (Kaiti) it hangs below the rest of the character, in real life (heiti) it doesn’t. Heiti likes everything evenly spaced. Maybe add like a feature where you can add the font that’s used in mainland China so you can get used to it, cause it’s kinda difficult adapting. Like maybe show it right below the Kaiti font when on the reading and definition, and you can maybe like choose which one (Songti, Mingti, or Heiti). Cause I do understand you need to use Kaiti to learn how to write. But even when trying to learn to read. I’ve been living in China for the past month, and have only been able to recognize maybe a dozen characters due to the real world using Heiti. For comparison it’s like a foreigner in China learning how to read English by learning to read founding father style cursive, but when they actually go to an English speaking country, they realize the world is dominated by Arial and Helvetica. This is not just a problem for the real world, this is also a problem because all formalized online testing systems use Heiti, some of these exams include AP Chinese Language and Culture, HSK, and even AAPPL. Overall pretty good app though. (Edit, changed to 4 stars since the developers actually responded, and it seems like they actually care about feedback compared to some other apps ahem Duolingo, it seems that most of the reviews are responded to, so it’s nice to see that they actually care about their work!🙂)
Money money
Nothing without a subscription. Recommends resources from the developers that are hundreds of dollars. All about the profit.
Sentence practice
Love the app but it would be even better if it had sentence practice modes. E.g ordering words into sentences, filling gaps. To help learn sentence structures and how to form them.
Used to be overpriced, now overpriced and broken.
Skritter has always charged a premium for the actual product it provides, but benefitted from the fact that no one else provided any kind of meaningful competition. Since the most recent update, however, the app no longer recognises correct reviews, recycling the same prompts every single day, no matter if they were previously answered correctly or not. This needs to be fixed urgently or we’ll go from Skritter being the only game in town to there being no game in town. If it’s not resolved within the next week, I will end my subscription and revert to a free alternative.
Very nice app - with some limitations
I really like this app and use it since several years to learn Mandarin. However, there are two major points, I would like to see improved. With these - without a doubt - a five star app. 1. The auto add function does not work and is not Schuttabladeplatzes in the app settings. Even when turned on in the browser version, words are not added automatically. 2. How can I learn specific items only? Even with starred items, there is no possibility to learn these only. What is the benefit of started items then? Thanks for considering that feedback.

Good app
The app is good, customer service excellent, everything well made, but their streak system is too punishing, no way to recover a lost streak, i had a very long one, i lost it, and now i dont want to use the app anymore. I have 6 months left on my subscription and i dont care. I dont want to use it anymore i feel punished by losing that streak. Will try learning french instead.
Excellent tool with unfortunate iOS implementation
Skritter is a truly excellent tool for learning Chinese. It revolutionises the learning of vocabulary. However, the app regularly crashes if the study session exceeds 30-40 mins which results in statistics not being available for that session.
Yay Skritter!!!
The only app I think I’ve ever written a review for because this is truly so legit!!! It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for for SO long as a child of Taiwanese immigrants to the US, who grew up speaking and listening to Chinese but stopped going to Chinese school at a young age and so am basically illiterate 😂 I have been recommending it to my sister, cousins, and friends who are all in the same boat. Also, as someone who went through medical school, I am super familiar with the spaced repetition algo from Anki and I think it is perfectly applied here, bravo!!!! Also shout out to Fiona and Iona, I have been really enjoying the content by them! Especially the Pikmin Bloom, poetic colors and Taiwanese comics videos! I do wish there was a social function to see how my friends and family are progressing in the app. A little motivation via friendly competition! But also totally fine without it!
Unauthorized Charge
I was charged for my 7 day free trial the price of a premium 1 year subscription on the first day of my trial!!
Excellent app. You should use it.
This app is excellent. Definitely worth it for anyone needing to study Chinese. (There is some kind of weirdness around trying to resubscribe if you cancelled your subscription and reinstall the app a year later and resubscribe. If it didn’t waste an hour of my time trying to work out how to get resubscribed after paying I’d give it 5!stars instead of 4. The developers were helpful in hinting what the problem might be, he has two email addresses and the payment attached to a previous account somehow.)
Great App to improve vocabulary
I love this app to improve my vocabulary, but there is some space to improve. -unfortunately this app is only online. So when on the plane. Forget it -you always need a plan to use this app!!! This is a big disadvantage. You should be able to buy your desired decks and always use them offline instead of paying a monthly plan! -also it would be nice to have some kind of ranking or stats, how many new words are learned each day or all time in average,... -if you only want to learn the main HSK decks (without handwriting), you can download the free ANKI or Quizlet App. These apps also use the same space repetition style as Skritter.
really good
This is honestly the best Chinese learning app I've ever used. The subscription is so worth it and it is very helpful for writing, reading, and pronunciation. Genuinely best app for learning chinese.
horrible waste of time
an absolutely awful app unless your paying an insane amount of money, it’s extremely difficult to use and figure out and if you aren’t doing a 100 dollar a year subscription you get nothing infuriating and a wast of time
Great app but writing the tones need to be clearer.
This app is great for learning characters and has loads of decks. Such as remembering simplified hanzi and all the HSK words. Just something for the design, whenever I get to to a screen that tests me on the tone because the character is shown sometimes just cause I’m in the flow I’ll begin to write the character. Then it comes with a big red sign of the tone. If you guys could maybe make it more clear when to write the tones, that would be awesome! Apart from that really enjoying the app and getting stuck in!
Great App but way too slow.
The app itself is a great design and it’s been essential for me to learn Chinese. But it’s sooooo slow, loading the “For Review” cards takes a few minutes sometimes, opening the app is a couple minutes of loading, and rejuvenating a deck can take up to 20... I can download full movies faster than this app can load flashcards. The speed of the app is causing usability issues.. can’t open and spend 5 minutes here or there doing my flashcards because it takes that long to set up and load. Should be a priority to fix...
Good study aide
Helps me keep the characters learned fresh in my memory. Update: I initially used this to keep track of characters learned and for the flash cards. But the courses are also very helpful.
Useless unless you pay
Advertised as free, but you have to pay for a year’s subscription at more than £90 to use any of the facilities. Of course, once you’ve created your account and discovered this they’ve got all your personal details… At the time of writing there are no free decks to use when you create your account. AVOID.
Great. But needs a few updates
I love the app. But there are two things I really wish were added. One simple thing I would like to see is the scores visible next to each section. So if I get 90 percent on a test then when I try to test myself again I can try to beat it. And I also need to know which tests I have completed at 100 percent. The second is I wish I could complete the tests on landscape view on my iPad instead of having to always rotate my iPad. Edit: thanks for the reply. I’m happy to hear landscape is coming. Regarding the lessons, I was referring to the lessons inside the decks. When i do these tests they are always the same, but I need to make a note of my score on some paper. I hope this can change. And thanks for the email address.
Overprized, Unavailability Issues in China
Pro: - good writing interface - good concept - support tries its best, is friendly Con: - relies on western internet (you habe to expect issued in China) - no predownloading of vocabulary (soundfiles sometimes missing, when using the app offline, e.g. on Ipad) - mnemonics for words and characters cannot be seen at same time (你好 does not show mnemonic for 你 and 好） - exporting of words difficult > in the long run you lock yourself in this pricy app - price - spaced repetition algorithm not working as it should (in the old app you could see your due words refreshing often a day, in the new version once you reached 0, you have to wait for the next day) Wishlist: - host app data in Mainland China - fix mnemomnics issue, spaced repetition - user should own data
Useful and fun
Enjoying this way more than I thought
No free trial unless you pay
No free trial unless you pay
Really great app
Great app, definitely what I needed to learn Chinese characters and words. Still on my free trial but will start paying for sure as I intend to continue using it and absolutely recommend it. Only thing I’ll say is that the app still feels a bit new and underdeveloped, would be great if you could type the pinyin when reviewing like on the website for example, and I hope to see other features in the future as well. Must download if you want to learn Chinese characters!
It freezes!!!!!
The application is a great tool for learning Chinese characters. Unfortunately it stopped working on my iPhone!!! After a couple of flashcards it freezes. Help please!!!!
