Usually spot on, sometimes a little off but not by much.
With the correct environmental conditions input and load ballistics the adjustments recommended by the 4DOF are usually spot on from 600 yds in. 538 is the farthest I’ve taken a muledeer with it, but that was a -13 degree decline with a 24 mph crosswind (175 grain Fusion Tipped in 7PRC). The shot was a little high but it dropped him in his tracks. The previous year I took one at 505 yd with an old 30-06 using the 4DOF calculations. When I first started using it, I’d compare its output to my own calculations and it was usually pretty darn close. Outside of 350, I trust the app. more than my own math and use it all the time now. A free way to get environmental conditions if you don’t have a Kestrel or similar instrument to pair with the 4DOF app is to download the Burris Connect app, set up a rifle profile and then press “request environmental data” in the “ballistics” tab. Then type that info. into the 4DOF app. Works for me anyways.
Will not work
It crashed every time you try to select ammunition. I’ve deleted and reloaded the app 3 times and it never fixes the problem. Don’t waste your time on this app.

I’ve historically used Ballistic AE. However I’ve grown fond of this app. It could be a 10/10 if it worked on my Apple Watch as well. AB can’t be the only one out there capable of getting their app to work on smart watches.
Ballistics calculations off
Not entirely sure what happened with the app used to be right on, wanted to use the app when I was at the range because I don’t have a good signal there. Went out to the range and all the calculations were off. I came home, used a calculator on the Internet and found out after inputting my information and everything between the two of them, Hornady app was coming up short every single time for Mia adjustments. I had a printed out 308 ballistic chart and compared the numbers to the Hornady app and again the app had all the wrong information. Not really sure what happened. I’ve used the app in the past and it seemed like it calculated everything pretty darn close but when you are 4 to 5 MOA off then there’s an issue.
Pay options not working
I tried to do the paid upgrades and was charged. However every time I try to use them they want to charge me again. I’ve closed out the app and even deleted and reinstalled with the same issue. I ended up getting a refund from apple.

It would be so sick
The app doesn’t even launch right after it’s done downloading. I’ve tried restarting my phone, uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times. I’ve tried launching in airplane mode on different WiFi and even switching my data plan (dual simming) it still doesn’t launch. I am using the up 15 base model. I got 26.4 installed as well.
Very good but a little limiting
Tried out the 4dof and love the idea of an angular zero, but the app is pretty restrictive to Hornady loads. They are open to others, but the library is limited and the regular ballistic calc is meh. Switched to their group analysis feature after ballistic x pushed an update that ruined their app. Hornadys version is great. If devs read these, would you please add a feature to put multiple POA / groups on a single photo without having to re-enter all the other data? If not, a button to let you delete all impacts at once (rather than one by one) so you can change the POA again would be a decent consolation. Again, would love for you to toll out the angular zero for the regular ballistic calc as well. Thanks!
Unreliable without connectivity
Missed an opportunity at a monster whitetail since I needed calculations for 750yds with windage (my written card only went to 650yds and no wind). My bad for being over-reliant on this app. Don’t do the same!!
It sort of does the job
It crashes often and doesn’t seem to want to remember my login but it does do the job most of the time
The only brand I shoot
I have used Hornady bullets and ammo for over 30 years and I know when the trigger is squeezed and my Hornady leave the barrel there will be meat on the ground. I love your 325 grain XTP 490 Ruger ammo, it has taken a few Russian boat and a boatload of deer with my Taurus Raging Bull revolver.You keep doing your thing and I’ll take care of the rest.
Won’t login
Loved the app in the past . Bought several load information but now can login even with reset. Total waste of money. Should have just bought hard manual
No Bluetooth
Ballistics solver works great, only complaint is attempting to pair my kestrel, it says Bluetooth is off when it most assuredly is.
Bad App Update
This app worked great until an apparent recent update. Now the “edit variables “ option is not there to change muzzle velocities. ( 308 to 300wm for example). The app now randomly crashes on my iPhone.
It’s useless if it’s proprietary
I get that it’s a Hornady App, but we should still be able to find other loads from other outfits.

Hornady technician was very knowledgeable, courteous and helpful.
No help
Shooting solution is way off. It won’t let me manually enter the correct point of impact so additional yard calculations will also be off.
Hard to find bullets
There are some bullets that are easy to find because they’re named specifically and then other bullets are not, or you have to dig deep to find them. They should all be in order of bullet size and then put them in order of ballistic coefficient. Best to worst.
Issues
The ballistic app portion works fine. The group analysis side needs lots of work. The app makes you press the add a picture button, then select from take a picture or from phone memory. Then do you want to add a picture? YES! Selecting a picture has redundant buttons. Then the app crashes all the time with my phone (IPhone 16 pro) I currently cannot open group analysis anymore. It just crashes the app. It needs a way to delete targets in bulk. Resetting the password also takes days for the email to arrive if ever. I had to call in to reset my password. Whoever is in charge of this app has some work to do.

Great app but…
Love the app and use it all the time but there are a couple of really annoying things about it. One being i wish we could set up the rifle once and then have load profiles under the rifle, instead of creating a new profile for that rifle for each load. The other thing is the keyboard layout, why cant we just use the standard layout, having the @ symbol on the main KB makes inputing info really annoying.

No option for zero height…bummer.
The option for zero height would be nice. eg. 2” high at 100yd. Other than that app works well. Have not used any paid functions yet. Had to start app a couple times to get past splash screen.

Won’t run on IOS
This is a great app, useful. Rated 4 stars due to the issues of starting the app on iPhone 12 promax. The software keeps crashing on start-up multiple times other than that it eventually starts.
Slow to load, clunky interface
App is very slow to load, the user interface is clunky and not intuitive. No option for zeroing weather/variable temps with powders. Many extra features like group size calculator etc, but lacking on the actual user interface. Overall: frustrating to use, slow and overloaded.
Doesn’t work without wifi/good cell service
Mine won’t open the app without wifi/cell signal for some reason. Drives me nuts I can’t open the app when I’m out in the woods but as soon as I get back to good signal it works.

Frustrating
This is a frustrating app. Sometimes it doesn’t work. You can only use some Hornady bullets in the program. You can’t use all their bullets even though you bought their bullets. No sst no soft point spritzers and no other company bullets. I liked using Strelok but apple (iPhone) doesn’t let you get Strelok.
Needs work
Takes ages to load. And have to keep uninstalling it and re-installing it because it keeps dropping the data from the range card.
It WAS a great app
When it used to work it was by far the best free ballistic app I could find. Now it won’t even load on my iPhone. Wish someone would fix it!!!
Good but could use work
Great app for ballistics however there could be some improvements. The app takes a long time to open and when creating a ballistic profile the solution chart cannot be made in mils as far as I can see. Change the settings to mrad then once I click the ballistic table it changes back to MOA.

Lost all of my calculations
Have had calculations stored in this app for years. Went to use it today while hunting and ALL of my data was gone. It said I needed to register for an account to save data. It’s good until you actually need it.
Works well, but why can’t I set my target cards to metric ranges?
Target cards seem to always use yard ranges, but I work in metric and have the app setup for metric. I have been unable to find a way to change this. Other than that, it seems intuitive enough. It paired up with my Kestrel no problem, and with a bit of googling and caliper usage my rifle was entered right away.

I like the app, but it’s been hard to get into from the Home Screen, it will kick you off a couple times then let you in.

4 DOF and Podcast
I really want to tell you how much I value the APP. I have entered several favorites and in certain conditions I actually have found that it’s a bit more exact when I compare results from my Revic rangefinder, especially if I take the time to enter atmospherics more exactly. Lastly I truly enjoy the podcast, I learn something every time. The banter between the participants make it a great experience. Thank you all.

Limitations
First of all I must say Hornady customer support is tops, friendly and fast response, Now to the app itself, good concept, very useful if you shoot long distances, However, I personally had problems with the app crashing, which I downloaded the paid version fromApple store, after using it a few times and updating it, it would not open past the first page, I had to remove the app from my iPhone which unfortunately erased all the data I had recorded in, I could not retrieve this data even after signing into my account, customer service were fast in replying and courteous, I asked if I could download the data into a file or export it to my PC, there to is an issue, it can not be done at this moment, the only option is take screenshots of the data, on both issues I was told they would be communicating these concerns to their app developer for future updates, let’s hope they do as I like Hornady and their products, for the time being I am only giving 3stars
