FBReader
I love your application. The interface is simple. I would love to see PDF support. Otherwise, that is very smooth the use. Keep up with great updates. Thank you
Doesn’t support batch importing. Dropping this app completely.
It may sound dramatic, but after realizing you can only import books one at a time I’m changing my review to 1 star. Every other reader does this fine, but FBReader simply does not support it without using a desktop computer. 1/5 dont recommend.
Almost on Par
Been a user on Android for well over a decade. Good to see so many features supported here! Just a few missing features that I'd like to see, though (assuming I buy the premium version for full library support, that is): rotation options and a light/dark mode button that can both be independent from system settings, somewhere to see bookmarks across all books, and an option to use the old-style footer progress indicator (the box(es) with a transparent background). Would love to see these gaps filled soon!
Missing shift-select text
First thing I tried to do didn’t work, immediately uninstalled. I needed to copy a couple pages to the clipboard. No luck, you can’t shift-select text. App *only* allows you to highlight what you can see within your current view.
Stupidest timeline
You would think following numerical order would be easy for apps but they all seem to had an aneurysm so the go 1 thens tens then two.
Still the best
Been using FBReader since I had the original Apple IPad Air. It still works 10 years later in Apple, Android and PC. I just upgraded to a galaxy tab 10+ and it still works like a champ
With iOS 26 crashes and slow
Crashes many times a day now. Also I have to wait several seconds for the book page to open when switching apps. This is quite a regression.
Good!
Please add an option to upload or change a book cover. It would be very helpful!
Bad design, multiple bugs
FBReader suffers from poor design decisions and a number of recurring bugs that negatively impact the overall user experience. Basic interactions feel unintuitive, and the app does not always behave as expected. Additionally, support is slow and unresponsive, making it difficult to resolve issues in a timely manner.
No PDF Support
Looks like it could’ve been a great solution, but the surprising lack of native PDF support means it’s not suitable for my needs
Quality app with lots of features
I tried this app primarily because I was looking for a solution for syncing my library and reading progress between my iPhone and an Android eink device. Syncing works great! I was initially put off by the default appearance of the reading mode, but a bit of tinkering in the extensive settings got things tailored to my liking. I do wish basic text settings like font and margins were available directly from the reading view so you could see the results as you adjust them, but a few trips back and forth to the settings eventually got things looking very Kindle-like, which I prefer. I appreciated that almost everything could be tweaked, even the appearance of the progress indicator. Most importantly, this app gets the basics right, and on so many platforms it’s kind of insane. I’ve installed FBReader on Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and Linux. It’s probably not the absolute best reading app on any platform, but it’s the only good option that is available nearly everywhere. Books and progress sync fast, and use your own Google Drive space so they don’t charge a subscription. Despite its somewhat ugly defaults and strange UI choices, I’m grateful this app exists.
Completely useless
For such a simple application this is just flat out useless as an iPad reading solution. The vertical scrolling option is so jerky it gives me headaches. Don’t waste your time, find something better
Great app, just needs one tweak!
This is a great app to put all your ebooks on it. Two things that it is missing which are essential to a good library is: 1) The ability to keyword search all or a group of the books in your library. Currently only keyword search is availabe for the current book you're in. 2) The ability to organize the books in some way. ie. cookbooks, fiction, etc. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!
what is going on?
I can’t even open the app. It started a few days ago. And you still didn’t solve the problem. I always consider this app as the best one, but not now. Hope you will do something about it.
Needs custom shelves
Help contents say sync supports custom shelves but there is no way to create one on iPhone.
Best Cross-Platform Synced Reader
I looked high and low for an app that could sync my reading position quickly and easily between my Android eink reader, my iPhone, and my Mac. This is the only app I found that supports all those platforms, plus several more like Windows and Linux. I don’t love the default text appearance settings but it has a full featured options and I was able to get it dialed in the way I like. The cloud syncing features are smartly implemented using your own Google Drive space and don't require a separate subscription. It's not the absolute best ereading app on any platform, but it's the ONLY good-enough one that is on ALL the platforms.
Disappointed with this app
Please add a text to speech feature for this app. I paid for the upgrade to help improve the app. Would really appreciate that feature. Thank you.
Best I’ve found, but...
I’ve only played with this briefly but so far it seems excellent. Nice page turn animation and customisable margins, both of which I think are important. But why does it say the developer may collect "user content"? That sounds sketchy.
it‘s too old
It was the best reading software I've ever used more than 10 years ago, but it's too old for now, and some of the experiences are still the same as in the past, which can't be adapted to today's mobile phones, especially Apple's mobile phones. For example, in the page flip, up and down page flip is as difficult to use as the computer crash, and can not batch select files, the ui interface is also very old!
Sorts by author correctly.
But I can't add covers to my downloaded stuff from AO3. (I create my own covers in Phonto for things that don't have covers of their own.) Give me cover-setting and I'd buy it...
A World-Class App?
In a world where cheap knock-off ebook readers abound, this one stands out like a shining beacon of competency. No greedy “subscriptions!” Yay! Just an honest price for a great program. There really is no downside to this functional, versatile app and it’s well designed user interface. It took a LONG time to find the best. You don’t have to. Just try the free version and you’ll be buying the full version in no time. But … In spite of all the things it does well, there is one glaring feature omission: something it apparently doesn’t do at all. It does not read to you. For the price, this is puzzling. It’s even more puzzling in that the iPhone contains literally dozens of excellent voices. It can even be configured so that screens are audibly read to you. So then, developers, I ask you: How hard can it be to bridge your excellent app to the iPhone native voice synthesis features and create an ebook reader that actually reads? And why has this not been introduced? We want it. Take an already great product and make it world class. But don’t raise the price. For that price it should already have text to speech capability.
Good reader but
Probably the best alternative reader coming from Android, BUT there is a huge but, for some books, when I press the book it crashes before it opens, is it a free version issue? I don’t want to buy it and then face the same issue. Please help.
Sorting books
I like the app. It is simple to use. I’ve been looking for something I was using before smartphones got so popular. And it matches my expectations. Tho only thing I would add is sorting books, ability to make folders. At least I would appreciate to have the chance to separate the books already read from those still in reading progress.
good epub reader, not good bookreader
As an app to read epubs, FBReader gets 5 out of 5. As an app to read "books", FBReader gets a 2 out of 5. This review will be based on reading epubs on an ipad mini. As an epub reader, FBReader is great. Page rendering is reasonably fast once loaded, and no unusual blank or missing pages so far. The data read on an initial load or resume after being swapped out can lead to a UI freeze, but this is not frequent (unless it's constantly being swapped out I suppose). Most of the expected settings are easily set: font family and size, line height, etc. Lots of good settings to make reading more enjoyable. I also like that font size can be changed directly while reading without delving into the settings. The immediate font-change feedback is appreciated. An unexpected setting is flexible margins. Imagine a reader who wants uneven margins (like a book) where the outer margin is larger so the thumb can rest and not obscure text. I am personally a fan of top-heavy margins (less space on top, more space on bottom) so the text does not fall off the bottom of the screen. Independent margin settings is a nice touch. FBReader is also one of the few readers that allow tap on both left and right margins to turn to the next page. Overall, lots of different ways to tweak and fine-tune the reading experience without wading through a scary amount of screens. The only issue I've had is some of the settings use a sideways toggle (o--) vs (--o) without a clear indication of which side is enabled/on or disabled/off. As an app to read and manage books, FBReader is not great. Book handling by the app is very clunky. First, adding books is inconsistent. FBReader has google drive synchronization with a web client. The sync seems to work only one way, or is very flaky and unreliable. If I load a book through the web client, it will appear in the app. If I locally load a book via share sheet, it does not appear on the web client. As I understasnd it, the google drive integration is how book/bookmark synching is handled. I didn't use another device to test this, but I am skeptical since the book itself does not appear. Second, there is no human mechanism to organize books. For ios, FBReader can only group books by recency (recently opened, recently downloaded, etc), author, and title. There is also an option to group by series, but I could not get this mechanism to trigger. Looking around online, there are references to custom "bookshelves", but it seems to only exist in the android version of the app. Third, it is difficult to get basic book information in the library without opening the book itself. It's easy to bulk import books via web client, but good luck tracking what has been read. There is a read indicator if the books are listed in "tile" view. However, only the cover art is shown and the title itself may be difficult to read. On my ipad mini, the tile view of the cover art is a blue blob next to a green blob. Fourth, the reading controls invite mishaps. While reading, the UI to show the table of contents, go to the library view, and import books are all next to each other in the top left corner of the screen. I am constantly mis-tapping things since they are all right next to each other. Fifth, bookmarks are incredibly clunky. FBReader bookmarks are based on word(s) and not a page. To create a bookmark, tap and hold to select a word, optionally extend the highlighted text, and then tap "bookmark" from the text selection dialog. There's no obvious indicator on how to create a bookmark (eg, no onscreen bookmark icon); I only discovered this by accident. Comparing the free vs purchased versions, I can load more than 10 books at a time. However, without better book management features, I find it difficult to handle more than 5 books or so. I also get integrated google or deepl translate. It works by selecting 'translate' from the selection options after highlighting text. It seems to work fine, but it doesn't seem that much better than "copy" and pasting the snippet into google translate or whatever directly. It would be more helpful if there was an option to translate an entire page, or translate on-the-fly on page turns. Bottom line: good reader, but everything else around it is not so great. For me, not worth the purchase.
Basic
I would rate it higher if I can use the mac's dictionary lookup feature within the app itself. Instead, it automatically highlights the text. There's also a lag spike on the animation when swiping with the trackpad, which can get irritating. Finally, when it's set as the default app for epubs retrieved from the internet, it simply won't let you open the file since Mac is unable to verify if it's a malware.
无法恢复内购

old and annoying bug
To delete more than one book from the library, you need to completely close the application after deleting the first book and log in again. If you don't do this and try to delete two books in a row, then when you delete the second one, you will delete not the one you selected, but the book that is higher in the list... And you can only hope that you have a good memory, since you won't be able to get it back. There is not even a "recently deleted" section. This bug has been unfixed for a year or two.
Great reader overall
I would give this reader all five stars if it were not for one annoying bug that was not fixed during last three or four updates: when I use the phone in portrait mode to read a book, if I accidentally turn it into landscape mode, the reader switches to the new orientation smoothly. However, when I turn it back into portrait mode, the page is misformatted with margins too wide, and page corrupted as a result. it takes two page turns for the problem to correct itself. Therefore, I am forced to go back a page, and then come back to the original page before I can continue reading. This is seem to be a pretty obvious problem, and should be easy to fix, but that has not happened. it seems like a minor problem, but it can be quite annoying when it happens a dozen times per day. Hopefully they will fix it in one of the next releases.
Premium
I purchased premium several years ago. The proof of which I cannot find. Without that proof, do you keep records of people who have purchased premium? I had my entire collection of books on FB reader, which were in the hundreds, now I can’t get any more than 10 books. All but 10 are grayed out. It just happened. This is very frustrating. How do I get premium back. How do I get all those books back. Thanks for any response.
It is not enough
Now, it is just a demonstration, compared with Android.
It’s perfect.
I love it.

Great no frills reader, but with room to improve
Really great simple reader - the menu and options are unobtrusive and easy to navigate. Really great margin and spacing customization which a lot of the other epub readers dont have. My biggest hang up is that there doesnt seem to be a way to mark read and unread book or mark them as completed. Otherwise, a really strong and great app!
What is with the horrible control
It is such a pain trying to open a book from a list to read.there help section useless you that would be a frequently asked question. But this keeps getting worse as time goes on.
Good, but has some weird glitches
First off, this is the best app on the market if you don't want to kowtow to Kindle's market dominance. It lets you sync your books between all devices. Cool! But it's still a work in progress. My book progress syncs, but the sections (recently downloaded, recently opened) do not. I have to go to the normal intro page, download the book, then open it and I see my current reading progress. Just doesn't make sense why you can't sync the recently opened section and set the mobile app to automatically download it. The app is pretty barebones. That's a good thing overall. But it is lacking a handful of useful features to get 5 stars from me. Sadly, there isn't much competition for crossplatform reading like this, so FB Reader is the best solution at the current moment.
Awesome!!!
I’ve been looking for an app that allows for easy access to my collection of ebooks. This is the app. It is much better than Google books and iBooks. It has lots of customization and navigation features and is easy to set up. Highly recommend it
Was great until before the they added ads
I used fbreader for years until until the ads started. That was a show stopper for me.
Good app, but problem with highlighting
I really like this app. It’s free and easy to use, but in the past you could highlight sections then go back to said highlighted sections. However with the new iOS 16 update you can no longer do that. Really love the app in general though.
Fast reader but Library has issues!
The eBook reader itself is fast and simple. But there is no option to remove an eBook from the library without also deleting from the file system. This is contrary to most eBook readers and a big deal breaker! I really don't want to accidentally delete any of my books. Uninstalled sadly!
Good reader, with limitations
Good reader, easy to use, but cannot load books via iTunes, and no provision for organizing books into collections or shelves.
Works after update
Thank you for making this app work for ios 9 after all this time but since the last update (30th March 2020) it just stopped working. Please can you fix this? Edit: You guys listened and fixed it. Thank you very much, it really means a lot.
ONLY 6 BOOKS
So this might be a good app if only they could add more books there is only 6 out of the millions out there so no variety please add more
latest update completely broke text formatting
all text is massive now and seems to not tespond to settings in any way that makes sense - basically broken now iphoneX - user for a couple of years
No
A Mac app in name only. "Poorly featured" is an understatement.
No way to bookmark
For some reason I can’t bookmark anymore. It’s been a while sinc I used this app and I used to love it. But now I can’t highlight or bookmark anymore.
Excellent
I have been using this app for years. Simply the best. No flashy design, it just works!
Too many freezes
I’ve used this app for the last year or 2 without any problems. Then the last several months it seems to get stuck and freeze up. I can’t page forward or back. Can’t do anything. Finally figured out how to open it to the main library screen and delete the book. I opened the file on my PC and it seems to be a special character or graphic on the next page that is causing the problem. This never happened before and now it’s occurring on almost every book. Must be something in the latest update. It’s just not worth it to use this app anymore. More trouble than it’s worth.
Good app
This app so good but i can't copy ebook from my itunes (File Sharing)!
Can full edition read pdf format?
Was an Excellent Reading App until IOS 16.1
Update: I have reduced my rating to 3 stars as I have asked the developer if there is an update for the app as there are problems on IOS 16.1 and was given an abrupt reply. Once books are added to the app you will find it a perfect way to read on your iPhone and iPad. It is very customisable to your taste
