Essential tool for language learners
This is an essential tool for people who are learning a foreign language or who want to have a better understanding of their native language. For me, the new Matching Game teaches humility.
Sorry but no!
I'm sorry if this sounds impolite, but seeing the inside of someone's mouth - teeth, tongue, tonsils - while they're speaking - nope, put me right off! I know we need to learn the pronunciation somehow, but this absolutely doesn't work for me! I think this sort of thing would be better done with graphics, but not a real human...
not a fan of the new ui
the new ui is alright but I prefer the old version as it was much easier to use especially on phone
No Audio???
When I play the videos there are no audio at all. Just lip movements. Is this how it is supposed to be?
Stop using those symbols.
How about creating a chart using just letters. People will understand more quickly.

Thanks so much for the incredible amount of work it took to create a tool that both documents and teaches the IPA. So far this seems the best tool for developing an understanding of vocal language as defined by IPA. I’m excited by the learning possibilities!

I prefer the old version
Previous versions felt good. Now, after the update, it doesn’t feel as convenient as before. I still prefer the old version, where there was a control bar at the top, allowing me to turn the video on and off freely. Also, it seems like the sound only works with headphones now.
Audio not working
The audio isn't working anymore though the video is. Was really helpful but not so much now. Please fix.

I saw a suggestion that the matching game have settings to only do phonemes from specific languages. I think that’d be excellent. I would go further and make settings to only use certain columns and rows; this would make it easier to begin memorizing for beginners like me. If well executed I would pay for an in app purchase for this functionality. Super thorough app! Especially for being free!
Horrible formatting.
I deleted this app within one minute of trying to use it. I had to power off my phone to get it off of my screen. It would not respond to any touch or command. Then once I re-powered it, I was able to delete it.
Add feature to filter charts by language
Could u potentially add a feature where u can change the chart to only display the sounds from a particular language. I’m studying specifically English sounds and it’s difficult, especially from a beginner perspective to distinguish English and non English sounds

Very excellent
It's very convenient not to have to go to Wikipedia every time I want to go and look up sounds. The zoomable pdf-like display that you can tap on is a very nice interface for tapping out sounds, and going beyond that to show vocal qualities as well is extremely handy.

Bring IPA to the Mac
Please port this app to the Mac silicon chip. I’ve had this app for three years and just got it on iPad and it views much better than iPhone. I find this the best app source unless you need something else like the NATO phonetics. If you could explain more the paid “+” option in the AppStore description.
Decent, but it could use some additions
Adding in example words for the symbols would be a huge help, since sounds out of the context of a word are hard to fully understand. Also, an explanation of other IPA symbols and the elements of a written pronunciation would be nice (things like syllable and emphasis diacritics). The app seems to assume you already know IPA and that you just want to study more.
Nearly perfect
This app exceeded my expectations. I got this app just because I wanted the audio for IPA sounds, but found videos which can have the playback edited, as well as a fun and helpful matching game. My only criticisms are minor, and those are: 1. The interface, though very functional, could benefit from some more organization (for instance, the matching game is not distinct from the general playback area, and only serves to as a tool for confirmation). 2. It would be nice to be able to be able to choice a language and have only those phonemes from that language be accessible, so as to make things more simple and goal-oriented. Also it would serve as a helpful visual. 3. It would be nice also to be able to loop videos, or to choose your own pair of videos to loop so that you can choose a contrast of sounds and really get to know the differences. However, these suggestions are minor, and this app does what it claims to do, and does it well.
sounds are not accurate
Many of the sounds are not segmented down to individual phonemes. Vowel sounds are often attached to the audio models of phonemes that actually don't have them, such as for 'l' and 'r' sounds. This app wrongly adds an 'a' sound to each, which a very common inaccuracy of phonetics apps and resources. Fortunately, there are some apps that are accurate and available in the app store. The concept and design of this app are good, but I'm afraid I can't reommend it to other teachers and my students in its current state.

The videos gross me out! Get some more attractive mouths.
Amazing app!
First I was a bit disappointed on seeing its rough user interfaces. It is not nice but not hard to use. But shortly later I was totally surprised by the number of phonetics it can pronounce. Not only this, the features about controlling the playback videos are extremely useful. Hard to image an indie app can have those features.

This app is thorough, I’ll give them that. Once the camera enters the mouth, that’s when the videos start to get disturbing. Maybe an in-app warning to users that they are going to see the insides of somebodies vocal chords?

This app is amazing. It has so many more sounds than a regular IPA app/chart. I really like being able to see the different views when the sound is being pronounced. I'm a linguistics major and I did use this frequently in my phonetics class. It really helped me memorize the less used and/or non-English sounds. The only problem I have is that if I zoom in to the consonant chart, it sometimes makes it so I can't press any of the characters in the bottom row. Other than that, it's a fantastic app!

If you put in the other affricates & add diacritic descripitions, this app would be perfect.
This is the one to get
Out of all the IPA apps available, this is definitely the one to get. It's very important when you're learning sounds to see the mouth and tongue as it is making the sound. This app shows clearly where the how to make the sound with your mouth and tongue. The sounds each have a very minor differences and these are clearly shown in a way not seen on other apps.
Play All Sounds?
A "play all" function would be a very nice addition to this app, along with a "shuffle all" function. Streamlined listening could improve the learning experience of this app's userbase.

This is the best IPA app that I've found. I just wish you could choose a subset of symbols / sounds to practice in the "play" mode.
Very helpful
Just be aware that you may encounter some down-throat videos of vocal folds when using the matching quiz, or if you tap any of the glottal consonant sounds. Not a complaint, just a warning.
