Description
WayBack remembers where you set off, in the mountains or by the lakes, and shows you the way back to that spot. Once the trip is prepared, it works with no signal.
WayBack is a subscription app. It opens with a 3-day free trial, then USD 1.99 per week or USD 19.99 per year - your choice. You sign in, start the trial in the App Store, and the whole app is yours - there is no cut-down free mode and nothing is held back for a higher tier.
Before you step off the road, tap "I'm heading outdoors". The app drops an anchor at your GPS position and starts recording your walk. From then on the screen shows the two things that matter: the direction to your entry point and how far away it is. Both are calculated on the phone, so they keep working with no mobile data and no coverage.
HOW IT WORKS
Tap once where you leave the road to drop the anchor, or place the entry point by hand on the map if GPS is slow.
Walk. A point is recorded every couple of minutes, which is easy on the battery.
Head back whenever you like: an arrow points at the entry point, with the distance right under it.
Tap "I'm back from outdoors" to finish. The walk is saved to your history with its map, distance and time.
DIRECTION EVEN WITHOUT A COMPASS
While you are moving, the direction comes from your GPS course. Standing still, you can switch on the phone compass. If the device has no compass sensor at all, the app names the side of the world instead - "northwest, 850 m" - which is enough to set off in the right direction.
MAPS THAT WORK OFFLINE
Save map areas before you leave: tap the map to place the area and zoom to set how much it covers, or pick a radius and a level of detail.
Both layers are stored - trails and satellite imagery.
The home screen shows your current position on the map, so you can see where you are and save that area with one tap.
Open the app with no connection at all and a built-in offline screen takes over: the anchor, the arrow, the compass and the saved map still work.
YOUR WALKS
History keeps every finished walk with its track on the map, the distance covered and the time spent out there. Walks belong to your account, so they are still there on your next phone.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Recording keeps going with the phone in your pocket and the screen off, so the path is whole when you turn around. It runs only between "I'm heading outdoors" and "I'm back from outdoors" - never outside a walk - and iOS shows its blue location indicator while it does. Stretches with no recording are drawn as a dashed line on the map.
The trial is set up once while you still have a connection, because the App Store needs the network for it. After that WayBack works out there with no signal at all.
WayBack is a simple aid for finding your way back, not a replacement for a paper map, a compass, or telling somebody where you are going.
