Description
FirstChair is an on-device AI practice coach for school band and orchestra wind players. Between lessons, when you practice alone, it sits beside you and shows your intonation, rhythm, and tone in real time — like a small teacher in your phone.
WIND INSTRUMENTS SUPPORTED
Flute, Bb Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Bb Trumpet, and Trombone. FirstChair knows each instrument's transposition and comfortable range, with long-tone, scale, arpeggio, and chromatic exercises pre-loaded in the keys school bands actually use.
REAL-TIME FEEDBACK
As you play, the screen shows how many cents you are above or below the target pitch. Rhythm is visualized against a metronome — are you rushing or dragging? Long-tone stability is scored from your amplitude and pitch variance. All of it is computed on-device, in milliseconds, using a YIN pitch detector and DSP scorers.
AUTO PRACTICE TIME
The timer only counts when you are actually playing. Take a break and it pauses automatically. Daily minutes accumulate, build streaks, and roll up into weekly progress. "I practiced 30 minutes today" stops being a guess.
TEACHER-READY WEEKLY REPORT
At the end of the week, FirstChair summarizes your per-day minutes, average intonation accuracy, and improvement over the previous week into a single shareable report. One tap — Send to Teacher — and it's done.
AI COACH
The coach reads your week's data and proposes a concrete next session: "Upper-register pitch is trending sharp this week — try this long-tone for five minutes tomorrow." On iOS 26 devices, FirstChair uses Apple's on-device Foundation Models LLM. On older devices, a deterministic rule-based coach takes over so nothing is missing.
PRIVACY-FIRST
Recorded audio is analyzed and discarded — it never leaves the device. No tracking, no ads, no analytics SDKs. Your child's practice is theirs alone.
