Description

What The Wind? is a playful wind and weather app that helps you understand what the wind is actually doing around you.

See where the wind is coming from, where it is blowing to, how strong it is, how gusty it feels and what that means in plain English. Instead of staring at confusing arrows and numbers, What The Wind gives you a live wind compass, wind map, saved locations, nearby observation sources and human-readable explanations with a bit of personality.

Set any location using map search, check your current location, browse nearby wind conditions or save places you care about. Whether you are checking the wind at home, near the coast, at an airport, on a cycling route or somewhere you plan to visit, What The Wind makes wind direction and wind speed easier to understand.

What The Wind is great for:

Anyone who wants to know which way the wind is actually blowing

Live Wind Compass

The main compass shows wind direction that makes sense in the real world. See where the wind is coming from, where it is blowing to and how that relates to the direction you are facing.

At a glance, you can see:

Wind direction

Current wind speed

Gust speed

Beaufort force

Weather With Personality

Choose how the app talks to you with selectable Wind Voice styles. Keep it simple and practical, make it fun, go nerdy with bearings and details or turn on rude commentary if you want the weather to have attitude.

Weather does not have to be boring.

Wind Map

Explore wind around you using the built-in map. View forecast points, nearby observation stations, searched places or a combination of sources.

Locations and Saved Places

Search for towns, cities and places using Apple Maps, then check wind conditions for that location.

You can save places you care about and quickly check them later. Saved locations can show wind speed, gusts, wind direction, weather summary, humidity, temperature, distance and update status.

Weather Sources

What The Wind can use multiple weather and wind data sources depending on location and availability.

The app can automatically choose the best available source, or you can manually inspect and select a source where available. If a selected source is unavailable, What The Wind can fall back automatically.

Customisable

Adjust the app to suit how you read weather data.

Settings include:

Wind speed units

Temperature units

Beaufort display

Humidity and gust display

App colour theme

Wind Voice style

Weather source preferences

Automatic best-source selection

Forecast and source status

Compass Accuracy Note

Compass accuracy depends on your device, movement and the magnetic field around it. Accuracy may be affected by cars, metal objects, buildings, magnets, electrical equipment or other interference.

For the best direction reading, hold your iPhone away from large metal objects and allow the compass a moment to settle.

Privacy

What The Wind? uses your location while the app is in use to fetch local wind and weather data, align the compass, search nearby places and show relevant map information.

Saved locations and settings are stored locally on your device. The app does not include ads, account sign-in, subscriptions, purchases, analytics SDKs or third-party crash-reporting SDKs.
