Description

BirdUp is a birding companion built for Australia, a field notebook, a field guide, and a "what's around me right now" scout in the one app.

See a bird, log it in seconds. Pick the species yourself or snap a photo and let BirdUp suggest one. Each sighting holds the spot, the time, your photos, the count, the behaviour, and a note if you want one. The first time you record a species it becomes a lifer and joins your life list — the running tally birders keep for life.

No signal? Doesn't matter. BirdUp is built offline-first, the way real birding works. Out in the wetlands, deep in a national park, somewhere past the last bar of reception — your sightings save to your phone straight away and sync themselves the moment you're back in range. Nothing waits. Nothing's lost.

Not sure what you're looking at? The photo identifier isn't a generic image search. It knows what actually lives where you're standing, this time of year — narrowing 800-plus Australian species down to the birds you're realistically seeing, so the suggestions make sense.

Open Explore to see what's being spotted near you, with heatmaps you can filter by species and month — handy for working out where the Gang-gangs are turning up this winter before you plan a trip. Or check Nearby Species for a ranked list of what you're likely to find right where you are, with the ones you've already seen marked off. Seasonal migrants like the Rainbow Bee-eater only show up when they're genuinely about.

Every bird has a proper species page: identification tips, field marks, the calls, seasonality, habitat, distribution maps, diet and conservation status — all readable offline, so the guide works wherever you do.

A few more things worth knowing:

A gentle daily streak that nudges, never nags

Time-boxed events with live leaderboards, for when you fancy a bit of friendly competition

Threatened and sensitive species are automatically blurred on the map. Your patch and the birds both stay protected

Photo location data is stripped on upload, and any sighting can be kept private

Sound ID early access with constant improvements
