10/10 would recommend, would use again
Read sci-fi or fantasy books for free that people are writing, or finished writing. The app is polite about ads, and allows you to pick how you want them displayed. You can change the color and font of the book for better legibility too! And they’re always making updates and patches to make it better. (Continue slaying dev team) If you don’t know where to start, look it up on Reddit the genre you like to read and RR. They’ll give you recs. Or, read “mother of learning”! It’s my favorite ❤️
Stuffed with full screen scummy ads with time locks
Stuck in ad loop bouncing back and forth - do yourself a favor and either use the web app or another site
Missing only one thing
This app desperately needs a function where it will read out chapters. Another cool edition might be a way for authors to upload audio recordings of the chapter. The app isn’t particularly friendly toward the visually impaired. I’m not a big fan of AI, but helping the disabled does seem like a halfway decent use of it. So they should totally allow audio file uploads, and have a section where you can have an AI read it to you if there is no audio upload. Hopefully the developers will see this.
Platform has problems
For being an app about writing and reading stories rroyal road is so incredibly biased towards the authors that they can ban you from commenting or reviewing their stories just by you commenting on one of there stories. So in short, anything short of a glowing review quickly gets you banned from even reviewing their stories story.
Clunky
The app works but is very clunky. It’s better than the website but just barely.
Good enough
It is a good place to find books that are currently being written
Obnoxious Ads
Just today it looks like the Royal Road app launched some new ads between chapters. They are extremely cumbersome to dismiss. Go back to old ad system or I am gone.
Read, but don’t review
It’s a really good platform to find interesting stories I would recommend using the app and website, but I would not recommend leaving reviews. It seems that well thought out constructive criticism is bad, especially if the review encourages the author to keep creating but maybe don’t rely heavily on AI to write stories for them. This is apparently insulting, disrespectful and discourages them from writing. Just read the story, don’t let the writer know if there are issues, it’s better for them that way.
Please fix the app
I love royal road because I’m writing but it pains me that it keeps on logging me out so I resort on the website instead and there’s issues there too while using mobile.
not great
I prefer using the website to the app. I find it a lot better less glitches and I'm more used to using the website.
Favorite app
Best app I have.
Get banned for critical reviews
Is there a way to give negative stars? This app will ban you if you give authors anything but good reviews. Critical about how the author writes about a character.. banned! Critical about how a reviewer reviews him.. Banned! How long is the ban?? 50 years lol I highly recommend you don’t use this app. If you absolutely need to .. don’t buy their premium. Apple.. maybe ban this app? 😂
Was great but now freezes in chapter
I was reading a few chapters of many authors every day but now it freezes in chapter and it makes it unpleasant to work with. I have to delete the app and reinstall it daily for the last 2 days.
Update crashes
The new update just recently released crashes the app. When you try to open a story and try to scroll down, it gets stuck like that. Even after you reinstall the app, it’s still the same for any story you open or read. Please fix this
My opinion
Until I learn how to use you and actually can use you what you say is what you get in ratings I’m sorry but I don’t give ratings either above that so I know if it’s gonna work for me
Decent stories to find.
I love chicks coors light and cheesecake
Go somewhere else
Mods intentionally prevent reviews on writing. Go to another site, the mods for this site are obviously big on censorship.
Needs a fix
App has been good, but the “Urgent Fix” of version 2.14 has broken it on my phone.
Full screen unskippable ads
You’ve got to be joking me, I get ads every time I click on next chapter. If the chapters are short, you’re constantly seeing ads that take up the whole screen and you have to let them play out before you can close them. Like I understand that revenue is important for the upkeep but this is ridiculous. Even WebNovels app isn’t this intrusive with its ads.
Accessibility
I am a blind user who uses the VoiceOver screen reader on an iPhone. I have just started to use the app not long ago, and I have noticed some unlabeled buttons that make it harder to use the app. The App still is usable, and I’m able to listen to books, but if you can fix these unlabeled buttons, then the app would be a lot easier to recommend to other blind people like myself.
Perfect app, thank you
After reading cradle I inevitably stumbled upon royal road and web novels. What a delight that this exists. Free to use and very reasonably priced to pay for and get offline reading etc. couldn’t sing higher praise
I Love Royal Road But…
I have used this app and the website before it for years. I love reading stories on it and used the app ever since it came out. However recently the app has become literally unusable. The app just wont load anything. I can’t even try to login. I just have to use the website like before. I have already made a bug report. I hope the issue is fixed soon.
AU-Gordon
The recent changes removed my preferred text to speech voice. Nystagmus can make it difficult to focus for a long duration on texts, especially on a mobile device. It was disheartening to see the removal of said audio. Nevertheless, the software is decent and I appreciate the focus on improvement. I enjoy the story centered design. Thank y’all for creating a platform that brings readers and authors closer together!
Potential but the ads are terrible.
The apps design and frameworkpretty good. It has a better ui than the website for the follow/read later/liked and the search function with the tags is better. The access the reading history is also rather useful when keeping up to date with multiple stories at once. Also the ability to download chapters with premium so you can read them without wifi is a godsend. However the ads make it inferior to the website. You either choose banner ads that flicker the whole time with bright colours (also a few fake imitation ads imitating other content). Annoying but bearable. (This stays at the top of your screen). However, now to make it worse they play unmutable audio (unless you want to listen to nothing while reading). The entire time you are in the app. The alternative is a usually 30 second ad between chapters which given the length of chapters in a lot of stories makes it feel like more ads than watching cable. Then when you compare it to the website where the ads are only at the top of the page, and the majority of the time user based ads about stories that you may be interested in instead of random gambling/scam ads. The choice is clear.
!!URGENT!! Bug Fix did not work
Hey guys please read the Bug Fix on the newest update has still not worked. On iPhone 17 pro. Latest ver 26.2.1 if you open app onto chapter and don’t immediately hide the settings bar and chapter title and try and scroll the page freezes immediately and you cannot do anything until you restart the app. The only way to continue using it is to fullscreen then scroll. If you don’t do this then it will once again freeze the app without fail I’ve tried everything T_T
Great spot to put a novel
I love the format and community here. It’s awesome! Wish uploading chapters was a bit less clunky, but great overall. Check out Transcendent: Ultra!
RR cut Apple
Signed in only via Apple ID. RR now requires a separate ID linked to Apple ID. No way to contact support and lost all progress.
Audio mode update disappointing
The last update removed one of the voice modes that was okay to listen too. I would like better AI voice options to make listening easier.
Meh, Not that great.
As someone who had programmed my own app for Royalroad I was quite excited when I heard that an official app would be coming out. Especially when this would be by Royalroad team themselves and would thus work far more efficiently than my own. It is a shame then that the main reason that I would want an app for this website, to be able to read offline, is locked behind a paywall. I would be fine with a one time payment, but having to pay monthly for a feature that other apps can do without paying, no thanks. I hope you guys find success with this app, but this isn’t for me.
I want more readers
I enjoy this app/website but I’m sad because i want more readers and i really want to get my book published (read my book The Angel’s Heart and the Devil’s Soul” by NJstar)
. The best app ever
Easy read ap e A
I can’t read anything
The app just crashed….
Audio needs a little work
Great app, but it’s really, really difficult if you want to back up at all, you can hit the back up button 10 times and back up maybe 5 seconds. I have tried using the home button on my iPad so that I have to use the back up from the home screen and I have also tried it within the app. It is all useless. Almost the “best” I have found is to back up to the previous chapter, then go forward and start the whole dang chapter over if I have missed something…
App has good content but broken navigation
The back button is totally borked in a recent update. Which wouldn’t be a big deal if they didn’t also have easytouch ads on the edge of your screen, now you can’t return to your place in the book.
Love it
As a writer this app has helped me write consistently. Adding and publishing chapters is fairly easy and seing readers following my story is very encouraging. Give it a try
way too many adds now
I love the actual format/content of royal road- but they I recently updated my phone and the new version of royal road I downloaded sucks. I don’t mind the right amount of adds- but this is way too many. And they are the type where I have to sit and wait and can’t just click through. it feels like the site got bought by some third party who immediately said how can we maximize the profit with no consideration to the user experience. in general Royal Road is great- but they need reduce the number of adds by a lot.
Mostly right
One ad from constant ad in the bottom mode takes control of your sound and cancels music that’s in the background which is really annoying
Be selective when ads you display
I’m only leaving 3 starts instead of 1 with the hope that it will be fixed. I understand you need ads to operate and cover expense and that’s fair but when there is an ad displayed with a circle at size of my nail flashing red and white constantly and it’s on the reading page, then I’m not going to use your app at all. It’s a reading app, displaying animated ads or with flashing lights on the reading page is extremely irritating and very distracting. Either remove ads from reading page and keep them everywhere else on the app or don’t display animated ads on it.
Easy start
I’ve been on here for a year and so far so good. You write and submit. I haven’t been denied publishing yet, so not sure where that bar is. I’m a nobody, not social media popular, or friends with a lot of people who help boost my books. Yet I still found someone to read my stuff. Pretty happy with that.
Bad update
Update forces a large blue icon in the middle of the screen. Who thought this was a good idea? There’s no option to disable it..
Can’t listen to anything in the background
While the app is very accessible, the way it implements its ads leaves much to be desired as every time an ad changes any music in the background will get paused and won’t unpause until you manually do it yourself
Not as good as the website
Where are the font and text size settings? Whilst I understand the need for ads, constant on screen ads are distracting and just ruin the whole experience. Also, the data collection feels very draconian. Why do you need to collect that much stuff?
Love this app!
I currently publish and read on Royal Road. The app is geared towards reading (which I find easy to do and enjoy the layout), but it also lets me quickly check notifications to keep up with my published stories. Highly recommend for anyone looking for new things to read, or wanting to key tabs on what they’ve posted.
Can’t even make an account
Whenever I attempt to make an account I’m told to retry because it counted my attempts as spam so I retry still spam so I try again a few hours later still spam.
Mostly right
I wanted the app to do everything the website can do, and it mostly does. Only thing I can see that’s missing is in the Reputation part of your profile, it doesn’t let you see which of your comments are getting upvoted. Something to look at all the comments you’ve ever left would be nice too, so I can see which of my comments have high ratings. Other than that, pretty well designed and all that as far as I can see.
