What people like
- Great way to practice basic strategy on the go
- Helpful for learning how to count cards
- Free version is good enough for beginners
What they complain about
- Charges you again for features you already bought
- Crashes immediately when you try to open it
- Swipe gestures often register the wrong move
- Dealer seems to win unfairly with big bets
Really helpful tool despite incongruities
The gestures for surrender and hit are different those used in a live casino. In addition, if an inadvertent gesture registers an unintended command, there is no chance to correct, live play permits correction
No better than all the others
Same complaint as ALL the other black jack games. Once you start betting over $100 the dealer starts magically and blatantly win more.
It could use a slider to speed the dealer
I’m just learning the basics right now. I would slow it down to count, speed it up to just play.
Eh…it’s ok.
The app does a good job explaining basic strategy, but I’m almost convinced there’s something wrong/sketchy with the RNG. I played 30 full shoes using basic strategy and zero “wrong moves” according to the app. First 15 shoes were played at $25/hand and I won 54% of the time. The second 15 we’re played at $1000/hand and my win rate using the same strategy dropped to a staggering 28%. I understand bad luck is a thing, but I wouldn’t expect to see such a large discrepancy between wins and losses when playing flawless basic strategy across 15 shoes.
Double Down
The GOOD: free & easy. There’s enough to make you better than average BJ player - if you master basic strategy & card counting. The BAD: dealer gets the first card? The UGLY: cards are swept away without showing/telling you why your count is wrong.
Tantalizing yet Frustrating
Shows how much I need to learn
App crashes
For the last year the app crashes within minutes of opening.
Good App
The app works well for practicing basic strategies however I do wish that you could turn off the option to surrender because most low table games don’t allow it.
Flaky app
App is flaky on how it reads “hand” signals. Splits and double downs randomly read as hits and give you annoyingly scolding messages. Hand signals marketed as a “feature” like it’s similar to real game play, but playing poker on your phone is nothing like the casino. Better apps use buttons to indicate plays. If you want to learn it’s system, it will train you in it. Use the free version, would never buy.
Too fast
Dealer sweeps cards away too fast. No time to total or count. For beginning players or those learning, there should be a way to slow this down until skills are developed. You can slow dealer speed but after cards are dealt they are swept away too fast!
Great App
Great app for people wanting to learn to card counting. Be sure to check out Blackjack Apprentice website and podcast as well!
App getting crashed
Once you try to swipe or hit app getting closed. So you have to start from the beginning. It’s frustrating !
Great app for practicing card counting on the go
Very good app for practicing card counting while commuting and when you got a few minutes to spare. Just wish it would allow options for more than 1 hand to be played similar to the casino.
Glitch during the counting drill
I have to take 3 stars off of it and that’s being generous, you have to pay to gain access to more features in the app and then pay more for the counting drill. Sadly, when the count gets above -9, the app won’t let you type two digits and goes all crazy with the numbers. Please fix ASAP.
I will take your word …
that the shuffle and dealing is random but I’m skeptical. The dealer, too often, has just the right card to beat me. It’s too often to be coincidence. I understand that winning is not the goal. However, if someone is learning the rules but still gets beat often (by the exact card necessary!) then that defeats the purpose. Other than that it is simple to use and effective for learning strategy. I recommend it.
Nothing fancy, works as intended
Will purchase the paid version once I feel I have played a perfect strategy
App is just okay, is abandonware
This app is useful but very unrefined. The card counting drill is helpful when you're doing things correctly, but when you make a mistake, you find out only after the cards dealt have been removed. So there's no way to learn immediately what you did wrong. Wish I knew this app hasn't been updated in 9 years, and that is unlikely to get better.
Dealer kept drawing after 17
Edit: The split aces thing is a rule, you get only one more card on each ace, unless you draw another ace and want to split again. So that was right. But I’m pretty sure the dealer is supposed to stand at 17 even if it has to count an A as an 11 to make it, and even if the house loses on a 17. The app did it again, and I think it glitches when it has more than one A in one hand. It isn’t sophisticated enough to count its aces as one 1 and one 11. Or maybe it’s another rule that I don’t know and the dealer has to count two aces as both 1’s. Old review: I’m new to blackjack, so maybe there’s an exception to the “dealer stands on 17” rule that I’m not familiar with, but I just split 4’s against a dealer’s 5, got something like 20&18, and the bottom card was an ace, dealer drew another ace, and I thought “17, cool, I win.” But the dealer drew two more cards. I was surprised and I didn’t even notice what cards they were, whether that was legal, or what. Again, I’m new. Maybe I just don’t understand the rules. Also, I second what another reviewer said about splitting aces. Shouldn’t we get to play that out further than just one more card? I don’t know that, either. Otherwise, a great app. One last thing. Deal could stand to be faster, and there should be a toggleable feature that explains basic rules each hand for rank beginners like me, instead of always moving on immediately to the next hand. Maybe that’s in the premium version. But even the free app is really good overall.
Good training app BUT won’t give me the upgraded version I already paid for.
This is good for improving your bj skills. The problem: I previously bought the upgraded version and they no longer recognize this. They are trying to get me to pay again for access that I already paid for! Would be 5 stars but the grift makes it 2 stars.
Decent trainer but app has glitches
This app needs some cleanup. For instance, while running the counting drill I got a phone call. When I declined the call the app did not return to the drill but went back to the main start page requiring a restart of the drill. Also, during the counting drill, if you make a mistake a screen pops up showing the proper count. But since it covers the cards you can’t see which cards you miscounted. While playing and counting there is really no easy way to figure the true count. You just need to guess how many decks remain. In addition, you can only see the running count if you make an incorrect play. So sometimes I purposely make a wrong play to see if my running count is correct. All in all an app that’s lacking some polish .
I really like it.
I like learning new things and right away I learned stuff about Blackjack that I never even new existed like basic strategy. The app led me to their video which led me to buying the extras and then I got the paid version of the app because it’s honestly just entertaining and I’m learning alot and I’m learning it alot faster then I thought I would. I know I’ll never be a professional blackjack player and don’t really strive to be but this app made learning so fun I would not only recommend it to people who like Blackjack but also people who like strategy games. 5 stars all day and if I get good enough I’m paying to be a member.
Not good
Not worth the money. They make you pay even after buying pro to access the card counting drills. Also, the “real world motions” sound like a good idea but are terrible in practice.
Great.
Great app to keep you sharp while not at a casino.
Poor program
I bought the paid version of this and it is terrible! It does help you count cards but it would be nice if the dealer in the game play didn't get 20 or 21 every hand!!
No surrender
No surrender
Essential
This app is essential Colin jones let’s play some black jack
Won’t load
This app crashes upon opening on the latest iOS
Buy pro not upgrades
I was concerned because the table felt graphics say the dealer stands on all 17s, but the strategy used & on the chart was for hit on soft 17. You can turn the deal speed down, then up as you get more skill. Sorry to read that in game purchases are not as good as buying pro. Would have bought in game purchases if I hadn’t read reviews here
Black jack trainer
The only real problem with it is sometimes when you swipe it thinks it is a tap but once you learn the charts it’s fairly true about how many times you win against the dealer. It is an ok teacher. Glad I never spent any money though.
Great app
Great training and can’t beat the price
App won’t open
I was excited to find this app but it closes as soon as it opens. I have deleted and reinstalled and still the same.
Only a couple of things
There should be a way to go back and review cards during practice drills if you make a mistake to see where you messed up. Also during play the dealers cards are being swept away before players not giving enough time to keep count.
Handy training aid
For a card counter novice the app gives what is needed. No frills basic drilling: perfect for what I need.
BJA Trainer
Solid app wish the basic strategy was a different feature before getting into the variances
Was a great app
Someone got greedy. This was a great app long ago. Now, you have to pay for the free attributes. Well, this is what you can expect from someone who once said they were not going to create a 21 app, per an email.
Kicks out when hitting on 15
Once this happens you often can not get back to the original game
Great! Potential bug with multiple dealer aces
Helpful app, but there may be bugs with dealer receiving multiple aces in a row. First, it seems to happen too often. I see many dealer hands like 5KAA, 5AA82, and A3KAAA. (Actual examples.) I might be seeing patterns in randomness, as people often do, but it’s worth inspecting the code. Also I think the dealer hit soft 18 with 3AA3, then received a K, which was considered a bust. It cleared fast so it’s hard to know that I caught it correctly. Would be nice if I could see the hand results before they disappear, maybe a pause button.
Not worth the upgrade to pro
I paid to upgrade to pro because it was advertised that there was counting drills. Once you upgrade to pro they make you upgrade again to get the counting practice. Bait and switch.
Overall good App
This app has been helpful to learning the basic of BJ. Only thing I could recommend is adding a feature to show you the percentage of wins to gauge how you are improving over time
Great app. Could you add buttons instead of guestures.
Works well but I often misclick due to guestures. Could you add a button option. It would also work better with apple pencil. 5 star app!!! Thanks for making it.
Slow
It would be better if you could control the speed of the cards.
