Local news keeps our community strong

The Star Advertiser other local news organizations keep us up on what’s going on in government, business and the community. This makes us more cohesive and able to act together as needed with common understandings. Mahalo Star Advertiser and subscribers:)

Advertisements too obtrusive

The ads in this app have become more and more frequent and obtrusive. I cannot read an article without repeated interruptions by ads, to the point where I give up and look for the story at a different news source. I realize that ads are a source of revenue for the newspaper but this is getting ridiculous. If you must, show me ONE ad when I open the app but then let me read without further interruption.

Too much annoying video ads

I appreciate that the business model requires ads, but as you scroll through an article a video ad will pop up half a dozen times in a row after successively closing it. Impossible to actually read the acrile

— Cazanian

Like it a lot!

Any time I can sit in my recliner with a cup of coffee and read the paper on line, makes for a great morning. I have gotten used to reading on line and only read Sunday’s edition in print. I find it easy to read, move about the different sections, and zoom in when necessary due to aging eyesight. My finger tips stay clean and ink free! Reading is more enjoyable this way. I love it!

Politically Biased Reporting

I respect and appreciate balanced & fair reporting on all events, social, financial, and political issues; however, the reporting & editing crew is obviously slanted Blue. As such, management should seriously ponder if it is a barrier to increasing daily subscribers. I don’t want politically driven newspapers editing world events, I can do that on my own.

I popped on here to see if I missed an update. I have repetitive pop-up ads appearing, múltiples before I can get through an article. I’m a subscriber and find it frustrating that it is so difficult to get local news.

It’s 2026 and still a Horrible UI

One of the worst apps for news I have ever used. Even though I pay hundreds of dollars a year for a subscription the app always opens with a full screen ad that can be challenging for folks to dismiss it, in this case a tiny X. It makes it impossible for my elderly mom to use the app. The full screen ads also pop-up during use. Let paid subscribers avoid these full screen ads.

It works

I use the Honolulu Star-Advertiser app primarily for The Big Q survey. It's quick and easy. Most days there is a short ad to view before you can view any content. I'm OK with that because the newspaper has to make money somehow. Sometimes I check out breaking news with the app since that's more current than the printed paper.

Fake 5-Star Reviews

I really wish this App was better because I would love to see this newspaper succeed. But if we are going to be honest with ourselves, this app is really terrible. Most news articles are at least a day old and the only news that is reported are for people living in a left leaning bubble. The only thing I can attribute this having such a high app rating is a ton of fake 5-Star reviews.

Frustrated...

I don't live on the islands but love getting the local news. I like the fact that the app caches the articles but what sucks is that if you leave the app for a sec and return to it, it automatically tries to update. Unless something changed in the last 30sec, there's no need to update it. This is even more irritating if you're in a subway/underground with no cell or wifi service because the app breaks. I would love for this app to stop auto updating if one leaves the app and have an option to pull-down and refresh on demand.

Views

The views have been inconsistent. The obits for one sometimes you have to review them one at a time and other times you can scroll. There are also at times words that break up articles that don’t belong and other times not in sequence. Lastly the USA Today always have misspelling probably due to oct or translation applications.
