Disappointed

The sequencer does not record anything for some strange reason! Tried numerous attempts at recording a sequence but noting seems to work! For a paid app this is very poor!

Keyboard size

Hey Thank you for fixing the scaling issue on iPad Pro 11”. There are empty spaces on either side now but they are fine. Can you increase the size of keys for Large setting as the keys are still too narrow for human fingers? Please see GarageBand keyboard sizes which are most ideal. Also, the keyboard should be locked from scrolling by default at launch. Keyboards are locked in all other apps by default and it is the expected behavior. Cheers!

Clicks and buzzes

I love this synth but unfortunately it is unusable due to the clicks and buzzes. I have tested on my iPhone 15 and my iPad Pro. No effects one oscillator, minimum polyphony and nothing else playing. Too many clicks. Can’t even manage one loop on loopy pro without glitches. Such a shame as it could be one of the most versatile synths on iOS.

Has plenty of great sounds, works well with midi keyboard. It has only connected to my DAW successfully once. I have many plugins that connect to my DAW without a problem so I know it’s not the DAW.

Enough

This is in some ways a really good, good-sounding synthesizer. Why, then, the crappy “rating” (whatever those don’t mean)? I’ve reached the point of disgust with music apps that change my preset names and change my actual settings. The name change here is the imposition of capitalization where the developer wants to see it. The setting changes happen while I configure patches, fighting the interface to get where I want to go. The GUI here, as in many synthesizers, pushes the user toward settings the developer prefers - or, more correctly, away from setting the developer would prefer we did not use. In many cases, such fractional note or frequency or MIDI or, more typically (and uselessly), such frowned-upon percentage values are available through the GUI, though they are a battle to find. In this app, as in most music apps, we cannot type in the value we want to use. No, we fiddle with the GUI. This is fine for fooling around, but if you know what you are looking for, the battle is not amusing. What is worse is that after battling the interface to achieve a setting, the app very often promptly loses that setting, replacing it either immediately or after a restart with values the developer, Apple, or someone else prefers. For the user paying for the device and the software, what becomes plain is that what the user wants to do with an app is only acceptable so long as that usage falls within some unspoken set of limits on what characters can appear in what combinations in a given app. I have heard the theory that floating-point processing is to blame for supposedly minor settings changes, because of rounding. Well, no. Floating-point processing is historically tied to surveillance and spying, but the changes this processing produces tend to be consistent and, indeed, minor. The changes in settings (and sometimes text) we see in App Store software like - for many increasingly annoying years - Sunrizer are not minor and they are not inaudible. And the changes vary from developer to developer, with a few commonalities more more related to certain ranges of ANSI/Unicode values than to number-rounding errors. It may be the settings changes devolve to Apple and nation-state surveillance practices. Or they could be one of the sad DRM things Apple and other tech companies do to appease the copyright lobby and to make themselves feel better about software cracking. Whatever - it makes little difference to me right now where all the blame belongs. But then the infuriating jumpiness of the GUI displays, in which getting a desired value can be a nasty business, still falls squarely on Beep Street, as do the crashes I get if I battle with a preset for too long. This is on a current-OS, not-old pad using OLD software. The funny thing is, I like this developer, and left a rating review in response to the current update. Then I went to edit some patches. I struggled, as usual, then crashed - despite nothing else being on at all and frequent saving - again as usual. I want to like this app. Alas, in practice I do not - and the reasons are in the front of my mind once again.

Was A beauty...now LOCKS GarageBand into endless loop.

October 2022: Made the mistake of starting to use this again - the various smaller issues previously mentioned - for which I left my rating at 5 stars, mark you - now pale into insignificance. I dared to put three instances of Sunrizer into a song, hadn’t used it in ages. Something seized up when I exited (ie ‘saved’) inside GB song editor, then no matter a restart, flicking GB completely off, etc, the only way I could get GarageBand back, was by going into Files, and deleting the offending GB file. Or, as I found, deleting the three entries of Sunrizer Audio Unit inside the song. A real shame - love this synth but now it’s literally making me concerned what might happen. Also, I lost the MIDI pattern unless I now go into ‘Files’ app and copy the offending song, then go in and move the MIDI to another (non-problematic) Audio Unit synth, and that would save it. The cycle it locked me into in GB was endless, until I deleted all instances of Sunrizer Audio Unit, is the takeaway. One star for locking GarageBand into an endless loop. If they fix this, I will happily re-review. OLDER… August 8th 2021…contact not found on server if i try that, so here’s hoping this dev sees this…using with garageband on ipad pro 2, two instances gives massive overloud static sound. Using one instance gives a warning in gb ‘audiounit unloaded - reload or disable?’. Using latest ios 14.7, and latest ipadOS garageband version. It’s great synth, but I cannot use it as things stand! help! Take care all. Note I won’t reduce my five stars as hopefully it’s fixable, sunrizer, I miss you. EDIT - stranger symptoms happened when I persisted and got 5 instances of sunrizer - when the AudioUnit ‘reload’disable’ error came up this time I disabled it, and even knocked GB off totally and rebooted the ipad…but still my midi tracks in sunrizer went silent, at the bar and measure where the error message came up…I literally had to delete bits of midi then undo my deleting of the little sections of midi concerned, to ‘repair’ them! This still might not be sunrizer as such…probably it’s just how GB ‘breaks’ when you load it up to the edge, because the GB memory management on ipad, well, it doesn’t. I had a drummer track and 4 other synth tracks in this song file. This last issue probably is simply ‘the way GB breaks on this occasion’! SEP 22nd 2019... So, AUV3 runs fine now - latest update yesterday - and I have one song I am trying Sunrizer, with 5 instances in GarageBand song (which with anything except built-in keyboards of GB you can’t do usually). It works perfectly well, using the on-screen keyboard, and functions fine but has a small thing that technically does NOT affect making music, when using a USB-Lightning connectored (is that a word?!) keyboard (iRig keys 37 on iPad Pro V2)... In a sentence: Records fine - even at five instances maybe more - but when using external keyboard and running via AUV3, there’s artefacts (clicks and pops) appear when you press the PLAY button etc at the top of the GarageBand screen. THIS DOES NOT APPEAR MUSICALLY, it is ONLY a thing that happens in response to ‘live’ picking on the on-screen play/stop/rewind buttons atop the screen in ‘song’ view in GB. So, I doubt there’s any issue there, that actually affects the stage of say, recording/outputting a ‘master’ track from your multi-track song, because you are not ‘inside’ the song view, to press these on-screen buttons. It’s all done outside, at the GB ‘front’ screen. For that reason, and the fact they’ve addressed the problem to the important MUSICAL extent, I deffo need to leave the five stars. I can’t call them down for an artefact that is fleeting, and for the record, it was when using the ‘big synth strings’ out of the Sunrizer 2 bank...it’s the one that sounds like Bladerunner has, when the air-cars are zooming around! So, it’s got only a slight non-problematic issue, and the great advantage of seemingly being able to have several (like 5 or more?!) tracks or instances, running at a time in a song. Now, that’s a MASSIVE advantage. Out weighs the tiny glitchy bit that afflicts the sound, only when live picking on the play button etc, inside song view of GB. I’ll update if there’s more, I caouldn’t in all fairness knock the programmers for that. Overall, a fine musical instrument, and multiple instances simultaneously, anyone reading this will know how much weight we should give that - a lot. OLDER stuff follows, will be obsolete, largely since this Sep 2019 update... OLDER REVIEWS PRE-SEPTEMBER 2019 This is a great synth, only issue I have is VERY recently thrown up, it is a technical issue to do with the new AUv3 method of connecting through from GarageBand into plug-ins. Any synth could suffer it. I will try and contact the sunrizer people elsewhere, it’s literally a one-off thing arising from the new tech and my keyboard. The older IAA method is perfectly fine, and I assume Audiobus, though I have not used that. OLDER REVIEW still stands, it is a great little synth still 5 stars... Recognisable as a synth, plays like a synth. The only issue seems the business of interactions between apps, which is little to do with this app of itself. Very hard to make standards that developers stick to, or cooperate about perhaps. But Sunrizer as an analogue synth does the arpeggiator and makes the great sonic assault as it ought to be - reminds me I must get it BT’d or wired into my busker amp and blow the roof off sometime soon!

Great Synth

Final Update: The company is great, they fixed the issue with Cubasis after the review so it works seamlessly. It sounds great and they get the 5 star review from me. It has a very clean sound to it so you can make some high quality music with this, worth the purchase Previous UPDATE: Works with inter-app audio on cubasis and that's how you'll have to use it. It doesn't work as an AUv3 plugin, read the previous review Original: It's 2025. It crackles with almost every sound I use. At about a week of this, I Google just to find out this is a problem exclusively with cubasis that has been discussed since at least 2021.

— Mello Digital

★☆☆☆☆ United States · v4.03 · 24 Dec 2019

Rather disappointed. Buggy.

I can’t really hear the raved “warmth” of this synth, at least not in the presets that come with it, they all sound pretty harsh and digital to my ear. Since it’s an old app, maybe it was simply surpassed by other apps? Some presets sounds have slight click/pop at the beginning of the sound when playing polyphony (for example “Sensoramic” preset) and tweaking attack in the amp and filter envelopes does not cure it. A bug where initializing the synth (by choosing “Init” from Synth Tools menu) incorrectly displays the mode when it was loaded after a preset which was in ARP mode. It states that the preset is in POLY mode but it plays an ARP, you need to cycle through the modes to correct it. Completely unreliable and frustrating “chord” function. It takes multiple attempts to store the chord, sometimes the previously stored chord is not updated. Frustrating that the chord gets assigned to one of the keys used when creating it, but it’s kinda random which one. For example, if you press keys C, E and G it will (when you’re lucky!) assign this C Major chord at the C pitch to either C, E or G key! ***Update*** the Chord function works but chords need to be programmed in a way that is NOT described in the manual, otherwise it will not work: follow the steps in the user manual for the chords creation BUT then when you are holding the “Chord” button while depressing keyboard keys to be used in the chord you want to store, FIRST release the “Chord” button THEN the keyboard keys. If you release the keyboard keys before releasing the “Chord” key, the chord will not be stored properly. This is not described in the manual (or maybe developer is not aware of this quirk). No clear indication of LFO assignments. Many synthesizers such as Factory, Helm, etc, provide a visual representation of which parameter is controlled by LFO. In Sunrizer not only is there no such indication but on top of it the names of the parameters are not consistent across the synth. For example, the Filter has a parameter and its knob labeled “Cutoff” but that parameter is named “FLT 1 Freq” in the LFO section, which makes it confusing. More sloppy labeling : “>” is a math symbol, should not be used as anything else, especially in a context of talking about values, frequencies, etc. For example, in the Synth Tools menu one of the tools is labeled as “LFO 1 freq > LFO 2 freq” which is confusing as it should mean “LFO 1 freq is greater than LF0 2 freq”, meanwhile what it means in this app is that LFO 1 freq is supposed to be equal to LFO 2 freq. Well, the sign for this has been “=“ since very long time ago! More confusion and inconsistent labeling, this time it’s even described in the manual: “ When SuperSaw is selected, - Width/Sub knob controls the depth of detune, - Mix/PWM knob controls the volume level of detuned sound.” Except there is no knob labeled “width/sub”. If the knobs control those parameters with this oscillator type, why isn’t it clearly indicated in the knobs’ labels? It should be possible to type in exact values of parameters, sometimes it is critical to dial in exact number, which is not possible by turning the knobs, they are not precise enough. No arrows outside on the panel for quick presets browsing, have to dive into the menu. The pull down menu does not disappear automatically when you touch parameters section, lots of unnecessary touches just to close the menu. The arp controls look promising. Cool BMP input method, it’s very quick to adjust, I’m surprised it’s not used by other apps.

Some of the best patch sounds in the App Store

This app has some of the thickest and lushest sounds you’ll get in the App Store. As an owner of an actual JP-8000, this synth is reminiscent of those sound patches. It’s easy to start buying too much stuff but if you’re quality over quantity, this synth should still make your cut.

There is no explanation on how to clear MIDI assignments. Furthermore, the user guide apparently refers to an older version that does not have a PREFS button anywhere, but this button is mentioned in the user guide. It has some nice features, but it is really not worth the $9.99 it costs.

Almost perfect

This is the best-sounding iOS synth, period. I’ve tried others, and some of them sound great, but they disappoint in crucial areas. The sheer, unfathomable greatness of sound and ease of programmability punch so much higher than the “trance genre” stigma of this versatile poly synth. The amp ADSR is rock solid, unlike many other iOS synths (free and paid alike). Take your favorite iOS softsynth, make a saw-based slow string patch with a slow attack and run it through its paces and you’ll see what I mean. For the ugly: in GarageBand, when you attempt to add a second Sunrizer AUv3 track, the first one kerplodes. The note data stays in tact, and GarageBand tries to play it, but the track is horridly glitchy and broken-sounding. And the devs don’t answer emails of paying customers. Know this before you pull the trigger.

Was great; please fix tuning!

I have nothing to add to the rave reviews on Sunrizer: its still sets the standard for iOS synths after more than a decade, it still is rock-solid in performance and in sound, and I still use it whenever I can. Which isn’t as often as I’d like, because the custom tuning has been broken since my last iOS 9 device bit the dust. On iOS 12 and 13, selecting anything other than standard (i.g., 12-tone equal temperament) tuning transposes the entire synth range up by two octaves, and the MIDI transpose function does not work to bring it back down. Thus, no bass for you! That wouldn’t be a complete loss if it weren’t also now impossible to set the root note for non-equal temperament tuning systems. Choosing a root note just assigns C to the corresponding key on the keyboard. So, if I set Eb as my root note for a justly-intoned scale, then touch the Eb key, I hear a note that sounds like C from 12-TET 440. Two octaves higher than it should be. I emailed the dev about this some time ago. I know life is weird for us all as the pandemic drags on, but Beepstreet updates have appeared without this issue being addressed. And yeah, I’m a niche market in a niche market, but I miss Sunrizer’s reliability and incredibly awesome sounds in my music. I can sample it, I suppose, but it’s just not the same. I’m still looking for the synth to replace it for iOS work. SynthMaster One is the best sounding so far, but its interface trips over its own cleverness. Why so few synths on this platform bother with custom tuning is another question entirely, but I sure do wish that Sunrizer could return to its place at the head of my signal chain.

HERES A POINTER...IGNORE 1 & 5* reviews to get a more consistent picture. Would you give a Ford Focus 5*? Then how would you rate a Ferrari? 5* as well? Mad...the lot of you. Esp firejan5

Great but.....

Love this synth on my ipad BUT, despite it being being seen within the app, my NI Komplete A49 will not work. Works with Garage band and other synths so why not this one?

Nice synth no doubt, but please update it to Audio Units

Needs to be AU compatible, as all the other's companies synths as well, don't understand what they are waiting for, Arturia only iSEM with AU, Viking synth also has it, but others waiting for something or am I doing something wrong, cause can't find AU devices, except above mentioned. Sunrizer is good synthesiser, well done but please don't stop, make it even more cooler with some unexpected feature maybe. All synths seem to be so similar, OSCa, Filters, keyboard, why developers try to implanted analog gear, with similar options, I don't know, they should make use of touch screens and virtual environment, similar to TC-11 synth developers done, but more so. As everybody, they made synth and seems that or, just sitting on their bars and getting paid. Sorry, just wanted to share, thou it might be silly of me,

Was ist da los?!?

Buggy on garage band

Great adaptation of a classic synth but super buggy on garage band. Has trouble scrolling through banks (kind of freezes up) some sounds don’t play back accurately after recording in midi.

One of the best synth apps ever

I’ve had this app since the day it was released. It is still my favorite synth app on iPad and iPhone. It’s so wonderful and intuitive that every time I use it it makes me smile. I’ve used it in many live gigs and just playing around. I have at least 115 or so audio iOS apps. They are all paid apps and I have also beta tested many apps since 2011. This app has never let me down. Using a midi controller or just the screen, it always comes through and has never crashed on me. Also, you can tweak everything so much and there are so many wonderful audio packs for this. This app will always be in my top five apps and whenever I meet someone who is getting into iOS audio production this is on my top 10 list of must have apps. It has been around for a very long time and they still update it, which is amazing. Beep Street is a fantastic company and everything they release is tops. Plus, they don’t screw around with overpriced subscriptions. Even if they had a subscription app, I’m sure it would be insanely affordable. This is definitely one of the top synthesizer apps for iOS and they are not greedy and everything they put out is priced right and completely worth every penny.

Inter app audio?

I thought this app was supposed to have inter-app audio? How am I supposed to open this in my recording apps it's not showing up? I've tried this with beatmaker2 Audioshare and GarageBand with no luck. Besides that it's a great sounding synth audiobus works

Where's the inter-app audio?

I love the lay-out, the sound quality and functionality, but my main draw to buying this app was the inter-app connectivity that is advertised in the description. I feel a bit jipped as this seems to be false advertisement. Please fix and I will give this app 5 stars :) UPDATE; where's the metronome? The more i try to use this piece of kit, the more problems i encounter and there hasn't been an update since i bought this thing almost a year ago. Im starting to think this was just a GIANT cash grab for the company. Just lost yet another star. Please fix, what could be an amazing 5 star synth.

Still the Best

I used to play a JP- 8000, and this is a very good emulation of it. Warm, rich ‘90s sounds… for pads on iOS, there’s still nothing else like it. I didn’t use it as much as I would’ve liked to in the past because it got glitchy too often in IAA, but in AU3 it is very solid and reliable. if you only have five synths, this should be one.

Ugly Duck

My favourite iPad virtual analogue synth - intuitively easy to use, everything tweakable on one big panel, gorgeous presets, lots of options in a remarkably compact package ... And it _was_ beautiful too, in two-tone brushed steel midnight blue, with a stunning illusion of 3D ... but this upgrade (for want of a better term) is a GIANT step backwards to a flat, ugly, and visually dissonant interface that spoils the whole user experience. YUK.

Good but crashy

Sounds awesome, but the app crashes a lot. Especially when using Osc sync. Even some of the presets unmodified will crash the app... Hope this gets fixed. Great app tho!!!

Please update

I like Sunrizer a lot but since Cubasis became 2.0 I have had trouble loading it and can only use standalone. An AU port would be great. I would even pay for this. Midi control of the morph wheel would be a bonus along with new patches. Please Beepstreet. Btw love Zeeon!
