What people like
- Great classic strategy game experience
- Developer keeps updating the old game
- Highly addictive and engaging gameplay
What they complain about
- Moving units individually every turn is tedious
- AI gangs up on you unfairly
- You must buy extra maps separately
An excellent, straightforward 4x game
An easy to use implementation of a straightforward 4x game (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate), similar to the old Empire game. The maps are fixed, not generated, but there are many of them (dozens), with the affordable map packs adding dozens more. The number of opponents are fixed at 5, regardless of map size. One of the add-ons lets you adjust the speed and production costs of units. You can double tap the map to give a non-air unit a multi-turn path, but otherwise you move every unit individually every turn. This can make the late game on larger maps a little tedious, but that’s because I usually like playing past the first couple times the computer offers to surrender. I’ve been playing for decades, and still enjoy it.
They ruined the game
This was a great game to play. Now they have it where you do not select the map that you want to play. All in all bad decision on the change.
Great. But crashed.
Super game. Played many games. But I click on a screen of map of the day and the game crashed and cannot restart. Help
WHY IS EVERYTHING PAY TO WIN????
If this game is still being worked on please make everything free except the custom maps, If not then ill uninstall this game FOREVER. Great game btw
Gang up on the human
In my very first game, I encountered all of the other AI opponents quickly in the game and I was thinking, "Wow, this must be a really small map!" But it wasn't the map. Even though fog of war was on, all of the AI opponents threw their forces directly at me - even empires from all the way across the map! At first I thought I was just imagining things but the quick playback at the end of the game clearly showed all of the AI opponents making a beeline for me. It seems unfair to me that I can't see them but they can see me and they all gang up on me. It also seems like a lazy way of increasing the challenge of the game without having to program a better AI. I mean, it seems like the higher difficulty levels merely means the AI opponents cheat more. How is that fun?
Great Game
Another person who started playing Empire years ago and this is every bit as engaging and better in some ways. I strongly recommend purchasing the “Custom Maps” pack. It lets you set size and density of maps, number of computer players, alter production and movement specs of pieces etc. it is also reassuring that the developer continues to update and improve this 14 year old game. Try his Firefight for the graphics, you will be impressed, but MOB is still my go to.
LOST ALL MY PROGRESS WITH UPDATE!!!!
Seriously!!!! I was redoing all my maps on the next difficulty up. I was almost done and the new update erased all my progress and the current map I was playing!! And it’s not restoring all my maps!!!!
Missing useful features
Wish it can let me save maps (eg maps I lost in) that I can replay again later. Also wish I can watch how I won/lost at the end of a game ...
A few flaws
As a great fan of the original “Empire”, it took a little bit to get used to some of the differences most notably a fighter’s turn ends even if the attacked unit is destroyed. The lack of a production list and the a inability to give units “marching orders” also creates a lot of mental overhead. The main issue I have is that periodically the AI goes into “crush the human” mode. Opponents ignore each other and focus on you exclusively. their attacks destroy you in a single engagement while yours do minimal damage. Could be a great game, but instead it’s a swing and a miss.
Promising, but missing some Freatures
Generally I really like this game, as it remembers me of the good old EMPIRES for AMIGA. What I am currently missing: a list of all units and the possibility, to see how damaged hostile units are. A list of all cities would be very helpful as well!
Great game
I just say the new update and love it, I hope in the future we can see all the items you make vs your competitors and how many of each item you killed! Thank you for such a great game
Annoying Music
Annoying music that you can’t switch off.
A good old game but it has a bug recently
I played this game for many years when it only had pc version. I am still playing it now but in iPad. However recently I found a bug which some cities are not able to produce army ( tanks) in custom map. Hope this defect is resolved.
USED to be a great game
This most recent update has made the game almost unplayable. Please fix it!
From Ross and Hank
Hello, I am disappointed that you can’t choose to have more than one human player in a game. My son Hank and I would like to play a game where we each control our own armies, etc. And the computer play the remaining armies. I purchased for $10 your special generated game which showed a tile for selecting up to 6 players only to find out that was only for the number of computer generated players. I feel like I got ripped off and Hank is bummed. It sure would be cool and I think good for your sales to introduce a multi-human player option. Thanks for your consideration. Ross And Hank
Endless playability
Absolutely love this game and this developer. Started with Slay wayyyyyy back in the year 2000 on an HP jornada pocket PC. Switched to MoAB, and play it again and again to this day. Great update with the Best Piece summary! Would love to see a similar “stats summary” page that shows how many total units lost, total units created, total enemy units destroyed, cities captured, cities lost, cities nuked, etc. at end of game.
Over zealous AIs
The first two maps were fun, the third map was on very easy, I was placed on the upper left corner of the map and all the AIs attacked me instead of each other. The second go round on the same map, I started on an island middle left with only one factory, and all the AIs ganged up on me again. Is this part of the programing that the human player is the prime target for the AIs? Maybe the game designer should play Deluxe Empire (the game this one is very similar to) to understand how to make a game that is fun to play!
Great revival of a classic
Great version of the classic Strategic Conquest. Would have rated five stars except one increasingly frustrating issue. With large maps and sparse cities it is very frustrating trying to use bombers. You approach a city and one or two spaces before you detonate, it runs out of fuel and turns around with an almost guarantee to be shot down. A counter or vessel turning a different color with 3-5 spaces left to go would help dramatically.
Fun game, recently started to crash
This has been a fun strategy game to play during down times. Unfortunately it seems like it’s not supported in the new iOS version updates.
v3.5 broken?
Love the new features, in theory. But game unplayable at present. Enemy units seem to skip moves. Enemy cities are ungarrisoned. Can't even get the upsell to work: can see the screen to purchase custom maps option, but unable to buy it. Any, glad the game is still being maintained/updated: great fun!
Nostalgia favorite
As someone who spent many hours playing Strategic Conquest, this is a nice nostalgic play. The map of the day feature is a nice add. It would very nice if there were a couple more feature adds. 1. Remember the destination of a piece across multiple turns. When trying to cross a big map, it is annoying to every turn have to move a piece. 2. Be able to setup a destination for a city production so that every piece spawned in that city automatically moves to the destination location. This would be great for armies on big islands or fighters crossing a large game board.
Perdu tous les map que j'avais acheter dans ce jeu
Le jeu est bien mais repayer pour les maps me degoute. D'ou la note.
I can’t buy large maps
It is just loading forever, i cannot purchase large maps
Crippled
The games maps aren’t randomly generated like the blurb says, and they’re not customisable, they come in sets that you have to buy, which really limits the game. You also can’t choose the number of opponents you’re up against.
New update
Great game, similar to old Mac game, but new update won’t let me purchase the randomly generated maps, and £8.99 for this style of map seems excessive.
Perfect game
Endlessly engaging, with just the right amount of complexity. One of my all-time favorites.
This version crashes on iPhone 6+ 8.1.2
Keep to the old version if you still have it. Otherwise a great port of Strategic Conquest on the Mac.
Strategic Conquest
Like many players of a certain age, I come looking for something that recaptured the vintage Strategic Conquest, and I wasn’t disappointed. If the makers of this game are looking for ideas on how to make it even better, here’s two: 1) the old Strategic Conquest allowed you to “program” where the output of a city would move - in other words, all the planes or ships made by a given city would automatically head for the front when they were built. This saved a lot of tedium on large maps in the later stages. 2) one of the most satisfying features of the original Civ I was the replay at the end - the small world map with the colored areas showing all the civs would play an accelerated recap of how each power had risen and fallen throughout the game. This would make winning even more fun as you watched how you’d grown from a minuscule power to a world-dominating force.
Mother of all battles
Great game but I can not win even on easy mode. I used to do it easily on the PC version of Empires. But not on this version. Maybe a strategy guide is in order. I would give it 5 Stars if I could set the number of opponents and trust that the AI is not cheating.
Used to be 5 stars now just 3...
This game is, er was about an 80% clone of the old Empire, War Game of the Century. I bought all of the maps ages ago, and definitely recommend that you do to in order to really enjoy the game. However this new revision, I AM NOT a big fan of. Changing the game control locations was a bit confusing but I can adapt. Changing the way the game plays, specifically the fighters, absolutely NERFS out your fighters. No longer can fighters fly over mountains the way they ALWAYS did, even going back to the original release of Empire, and continuing through Empire 2 and the previous releases of Mother of All Battles, going back to when I first downloaded it almost 10 years ago. Yes, folks I have enjoyed this game for about a decade now, but this latest snafu really messes with the game mechanics. I may end up uninstalling it... how sad that a great game has to die like this... :(
Pure Nostalgia
I loved this game when it was called Strategic Conquest. Played it incessantly back in the day. So glad I found this game for Mac iOS.
Multi-player
Would pay for this app if it were multi-player like the old strat con on the Mac.
A bit hard
The Ai is hard and I need a lot of days to make units and it needs a tutorial and the little worlds are not little there big to a noob eyes but it’s good but it’s better if it’s easyer for the noobs and the people who don’t know how to play and #Kael the king
Great Game....but...
Please provide a toggle for turning off the atomic bomb option. It takes all the fun out of building up & organizing an invasion only to have it wiped out.
Blast from the past
I’m an old time Empire player starting around 1976 on a Vax at RIT. Later I enjoyed the DOS versions. Now I’m enjoying it on my phone. This game has staying power and satisfies all my strategy game cravings.
Horrible
Very bad game, it has no good actually fun parts considering you can't even figure out how to play!!!
Bring back old school features
I LOVE playing this game, and will continue to be addicted to it, but I agree that there are a few features from Strategic conquest, that would be great for this. Definitely bring back the city production list, as that only seems realistic that any warring power would want to take inventory and scheduling on what they’re producing. Also the old game used to have a feature where, before you sent a plane flying or ship on a certain course, you could drag the cursor to a place in the map to see how many sections you’d be traveling, or you could also set a ship sailing all the way across the world if you dragged that far. Also, as morbid as it sounds, I think you should bring back the future of being able to attack your own vehicles, as sometimes you need to clear something out of the way to attack an opponent .
STOP - READ BEFORE YOU UPGRADE!!!
I really Love this game and the addition of the little world map is fine but they also made the rest of the map quite a bit smaller. I think if you are on an iPad this will be fine but if you are on a phone (and I have a large plus phone) it’s too small. And unfortunately you can not turn it off as far as I can tell. So if you like the game the way it is and don’t have eagle eyes I’d skip this upgrade. Now... how to undo it and go back a version... ugh...
Slight improvement to AI?
Love this game. Play it often. But after the last update I'm finding that there are entire games where no AI player builds battleships. That means I can basically casually romp them. I'm not saying it happens every game but it happens about half the time. Please try to make another "slight improvement" to the AI.
Needed for MacOS
I'm hoping the developer recompiles this app for the MacOS and adds support for widescreen.
Finger weg!!!
Additional variety
The game has many maps, and the addition of the option to end the game when conquering a certain portion of the map is also convenient. It might be an interesting idea to add maps which are almost all land, to enphasize ground type warfare. Perhaps one of those maps could also have a single small river with a few bases along it's route to emphasize geound warfare, but offer a strategic opportunity to supplement an assault with ships and resources. Oh, maybe another option where there's a chance the difficulty could get even harder (or their resources build twice as fast), and different colored teams merge together against the main player as they conquer more of the map. Maybe that could be a randomly generated thing. Still, a fun, addicting game.
UI is awful
Three stars for bringing back the classic ‘Empire’ style game to iOS; there doesn’t seem to be any other app that replicates the old style of this type of game. That said, the bad UI UX makes the game unplayable for me. Tanks also can cross water for some reason... Nice try though...
Strategic Conquest
If you like 4x games, this is for you. It's exceptional. I finally deleted it from my devices yesterday because I had spent hundreds of hours playing it over the past few months. It had taken over my life. But that's my addictive personality and it's not your problem. :) Frankly, I had the same problem with the original Strategic Conquest when I was a 23 y/o. I did all-nighters playing the game in 1989 and suffered the next day at work. My only quibble is that there's no auto-forwarding of units, so it can be a little tedius moving every piece near the end of the game when you have a lot of them. Doesn't matter. The game is immersive and takes over your life. You dream about it and think about it when other people are speaking. Food becomes optional. 33 years later, and it still caused me to play all night and suffer at work the next day.
Empire lives!
A decent rendition of the old text empire and related games. Pretty good, but I have a few wishes: * zoom setting so I can have slightly larger squares, at the cost of seeing less of the world. * the ability to set destinations rather than moving pieces one square at a time. * really REALLY need auto-paths for new construction, for new arrivals, and for repeating orders. Older versions let you set up these paths to dramatically reduce the amount of micro-management required. * empire-wide management screens would help a lot -- ie spreadsheet lists of cities and units. * have an option to turn off the surrender messages... if I want to pummel the enemy into dust, I don't want to listen to his annoying attempts to surrender!
Great idea and stuff but...
Look, let me get this straight, the whole concept of this game is amazing. I love the fact that there's a whole range of units to build, that you have to escort your transports with destroyers and battleships, that aircraft need fuel and all of that. However, the controls are so painstakingly hard to use. I mean I don't know what's already moved, the movement isn't smooth, the fuel left isn't shown, the enemies just appear, like I don't see them coming into view like many other similar games give. Perhaps a few things to fix?
