- Won't measure sound while playing music
It’s a fun little app
I like the old-school chart recorder thingy and the ability to use different weighting for the sound. Great for audio nerds
Recorder does not work
While the free app works, do not waste your money. The strip chart recorder does not work
Needs a max reading metric
It’s not useful to me without recording the max volume. It only shows instantaneous volume.
The
Sc
App crashes not fixed
Purchased version of the App still crashes when trying to save an image with the decibel meter. Issue not resolved on iPhone 11
Outstanding decibel meter…
Fast - easy interface - Useful when cleaning house, reading, hiking to make sure the ‘noise’ is good noise.
Fails at high end
At a NASCAR race at Dover it registered 90 when the green flag dropped. We were at the end of the straightaway just before turn 1. The cars came roaring; we were less than 25 meters from the track and the decibel level supposedly only increased to 95. If you’ve ever been that close to a start or restart you know the decibel level is well over a hundred. With head phones off and screaming in your neighbor’s face you cannot hear a word they are screaming!
Simple to use
Exactly what it should be but I wonder why it asks for Camera access? Big thanks to developer for keeping this going.
It used to work, but recently stopped
I've had this app for a few years and barely used it. I tried several times recently to use it, but to no avail. I'm deleting it and going with a different one. Not sure what the problem is (or was).
Not accurate but
it’s definitely detecting small bits of sound but the microphones in iPhones aren’t really built for this so it’s not accurate - for example the average Decibels in a residential street is 40dB and it’s saying it’s 55-60 in my bedroom in the country in dead silence . But I guess it can still be used for context
Works great
Simple. The strips are cool.
App blows
This app doesn't work I got this for my class project and I haven't done anything to my phone I haven't dropped it. This app doesn't work at all
Good enough I guess
Every place you check, the approximate dB SPL of various sounds is a bit different. For example, other reviewers claim a quiet room is ~40dB, but various websites online say it’s 30 or even 20dB. My room at night measures 36dB. Similarly, conversation at 1m away is around 40-60dB, so I stood 1m away and spoke quietly, quieter than I would in a normal conversation in a quiet room (and I’m not a loud speaker). The app measured ~70dB. I guess I should just automatically reduce any measurement by ~5-10dB. Good enough if absolute accuracy isn’t a must, I guess. 4 stars, since I don’t have a good decibel meter to compare against.
Annoying
I wanted to know how loud my speakers actually were when i played my music but all of these apps turn of the music as its playing from my phone. So i open the app and it mutes the sound i am trying to measure. I just want a app that measures how loud the sound is around me. I wanted to measure the volume Of my music so it decides to turn the music off! Very very annoying there should Be a option to leave the sound from the phone already on.
Good and simple.
Nuff said.
This is an excellent app, & it works in unpaid mode.
I am a software NOT a hardware engineer, so I have no idea if it is even possible to use the microphone of an iphone to measure dBs with any useful precision. This application gives results consistent wih well rated iOS and Android apps - I have compared it to about 8 others.
Could be great
But the meter is too slow to respond to the sound level and does not show peak level,
Elegant and Simple
I’ve used this app for years, and have found it quite useful, without distracting bells and whistles. I’ve also corresponded with the developer, and found that the weighting (which is not evident) is broadband. Some of the features of a lab meter would be nice to have, like switchable A- or C-weighting, or averaging vs instantaneous readings. But the app is quick and easy as it is, and ads do not intrude.
Update please!!!
It comes up 90db when it's really supposed to be around 60db on the iPhone 5 because it has another speaker so plz fix it
Need update
Works good. But need an update witg more feature! And the icon should be ratina icon. Still on my IPhone4 and ios 6.1.3 this icon does not look very clear
They finally got it Calibrated.
I’ve been using Decibels for years having found the chart recorder extremely useful, however it always read dB a little higher than it really was. The last update corrected that and it now has correct readings. They also added different weighting settings A,C andZ. The basic meter is great and I recommend getting the options as it makes the best meter using chart recorders.
Stopped Working
Loved this simple app in iOS 5. Doesn't seem to do a thing in iOS 7.
Seems pretty accurate
I will have my sound engineer look at it. 73#
It seems inaccurate
It's free but I'm pretty sure it's inaccurate and after two months it stopped workin so I reinstalled it.
Ok
It is ok but compared to others it is a little of not much though only 10-20db so just have to remember of course it might be my mic on my iPod
I tried multiple...
I tried multiple (free) versions and I do like this one the best! Simple. Straight to the point.
Don't work with ISO7
Loved this app, please fix!
Very Useful but One Request
This is great for documenting sound levels but would soar with the addition of a Date and Time and GPS stamp. For noise complaints that would be a crucial addition and put this one above the crowd.
Was good to start with
Thought it was a great little app but on the 3rd time of opening it the needle just sits at 10decibels. It's stuck and won't do anything
It has potential
This app is not really for me. It's not as accurate as I would hope. It detected 70db in my bedroom. With no noise what so ever. But it's like whatever I measure. It has 50db added to it
U can use your CAMERA
Simple analog meter but you can take a picture of the sound your measuring
Only works when it wants to.
As of now, this app is useless.
Great! But....
It would be nice if it allowed me to go into a landscape view when I tilt my phone over. Just a a personal preference. And nothing a quick up date can't fix! Thanks!
Horrible
At first it was working fine, but NOW, it says that a totally silent room is 50 decibels and it won't go above 100 (even in a concert!), and it's not accurate anywhere in between. I have an iPod touch 4.1 so if you have that then I would avoid this app because it will just... not work.
good at above 70dB noise levels
this app ia good at measuring loud sound levels. anything below 70db and it shows too high. i recommend something else if you need accurate readings.
nice update
I’ve been using the old version from time to time to check the loudness of my environment taking screenshots to remember them. Now I can finally add the decibels to an image :) The strip chart recorder is a great addition … very nice interface. The app overall is neatly designed and programmed with an eye for details. Thanks a lot. Nice work!
Boo
Didn't work... At all... Just stayed at 60 the whole time...
Nice
Nice
Questionable Accuracy (v1.0)
Nice analog display, but I wonder how accurate it is. It NEVER drops below 55 db even in a totally quiet bedroom in the middle of the night.
Free decibel
Nice little free app, does what it says on the tin, within technical limits. Useful example to have in the developers online resources.
Works great on iPhone 5
Compared it to a high end db meter and it was with in a 3 db range of my phone. It seems to be closer to a db-c metering style.
Decibel debacle
App crashes every time it's opened. Doesn't appear to do anything but crash. To add to that, its icon doesn't show up anywhere on the iPad so there's no way of getting rid of it! Real waste of time.
Max
Maxes out at 97db
not accurate
it gave a 65-70 dB reading with only a quiet dishwasher running. the EPA recommends hearing protection at 70dB. i don't think so!
Alright
It won't go higher than 100 db though.
Good app
This app is pretty good
Crash.
100% crash on launch.
Works fine
You will never see a decibel reading of zero. It does not exist. Go spend $100 on a real decimeter. You will find it works about the same as this app. Before you post, do some research.
Usefulness?
This app works ok, but it doesn't provide any reference to tell you equivalents. For example, I told my husband that I thought the cabin noise of our current car was quite high. So I whipped out my handy iPhone app to find out just how loud it is. I got a reading of 85db but then I tried to figure out what that is equivalent to and there was no facility to do that. I had to go to the app store to look them up here (as there are examples provided with the app advertising). I would suggest adding in some kind if reference do that the app is more useful.
Interesting app
Definitely responsive to changes in ambient sound and sudden noise. I'm not sure of the accuracy but can be interesting to check. Digital readout, high and low session records would be useful- looking forward to those kind of updates!
