- Missing reflexive verb conjugations.
- Favorites do not sync across devices.
- App becomes slow after updates.
- Expensive for missing key features.
Useful tool
I study several languages, and this dictionary has features that I have found helpful in my favorite dictionary apps. It provides verb conjugations and an ample number of sample sentences.
Terrible font
Great dictionary made extremely difficult to read by the awful font. I'll find a different app which is easy to read.
Nouns and verbs
I find that there is not enough of a marked difference between the nouns and the verbs under each word heading. For example Sleep which can be a noun or a verb, you have to scroll carefully through all nouns to eventually get to the verb which you can easily miss as it’s the same font as the rest. A slightly different bullet point is the only difference. The separation between the 2 should be much more clearly highlighted so that you could jump straight there.
Please Update!
The app is getting slow. Please update it to iOS 11.
No iCloud sync across devices
So you have a few Apple devices that you use. But when you favourite a word it is only favourited on that device. Open your second device and you can’t go back to practice your favourite words as you’re on the wrong device. This is a bit behind the times. C’mon. It’s not like it’s a cheap app!
Does all I need
One of the rare applications which I want to review and praise. It does all I want from the dictionary * No subscription necessary - one-time purchase model * Huge database of words * Maps grammatical forms back - plural to singular, verbs to infinitive form, allowing one to search for the word as written, which is priceless for irregular verbs * Works offline * Provides conjugations for verbs
Not a dictionary
When you set English to Italian and type an English verb - it gives you you everything about the English verb - really??
Limited
Colour for detailed definitions poor . No speaker pronunciation available. Expensive for what it is.
Annoying
It now opens up always on "My dictionary" page. Very annoying and slow. Please change this behavior
Good, But Not Concise
I have been learning Italian in a class for 4 years now and have used many different dictionary apps (free and paid). None of them are perfect and it’s hard to get one that does everything an Italian-English dictionary should do. This *seems* to be free of grammatical errors, but it lacks (at the time of writing) something which is an egregious oversight on the developer’s part - NO CONJUGATION FOR REFLEXIVE VERBS! Anyone who learns Italian in a class will come across reflexive verbs at some point as a beginner. Scary as they are, the most basic introduction verb taught to beginners is lavarsi (to wash oneself). I looked this up in this dictionary and it was there, indicated as riflessivo, but WITHOUT CONJUGATION! So I looked up some other Italian reflexive verbs and none of them have any conjugation for mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si. This really devalues the high asking price for this app as reflexive conjugation is essential and believe me, the Italian language throws up reflexives all the time. This needs rectifying immediately. Furthermore, on normal verb conjugation the formal Lei has been omitted from the lui/lei conjugation. In the 21st century, not all Italians automatically ‘give the tu’ and there are many situations where you will be spoken to using formal verbs. Stuff like this needs to be sorted out as I assumed such oversights would not exist for the price! I am considering asking for a refund now, but I’ve raised the issue with support and if they indicate the dictionary will be improved I’ll keep it.
Such a great app, but dark mode is awful
How do I turn dark mode off?
This App does not work
The App was clumsy when moving between words and verbs. Many verb congregations are missing, and on occasions my whole list of saved words was lost. I had this App for a week but it just doesn’t work as advertised so I have now deleted it and find the free dictionaries much better. I asked the developer for a refund but was just told that, ‘unfortunately, Apple don’t allow developers to issue refunds.’
I Definitely Get My Money's Worth
I use this app multiple times every day and really pleased with it. I like that it keeps track of my search history and allows me to keep a running list of words that I want to review. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that there are times when the definition of an Italian word is incomplete because it doesn't include all of the common synonyms.
Troppo lento!!
Era lento e dopo l'aggiornamento è diventato lentissimo!! Quasi inutilizzabile! Ed ho un iPhone 6...
Good but room for improvement
Easy interface and information clear. Missing some vocabulary e.g. Fennel. search function could be smarter by making suggestions for minor user spelling mistakes. Does the search have to be either in Italian to English or English to Italian exclusively? Why not both at same time, would make UX faster. Still the go to app on my iPhone. Google translate does a good job when word is not in dictionary.
Excellent
Descriptions with excellent examples
Not much of a dictionary
This dictionary doesn’t cover the language well. I’m reading Il Gattopardo and having much better luck looking up words in the free WordReference dictionary than in the Collins. The Collins doesn’t even have all the words in the average article in Corriera della Sera. What’s it actually good for?
Great app, with one little issue
This is easily the best Italian dictionary app. A lot of care was put into making the interface clean and intuitive. The only issue is that it's clumsy to close definitions. You open a definition by tapping on the word, but to close you have to click on a little "arrows" button on the other side of the screen. The definitions also stay open forever, so after awhile a bunch of definitions are open. I'd expect them to be closed automatically at some point, like when you open the app.
Not worth the price!!
Absolutely not worth the price!!! Slow and at time erratic app. Dictionary isn't bad but occasionally really quite basic vocab missing. It would be worth $4.99 - no more
Needs interface work
The dictionary itself deserves 4.5 stars: Ultralingua's interface is not well-thought-through. How do you use a bilingual dictionary? First, you almost always use it in one direction. So making it way too easy to reverse direction by putting the toggle too near another far more frequently used button is a serious design flaw. Second: Once you've looked up a word, you don't use the interface again until you need to look up another. So it ought to require minimum effort to start a new search. With the Ultralingua interface, you first must go to the upper right corner of the display to clear the (tiny) search box by tapping the (even tinier) "x" inside, then redirect your fingers to the keyboard at the screen bottom. There really needs to be a "clear search box and start a new search" button right next to the keyboard. On the plus side, it's great to have the word-search history window--once you find out that it's there.
Worth it.
Worth the money.
Only verbs and very expensive
This advertises itself as a complete dictionary, but it only does verbs. It’s completely stupid and a total rip off.
Good dictionary
What we've used in Rome. Good for words, could be better with phrases (but then it's a dictionary).
It's not fluid
It moves jerkily, please update!
A suggestion for improvement
Whenever I press the erase button in the search window, I hit the change language button. Please move the change language button more toward the words Italian/English. I hope this makes to other users and especially the vendor.
A great tool
Having moved here from Italy, I still need to look up words all the time.
What's with the awful icon?
See title
Fine
Why it's called ultralingua instead of Collins?!? Ultralingua was 15$ collins 25$. This is Collins why on my iphone it's named Ultralinua? :S It works fine anyway
Lenta
Da quando l'ho aggiornata è diventata insopportabilmente lenta, sia nella ricerca delle voci che nel loro scorrimento. Spero possiate risolvere questo problema, perché per il resto è davvero un ottimo strumento di lavoro
Better before
Since the "upgrade" this app is more difficult to use, requiring more "strokes" to find/get what you want. Also, the fancy lettering is distracting. They have removed the names of the tenses in the language being used, replacing them with the English equivalents, which is NOT helpful when the tense names are different than English. Looks like they tried to,make it look more streamlined, but all they did was make it fancy and harder to us. Please remember the KISS principle!
Buon giorno
Ti ringrazio molto per la programma spettacolare!
Why the icon change?!
I don’t understand why then icons were changed. The previous icons provided a powerful context to help me choose which app I needed to use since I own all versions of the Collins library. The new icons are completely useless. Please change the icons back to the original or find an interesting way to show the language of the app.
Very good and intuitive
Have this now for 4 weeks and is a great help. Forget paper dictionaries , they have had their time. This is quick, works both ways ( English to Italian and vice versa). Crashes on the odd occasion ( iPhone 5)
Non funziona più bene su iPad
Il portrait non va più su iPad 3 iOS 6.1
Collins Italian English Dictionary
I use this when I'm watching Italian TV, and there are many common words missing. Furthermore, about every ten entries, it crashes. Also wish it had audio as there are many times, when phonetic component is not sufficient. Then, I must resort to free app that works like a charm. However, much better, if it were all in one spot. However, shortcomings aside, it trumps using a cumbersome hardcover version. The verb conjugations also eliminates the need for a dedicated verb book. Make improvements and I'll be in heaven.
Loving this app.
I am reasonably fluent in Italian, but find that I need to look up some more obscure words and verbs. I always find the word I am searching. I also love that total verb conjugations in every tense can be found on the page to the right (swiping left to return to the dictionary).
Inexcusable
$25. The app structure is terrible - visually disorganized, forcing you to wade through text to find what you're looking for. Often requires typing the word out fully, with perfect spelling, in order to pull up a result. Includes no reflexive verbs, which differ in meaning. Often excludes important context for compound tenses - sometimes verbs use different auxiliary verbs depending upon meaning. Example: cominciare uses essere for pp when intransitive, but avere for transitive. Ingrassare means to fatten or gain weight - with avere, it would mean you're fattening something else up. Gaining weight would require essere. Piovere may use either, though the app shows only one. I repeat, $25 for a messy, incomplete and sometimes incorrect app. Not happy.
Excellent
Just an idea to save time is having the verb information translatable too!
Disappointment with this reference
I have two major issues with this reference - my first is a general one in that when you buy an app, prior to purchase you can only ever see a snapshot of the product, which is so limiting a view that you can make an error. And so I did make a big mistake with this dictionary. Which comes to my second issue which is with the presentation of verbs - more specifically reflexive verbs. This dictionary does not display the reflexive pronoun in the verb table (ie you get io alzo - rather than io mi alzo) and I note that the reflexive version of the verb is not listed in the search menu anyway. I would not recommend this dictionary to language students as this omission is a real problem, in my view.
Latest update crashes a lot
Crashes on about 1 in 10 lookups now, or doesn't crash but shows a blank screen. Otherwise, I would give this app 4/5. Some more minor annoyances: – if you highlight a word and look it up, the app often searches the wrong side of the dictionary. – labels, e.g "Comput" for a Computer word are not formatted any differently from the translation – there is no key to abbreviations used – verb conjugation (very useful!) doesn't remember the tense you last used.
A must have
This App makes living in Italy much easier !
App broken after last update
App try to open and shuts down immediately . Pls fix it.
Additional assistance would make this perfect
The only thing missing are tips on when to use which verb tense in the conjugation section. I wish it would say something like "use the passato prossimo when you are talking about something that happened in the past", with an example, etc.
More expensive does not necessarily equal better quality!!
While it is true that this app. delivers on everything that it promises, I would not recommend that anyone download it as it is, in my opinion, far inferior to similar apps. that I have downloaded and which are free of charge. The 'Wordreference' app., for example, is much simpler to use and seems to me to have a broader range of words, more accurate conjugation etc... Please don't waste your money. At least try 'Wordreference' or similar first. I made the mistake of equating expense to quality, thereby wasting $30!
Multitasking
In this version the multitasking got less immediate, please fix it..!!! :)
Highly useful
While not always easy to switch between parts of the program once having used it for an extended period of time not really an issue I’ve used the program> 4 years and I find the extensive usage of words and idiomatic phrases very helpful As someone who learned italian at an older age it is a very valuable resource right in my pocket don’t have to go on the internet to get info rapidly especially when I’ve forgotten how to use a word Phrase pronunciation good tool also going back to Italy this summer for 14th time and I always bring my iPhone for reference when needed JJ
Completely broken
The new iOS7 update makes all three of my Collins dictionaries crash immediately on launch. That's an investment nearly $100 rendered completely useless. Fix this!
Very good but room for improvement
Used this on a trip to Italy having done a basic Italian course, on an iPhone 4. Reasonably intuitive, at its best when you find the word you want and it gives you a half dozen useful phrases you can use. Three sections (dictionary, grammar and numbers), dictionary and grammar should be integrated but they are not (so a word in a future tense will be not found by the library, and if you are in the tenses section you will not find a noun) likewise English and Italian should be integrated as you switch from one to the other. Room for improvement in menu vocabulary, lots of names of food not found. Nevertheless well worth the investment, you can use it all day without running down the battery and it is much better than carrying around a big dictionary.
upgrade has slowed this down
Before the latest upgrade this app was much snappier and easier to use. This version for iPad for me is clunky and has an annoying lag which means the characters don't appear as rapidly as they are typed. I won't be upgrading the app on my iPod Touch for this reason. Perhaps there will be an update to get it back to the previous speed of use?
