Wonderful app
Very helpful app with awesome listening component as well. You get to understand native speaking and the support system responds quickly and helpfully. Can’t recommend enough.
False advertising regarding in-app purchases
Great app!! Has helped me learn a lot! However, after having used it for a while it’s suddenly asking for a subscription? This app is not advertised as having in-app purchases/does not have the in-app purchase tag on the App Store.
Good but not free anymore 😥
I’m using this app quite a while now and it’s a good way to learn Norwegian, especially the grammar. Unfortunately they have introduced a subscription model and it's no longer free. Since it can't replace Duolingo for me and I'm not willing to pay for another app, I won't use Mjølnir anymore. Nevertheless a very well designed and helpful app.
Great app, incorrect subscription pricing
This does a great job at reinforcement learning and I am looking forward to using it more. Breaking it down into the proficiency guidelines that track immigration is also very helpful. I just subscribed for a year, though, and was disappointed and frustrated. There were two pricing levels offered, one at 7/month with a yearly subscription, or 12/month at a monthly rate. I opted for the yearly subscription, and then had to approve the charge, which was 110.99 for one year. This does not track. Even with a currency difference (I am in Canada), this is incorrect. I also have a USD credit card I use for these purchases. So the way the currency conversion is done was disappointing. That is not just an Apple thing, it varies by app. App itself = thumbs up. Update in response: None of the prices indicated that I was bring quoted US dollars rather than Canadian dollars initially. And it is understandably frustrating to be quoted one price, then click and find a very different price, all just labeled $. If the first price is labeled USD I would not have been surprised. And, I could have had a chance to pay with USD instead of CAD. It costs money, about 4%, every time currency is converted to pay. So it would have been more efficient if the price had indicated currency. I had to work that out on my own in reverse, after being charged (and being charged 4% more than necessary because of the currency conversion on my canadian card). It is hopefully a pretty easy change to indicate currency on the quoted price. I almost didnt subscribe because it just looks kinda scammy to be quoted one price, click to pay, and get a much larger number. I thought it was an error.
Excellent learning resource
I find the method highly effective. I am learning a great deal at a comfortable pace, especially when compared with other apps. This is a good way to learn grammar!
Awful for casual learners
There are a few fatal flaws when using this app. It assumes you have unlimited time to study each day and will never miss a day. If you do miss a day, you'll have to make up the previous lesson(s) to move forward. There's no way to pause your progress. I took a few days off and now it's completely useless as I don't want to spend hours catching up. My only option would be to reset my account and start from the beginning. Also, there's not an option to slow down a sentence or just hear individual words. If you can't understand a whole sentence to memorize it, you're screwed. I ended up skipping things bc it was spoken too fast. It was frustrating that they designed it as all or nothing. A lot of the content is singular words but there's enough sentences to be really frustrating when you can't slow it down. There's potential for a great product they just need to make it more accessible to slower paced learners and incorporate more helpful features.
Monetizing
I really liked this app it was a great resource but then they monetized it and now it’s subscription based. If you can afford it use this app it’s perfect for Norwegian!
After 5 months using
I bought a one year subscription but after 5 months of using, I came to the conclusion that it is not an app to really help you learn but more of to instil the habit of checking and using your device on a daily basis. What if I just dont want to study for a week or two weeks!! Why do I have to study almost every day? This app should add an option to pause, and also to make it available on web (what if I don’t want to use mobile to study?) I gave two star because it has good material in it and very minimal.
They know Norwegian but not pedagogy
There’s a lot of good Norwegian content, and I really like hearing the different accents of the speakers. But, this is a very difficult app to learn a language with. Memorizing random words in random order is tedious, and it’s hard to build connections between concepts and vocabulary this way. I’m often reaching for my dictionary to look up words on a flashcard that I havent seen before. No one learns a language by memorizing a list of nouns, then a list of verbs, etc. There should be more thematic decks (say a deck about food that includes all the parts of speech and listening to sentences about that topic, where cards reinforce each other and you build connections between ideas). I’d also appreciate the ability to bookmark cards and create my own decks of things I want to prioritize reviewing.
Great app and support
Been using the app for some time now and have really made some progress with picking up Norwegian. Had a problem with the app but the team quickly and helpfully responded to the issue!
Customisable & Good customer support
- Helpful if you like learning with flash cards - Customizable - You can choose topics and level - Excellent customer support : Provided resolution on same day when I had issues with the app. Really appreciate this.
Early Review
Only done one session so far but after trying Duolingo and some other language apps I can say for definite this will be the one to help, I love the examples not only in norweign but also in English and it helps get the pronunciation as close as possible which I think makes this app more valuable over others.
Not really for casual learners
It gives the impression of being pretty accessible but then asks for quite a significant financial commitment after a few days of learning. Unless you’re really serious about learning specifically this language it doesn’t really make sense to use it when other apps charge less money than this for more languages. The information in here is undeniably very good though!
Takk
Great app. Hope you’ll add some more material for b1 and b2 learners soon!!!
K
Amazing and simple learning app for expats, but you must add some sort of sync, especially across devices or a way export/import progress
Great App
One of the best language tools in the App Store. The system really works! The customer support team is also amazing.
Bonne application, très efficace
Meilleure application pour l’apprentissage à base de fiches pour le norvégien que j’ai pu essayer. Efficace, les explications sont claires et les enregistrements de qualité. Fonctionne très bien à côté de l’application avec le célèbre oiseau vert. Je met 4 étoiles pour l’interface rudimentaire, mais j’aime beaucoup l’appli. Je n’ai pas hésité à m’abonner, très bonne découverte!
The best
In three days Im learning things I couldn’t in a year using Duolingo. I love this app. It’s easy, fast, fun, and helpful. And no ads! Suggestions: Have 2 recordings for each word because some of the voices sound different or have different accents. Have a progress bar showing how many weeks until the next proficiency level. Option to change account email.
Best Best BEST method
Best method of learning Norwegian EVER! Thanks for making this app curated for a wide variety of learners! I am learning so much more this way vs when Iw as taking fast track courses online.
Solid, serious, useful tool
I’ve been learning Norwegian for a few months now and this has become my most important tool for serious acquisition of the language. What I like most about Mjølnir is that it feels like a halfway point between a serious book on Norwegian language and grammar and (on the other hand) many of the “popcorn”-level free apps out there that only give you some basic vocabulary without serious grammatical instruction or listening practice.
Excellent Norwegian learning tool so far
As an expat Norwegian learner around A2-B1 level I have realized independently how important vocabulary knowledge is. If you know the words along with basic grammar, you can make yourself understood and understand a lot of spoken and written Norwegian just via context. If you don’t know the words, it’s a lot harder. Mjølnir app looks perfect for addressing this, as it uses spaced repetition (effective and widely used memory technique) AND it’s also targeting the most used phrases and vocabulary first (trying to find these on the net can be difficult and of uncertain reliability.) So you’re learning the most efficient content, paired with the most efficient learning method. Excellent. Finally, I also like that all the flash cards come with audio from native speakers (super useful to train your listening and pronunciation skills), and that it doesn’t allow you to overload yourself - when you’re done for the day, you’re done. The UI is simple but looks good and is bug free for me so far, so good marks there. All in all I’m very happy with it and look forward to finishing the entire content within the next year. I think it’ll be helpful as another tool to increase my Norwegian knowledge.
