Do not invest
I invested 1k just to try this app out after hearing numerous podcasts talk about it. 3 years later I can’t even sell my shares at a major discount. I just want out, doesn’t seem like there is much transacting going on besides the people selling the paintings making the actual profit then your stuck with shares you can’t even trade..
Love this investment opportunity but the app needs help
I like to think that I got in on the ground floor with Masterworks, and I am a firm believer in the concept. My only two complaints are 1) it’s become so popular that many of the offerings sell out so quickly that I don’t have the chance to invest and 2) the daily quiz on the app is janky and I lose points because I can’t hit “continue.”
Wolf of Wall Street knock off
Ever see the movie? This is a knock off. Sales folks are knocking on your door to invest invest invest. Then watch your portfolio drop year after year. If you have throw-away money to laugh about at parties this is the scheme for you. If you really want an investment hedge different than the stock market then move on.
“Buyer’s Remorse”
I had been contemplating opening an account with Masterworks for a few months. I read reviews during this time & all of them were positive & seemed realistic. I make the plunge, sign up & download the app AND as per usual, that’s when all the negative reviews finally show up. Most of these were written since December 2023, after I had done my research. I became apprehensive & wanted to delete my account, but apparently I am not authorized to delete an account that I set up. That makes no sense to me. I’ve logged out & plan to stay that way until I can get this figured out.
Great app!
Makes it easy to invest in art, fractionally.
high fees and relentless spam
i signed up for masterworks because friend recommended but after reviewing their fees decided against investing. since then they've spam called me regularly despite me asking to be removed from their list the app and website don't let me update/remove my contact info. sketchy af business practices, strongly discourage even signing up.
Mobile app pleasant but buggy
Enjoy the performance and UI for mobile app, but login (especially w social sign on) has been broken for months and its near impossible for me to review portfolio within app. Recent changes to app have also made it difficult to review portfolio - it seems to just be another offering page now. Very confusing.
Face ID and PIN do not work!
The Face ID and pin feature do not work on this application, which is a big no-no is, especially since my bank account is linked to this application as well as money! This needs to work this is a huge security flaw! I should be asked to scan my face or enter a pin, if the security option is enabled upon application open. latest iOS version and latest version installed.
Nice!!
Nice!!
Pretty worthless
They’re slowly reducing app value - you can’t see portfolio performance anymore. Of course you can buy art on the app, but everything else is buried on the web. Super lame - telegraphing that no one (except them) is making any money here.
pretty good
decent app, the little trivia section is a nice plus. wish it had a bit more functionality, like more practical ways to track shares owned. a “wishlist” feature would be nice, as well as more graph offerings to see your collection. all things considered, though, it’s a pretty good app; feels new, which i don’t take for granted lol.
Has gotten worse with time
You cannot track your portfolio, see your cost basis, see the art you've invested in easily. The updates to app are built around spammy features to get you to buy more art. But they'd accomplish that better by making this a true investment platform for people serious about allocating to art. Disappointing and am stopping most activity here. Wouldn't recommend it.
broken
New app flashes the screen, and then instantly goes black iphone 13 ios 16
2nd review
A+
Closed Secondary Market
Today they emailed all investors and told us secondary market is no longer accessible, but to “call the sales” team. Final straw for me.
Great platform, app has some bugs
Uk postcodes don’t fit in the payment textbox :(
It’s not the IRS…but
Terrible user interface. Terrible dashboard with minimal information on personal portfolio; which should be the homescreen information. Seems to focus more on new sales and new customers as opposed to providing a quality user experience for customers who already have a portfolio. As a point of annoyance, It’s very cluttered, which is sad considering it’s an art platform. Go figure that out. Verizon Wireless UI is superior, if you need a similar, but much better comparison.
Good but keeps crashing
App is good overall and I love being able to purchase fractional shares of artworks. The app can definitely be improved as it’s been crashing very frequently (since latest update). It shuts down almost immediately after starting it. Secondly, I started a purchase on my phone but then couldn’t complete it as I wasn’t aware of the minimum purchase value. I completed it on my laptop where min purchase value was shown. After completing the order, the pending order continued to be shown on my phone (despite it being from same account and same share).
Easy Peasy
It is an exciting way to own pieces of your favorite artists and being introduced to new soon to be favorites. That with investments at a reasonable price that will pay dividends in the future. Masterworks makes it easy.
Crashes every 10seconds
Crashes
great app
Super, great UI, nice flow, thus far no bugs that i’ve encountered, all cool here.
Liquidity scam
For the most part t seems they’re just focused on buying anything and marking it up roughly 10% but maybe more to flip to the user base. The effort to find value is almost non-existent. The platforms become diluted with too many holdings and they rarely flip anything. Been on here for about 3 or 4 years and one holding out of 9 has flipped. The 5 year rule implies I probably should have flipped at least a 1/3rd of my portfolio by now. I’d take a soft pass on this app
Know your investment strategy
There are complaints and negative reviews I read about the illiquid nature of these holdings as well as the high fees involved. That is absolutely correct but no secret. This is not like public company stock investing. It’s much more akin to private venture investing - a long term hold with no control of the exit timeline. You have to go in with the right mindset and perspective. If that’s part of your investment strategy, then data shows that this asset class has historically performed quite well and is less correlated to general macro economic swings than most other asset classes. So it’s a pretty solid complement to a diversified portfolio.
Shady practices
Misleading. They had a daily quiz that they just silently stopped. Who knows what else is going on under the hood.
Good idea, but not easy to sell
I got a few fractions of some paintings by Picasso a few other famous artists. The paintings have only changed value by a percentage or less some loss some gain. I used bitcoin. I wish I’d kept the money in bitcoin which went up in the same time. Also it’s very hard to sell your shares in the paintings. I would not of invested in the “paintings” if I knew this at the start and would not invest again on this platform.
Great app, fun investing
I like to diversify and love art and Masterworks has made it fun and easy
Bugs
I can’t even sign on anymore because it glitches so much.
Blast to the past.
Using this app feels like moving back in time. I don’t find it to be a good experience. Issue 1) - I am not giving the option to purchase shares with proceeds of previously sold shares that have been deposited into my tamplum trading account. Contact their tech help. Did not get a resolution. Issue 2) - while purchasing shares, if I mistakenly check the subscription agreement radio button, it locks down the purchase not giving the option to uncheck or modify the parameters of the purchase. The incomplete purchase just stays there prompting you to completing the purchase by hitting the complete button, even if you don’t want to proceed. There is no option to cancel or modify purchase, and if there is, it’s not obvious.
Know returns will be long
Had 1 exit in a painting I picked up on secondary market within app. Others are still waiting as they tend to keep the art several years on average.
Great idea poor execution
Promised a lot in as platform but did not deliver much. Recommend staying away. Mad about stopping the art quiz also.
I LOVE THIS APP
Brilliant
Point less
They won't sell your art they just hold your money
blessings
many
Least liquid investment I have
If you want to give them your money and have it sit for years and years, with little to no feedback, then this is your investment. Avoid this thing like the plague. I invested in 3 paintings 2.5 years ago, and to date, all I can see is that my paintings/portfolio have likely lost value. Finally, I have absolutely zero idea when they will sell, of ever. All of this on a red, hot stock market. Live and learn.
